FT149: “Poor people don’t hate rich people; they envy them and buy lotto tickets to become one of them.” —Old Pithy

Fundamental Truth

People don’t hate the Lifestyles of the Rich they just hate the Rich because they’re Living it Instead of Them

Overweight and less beautiful women hate beautiful women with toned, firm bodies.  Overweight and less handsome men hate more handsome and muscular men who get all the beautiful women with toned, firm bodies.  They may hate those who are more physically attractive than they are.  Until they start dieting and going to the gym to become one of them.  Once they are one of the beautiful people they no longer hate the people they once did.  In fact, they now enjoy being part of their world.  A world where their physical appearance gets them the attention they didn’t know when they were less attractive.  But for some dieting and working out is hard work.  Especially if they have to work harder than others who can eat and drink anything they want without putting on a pound.  So if they falter from their new healthy lifestyle and put that weight back on those old feelings of hatred will return.

People fear cancer.  They hate cancer.  And may adopt a healthier life style to avoid cancer.  By eating healthier.  And exercising.  They may quit smoking and cut buck on drinking.  And they may add certain foods to their diet they understand will help prevent cancer.  Even if some of these foods aren’t delicious.  After adopting a healthier lifestyle they don’t change their position on cancer.  They still hate it.  But staying on a healthy diet and making time to exercise is hard.  Because the delicious, less healthy foods are hard to give up.  And going to the movies is a lot more enjoyable than going to the gym.  Once their healthier lifestyle lapses their position on cancer does not change.  They still hate it.  As they always hated it.

There is a difference between hate and envy.  You may hate people you envy.  Because they are, or have, everything you want.  And you covet what they have.  But what you hate is that they are living the good life instead of you.  They don’t hate the good life.  Whereas you don’t envy what you truly hate.  No one has ever complained that someone else got cancer instead of them.  No one has ever complained about the unfairness of cancer that way.  Usually the complaint is more along the lines of ‘why me and not someone else’.  For the hate of cancer is a pure hate.  It is not relative.  It is absolute.  Whereas someone’s hate of the rich is relative.  It will disappear the moment a person comes into money.

People in the Public Sector exploit the Taxpayers to pay for their very Generous Pay and Benefit Packages

Kids may go on to college and take courses in the social sciences.  Where they learn about the unfairness of capitalism.  The evil of corporations.  How businesses exploit their employees.  How they put profits before people.  By the time they leave college the word ‘profit’ is a four-letter word to them.  And they believe we should shun anyone pursuing profits like those exploitive business owners.  Raising taxes on them is a good thing.  For by doing so we can help redistribute the wealth from those hoarding it to those who don’t have enough.  To produce a fair and egalitarian society.

They also learned how socialism is better.  That the Soviet Union only failed because of the Americans undermining a superior economic system.  They believe so strongly that they vote Democrat to try and do something about making America a fairer place to live.  They go on to get jobs in the public sector to do their part in making America fairer.  By redistributing wealth.  To help those who have little.  And they exploit the taxpayers.  Forcing them to pay for their very generous pay and benefit packages.  While those same taxpayers never live a life as fair or as equal as the public sector workers they support.

These public sector workers envy the life of the rich.  They don’t hate that life.  They just hate the people who are smarter and more talented than they are who were able to achieve that life.  It’s not fair that these people had talent.  And worked hard for success.  So it’s only fair to take their money away from them to make society fair.  And so they can enjoy a lifestyle that neither their talent nor their ability could ever provide.

Poor People voted overwhelmingly for President Obama to Punish the Rich for Winning Life’s Lottery

President Obama won reelection with a campaign of class war.  Getting the people to believe that the rich weren’t paying their fair share in federal income taxes.  Despite the top 10% of income earners paying 70% of all federal income taxes.  Early on Occupy Wall Street agitated the people against the 1%.  Which grew into a bitter character assassination of Mitt Romney.  Because he was rich.  People hated him for that.  Not for having money per se.  For the people wanted everything he had.  They just hated him because he had the talent to earn what they couldn’t.  For they lacked the talent to achieve the success of Mitt Romney.

