Hitler received the Iron Cross for Bravery which carried a lot of Currency in a Militaristic Germany

Adolf Hitler could give a speech that fired up the masses.  People loved him.  The Nazis rose to power by winning elections.  People elected them because they liked what the Nazis were saying.  Things were not that good in Germany.  The victorious Allies blamed World War I on them even though all nations jumped in enthusiastically.  And then to add insult to injury the Allies made Germany pay reparations.  Burdening Germany with the cost of World War I.

This was especially galling as Germany didn’t lose the war.  The war ended in an armistice.  Which is a mutual cessation of warfare.  Not unconditional surrender.  And yet here was Germany.  Being treated as if they surrendered unconditionally.  It made a lot of people feel angry.  And betrayed.  Enter Adolf Hitler.  Who could tap into that anger and feelings of betrayal.

Hitler was a war veteran.  He served as a dispatch runner in World War I.  Wounded by artillery.  And blinded temporarily by mustard gas.  He even received the Iron Cross for bravery.  Although it may have had more to do with spending so much time with senior officers at headquarters that issued those dispatches.  But for a militaristic Germany an Iron Cross carried a lot of currency.

When the Reichstag burned down Hitler blamed the Marxists and turned Germany into a Police State

So Hitler was a brave war hero.  Even though he didn’t actually use a weapon.  Which was a good foundation to build on.  For war heroes don’t stab people in the back after fighting bravely for them in war.  Which is how many Germans felt about the politicians.  Betrayed.  Victims of the evil, conniving politicians.  So the people felt victimized.  And they were looking for someone to stand up for them.  To right these wrongs.

Hitler wanted to be an artist.  But when that didn’t work he turned to politics.  And learned what a good speaker he was.  He even studied how to become a better speaker.  How to look.  How to use his hands.  How to inflect his voice.  His speeches became very moving.  Very dramatic.  He made the defeated Germans feel better.  For he told them that it wasn’t their fault.  It was the politicians, and the Marxists, that stabbed Germany in the back.  And he was the one man that could do something about it.

When the Reichstag burned down he blamed the Marxists.  Who the Nazis shared power with in the Reichstag.  But didn’t want to.  It’s still debated who started the fire (the communists, the Nazis, others) but what it did was allow the newly appointed chancellor, Adolf Hitler, to urge President Hindenburg to suspend all civil liberties so they could hunt these communists down like the dogs they were.  President Hindenburg did.  And the government rounded up the communists.  With them out of the government the Nazis no longer had to share power.  And turned Germany into a police state.  To keep that power.

The Equation Brutal Dictators use to stay in Power is Victimization + Demonization + Emotion = Power

Hitler was charismatic.  He could give a powerful speech.  And after the Reichstag fire he controlled the people.  Using censorship and propaganda he made himself god-like.  The war hero.  The savior of the German people.  To undo all the injustice of the Versailles Treaty.  Standing up to the Allies.  Punishing those who stabbed Germany in the back (first the Marxists and then the Jews).  And restoring German pride.  Because he got even with those who wronged the German people.  The people loved him.  He could do no wrong in their eyes. No matter how much wrong he did.  Which he could hide from the people.  Thanks to his censoring of the free press.  And his state propaganda machine.  Which is why people packed stadiums and the sides of roads.  Showering him with their adoration.

Adolf Hitler was Germany.  Germany was Adolf Hitler.  His national socialism provided for the people.  In return the people were subservient to the state.  Germany was more important than the individual.  And Adolf Hitler was more important than Germany.  So anything he did was okay.  For he could do no wrong.  As there was nothing more important than Adolf Hitler.  For Hitler was a cult of personality.  Above the law.  And god-like.  Where people believed he was the only one that could save the nation.  And would do anything for him.  With the most devout joining the SS.  Fighting with unbounded fanaticism in combat.  And carrying out the Holocaust with ruthless efficiency.  They pledged their loyalty to Adolf Hitler.  Not Germany.  And would do anything for him.  Anything at all.  Even torture and kill their fellow Germans.  If that was what their Führer wanted.

This is how dictators were able to do some of the things they did. Because they were a cult of personality.  Mao Zedong.  Saddam Hussein.  Benito Mussolini.  Muammar Gaddafi.  Kim Il-sung.  Kim Jong-il.  Kim Jong-un.  These brutal dictators were/are all worshipped by their people.  At least the people they weren’t/aren’t torturing or killing.  For they had an equation they used to remain in power.  Victimization + Demonization + Emotion = Power.  Similar to the equation the Democrats use to win elections.  Victimization + Demonization + Emotion = Democrat Votes.  Where they victimize the people.  Find someone to demonize for this victimization.  Such as Marxists and Jews in Nazi Germany.  Or Republicans in the United States.  Then use state propaganda to disseminate their lies.  Like Joseph Goebbels did in Nazi Germany.  And like the mainstream media in the United States disseminates Democrat talking points.  And then use fiery rhetoric to incite the people’s emotions.  Like Hitler, Hussein, Mussolini, Gaddafi, Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, Kim Jong-un and every other cult of personality did.  Like these ‘god-like’ people still do today.

The Democrats win Elections because they are Good at Lying and Manipulating People

Politics 101

The Southern Democrats fought to Maintain Slavery, Formed the KKK and Implemented Jim Crowe Laws

Children love candy.  And sweet treats.  They will gorge themselves on them.  And ruin their dinner.  Or sicken themselves so much from these sweet treats that they will vomit.  If parents let them.  But parents don’t.  Sometimes making for some unhappy children.  But parents don’t do this because they are mean.  They do this because it’s best for the children.

Politicians are a lot like parents.  Bad parents.  Because their ‘children’ can vote.  And because they can they will feed them all the sweet treats they so desired.  No matter how bad they are for them.  No matter how bad they are for the country.  Why?  Parents will do what’s best for their children.  While politicians do what’s best for them.

The Southern Democrats fought to maintain slavery.  They formed the KKK following the Civil War and the emancipation of their slaves.  They then implemented Jim Crowe laws to segregate the South.  That were in effect until 1965.  Then the Southern Democrats opposed the Civil Rights Act (1964).  One of the longest serving and most revered Southern Democrats, Robert Byrd, was an Exalted Cyclops in the KKK.  And he filibustered the Civil Rights Act.  Yet at his death the Democrats eulogized him with great awe and reverence.  Despite all of this Democrats say Republicans are the racists.  And blacks overwhelmingly vote Democrat.  Why?

The Democrats destroyed the Black Family with AFDC and Public Housing

Abraham Lincoln was a Republican.  The Republicans won the Civil War.  They maintained martial law in the South following the war to protect the emancipated slaves.  They did not form the KKK.  Nor did any of them serve as the Exalted Cyclops.  They opposed Jim Crowe laws.  And fought for the Civil Rights Act.  So why is it that the general perception is that Republicans are racists while those with a racist past, Democrats, are not?  Because the Democrats are real good at lying and manipulating people.  That’s why.  And they’re bad parents.

