The Social Democracies of Europe were all Oppressive Absolute Monarchies at one Time

What happened in Newtown, Connecticut, was a tragedy.  The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary took 26 lives.  Including 20 children.  The most innocent of us.  Which has ignited a firestorm of debate over guns.  The Left blames these deaths on an epidemic of gun violence.  Caused by people having access to guns.  So the Left wants to have a real debate on gun control.  To stop this epidemic of child deaths caused by firearms.  By severely restricting access to guns.

Those on the Right, on the other hand, want to protect their Second Amendment right.  The right to keep and bear arms.  Which allowed the First Amendment.  Freedom of speech.  The British colonial governors tried hard to clamp down on the anti-British sentiment in their American colonies.  And to muzzle that anti-British speech.  They sent over British Red Coats to occupy American cities to keep order.  And to find and confiscate the Americans’ guns.  So the first few amendments of the Bill of Rights (the first 10 amendments) protected free speech.  Gave us the power to protect ourselves from future state oppressors.  And they even included the Third Amendment.  Which states, “No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.”  Again, further protection from state oppression.

The nature of states is to oppress their people.  Most have throughout history.  Even the social democracies of Europe were all oppressive absolute monarchies at one time.  Where kings could do pretty much anything they wanted to.  England changed that with representative government.  America expanded on these liberties in the New World.  And ever since has been very wary of government.  Until the Twentieth century.  When the growth of government began.  Transferring ever more power to the federal government.  Everything the Founding Fathers feared would happen without a Bill of Rights.

When it comes to Restricting our Constitutional Rights Liberals Trust Government while Fearing Republicans

Those on the Left say the Constitution is a relic of a different age.  That today’s government is a kinder government.  A more caring government.  One that just wants to take care of the people.  By providing generous benefits.  Of course this is how some of the worst dictatorships started.  Nazi Germany and the USSR both put the people first.  Or so they said.  Even their names said they were putting the people first.  The Nazis were National Socialists.  And the USSR was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.  Socialism is all about taking care of the people.  Yet these nations had some the most brutal secret police that terrorized and oppressed their people.  For there is no easier way to dictatorial power than championing the people.  And once the people stop fearing their government is when the state can take away their guns.  To make that oppression easier.  The Syrian government is currently having difficulty oppressing their people because they failed to keep guns out of the hands of those they wish to oppress.

If you read a history book you will read a lot about state secret police and state oppression.  It’s more the rule than the exception.  When you grow up in a free country it’s hard to believe this.  And when you’re young you think whatever you know and have experienced is normal.  And that things have always been that way.  Which is why the younger liberals dismiss talk about the transfer of power to the federal government.  While the older conservatives who have seen great change in their lives and know history still fear their government.  While the younger liberals grow up believing that government is not to be feared but to be trusted blindly.  They even look at what China is doing with their economy with approval.  Where the government controls the economy.  They like that.  Because liberals believe we can always trust a government more than a private corporation.  Even if that government oppresses their people.  Like they do in China.  Where people still deal with famine in the country.  Rural workers are paid poorly and live in dormitories in the city factories.  And political dissidents are tortured in labor camps where they manufacture goods without pay.

So naïve liberals trust government.  Completely.  Unless it’s George W. Bush using the Patriot Act.  That they fear.  But when President Obama uses the Patriot Act liberals ask, “The Patriot what?”  When it came to secret wiretaps on people with known ties to terrorists the Left quaked with fear over where these abuses of power would end.  But when President Obama starts talking about gun control they haven’t a care in the world.  Because when it comes to restricting our constitutional rights liberals trust government while fearing Republicans.

People killed 37 Kids with Guns in 2010 while Partial-Birth Abortions have claimed some 2,000 Lives a Year

President Obama’s former Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, said, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”  For the best way to advance an agenda (especially an unpopular agenda) was in the emotional chaos following a serious crisis.  Such as the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.  The majority of Americans oppose gun control.  But in that majority are some people that they may be able to convince that some restrictions on the Second Amendment is a good thing in the emotional chaos following Sandy Hook Elementary.  Convincing them that guns are causing an epidemic of childhood deaths.  That without guns these kids simply wouldn’t be dying.  A powerful message during emotional times.  But if you remove the emotions and look at some facts you see something different (see 10 Leading Causes of Death, United States by the Centers for Disease Control).