President Obama enjoyed the support of rich Hollywood stars and musicians.  And the president enjoyed hobnobbing with them.  Even the suffering masses enjoyed seeing the president hobnob with their idols.  Even though they had wealth just like Mitt Romney.  But for some reason their inequality was okay.  And these superstars, incidentally, all went into their chosen field to become rich.  To live in mansions.  And to have more money than they could ever spend.  While the people castigated Mitt Romney for having money the people looked on in awe and reverence at the lifestyle of the rich and famous they so admired.  And all the rich and famous had to do to get this pass on having obscene wealth is to attack other people with wealth.  And publically support Democrats.  You do that and they will leave you alone.  No matter how much money you shelter in the Cayman Islands.

No one hates rich people.  They just envy their lifestyles.  And covet what they have.  They hate the fact that they weren’t born with the passion, drive, ability or talent to become rich.  And hate these people for being able to do what they cannot.  Become rich.  Though it doesn’t stop them from trying.  Especially poor people.  Who voted overwhelmingly for President Obama.  To punish the rich for winning life’s lottery.  While they themselves spend every last dollar they can buying lotto tickets.  For they may have voted for President Obama to punish the rich.   But that’s only because they envy the rich.  And want to become one of them.  Should they win the lotto their position on hating the rich will quickly change.  Perhaps going so far as to start voting Republican.  To save as much of their winnings from the taxman as possible.

FT128: “Democrats use class warfare to attack and tax the rich while taking money from the working poor by selling them lottery tickets.” -Old Pithy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - July 27th, 2012

Fundamental Truth

The Inherent Contradiction of Class Warfare is that you can’t Hate the Rich while wanting to be Rich

You hear it in the news.  You can hear it in the streets.  You can feel it in the air.  It’s another election season.  And the Democrats are ramping up their class warfare to assail anyone who did what everyone in the country wants to do.  Make money and live well.  President Obama even told successful small business owners the reason for their success.  Not the 80+ hours a week they put into their business.  But because their previous taxes built roads and bridges.  Which is a puzzler.  Because there are a lot of roads and bridges across America.  So you’d think there would be no business failures.  But there are.  A lot of them.  Despite all those roads and bridges.  Like I said, it’s a puzzler.

I guess the sad truth is that it’s not only rich people who hate the poor.  But it would appear our roads and bridges hate the poor, too.  Otherwise everyone would be making money and living well.  Not just those lucky few the roads and bridges favor.  Damn roads and bridges and their hateful ways.  Then again, roads and bridges are inanimate objects.  And can’t pick winners and losers.  So perhaps it’s the government that taxes us to pay for those roads and bridges that have hateful ways.  Perhaps they’re not building them special enough to spread their magic of success to those they come into contact with.  Perhaps our government officials don’t like poor people either.  That is to say, poor people who don’t remain poor.

But that’s neither here nor there.  It’s more around the corner and down the stairs.  No, what’s at issue here is the inherent contradiction of the Democrats’ class warfare.  Namely, if having more money than others is so evil why is it that everyone wants to have more money than others?  Isn’t that the whole point of unions?  To give their members more money and better benefits than those outside their membership?  It’s why the teachers go on strike.  For more money.  And more benefits.  Including health care and pension benefits that few teachers have ever contributed to.  Which is a lot better than most poor and middle class workers.  So here is a large group of people who have more money than others and yet the president never tells the teachers that they didn’t earn their pay and benefits.  So it’s okay to elevate some people above others even though we all use the same roads and bridges.  Odd.  For that seems like the definition of class warfare.  Granting special privilege to some so they can have more money than others.

Thanks to Roads and Bridges Movie Stars and Musicians make Obscene amounts of Money

To further see the inherent contradiction in class warfare consider Hollywood.  And the young and aspiring actors who go to Hollywood.  Why do they go there?  To become rich and famous.  To have more money than other people.  So they can live in their Hollywood mansions.  And in other mansions around the world where the rich and famous like to call home.  For a few weeks out of the year at least.  Those who make it became obscenely wealthy.  And make far more in a day than regular working people earn in a lifetime.  Not only do they want more money than others.  They have more money than others.  Yet the president doesn’t tell them that they didn’t make that happen.  Or that their success was due not to talent but those roads and bridges.