One of the greatest political feats in the history of the United States was the turning of blacks against their emancipators and defenders.  And changing their allegiance to the people who once enslaved and oppressed them.  And how did they do this?  With the Great Society.  Full of tasty treats.  Especially for blacks in the poor inner cities.  The candy?  Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC).  And public housing.  Which just destroyed the black family.  As the nanny state replaced the black father.  And gathered these single mothers and their fatherless children in crime ridden public housing of the inner cities.

Without a strong male role model in a child’s life they tend to get in trouble.  Because a single mother cannot discipline children as much as two parents can.  So a fatherless child strays.  They run with others who pull them further into trouble.  And when the state gathered large groups of fatherless children in public housing they ran in gangs.  Creating the crime that made public housing crime ridden.  And because all these kids went to the same schools they took their trouble into the schools.  Leading to lower graduation rates.  Fewer college enrollments.  Higher unemployment.  And lower median incomes.  This is what the Democrats gave blacks with their nanny state.  And they got them dependent on the nanny state.  So they continued to vote Democrat.  Even though voting Democrat was the worst thing blacks could have done.  Based on what Democrats have done to the black family.

If You raise the Price of the McDonald’s Burger there is no Cost Savings by eating the McDonald’s Burger

Today minimum wage workers across the country were demanding that the government raise the minimum wage to about twice what it is.  To $15/hour.  For these entry level jobs.  The Democrats support this.  For it’s more candy for their children.  Even though it’s not good for them.  For these are not careers.  Nor should they be.  These are entry-level jobs for people with no skills.  So they can gain some rudimentary skills to help them with their next step up their career ladder.  People don’t go to medical school and then work at McDonald’s.  No, they go to medical school explicitly so they don’t have to work a minimum wage job.  And those who don’t have to work a minimum wage job all of their life have a better life.  Both monetarily.  And personally.  With the satisfaction of doing something that gives their life greater meaning.

Of course if they raise the minimum wage to $15/hour minimum wage workers will lose their jobs.  For if you raise the labor rate prices will rise.  And sales will fall.  And with fewer sales businesses will lay off some of their minimum wage workers.  And the Democrats know this.  They’ve worked hard to get tariff protection to protect their union brethren in the automotive industry.  Because those higher wages raised the price of cars.  And reduced sales.  Hence the tariff protect6ion.  To force people to pay more for their cars.  By forcing the price of the competition higher.  So they can continue to sell cars built with their more costly union labor.  So Democrats know higher labor costs raise prices and reduce sales.  So why do they want a higher minimum wage?

People buy fast food because of the value.  They get a decent bang for the buck.  But if you reduce that bang people will buy less.  For if McDonald’s costs as much as a delicious burger at, say, Red Robin, which burger do you think the people will buy?  They’re going to buy the Red Robin burger.  For if you raise the price of the McDonald’s burger there is no cost savings by eating the McDonald’s burger.  So they won’t.  The Democrats know this, too.  But they also know by giving their children this candy they can get their vote.  It will make their children’s lives worse in the long run but that’s okay.  As long as they can get their vote now.  For that’s all that is important.  Not the lives they destroy by being bad parents.

Corporate Politics, Bureaucracy and Obamacare

Politics 101

(Originally published April 4th, 2013)

You won’t find many Union Workers filling out TPS Reports

In the movie Office Space we see how frustrating it is to work in a big corporation.  The office politics.  The bureaucracy.  The policies and procedures.  The frustration of having to answer to 8 different bosses after making a mistake.   Bumping heads with management at all levels.  And the mind-numbing frustration of getting your paperwork right.

Anyone who has ever worked in an office no doubt had their own TPS report moments.  And dealt with their own Bill Lumbergh.  So we laugh at poor Peter.  For we’ve been there.  And know his frustration.  For there is nothing worse than trying to work through a company’s bureaucracy.  Or dealing with layers of management that often appeared to be working at cross purposes.  And suffering under bad bosses.

Which is the whole purpose of labor unions.  To protect their workers from a business’ management.  And bad bosses.  Because unions say if they don’t management will just abuse their workers.  So unions shield workers from these unfeeling and inefficient bureaucracies.  Who are always introducing new policies and procedures to improve business efficiencies.  Things like TPS reports.  Which unions say only makes things worse for the worker.  So you won’t find many union workers filling out TPS reports.  Just the non-union office workers.

Dealing with a Bureaucrat is like a Grizzled Sergeant with 20 Years Experience reporting to a Junior Officer

Junior officers get no respect.  Comedian George Carlin served in the Air Force.  And said a common joke was to say when someone broke wind, “Captain who?”  They get no respect because they are bureaucrats.  They come out of their officer training with only book-learning.  While enlisted people have been gaining experience and learning how to do things on the job.  Then these junior officers come in with their book-learning.  And start telling these enlisted people how to do their jobs.  Despite these junior officers having never done their jobs.  Or understanding how to do their jobs.  But they will tell these people how to do their jobs better.

This is less of a problem in combat.  As junior officers typically have a short lifespan in combat.  For all the book-learning cannot replace the experience gained in actual combat.  Which is why lieutenants may command units but it is the grizzled sergeants with the combat experience that lead men into battle.  And a smart junior officer will learn everything he can from his senior sergeants.

Small business owners feel the same way about government.  For a lot of small business owners often go into business after working for someone else.  They’re like those grizzled sergeants in the military.  They’ve learned and done pretty much everything in a business.  Then decided to quit and start their own business.  And one of the first things they have to deal with is the mind-numbing bureaucracy of government at all levels.  City, county, state and federal.  A bunch of bureaucrats who never ran a business.  Who have no experience in their field.  And here they are.  Telling them how to run their businesses.  Like a junior officer out of the academy trying to tell a grizzled sergeant with 20 years experience how to do his job.

Under Obamacare Professional Bureaucrats will tell our Doctors how to administer our Health Care

In these complicated times if there is one thing everyone can agree on it’s this.  Bad managers, bosses, and officers are insufferable.  No one likes putting together ‘TPS reports’.  Or being told by 8 different bosses that they did something wrong.  And they sure don’t like people who don’t understand the first thing about their job or business telling them how they should do their job or run their business.  They especially hate people that can cite rules and regulations by chapter and verse who mete out some penalty or fine because they can’t cite those same rules and regulations by chapter and verse.