These are deaths by unintentional injury.  Looking at the leading causes of death in 2010 (the latest year of data) for children aged 5-14 you see 1,643 deaths.  About half (809) of those are from motor vehicle accidents.  Drowning came in next at 251 (15.3%).  Then fire/burn at 135 (8.2%).  Then suffocation at 79 (4.8%).  You have to go all the way down to number 7 on the list to get to firearms.  Where we can see they killed 37 children in 2010.  Or 2.3% of the total number of kids aged 5-14 who died from an unintentional injury.  Based on an approximate population of 41 million kids aged 5-14 the total number of kids killed by firearms comes to about 0.00009% of this total.  According to the CDC’s numbers, guns aren’t killing a lot of kids.  Motor vehicles are.  But firearms are not.  So taking away our guns will probably not change these numbers much.  If at all.  So the motive can’t be saving children’s lives.  In fact, one can make the argument that there is a greater killer of children out there than anything on the above list.  Abortion.

It’s hard to get numbers on abortions.  But if you check various sources the number appears to be over a million a year.  Wikipedia shows 1,313,000 abortions in 2000.  Including 2,232 (about 0.17% of all abortions in 2000) that were partial-birth abortions.  Whatever your politics on the abortion issue are one thing regarding partial-birth abortions is clear.  These are human lives.  For the ‘partial’ part of these abortions requires terminating the life of the fetus while the head is still inside of the mother.  For if they terminated the life of the fetus outside of the mother it would be murder according to the law.  And you can’t kill something that isn’t alive.  In fact, an accidental wrongful death of a pregnant woman often results in two charges of manslaughter.  One for the mother.  And one for the unborn fetus.  Assuming there was no spike in partial-birth abortions in 2000 one can assume that number is representative of all years.  Which is far more deaths than by motor vehicle accident let alone from firearms.  Yet President Obama wants gun control to save kids lives.  When he could save even more by simply revising his stance on partial-birth abortion.  Something he argued to keep when a state senator in Illinois.

Adam Lanza suffered Severe Mental Health Issues that drove him to Violence

Posted by PITHOCRATES - December 29th, 2013

Week in Review

There is a line on the sit-com The Big Bang Theory where Leonard warns someone that Sheldon is one lab accident away from being a super-villain.  Here’s what Wikipedia says about Sheldon.

Sheldon exhibits a strict adherence to routine, a total lack of social skills, a tenuous understanding of humor, a general lack of humility or empathy, and displays textbook narcissistic behavior. He also has a very hard time recognizing irony and sarcasm in other people although he himself often employs them… Despite speculation that Sheldon’s personality traits may be consistent with Asperger syndrome, obsessive–compulsive personality disorder and asexuality,[5][7] co-creator Bill Prady has repeatedly stated that Sheldon’s character was neither conceived nor developed with regard to any of these conditions.[7]

The Big Bang Theory is a comedy.  And Jim Parsons plays Sheldon brilliantly.  He’s hilarious.  But what the show jokes about can be a real danger.   As a person with exceptional intelligence suffering from these mental health issues can become dangerous.  And the further from reality they drift the more dangerous they can become (see Newtown killer had occasionally violent tendencies by Larry Copeland posted 12/27/2013 on USA Today).

The mentally troubled gunman in the Newtown massacre had obsessive behavior, changing his socks as many as 20 times a day, and his mother tried to manage her life around the bizarre quirks of her son, according to thousands of pages of documents released by Connecticut State Police on Friday…

He had apparently displayed signs of the potential for violent behavior to at least one former teacher…

One of Lanza’s former teachers told investigators that the shooter was anti-social and that he rarely interacted with other students.

“I remember giving creative writing assignments to students instructing them to write a page or two on whatever they wanted to talk about,” she said. “Adam would write ten pages, obsessing about battles, destruction and war. In my years of experience, I have known (redacted) grade boys to talk about things like this, but Adam’s level of violence was disturbing. I remember showing the writings to the Principal at the time. Adam’s creative writing was so graphic that it could not be shared…”

One witness, a man who told police he’d known Nancy Lanza for about two years, said he was aware that Lanza “suffered from Asperger Syndrome…

Another witness told police that Nancy “had taken him out of school because he was sensitive to sound and light.” A nurse told investigators that Nancy Lanza had to do three loads of laundry a day because Adam Lanza obsessively changed his clothes, sometimes changing his socks 20 times a day…

“(The witness) said that Nancy Lanza told him she had no intentions of re-marrying and accepted the obligations of caring for Adam. Nancy said that she and Adam planned for her trip to New Hampshire. The trip was an experiment to allow Adam to stay at home alone for a few days.”