Consider, too, those who enter the music industry.  Rock, pop, hip hop and rap stars.  Why do these people enter the music industry?  To become rich and famous.  To have more money than other people.  Like the Hollywood stars they, too, want mansions.  Private jets.  Boats.  And all the other toys that money can buy.  They want to eat in the finest restaurants.  And party with famous celebrities from around the world.  These musicians don’t make music for the greater good.  For the poor.  For sick children.  No.  They make music to make as much money as they possibly can.  Some even begin legal action to protect what’s theirs in the digital age.  Fighting piracy abroad and illegal downloads at home.  Because they may have a lot of money.  But more money is better.  So they sue.  Yet the president doesn’t single these people out, telling them that they didn’t make their success.  It was those roads and bridges.  And that their illegally downloaded music is due to the people downloading it.  Who paid for those roads and bridges that made their talent possible.

How about lawyers?  They’re some of the richest people in the world.  And how do they make their money?  By taking it away from others who earn it.  By suing these wealth creators.  Or insurance companies.  Especially medical malpractice attorneys.  Who earned the unflattering moniker ‘ambulance chaser’.  Because they are willing to sue anyone to make a buck.  To have more money than others.  Lawyers are in part responsible for the high cost of health care because of their fraudulent lawsuits raising the cost of medical malpractice insurance.  And the class action lawsuit raises the cost of businesses (and the price of everything we buy) while bringing in obscene amounts of money for them.  While the people they represent make a fraction of what they collect.  But the president doesn’t tell these people that they owe their success to roads and bridges.  No.  He never says a word about lawyers.  Probably because he is a lawyer.  So rich lawyers get a pass.

Being Rich can’t be Bad when the Poor Spend so Much on Lottery Tickets trying to become Rich

The Democrats use class warfare to take more money away from those who they think don’t deserve it.  Those who have more money than others.  Other than teachers, movie stars, music stars, lawyers and anyone else with more money than others who typically vote Democrat.  Which seems to make it okay to have more money than other people.  If you vote Democrat you can have as much money as the roads and bridges can make for you.  But if you’re a small business owner trying to navigate the labyrinth of regulations just so you can pay a high tax rate, well, then it’s a different story.  Because these small business owners may vote Republican.  So whatever they make they were just lucky to make.  Even undeserving.  Because they didn’t build their business.  They weren’t smarter than anyone else.  They just used our roads and bridges to an unfair advantage.  So these leeches now owe us.  The people.  And should pay a higher tax rate.  And when they try to use legal tax shelters we should change the law so they can’t.  While turning a blind eye whenever those who vote Democrat hide their income to avoid paying those high tax rates.

So they attack the successful. To help those who have less than them.  But do they really care for those who make less?  The good, decent, poor people?  Or do they try to take their money, too?  Well, it turns out they don’t.  Care for the good, decent, poor people.  And they try to take back whatever they give them.  By encouraging them to spend as much of their disposable income on lottery tickets as possible.  So the poor can be, wait for it, rich.  That’s why governments sell lottery tickets.  To give people the chance to be rich.  So they, too, can have more money than others.  So they can live well.  Even though they have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than winning a big jackpot.  Because when it comes to the lottery it’s little different than it is in Las Vegas.  The house ultimately wins.  As does the government.

Who’s buying the majority of lottery tickets?  The working poor.  So they can become what the Democrats hate.  People who have more than others.  So they can live well.  Again showing the inherent defect in class warfare.  Having more money than others can’t be bad.  Being rich can’t be bad.  Because if being rich and having more money than others was bad everyone wouldn’t be trying to be rich.  For teachers, movie stars, music stars, lawyers and anyone else with more money than others know that having money is good.  But having more money is better.  Especially when you have more than others.  And you can live a comfortable life away from those who have less than you.  While enjoying a disproportionally large share of that wealth created by all those roads and bridges.