This will be the world of Obamacare.  And as much as EVERYONE hates these things at their workplace there are some who still want these same clueless bureaucrats and politicians to take over health care.  As if somehow these people who don’t know the first thing about treating sick people can do a better job than the grizzled veterans working in the health care industry.  Who spend more and more time filling out paperwork these days than actually seeing patients.  And the last thing they want is an even more bureaucratic system where they will have to report to 8 different people and agencies to treat a patient.  Where bureaucrats at the Department of Health and Human Services as well as the IRS will have their own coversheets for their ‘TPS reports’.

In the movie The Usual Suspects the character played by Kevin Spacey said, “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”  For if you don’t fear the devil you may live a life more in line with the devil’s wishes.  Making it easier for the devil to get your soul.  Government is a little like that.  For it has a horrible track record of doing anything right.  Even in the finest military in the world the bureaucrat side of the military pays $100 for a $15.00 toilet seat.  And yet the government has tricked so many people into believing they want more government in their lives.  Even though government is nothing but the managers and bosses people hate where they work.  Bureaucrats who tell others how they should do their job by citing rules and regulations by chapter and verse.  But who really don’t know what you do.  Or how you do it.  Now these professional bureaucrats will tell our doctors how to administer our health care.  And God help you if you get sick and put the wrong coversheet on your Obamacare health care services requisition form.  Or leave an important income tax field blank.

Rich People, Lying Politicians, Capitalism and World Peace

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 1st, 2013

Politics 101

Rich People are Cash Piñatas for Governments at all Levels to Whack Open

Politicians lie.  It’s no secret.  But because they tell people what they want to hear, the people often like these politicians that lie.  And vote for them.  Which is why politicians lie in the first place.  To trick people into voting for them.  For there is no other reason to lie during a political campaign.  For that is the one and only thing they’re trying to do.  Win.  And you win by getting as many people voting for you as possible.  But you don’t win by saying the current welfare state is unsustainable.  No.  You win by expanding the welfare state.  And taxing the rich to pay for it.

Of course, when people complain about higher tax rates politicians immediately call them greedy.  Rich selfish people who don’t want to pay their fair share.  Though these selfish rich people pay the lion’s share of all tax revenue.  Governments love having these rich people in their tax base.  From sales tax to property tax to income tax, rich people are cash piñatas for governments at all levels to whack open. To fund their public sector pensions and retiree health care benefits.  New York City LOVES having Wall Street and all those rich people in their city.  Because they pour dump-trucks of money into city coffers.

Yet these are the same people government officials demonized as being greedy and unwilling to pay their fair share.  And call them unpatriotic if they threaten to leave their high-tax locale.  Because when a few of the top 1% earners leave millions of tax revenue leaves with them.  Whereas if a few of the bottom 50% leave only a few thousand of tax revenue leaves with them.  Not even enough to notice.  No.  Rich people are a government’s best friend.  Yet governments treat them like pariahs.  And lie about them not paying their fair share.  Demonize them to gain political points.  And to trick people into voting for them.  Because their lies make it sound like they care.

There was a whole lot of Killing going on in the Americas before the Europeans first Stepped Foot in the Americas

But it’s just not politicians that lie.  Most of those on the left lie, too.  Our public school teachers, our university professors and the mainstream media lie, too.  To help the political left gain and maintain their power.  Kids today grow up learning that the greatest economic system in the world, capitalism, is the worst economic system in the world.  These educators and the mainstream media brainwash our kids.  Telling our kids that capitalism is bad.  And government intervention in the free market is good.  Like in socialism and communism.  Where they put people before profits.  And yet the mass of immigration has and always will be from nations that favor socialism and communism to nations that favor capitalism.

To help further this lie that the system that made America great is bad they teach these kids that America is not great.  Because of capitalism.  Which put profits before people.  That this nation was founded by rich white men for rich white men.  Despite this country of, and for, rich white men being the destination of choice for the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free who left their wretched and capitalism-free shores to come to America.  It was greedy white Europeans who came to America.  Whole stole this land from the Native Americans.  And then brutally waged war against these peace-loving people.  Who were anything but.

The Native Americans were hunters and gatherers.  They didn’t raise cattle.  They traveled great distances to find and hunt buffalo.  Hunters and gatherers need huge tracts of land.  Unlike farmers who can make a small plot of land productive.  Which created a permanent state of war in the Americas.  For when these tribes bumped into each other trying to hunt the same food they fought each other.  That’s why they called the most esteemed Indians ‘warriors’.  Those who proved their courage in battle.  By killing brave warriors in other tribes.  There was a whole lot of killing going on in the Americas.  Both in battle.  And in human sacrifice.  The Pawnee practiced child sacrifice in North America.  To please their gods.  As did the Aztecs.  Who killed people wholesale on their pyramids in Central Mexico.  And the Inca.  Who drugged their children with coca leaves and alcohol before taking them to a mountain top.  Where they then strangled them to death.  Killed them with blunt force trauma to the head.  Or simply left them to die of exposure.  And all of this was happening before those greedy white Europeans first stepped foot in the Americas.

The History of the World is one of Brutal Military Conquest and State Oppression

Those on the left blame Islamist terrorism on America.  And their imperialist ways.  Often citing the 1953 Iranian coup d’état as the prime mover.  A coup executed by the British with American help.  Why?  It’s a complicated story.  The British found oil in Iran.  The British needed this oil to fuel their war machine during two world wars.  As did their ally during World War II.  The Soviet Union.  Iranian oil fueled the Red Army.  And Iran provided a corridor for American supplies to reach the Red Army.  After the war the Allies began pulling out of Iran.  But not the Soviets.  Who liked that oil.  And wanted to keep it.  Not to mention having a warm water port for their navy.  And it wasn’t the first time the Russians came south looking to take Iranian land.  The deals the Iranians made with the British before the war were in part to check the Russian advance into their lands.  The Soviet interest in Iran was what got the British to convince the Americans to join them in their coup.  For the Cold War was on and the Soviets were already in Eastern Europe.  They tried extending into Greece and Turkey but failed.  And here they were testing the waters in Iran.

The British suffered through two world wars.  She lost her empire in the first one.  And nearly lost their existence in the second one.  But they held on.  Poland, Norway, the Low Countries and France fell.  Leaving the British alone.  Until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor bringing the Americans into the war.  And the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union.  Allowing the British to go onto the offensive.  Thanks to the Royal Navy.  And the sea lanes they kept open to Iran.  Allowing the free flow of oil that defeated Nazi Germany.  Oil that they invested a fortune to get.  Which brings us back to the coup.  The Iranians wanted a bigger slice of the oil profits pie.  The British refused.  Because the war had devastated their economy.  And they were struggling to rebuild.  Without ceding any ground to the new threat in town.  The Soviet Union.  So the British weren’t feeling particularly generous with the profits on that Iranian oil.  So the Iranians started whispering the dreaded ‘N’ word.  Nationalization.  One thing led to another and, well, the British put an end to all of the nationalization talk.