As soon as the Newtown massacre hit the media the left was calling for new gun control legislation.  Even before they knew who Adam Lanza was.  Or the extent of his mental issues.  And they were extensive.  This kid should have been institutionalized.  His mother resigned herself to living the rest of her life taking care of him.  Probably because that was the only option available to her.  As it can be difficult to commit someone until they have proven to be a danger to the public.  Something that is typically proven by committing an act that harms someone.  Of course by that time it’s too late.  As in the case of Adam Lanza.  James Holmes (2012 Aurora shooting).  Jared Loughner (2011 Tucson supermarket massacre).  Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech Massacre).

Were the guns to blame?  Or the madmen firing the guns?  A lot of people own guns.  But very few of them commit massacres.  Perhaps the better question is this.  If guns were unavailable to these people would they have still found a way to kill?  As smart as they were?  Or would these ‘super-villains’ have just said, “Oh well.  No guns available so I guess it’s sanity for me.”  And walk away from their delusions?  Or would they think of another way?

Taking guns away won’t stop these people from hurting others.  They may have just used their intelligence to think of another way.  Perhaps one more deadly than shooting people one at a time.  Identifying them early and institutionalizing them would work better.  For if they were institutionalized they wouldn’t be able to hurt anyone.  With a gun.  Or with anything else their intelligence dreamt up.

The Left Politicizes Atrocities to Attack Conservatives

Posted by PITHOCRATES - April 18th, 2013

Politics 101

Democrats Quickly Politicized the Boston Marathon Bombings to attack Conservatives

What’s the difference between conservatives and liberals?  Well, for one, they respond to horrific tragedies differently.  Conservatives are sickened and saddened.  While liberals salivate with a potential opportunity to blame conservatives for these horrific events.  Which they are quick to do.  Even before the dead are identified and laid to rest.  As we can see in the Boston marathon bombings.

We don’t know anything yet.  But the media has been reporting on what we don’t know 24 hours a day since the bombings.  And on the day of the attack there have been those in the media already making the case that the bomber is possibly a ‘radical’ conservative.  Because it happened on April 15.  Tax Day.  During the Patriots’ Day holiday in Boston.  Not far from the anniversary of the fiery end of the Waco siege.  Even someone in the media wrote that they were hoping that it was the actions of an angry white man.  So it wouldn’t hurt the liberal political agenda.  More gun control.  And less restrictions on immigration.  So if the bomber(s) entered the country illegally (i.e., they’re not angry white men) that could hurt their attempts at creating new Democrat voters by giving illegal immigrants amnesty.

Former Democrat Congressman Barney Frank was quick to politicize the bombings, too.  He said the response of the first-responders proves the value of big government.  For no tax cuts or limited government would have made the response any better.  Another Democrat Congress person blamed the bombings on the sequester.  The cut in federal spending allowed these bombers to detonate these two bombs.  So on the one hand you have one Congress person saying how well the government handled the situation because we don’t have limited government or tax cuts while you have another saying the government was so weakened by the sequester that they were unable to stop these bombers.  Positions on opposite ends of the spectrum.  But with one thing in common.  They both attack conservatives.

The Left Gleefully reports a Conservative Connection in any Horrible Act of Violence even when there is None

They blamed the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on radical gun-toting conservatives.  Anxious to prove that the shooter was a card carrying member of some conservative organization.  And were quite disappointed to find the shooter was just someone with mental health problems who the state should have institutionalized.  Who lived in his mother’s basement playing violent video games and earning high-scores with high kill numbers.  Some have even suggested that he was living in the fantasy world of the videogame when he started shooting.  Scoring points with each kill.  Reloading even before his magazines were empty (like during lulls in a videogame so you had a full magazine for the next shooting encounter).  And killing himself before the cops could kill him, resetting his game points to zero.  There are a lot of theories.  But with his suicide we can’t know for sure his motive.