FUNDAMENTAL TRUTH #30: “Liberal talk radio is not successful because liberals are not deep thinkers.” -Old Pithy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - September 7th, 2010

LESS THAN MEETS THE EYE

The Left has long searched for an answer to talk radio.  It is one of the few mediums they do not control.   And it’s a powerful medium.  Lots of people listen to talk radio.  Few of them liberal.

When you hear ‘talk radio’, what do you think of?  Rush Limbaugh?  Probably.  Most people do.  When you hear ‘conservative talk radio’, what do you think of?  Rush Limbaugh again?  Probably so.  Now think of Liberal talk radio and what do you think of?  Silence?  Silence that is so silent that you can hear crickets chirping?  Probably.  Successful talk radio and conservative talk radio are synonymous.  Why?  America is a center-right country.  Limbaugh’s success isn’t due to any genius on his part.  He just says what a vast majority of Americans think.  And the Left hates that.  Because they’re not in the majority.

They sound big.  But that’s because they’ve got big mouths.  Sort of a mouse that roared kind of thing.  They’ve got the vast majority of the network news and print media.  The college professors.  The Hollywood elite.  And a bunch of rich people who assuage their guilt over their unearned wealth by proclaiming their liberal tendencies.  This is not a lot of people.  In fact, it’s quite few.  However, if we read or watch the news, watch a movie or a program about entertainers, go to college or hear the obscenely rich talk about helping the ‘little people’ they can’t stand and want nothing to do with, they’re there.  They’re in our face.  Some in positions of credibility.  So people see them as…credible.  However incredible they are.  Which makes it seem like there are a lot more of them than there actually are.  So, then, who are they?  Really?  These liberals?

THE GUILTY RICH

Some people have amassed vast fortunes for doing nothing. Some inherited it.  Some married into it.  Others have made vast fortunes by pretending to be other people (actors).  Some wrote books.  Others made it big in pop ‘music’.  Others rode a wave of celebrity for silly behavior for which they have no shame.  These people don’t live in the real world.  The kind of world where you get up with an alarm clock and go to work 5 days a week (or more) for a paycheck that barely pays your bills.  No.  These people don’t need alarm clocks.  And they never want for anything.  Except to be loved.

Because there are some in politics (i.e., Liberals/Democrats) that like to make everything into a class struggle, these rich people feel guilty.  For in class warfare, the rich are always the bad guys.  And they don’t want to be the bad guys.  Because people don’t love the bad guys.  So they show how much they care for those less fortunate.  They call themselves liberals.  And we forgive them for all that wealth.  The kind of wealth we say CEOs shouldn’t have.  But it’s okay for rich liberals.  Even though they don’t create jobs.  Or make things that make our lives better.

THE YOUNG AND THE STUPID

Kids are stupid.  Don’t believe me?  Ask a parent.  You tell them not to drink, do drugs, have sex, drive recklessly, skip class, lie, cheat, etc., and they still do.  Not all of them.  But many do.  They engage in reckless, stupid, irresponsible behavior all of the time.  And parents find drugs in their rooms.  Deal with a teen pregnancy.  Or an abortion.  Comfort a child with an STD.  Or help her deal with the trauma she suffers when her ‘private’ nude photos aren’t so private anymore (and seeing her arrested for distributing child pornography).  Or hearing from a child’s teachers (or your priest) that they were forwarded a sexting from your child.  Seeing a daughter in a Girls Gone Wild commercial (and seeing her lose a job because of it).  Go to the emergency room because of a car accident or drug overdose.  Enroll a child into rehab.  Or go to the morgue to identify a dead child.  Or something less traumatic, like babysitting a grandchild while your daughter dances at a topless bar.  Or is out turning tricks.

Kids live in the now.  And they want to have a good time.  All of the time.  Sex, drugs, abortion and STDs.  That’s what they’re thinking about.  And the ‘skankification’ of women.  Of girls.  Boys want only one thing.  Sex.  And girls want to be loved.  So they’re liberals.  They’re all for the liberation and empowerment of women.  Of girls.  Anything that makes girls ‘easier’.  And helps a girl’s self-esteem by making them more ‘popular’.  So legalize drugs.  And lower the drinking age.  Makes it easier to get girls into bed.  And keep abortion legal.  So a girl doesn’t have to worry about getting pregnant.  Makes her less hesitant in putting out.  And cure those incurable diseases, damn it.  Sometimes you’d like to hook up with a girl without having to get her drunk first.  And she’d be a whole lot more cooperative if she didn’t have to worry about an STD or two.