It may have not been a nice thing that the British and the Americans did to the Iranians.  But there’s been a lot of that going on throughout history.  A history of brutal military conquest.  And brutal state oppression.  Sumer was one of the first great civilizations.  But it’s not here anymore.  Having been replaced by the Assyrian and the Babylonian empires.  Which were replaced by the Persian Empire (Persia is present day Iran).  Which was conquered by the Greek Empire.  Which was displaced by the Roman Empire.  Which was replaced by the Byzantine Empire.  Which fell to the Ottoman Empire.  Which fell to the Allied Powers in World War I.  Which brought the British into Palestine.  Thanks to the League of Nations.  Which also called for a Jewish homeland in Palestine.  The seed of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  Arab nationalism.  And the Soviet Union allying with the Arab nations against the United States and Israel.  Fomenting anti-American sentiment in the Muslim world.  To help the Soviets win the Cold War.

Geopolitics is complicated.  And brutal.  Where war, oppression, slavery, genocide, human sacrifice, etc., were the norm throughout history.  Where there were but brief periods of peace.  Like the Pax Romana.  About 2 centuries of world peace under the Roman Empire.  The Pax Britannica.  About a century of world peace under the capitalist British Empire.  And the Pax Americana.  A period of world peace following World War II thanks to capitalist America’s role as a superpower.  Where they used that super power for good far more than it was used for bad.   But our schools teach our kids that Britain and the United States are just nations founded by rich white men for rich white men.  While the Native Americans and the Muslims that conquered countless people to build empires are the true peace-loving people.  And gloss over the parts of world conquest.  And human sacrifice.

Figures don’t Lie but Liars Figure when it comes to the Economy and the Patriot Act

Posted by PITHOCRATES - June 6th, 2013

Politics 101

Politicians Lie because they don’t want you to see how Wrong their Economic Policies Are

If you’re objective you look at the facts to form an informed opinion.  If you’re subjective you form the facts to support your opinion.  If you’re objective the facts mean the same thing to you as the next guy.  If you’re subjective they don’t.  Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.  That’s an objective fact.  The post-impressionists (such as Vincent van Gogh) are better than the impressionists.  That’s a subjective opinion.  For not everyone will agree with that statement.  As a lot of people are wrong about art.

Politics is subjective.  Because politicians selectively take facts and ‘spin’ them.  Which means they take what supports their political views and hype them.  While downplaying or ignoring those things that do not.  For example, take the monthly reports on the economy.  They hype the new jobs the economy created.  And the fall in the unemployment rate.  But continually downplay the shrinking labor force.  Which is the only reason why the unemployment rate fell.  The government quits counting the unemployed once they quit looking for a job.

Do politicians lie?  Of course they do.  All of the time.  Because they want to deceive you.  When they are talking about the economic numbers they may not be technically lying.  But they are deceiving you.  Because they don’t want you to see how wrong their economic policies are.  So they spin the facts.  Like that expression many attribute to Mark Twain.  “Figures don’t lie but liars figure.”

Objectively Harding’s, Coolidge’s, JFK’s and Reagan’s Economic Policies were Very Successful

When it comes to economic policies Democrats and Republicans have very different beliefs.  Democrats believe in an activist government intervening in the private sector.  Like FDR did when he turned a recession into the Great Depression.  Like Jimmy Carter did when he gave us terms like economic malaise and the misery index.  And like President Obama did when he turned a recession into the Great Recession.  Whereas Republicans believe in a limited government that stays out of the private sector economy.  Like Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge did when they gave us the Roaring Twenties.  Like JFK did when his policies gave LBJ a robust economy.  (Until his Great Society gave Jimmy Carter economic malaise and misery.)  And Ronald Reagan did when he gave us one of the longest and strongest economic expansions of all time.

Objectively Harding’s, Coolidge’s, JFK’s and Reagan’s economic policies were very successful.  Conservatives in the Republican Party want to implement similar policies today.  While Democrats want to continue the failed economic policies of FDR, Carter and Obama.  Because they prefer them for subjective reasons.  As they require an activist government intervening in the private sector.  And they don’t care that these policies have a long record of failure.  For they are more interested in growing the size of government than they are in the economy.

So the Democrats spin the economic news to deceive the American people.  And they spun their deception well.  For President Obama won reelection despite his policies giving us the worse economic recovery since that following the Great Depression.  Despite 4 years of failure the American people believe that he cares more than anyone else.  And continues to work harder than anyone else to fix the economy.   Despite his policies proving otherwise.

It was Wrong when George W. Bush used the Patriot Act but it is Perfectly Acceptable if President Obama uses It

So Democrats will ‘figure’ with the economic data to deceive the people so they can advance their agenda.  Making the federal government larger and more powerful.  Hyping the fall in the unemployment rate even though the labor force participation rate has fallen to Jimmy Carter lows.  They may deceive and they may destroy when it comes to the economy but one thing they are is consistent.  Which is more than you can say when it comes to national defense.  Or spying on Americans.

Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks the Bush administration passed the Patriot Act.  This law allowed warrantless wiretaps on international calls to people having suspected ties to terrorist activities.  The Democrats railed against the Patriot Act.  For it was turning the United States into a police state.  Where Big Brother was spying on our every movement.  If those movements were an international call to a person having a suspected tie to terrorist activities.  Even President Obama himself railed against the Patriot Act.  Saying in the 2008 presidential campaign that he would repeal this and every other Bush law that violated our Constitutional protections.  Of course, when he became president it was a different story.

Not only did the Obama administration keep the Patriot Act law they used it for far more than the Bush administration ever used it for.  The UK’s Guardian recently reported that the Obama administration was collecting and storing information on every Verizon phone call.  Not just people making international calls to people with suspected ties to terrorist activities.  But every man, woman and child that has a Verizon phone.  And probably every man, woman and child using every other cellular carrier.  You see, President Obama said it was wrong when George W. Bush used the Patriot Act.  But it is perfectly acceptable if he uses the Patriot Act.  As being able to spy on every American can go a long way in furthering the Democrat agenda.  Making the federal government larger and more powerful.  Showing how the Patriot Act is not an objective violation of our Constitutional rights.  But a subjective instrument of good.  As long as Democrats are wielding this awesome power over their political enemies.  And anyone who may become their political enemy.

FT172: “Damn the truth, promises and the Constitution,” said the politician. “I’m trying to get reelected.” —Old Pithy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - May 31st, 2013

Fundamental Truth

The People ratified the Constitution only because George Washington would be the First President

George Washington did not want to be president.  After winning the American Revolutionary War his place in history was set.  If the first government following the Constitutional Convention failed he didn’t want history to remember him for that.  Also, Washington was an old man.  Most Washington men were already dead at his age.  Something he was very conscious of.  And he wanted to live out his remaining days, however few he had, at Mount Vernon.  With Martha.  But America’s Cincinnatus would, reluctantly, answer the call of duty again.