Nothing would have prevented this shooting other than locking him up in an institution while he was learning about past mass shootings.  Planning his crime.  And playing hours of video games in his basement.  Adam Lanza was sick.  He was mentally unsound.  He had trouble interacting with people.  And separating the real world from the fantasy world of his video gaming.  But one thing he wasn’t was a radical conservative.  But it didn’t stop the liberal Democrats from blaming the Sandy Hook massacre on a conservative gun culture.  And using it to try and pass long-desired gun control legislation.  Instead of addressing mental health problems.  The cause of the Sandy Hook massacre.  In fact, during the last few decades the Left has made it more difficult to commit someone who is a danger to society.  And they exploded the use of drugs to treat a laundry list of childhood developmental problems.  Such as drugging a generation of kids for having attention deficit disorder.  Trusting in medication to make them safe and well behaved.  Leaving dangerous people free to hurt people.  Dangerous people like Adam Lanza.

Mental health problems are a main theme in many mass killings.  Before Newtown there was the 2012 Aurora theater shooting.  Where the shooter was a mentally sick individual.  James Holmes.  Who the state should have institutionalized.  As soon as his name was released a person in the media reported he was a member of the Tea Party.  Because he found a James Holmes in Aurora that was a member of the Tea Party.  Which they gleefully reported so they could show this horrible act of violence was by some gun-toting conservative.  Only it wasn’t THAT James Holmes.  The Aurora shooter had no connection to conservative politics whatsoever.

When Emotions are Running High the Left can Pass Legislation they’ve never been able to Pass Before

In Tucson in 2011 Jared Loughner went on a shooting spree.  Killing six.  And shooting Representative Gabrielle Giffords in the head.  The media immediately started blaming conservative Sarah Palin for inciting this rampage.  Because she had a bulls-eye on her website showing certain Congressional districts in the cross hairs.  Including Giffords’.  But was Jared Loughner incited to his crime by Palin?  No.  For he wouldn’t have gone on her website.  He was a registered Independent.  He hated George W. Bush.  He even believed that 9/11 was a government plot.  And was a paranoid schizophrenic who abused drugs and alcohol.

Nidal Malik Hasan shot and killed 13 people and wounded 30 at Fort Hood in 2009.  He was a major in the Army who had recently converted to Islam.  Was in communication with Yemen-based cleric Anwar al-Awlaki who was a known security threat.  And reportedly shouted what Islamist terrorists shout before they start killing.  Allahu Akbar!  Which translates to “God is great.”  But instead of calling this an act of terrorism President Obama called it workplace violence.  Because he was trying to wind down the War on Terror.  So he could use that money to pay for Obamacare.  And having an act of terrorism on a U.S Army post didn’t help with that agenda.

Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2007.  He also suffered from mental disorders going back to middle school.  Who had problems similar to Adam Lanza.  Something his college knew nothing about because of federal privacy laws.  Laws that protected the individual by putting the public at risk.  As an adult Cho chose to discontinue his therapy.  And his behavior became similar to how James Holmes would later act when he was in college.  Which is when the state probably should have committed him.  After the shooting rampage the Left blamed easy access to guns as the cause of the shooting.  Not their failed mental health policies.

One can see a general pattern.  The Left likes having these atrocities happen.  At least based on how they politicize these atrocities.  And why do they politicize these atrocities?  Because they can’t beat their political opponents in the arena of ideas.  So they turn to character assaults.  To destroy their political opponents.  By trying to blame these atrocities on conservatives.  And their cruel and unfeeling policies.  That kill school children.  And when emotions are running high they can pass legislation they’ve never been able to pass before.  Like gun control.  And they don’t run higher than when children die.

Health Care Professionals say School Shootings are Rare therefore we shouldn’t Overreact with Gun Control Legislation

Posted by PITHOCRATES - March 31st, 2013

Week in Review

President Obama is pushing for more gun control legislation.  Before the memories of Newtown fade.  To overreact before the emotions fade.  Even though most legislation proposed thus far would not have changed the outcome at Newtown.  It was a tragedy.  But a rare tragedy.  And trying to take the guns out of the hands of all the future unknown school shooters will probably fail.  For no legislation is perfect.  And no enforcement is perfect.  If there were hundreds or thousands of these shooters it might make a difference.  But trying to find 2 or 3 or 4 shooters across the country will be impossible.  Which is the ultimate reason for the tragedy at Newtown.  It was a statistically rare event.  As a child in school is more likely to die from a lightning strike than from gunfire.