LOOK AT ME

I drive a Prius.  Because I care.  And I’m better than you.  That’s the message.  But when a rich celebrity drives a Prius and then flies away in their private plane for some fun in the sun, they give a different message.  They’re saying, “I’m a hypocrite.”  And, of course, that they’re better than us.

There comes a time in a rich celebrity’s life when they realize they haven’t done anything worthwhile.  I mean, sure, they’ve become rich and famous.  But they did that by pretending to be someone they’re not.  Or by writing some songs that Big Music marketed well.  Or simply for being good looking.  At some point in that ’empty’ life they need validation.  That their life has meaning.  So they champion a cause.  Warn us about the oceans.  Global warming.  The hungry.  They become politically active.  And provide expertise in things they know little about.  They’ll testify before Congress not because they have scientific credentials.  But because they played someone in a movie who did.  And to show their cerebral prowess they’ll call themselves liberals.  And warn us not to vote for George W. Bush.  For if we do, he’ll legalize rape or send all the gay people to one state.  (And, no, I won’t say who said these things.  I’m sure they’re embarrassed enough.)

And we love our celebrities.  Want to be like them.  So we, too, drive a Prius.  Because we, too, care.  And, of course, because we’re better than you.

THE SELFISHLY NARROW MINDED

The single-issue people care only for single issues.  Gays and lesbians who vote based on only gay and lesbian issues are single-issue people.  People who vote based only on a person’s abortion stand are single-issue people.  People who vote based only on environmental issues are single-issue people.  Etc.  Social Security.  Welfare.  Anti-war.  Anti-nuclear power.  Race.  Redistribution of wealth.  Animal rights.  People can be passionate about any one issue.  And if they are only passionate about any one issue, they’ll vote to advance that one, narrow issue.  And damn the unintended consequences that result from advancing that one narrow issue.  And they’ll call themselves liberals.  Because they’re about the enlightened ideal.  Not profits.  National security.  The rest of us.  Or common sense.

IT’S JUST A JUMP TO THE LEFT, AND THEN A STEP TO THE RIGHT

Liberals are indeed a minority of the population.  And yet our government governs very liberally.  How does this happen?  Simple.  Politicians lie.

During the primary election, they have to appeal to their base.  And their base includes all the small little groups of people noted above.  And more.  To get that liberal vote, they have to show how liberal they are.  Once they get the nomination, they have to move to the center and lie to the independents and moderates in the general election.  Convince them that they are centrists.  If elected, they move back to the left to pay off the far Left that financed their election.  When their poll numbers fall, they then move back to the right.  It’s a dance.  Like the Time Warp.  From the Rocky Horror Picture Show

It’s just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
Put your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it’s the pelvic thrust
That really drives you insane,

Let’s do the Time Warp again!

And there is some pelvic thrusting going on.  But it’s not the good kind.  If you know what I mean.

IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?

So why isn’t there a ‘Rush Limbaugh’ in liberal talk radio?  Because liberals are a small demographic.  And it’s a demographic created from small, narrow, special interests.  And a lot of them have things on their minds other than monetary and fiscal policy.  Foreign policy.  Affordable housing.  They’re thinking about sex and drugs.  Where to jet off to next.  Or checking into rehab.  They’ll rock the vote at election time.  But after that, they have better things to do.  You add it up and there is simply no market for liberal talk radio.  At least, not like there is for conservative talk radio.

When Liberal talk radio succeeds, it’s often by shocking the audience.  Belittling conservatives.  Name calling.  Like on SNL.  Or John Stewart’s The Daily Show.  It’s heavy on the comedy.  Light on the issues.  Because their audience is there for the entertainment.  Not for deep, intellectual thought.