The new Constitution was not very popular.  The old patriots of 1776 hated it.  With a passion.  While Washington, Alexander Hamilton and others who served in the Continental Army were generally for it.  Because they saw how the weak Continental Congress had almost lost the war.  Starving the Continental Army of the supplies they needed.  Unable even to provide it with shoes and clothing during the long cold winters at Valley Forge and Morristown.  And then there was the inflation.  Worthless Continental paper dollars that forced the Army to take what they needed to survive.  Giving the people they took from IOUs for the Continental Congress to honor later.

With the British defeated the Americans lost the common enemy that held the states together.  And they were soon back to looking after their own interests.  Charging tariffs to other states.  Even sending militias to fight over disputed land.  The nation was falling apart before it even became a nation.  The Philadelphia Convention addressed these problems.  And over a long, hot, humid and horsefly invested convention they wrote a new Constitution.  Few loved it.  But understood that it was probably the best they would ever get.  Ratifying it was another brutal battle.  And all throughout this process people reluctantly got on board.  Basically because of one thing.  The first president would be someone that all the people could trust with such great powers.  The man who gave up power when he could have been king.  George Washington.  So Cincinnatus laid down his plow once more.  And went to serve his nation.  Again.

The most Important Precedent Washington set was not Exceeding the Limits of the Constitution

This is how it used to be.  When our politicians were men of the enlightenment.  Disinterested men who went out of their way NOT to profit from the offices they held.  Men who would rather have been back home.  But reluctantly served.  Because the nation needed the best leaders during that formidable time.  That’s why Washington served a second term.  Not because he wanted to.  But if he didn’t Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton would have paralyzed the government with their constant fighting and seething hatred of each other.  So Washington stayed on.  Father to these children that couldn’t get along.  And father to a nation.

Washington was never happier than when he left office.  This man who could have been king.  Sacrificing all of his wants and desires.  And putting the nation first.  This old man that was cheating death.  Living beyond his years.  Who was used to giving orders in the army and having subordinates dutifully following them.  He hated the political process.  The deal making.  The special interests.  Those things modern politicians live for.  Because it is the pathway to wealth and power.  Which is why people serve today.  Who do not understand the meaning of selfless disinterest.  For they’re in it for number one.  And when they leave office they want to have more wealth than they know what to do with it.

Whereas Washington kept true to the Constitution.  And didn’t make arguments about it being a living document.  Or questioned the intent of the Founding Fathers.  For he was one of them.  He was there in Philadelphia in 1787.  He sat in the chair with that sun on it.  The one Benjamin Franklin studied for so long while sitting in that stuffy hall.  Wondering if the sun was rising.  Or setting.  After they signed the Constitution Franklin was certain the sun was rising for the new nation.  A nation of laws.  Where no man was above the law.  And the supreme law of the land was there in the Constitution.  Washington was the first president.  Setting the precedent for all that would follow.  And the most important precedent was not exceeding the limits of the Constitution.  For he knew a strong central government was necessary for the nation to have any hopes of surviving.  But he feared that once anyone exceeded the limits of the Constitution the whole experiment in self-government would come crashing down.

Life is so Good in an Aristocracy that Politicians will do Anything it takes to Win Reelection

What Thomas Jefferson feared most was consolidation.  Fears of a strong central government turning independent states into federal districts of the new government.  With growing powers to administer these lands from afar.  Turning the people living on these lands once again into subjects of a distant ruling power.  Who are there to serve.  To be obedient.  And revere this distant power.  Giving the duly elected president king-like powers.  Who would further consolidate his power.  This was Jefferson’s fear.  A fear Alexander Hamilton did not share.  Because he assumed all men in the government would be disinterested men of the enlightenment.  Like the Founding Fathers were.  But Jefferson knew you could not trust men to refrain from using power given to them.  So it was best not to give them that power in the first place.

Today you can see all of Jefferson’s fears come to pass.  A federal government larger and more powerful than even Alexander Hamilton could have imagined.  And a new fourth branch of government.  The IRS.  Powerful.  And fearsome.  Which appears to be helping the current administration to suppress the political opposition.  By harassing anyone espousing Jeffersonian principles.  Limited government.  States’ rights.  Constitutional limits.  Etc.  Which are also Tea Party principles.  That set of principles that launched a great grassroots movement that helped the Republicans win back the House of Representatives in 2010.  Something the Democrats were very conscious of.  And have since pilloried the Tea Party with every invective under the sun.  To delegitimize the Tea Party.  To prevent another 2010 from happening again.

President Obama is the most liberal president to ever occupy the White House.  And he won reelection.  Which isn’t easy for a liberal to do on a national stage.  Because only about 21% of the people call themselves liberal.  While 35% call themselves moderate.  And 40% call themselves conservative (see Conservatives Remain the Largest Ideological Group in U.S. posted 1/12/2012 on Gallup).  So liberals are in the minority.  Yet they hold majority power.  Which begs the question.  How do they win elections when the majority opposes their ideology?   Well, you don’t do it by acting like George Washington.  You know, with integrity.  But, instead, with rascality.  You don’t exactly tell the truth.  You make a lot of promises.  Even if you have no intention of keeping them.  And you use the awesome power of your office to attack your political enemies.  For it’s a different mindset today.  Whereas the Founding Fathers were trying to destroy an aristocracy today’s politicians are trying to build and maintain one.   And life is so good in an aristocracy that once you get in you never want to leave.  Which is why politicians will do anything it takes to win reelection.  Anything.  And if they were honest you’d hear them say so.  “Damn the truth, promises and the Constitution.  I’m trying to get reelected.”  But they’re not honest.  So you will never hear them say this.  You’ll just have to see it in their deeds.  And how unlike the Founding Fathers they are.

Political Promises, Lies and the Advancement of an Political Agenda

Politics 101

Government Helps the Poor by Keeping them Poor so they Remain Dependent on Government

Politicians lie.  Everyone knows this.  It’s a running joke in comedy movies and television programs.  And a common plotline in dramas.  Because politicians will say and promise anything to get elected.  Which is their primary and only objective.  Winning an election.  And the needs and wants of the people are secondary.  Things they can easily brush aside once ascending to elected office.  Because they don’t really care about the people.  At least, they don’t care for them as much as they care for themselves.

And once they’re in office the promises keep coming.  To help them win the next election.  And to keep the size of government growing.  As well as the amount of taxes they collect.  Which gives them wealth.  And power.  The ultimate goal in running for elected office.  That’s why they sneer at the concept of limited government.  And tax cuts.  Because the less government we have the less wealth and power they enjoy.  For if we really are the self-reliant people of the Founding what need do we have for an expanding government?