You know what would probably work better?  Arming a few people in that school.  But not telling anyone who they are.  Why would this work?  Because people like Adam Lanza pick defenseless people to hurt.  Because they don’t want anyone hurting them.  That’s why they pick places where people can’t shoot back.  And hopefully where they won’t fight back.  So if it’s public knowledge that there are a few people in that school carrying a gun but a potential shooter doesn’t know who, he is less likely to break into that school out of fear that he may walk into someone with a gun (see Adam Lanza Newtown search warrants released by Jason Sickles and Dylan Stableford posted on Yahoo! News).

Connecticut State Attorney Stephen J. Sedensky III, who’s overseeing the case, said Adam Lanza killed 26 people within five minutes of storming into Sandy Hook Elementary School before turning a gun on himself…

Lanza killed all 26 school victims with a Bushmaster .223-caliber model XM15 rifle for which he had 10 magazines capable of carrying 30 rounds each. Sedensky’s report says officers recovered 154 spent casings and 58 unfired rounds for the assault-style rifle from inside the school.

Lanza was also armed with a Glock 10 mm handgun, a 9 mm Sig Sauer P226 handgun and additional ammunition for both. Inside the car Lanza drove to the school, police found a 12-gauge shotgun and two magazines containing 70 rounds of ammunition. Lanza took his own life with the Glock as police were arriving at the school, the report states.

Lanza had enough guns and ammunition to shoot for more than five minutes.  And he probably could have held the police off for awhile.  But he didn’t.  Once someone aggressive arrived on the scene he quickly took his own life.  For he had no interest trading shots with anyone.  Once again showing why he and others like him choose schools and theaters for their carnage.  For these aren’t tough guys.  There often quiet loners.  Shut off from other human contact.  Who are even afraid of people.  Fantasizing about life in a video game.  Where they find escape from a world where they find no enjoyment.  And they know they aren’t alone.  For they read the papers.  Perhaps getting inspired.  From articles like the one they found in Lanza’s house.

Exhibit #630 – One (1) New York Times article on 02/18/08 of a school shooting at Northern Illinois University.

Finding these people will be all but impossible with background checks.  But if they knew that someone could shoot back at them it may dissuade them.  And it would probably help not to give them so much press.  For a news story could be the thing that pushes one of these people over the edge.  It may normalize such an atrocity in the mind of someone disturbed.  Making the shooter move from fantasy to reality.  With nothing to stop them.  Except, perhaps, if the intended targets are not so passive (see Schools Are Training Second-Graders to Attack Mass Shooters by Deanna Pan posted 3/28/2013 on Mother Jones, bold added for emphasis).

In the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, politicians and educators have debated fiercely about how our nation should protect school children—with some schools turning to controversial tactics…

Ever since the 1999 massacre at Columbine High, K-12 schools in many states have been required by law to have emergency management plans; often these include lockdown drills for dealing with a violent intrusion, although such an event is statistically rare

[Greg] Crane [a former SWAT officer and schoolteacher in Texas who created Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate—A.L.i.C.E.—to train students what do if a shooter comes into the classroom] points instead to the 1998 shooting at Thurston High School in Oregon, where 15-year-old Kipland Kinkel fired 50 rounds in the cafeteria, killing two students and injuring two dozen others before he was tackled by his classmates…

“It wasn’t a staff member who led the rush against him that took him to the ground and disarmed him. It was a 17-year-old student, Jake Rykar,” Crane notes. “If they had maintained that passive, static posture on the floor, with all those hundreds of kids in the cafeteria, there’s no telling what the outcome could have been that day.”

But Dr. Stephen Brock of the National Association of School Psychologists says teaching such tactics may cause unnecessary anxiety and stress for students, particularly young ones who are more easily traumatized. “It strikes me as an overreaction and potentially dangerous,” Brock says. “School shootings are extremely rare. The odds of a student becoming a victim are 1 in 2.5 million. The odds of getting struck by lightning? One in 700,000.”

Crane says that he has seen an uptick in interest in his program after every mass shooting—but that it has increased by an order of magnitude since Newtown. In the first weekend after the attack, Crane’s company was hit with more than 2,000 email inquiries, he says, with little letup since. To date, according to his company’s website, more than 300 schools and universities have trained 1.6 million students using A.L.i.C.E.

If you ever watched a Friday the 13th movie you’ll see that most victims share one thing in common.  They run, they cringe and they cry but rarely do they fight back.  Even when they do knock Jason down they just keep running away.  Until they eventually become a victim, too.  So there is something to be said about fighting back.  For anyone who walks into an elementary school is as evil as the fictional Jason.  But unlike Jason these shooters can be hurt.  Even scared.  As they always pick people who are unarmed and are not likely to fight back.  Something an unafraid person probably wouldn’t do.