Of course the answer to that question is we would have little need for an expanding government.  For we can earn our pay and take care of ourselves.  And our families.  The way Americans did before Woodrow Wilson, FDR, LBJ and Barack Obama.  Men who do not like that independent spirit.  And will use a host of arguments to condemn it.  It’s not fair being their favorite.  Because who can argue against being fair?  So everything they do is about leveling the playing field.  To make sure the rich pay their fair share.  And to help the little guy.  By making him dependent on government.  And perpetually poor.  So they will remain dependent on government.  So they can keep taking care of these poor.

Government rarely chooses Tax-Cutting for Stimulus as Cutting Taxes doesn’t Increase the Size of Government

LBJ declared a War on Poverty.  Justifying a huge increase in federal spending starting the Sixties.  And after spending untold billions to eradicate poverty what did we get?  Not much.  We still have poverty.  And the government spends more with each passing year to alleviate the suffering of the impoverished.  But it never goes away.  Poverty.  And the government nurtures it.  Protects it.  By making it more attractive to stay on a meager government assistance instead of going to work.  And building a career.  Doing something you love.  While leaving your mark on the world.  Instead we get ever increasing federal spending.  And a permanent underclass the government can be savior to.  You see they don’t want to win the War on Poverty.  Because if they win it then we won’t need them anymore.

The greatest killer of poverty is a job.  People gainfully employed can provide themselves food, shelter, etc.  They can have clean drinking water.  And heat in the winter.  It’s only the unemployed who look at food, shelter and heat as sought after luxuries.  For people with jobs are those self-reliant people.  Who provide tax dollars instead of consuming them.  This is no secret.  So it would follow that the best thing to do during a recession is to make it as easy as possible to create jobs.  You do that by lowering taxes.  And cutting regulations.  Not by raising taxes.  Or adding regulatory costs.  And you sure don’t pass a quasi national health care plan like Obamacare.

Also, history has shown that Keynesian stimulus spending does not pull economies out of recession.  If it did Ronald Reagan would not have won in a landslide against Jimmy Carter.  And Europe would not be in a sovereign debt crisis.  Keynesians know this.  But they can’t pass up the opportunity to increase federal spending.  So they promise lower unemployment rates and higher GDP numbers if only Congress does the right thing and “pass this stimulus bill.”  And when it doesn’t work they have two predictable explanations.  They didn’t spend enough.  And that even they didn’t realize how bad their predecessor destroyed the economy.  Calling the recession du jour the worst since the Great Depression.  Covering their lies about ending the recession with statements like “things would have been worse if we didn’t act.”  And though they didn’t reduce unemployment they’ll make incredulous claims like “we saved 800,000 jobs with this bold action.”  Predictable.  For their primary objective isn’t to end any recession.  It is to exploit the crisis to advance their agenda.  Basically, increasing the size of government.  And we know this because there are two ways to put more money into people’s pockets to stimulate the economy.  You can cut taxes so they have more money to spend.  Or you can tax, borrow and print money so the government can spend more.  Very rarely do they ever choose the tax-cutting route.  Because the tax-cutting way works against their agenda of increasing the size of government.

Politicians Promise and Lie to the Young and Naïve to Advance a Political Agenda

And speaking of Obamacare President Obama promised the American people that if you liked your private health insurance plan you could keep it.  And the cost of that health care plan would go down.  Because they had a massive convoluted health care plan that was going to give health care to everyone.  Increase the quality of health care from what it is now.  And it was going to be less expensive.  Which was a lie.  Because you can’t have more of anything for less money.  Life just doesn’t work that way.  As they implement Obamacare its taxes and regulations are forcing business owners to push people from full-time to part-time.  So they aren’t forced into providing mandated health insurance plans.  Some even have no choice but to drop their health care coverage for all of their employees.  Because their health care costs went up.  Not down.  And they’re predicting doctor shortages.  Because the only cost savings they can get is by forcing people to work for less in the health care industry.  So they’re leaving.  Under Obamacare there will be higher costs, longer wait times, rationing, denial of services and lower quality.  Everything they promised wouldn’t happen.  And everything critics said would happen.  So are the proponents of Obamacare just so utterly ignorant?  Or were they lying through their teeth because they just wanted to take over one-sixth of the U.S. economy?  With an agenda to increase the size of government one has to go with lying through their teeth.

President Obama blamed George W. Bush for the world hating America.  When he became president he no longer projected American power.  Instead he wanted to talk to our enemies.  To negotiate with them.  He even dropped words from official usage.  Like the War on Terror.  To make our enemies like us.  Because people like people who aren’t bullies.  And that was what George W. Bush was.  A bully.  So President Obama warmed up to the Islamic world.  So the Islamic world would warm up to us.  Even announcing withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan early in his administration.  Ending the war on you-know-what.  So he could use that money for Obamacare.  Promising the American people the world would be a safer place.  Even passing on an opportunity to help overthrow the government in Iran.  America’s greatest enemy.  Instead, he helped people overthrow a couple of our allies.  Hosni Mubarak in Egypt.  And Muammar Gaddafi in Libya.  Who since the Iraq war had been an ally in the War on Terror.  And the thanks for this new Islam-friendly American policy?  They killed our ambassador in Benghazi along with three other Americans.  Al Qaeda is now in Libya.  And the Muslim Brotherhood is in Egypt.  And it looks like al Qaeda is now in Syria.  Another enemy of the United States the people were trying to overthrow that President Obama chose not to help.  The Middle East may burn now.  Making the world a more dangerous place.  But the president got what he wanted.  All that money we were spending overseas they can now spend at home.  Rewarding friends and campaign contributors.  As well as buying votes.

And now they are calling for tighter gun control measures.  Greater background checks.  And a national gun register.  To protect the kids they say.  So another Newtown massacre doesn’t happen.  Even though they themselves will admit that every measure they proposed thus far would not have stopped the shooter at Newton.  Aurora.  Tucson.  Virginia Tech.  Or any other shooting where some mentally unsound person killed random strangers.  These people didn’t kill because guns made them kill.  They killed because they were sick.  And we didn’t protect society by institutionalizing these people.  The only thing we could have done to stop them once they started shooting we didn’t do.  Having someone armed in these ‘gun-free’ zones.  For these sick people shoot unarmed innocents until someone with a gun arrives on the scene to shoot back.  So arming teachers may save children from another Newtown.  While everything they proposed thus far will do absolutely nothing to prevent a future Newton.  Yet they press for further restrictions on gun ownership.  And if it won’t make children safer one wonders why they want to exploit these shootings to advance their anti-gun-ownership agenda.  As they are interested in acquiring greater wealth and power one would have to assume it’s the power.  Perhaps making them feel more all-powerful if they can actually nullify the Second Amendment.

So politicians promise and lie to advance an agenda.  Which is why the young typically vote for those who promise and lie so much.  The liberal Democrats.  As the young are naïve and easy to lie to.  While older people tend to vote Republican.  For they are older.  They have heard all of the promises and lies before.  And they’re wiser.  Which comes with age.  Which is why the liberal Democrats get them while they’re young. For it’s hard to keep them once they gain knowledge and experience.

Corporate Politics, Bureaucracy and Obamacare

Posted by PITHOCRATES - April 4th, 2013

Politics 101

Fundamental Truth

Politicians love Keynesian Economics because it’s a Pathway to European Social Democracy

For years now we’ve been hearing about President Obama’s efforts to create jobs.  Going all the way back to that laser-like focus he was putting on job creation.  And there was that $800 billion stimulus bill.  That stimulated little but Democrat campaign contributors.  The president has been talking about job creation for a long time.  Yes, he can talk the talk.  But he sure can’t walk the walk.

A big reason why the economy is still so anemic is in large part due to Obamacare.  The onerous requirements of the new health care law have frozen new hiring.  And dampened business growth.  For all those small businesses that are just starting up and trying to gain some traction see massive new costs coming their way.  On top of the massive costs they’re paying already.  From taxes.  To regulatory costs.  Increasing the cost of doing business.  And leaving less and less to reinvest into their business.  So they can grow and hire new people.  Creating jobs.  Which is something the president claims he’s all for.  Yet it is his policies that are preventing these job creators from creating jobs.  And there is a reason for that.

The president and the Democrat Party (and many in the Old Guard of the Republican Party) are Keynesians.  And they believe in the economic policies of John Maynard Keynes.  Which ushered in the era of Big Government.  And massive interventions into the private economy.  A substitution for socialism.  Providing a pathway to socialism.  As in the European variety.  Those social democracies that are all wallowing in the European sovereign debt crisis.  Because their governments grew too large.  Intervened too much into the private economy.  And spent far too much money they didn’t have.

Nixon, Ford and Carter tried Keynesian Economics on a Grand Scale once Nixon Decoupled the Dollar from Gold

All government economists are Keynesian economists.  The Keynesians tell their friends in government to keep interest rates artificially low to stimulate the economy.  Because they believe that even though consumer demand isn’t there businesses will borrow this cheap money and expand production.  And hire more people.  Also, if the economy is not performing as it should be the government needs to spend money.  With make-work programs. Paying people to do things like dig ditches.  And fill them back in.  Because they will take their earnings and spend it.  Creating economic activity.  And the government should do this with deficit spending.  Spending money they don’t have.  Either by printing it.  Or borrowing it.

They have been trying this since World War I or so.  In fact, Keynes met with FDR.  Telling him about his economic theories.  Some of which FDR took to heart.  For he did increase the size of government.  And he spent money on a lot of make-work programs.  None of which pulled the economy out of the Great Depression.  And he tried for over ten years.  Nixon, Ford and Carter tried Keynesian economics on a grand scale.  Once Nixon decoupled the dollar from gold.  Stopping the gold flow out of the country due to Nixon’s inflationary policies (foreign governments said if you want to make the U.S. dollar worthless we’ll take the gold instead at the promised exchange rate of $35/ounce).  Once they no longer had to honor that promise they were able to print even more money. Unleashing an inflation that reached double digits in the Seventies.  And caused massive unemployment and stagnant economic growth.  Stagflation.

This was a failure of Keynesian economics.  For the theory went if you have a recession you used inflation to end it.  And you did that by printing money.  But instead of an improved economy all they got was inflation (and higher prices) to go with an already bad economy.  Which just made everything worse.  Had they continued the classical economic policies that made America the number one economic power in the world (thrift, low taxes, low regulations, the gold standard, savings, etc.) there would have been no inflation.  And there would have been a lot of new economic activity.  Because this is what happened in the past with these policies.  While every time Keynesians tried to spend their way out of a recession it has never worked.  As the historical record clearly documents.

Obamacare will do to Health Care what Government has done to Businesses in our Big Metropolitan Cities

Now either those in government don’t understand this.  Or they do.  And just don’t care about the economic damage they cause as they are more interested in expanding their control over the private economy than they are about the American people.  Which means they’re either not very smart.  Or they’re devious.  Lying to the American people just to advance their agenda.  A larger and more powerful federal government.  Compounding this problem is that most of our politicians don’t understand the first thing about business.  Most are lawyers who think businesses are little more than cash piñatas.  Good for suing.  Or taxing.  But they have no idea how they work.  Which builds the case for our politicians not being very smart.  As well as being devious.

Worse, it’s these same people who are regulating the hell out of our businesses.  These people who don’t understand the first thing about running a business.  But are killing small businesses with costly regulations.  Especially in the big cities.  Where there is so much costly red tape to cut through to open a business.  And to run a business.  Especially if you want to hire employees.  A regulatory nightmare few business owners ever expected.  And so complex and costly that a lot of businesses fail because they don’t charge enough to cover all of their costs.  But these politicians don’t care.  As evidenced by the amount of business they drive out of large metropolitan cities.  Detroit once was the automotive capital of the world.  But the city government grew so large and costly that the costs of doing business in Detroit soared to pay for it.  Making it just too costly to do business in Detroit.  So businesses left.  First the jobs left.  Then the people.  The two greatest employers in Detroit these days are the City of Detroit.  And the Detroit Public Schools.  Both paid with tax dollars.  Generated by businesses.  That are no longer there.  So facing bankruptcy due to the crushing costs of government (primarily pensions and health care benefits), the governor declared an emergency.  And assigned an emergency manager to fix Detroit’s finances.

Now the people who destroyed the business environment in our big metropolitan cities are taking over health care.  Who know even less about health care than they do about running a business.  There are some doctors in Congress.  But only approximately 3.7% are doctors.  And only 16 of the 20 are Republicans.  So they will have little say with the Democrat-passed Obamacare.  While Obamacare will do to health care what government has done to businesses in our big metropolitan cities.  It will destroy it.  Because health care is very complex.  Doctors spent some 8 years of schooling to become a doctor.  And spend their career in continuing education to stay current in their fields.  But who will be managing these professionals now?  Rank amateurs.  For only in government can rank amateurs be put in charge of industries.

Perception, President Obama and the Rand Paul Filibuster

Posted by PITHOCRATES - March 14th, 2013

Politics 101

Sound Bites and Photo Opportunities define our Politicians Today

Perception is in the eye of the beholder.  Are you familiar with the story about a real estate broker?  He works in a small town with a main road through it connecting two larger cities.  A lot of traffic travels this road.  This broker has two properties listed for sale.  One on the road into town.  And one on the road out of town.  All of these cars driving through this town see those two signs and think, “Wow, this guy must be the biggest broker in town.  I see his signs everywhere.”

But he is not the biggest broker in town.  But because his two signs are on the busiest road in town the perception is that he is.  Because people can’t enter the town or leave the town without seeing one of what seem to be many of his signs.  If they drove on the other streets of this town they would not see any of his signs.  While they would see a great many of his competitors’ signs.  With a detailed analysis people would conclude that this real estate broker is the smallest and least successful in town.  But with only a cursory glance he is the biggest broker in town.  This is perception.

Politicians understand perception.  So they work hard to shape what people see and hear.  And less on substance.  That’s why sound bites and photo opportunities define our politicians.  Politicians get their picture taken with babies and the down trodden to show how much they care.  Their speeches will be nothing but a series of sound bites suitable for quoting by the talking heads on television and in political ads.  And they will always answer a question with a prepared talking point.  Instead of answering the question.  And when it comes to campaigning they will take everything their opponents say out of context to change everyone’s perception about them.

Our Schools teach our Kids that a Just Society uses Government to Redistribute Wealth to make Society Fairer

Democrats are masters at creating perception.  Which is easy to do when you have the mainstream media in your pocket.  As well as college professors and high school teachers.  The entertainment industry.  The music industry.  Etc.  This small sliver of people has a profound impact on the masses.  For they dominate what people hear and learn.  And with them having a far left ideology their message is far left.  So when this small sliver of people fills our airwaves, cable television, movies and our classrooms their minority viewpoint creates the perception of being the majority viewpoint.  Like that real estate broker.  Because it’s everywhere.  While the majority of people who don’t share their ideology aren’t on television or in the movies.  On the radio or teaching our kids in the classroom.

The perception our kids have of America when graduating from high school is not that good.  Our teachers teach them that America stole the land from the Indians.  And stole Spanish America from the Spanish who stole it from the Indians.  They teach that slavery is America’s original sin.  As if America invented the institution of slavery.  Despite slavery having been around as long as civilization has been around.  They teach that America grew rich because of free slave labor.  Despite the South losing the American Civil War because the institution of slavery so impoverished the South that it was no match for what the North’s paid-labor could produce.  They teach our kids that capitalism is unfair and that profits are evil.  Despite the greatest oppression of people (as well as the lowest standards of living and greatest famines) has always been in anti-capitalistic nations (the Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China, North Korea, Cuba, the countries of Eastern Europe during the cold war, etc.).  While at the same time they teach our kids the goodness of government.  And gloss over the oppression and privations of socialist/communist countries everywhere.

So our kids graduate from high school with the perception that if government doesn’t greatly regulate the free market the greed of capitalism will cause great unfairness.  And that a just society uses government to redistribute wealth to make society fairer.  And that anyone who opposes higher taxes and greater regulation to facilitate this fairer society hates kids.  They want to pollute our air and water.  They want unsafe food.  They want women to die from cancer.  They hate the planet.  Poor people.  Gay people.  Etc.  They hear this so often and so consistently that they accept it as the majority opinion.  And when they go on to college or start watching the news this perception is reinforced.  Which is why our young people vote Democrat.  Because the perception is that Democrats are for the working man.  The party that puts people before profits.  While the Republicans put rich people, and their money, before everything else.

Was it the Rand filibuster that made President Obama launch a Charm Offensive?

A big part of forming perceptions is not telling the truth. When President Obama was candidate Obama he didn’t want to nationalize health care.  He opposed same-sex marriage.  He didn’t support gun control.  He talked about transparency.  He attacked President Bush for being fiscally irresponsible.  And for running massive deficits that added to the debt.  He talked about not spending more than the government collected.  But the real President Obama was none of this.  And the real President Obama has never left campaign mode.  For he doesn’t govern.  He continues to campaign.  Against Republicans.  Blaming them for every problem exasperated by his own policies.  And, of course, he continues to blame George W. Bush.  Always attacking Republicans.  Always blaming Republicans.  To reinforce a perception of the Republican Party that will benefit him.  And his party.  So he can win the House back in 2014.  And finally govern as he always wanted to govern.  As a president with no political opposition to restrain his powers.

The president’s Middle East foreign policy has been a disaster.  He refused to support a Democracy movement in Iran.  Our enemy.  While supporting a democracy movement in Egypt.  And in Libya.  Our allies in the War on Terror.  (But not in Syria.  An ally of Iran.)  Now the Middle East is becoming Islamist.  And closer to Iran.  Our enemy.  And the enemy of peace and stability.  This disastrous policy came to a head in Benghazi.  Where four Americans died to advance the perception that President Obama had al Qaeda on the ropes.  When in fact they were resurgent in Benghazi.  Which our ambassador knew.  And tried to tell his boss.  Hillary Clinton.  Begging for more security.  Which never came.  When questioned in Congress about who edited the talking points that Secretary Rice used on the Sunday morning talk shows to advance the lie that it was not al Qaeda but a spontaneous uprising in response to a YouTube video that no one had seen she yelled with righteous indignation, “What difference did it make!?!”  An answer no one accepted in the Watergate investigation.  Which Clinton assisted with as a young attorney.  Back then a government cover-up made a big difference.  Which led to impeachment hearings.  That ended when President Nixon resigned.  But the Obama administration would escape that fate.  For the perception was that this was a Republican partisan witch hunt.  Because they were racists and hated the president.  And with all their support in entertainment, education and the news the people accepted this perception.  And apparently didn’t care about the cover-up of Benghazi.  Unlike they were about the cover-up of Watergate that resulted in no dead Americans.

And this is what made the Rand Paul filibuster so powerful.  For he dared to challenge the perception that the Obama administration was sweet and innocent and transparent unlike the ‘criminal’ administration of George W. Bush.  President Obama has expanded the use of drones.  He has killed more people with them than George W. Bush.  And a lot more innocent bystanders.  Including a few Americans.  Even appearing to want to reserve the right to use a drone strike on Americans on U.S. soil without due process even if they posed no imminent threat.  The Obama administration finally stated that they wouldn’t do that.  But not before those on the Left took notice of Rand Paul’s filibuster.  Including Jon Stewart of the Daily Show.  People who expected something like this from the Bush administration.  But not from the Obama administration.  Giving the Obama administration some rare negative press.  Just enough to get some people to ask, “They want to do what?!?”  And the fact that it took a 13-hour filibuster to get a simple ‘no’ out of the administration makes it look like, perhaps, it’s the Democrats who are not trying to cooperate with the Republicans.  Unlike the perception that it’s the Republicans that are being uncooperative.  Perhaps explaining why the president has launched a charm offensive.  To improve a tarnished perception that they never had to do before.  Thanks to the Rand Paul filibuster.