So do you risk traumatizing children by teaching them to fight back?  Or because it is such a statistically rare event is it simply better to do nothing?  Experts in the field of psychology think so.  And if so should we even be bothering with new gun control legislation?  For as the health care professionals say this is an overreaction for an extremely rare event.  And will probably be as useful as teaching second graders to physically attack a gunman.

Two Armed Police Officers prevent Possible Massacre in Alabama Hospital

Posted by PITHOCRATES - December 15th, 2012

Week in Review

If you ever spent time in a U.S. hospital you probably noticed a few things about security.  As you enter the emergency department the first person you pass is typically an armed police officer.  Either a hospital cop.  Or a city cop.  You may see a patient handcuffed to a gurney with a police officer walking behind it (bad guys sometimes get hurt and have to go to the hospital). And without a security card to swipe to unlock doors there are few places you can go.  Even an elevator won’t stop on the baby floor without a security card swipe.  As people tend to steal babies.  So hospitals tend to be little fortresses who take their security seriously.  Which is one of the safest places a person can be (see Gunman wounds 3 at Alabama hospital posted 12/16/2012 on Sky News).

Authorities in Alabama say a gunman has opened fire in a hospital, wounding an officer and two employees before being fatally shot by police…

Williams says police were called because a man with a gun was walking through St Vincent’s Hospital on Saturday morning.

When he was confronted by officers, he started shooting and wounded one of them. That’s when the second officer shot and killed the man.

Don’t know what this gunman planned on doing but whatever it was he didn’t have a long time to try it.  Swift action by armed cops subdued him before he could kill doctors, nurses and patients.  If that was his plan.

This is why mass murderers target shopping malls, movie theaters, colleges, high schools and elementary schools.  They don’t often walk into police stations, army bases or hospitals.  They prefer soft targets.  Where no one can hurt them.  If some place has people who can shoot back chances are that they are not going to go there.

The shooting at Newtown is a tragedy.  We don’t know much yet.  Other than he had time to shoot 26 people.  Because he was safe to do so.  If it was a day where the police were at the school doing a presentation for the students things would have been different.  Because a cop could have drawn his or her weapon the moment they saw a gun.  And fired back after the first pull of his trigger.  Like the police did in Alabama.

Bo Dietl is a former New York City Police Department detective and now runs a security company.  Since the shooting some schools have contacted him inquiring about an armed, retired police officer to work security in their school.  To have an armed police presence in their schools.  Like that hospital in Alabama.  Because it works.

It would be wrong to politicize this tragedy to push forward new gun control legislation.  For bad people will always get their guns.  And one thing that bad people like are soft targets.  When Florida passed legislation to allow Floridians to carry concealed weapons crimes on tourists increased.  Because bad people like soft targets.  Not those that can shoot back.  So after getting shot by a Floridian or two they started going after unarmed people.  Tourists.

Some will, and are, pointing to gun violence in the U.S. and comparing it to countries with strict gun control countries.  But there are more differences between these countries than gun control laws.  These other countries don’t have movies and television programs with graphic gun violence desensitizing their youth.  Or rap/hip-hop music glorifying gun violence.  Or as many people playing graphic video games filled with guns and murder.  This kind of violence didn’t happen when kids played cowboys and Indians or army back in the Fifties.  And we’ve had guns since the founding of this country.  And before.  There’s more to it than the guns.  You just can’t address the guns if you don’t address the gun violence in our pop culture.  And the lack of civility and societal decay.  If you remove the guns but do nothing to reverse the lack of civility and societal decay bad people will find other ways to hurt soft targets.  Timothy McVeigh didn’t use a gun and he killed 168 people and injured over 800.  The greatest terrorist attack on American soil, 9/11, began when men hijacked 4 commercial airliners with box cutters.  Since then we have armed air marshals on board our airplanes.  And even some pilots began carrying guns.

Guns don’t kill people.  Societal decay does.  It wasn’t that long ago when our parents slept at night without locking their doors.  No one would do that today.  Because society has changed.  People lack empathy.  They’re uncivil.  We do drugs more than we ever have.  More children are born to single women than ever before.  Married parents both have to work to get by these days.  It’s a different world for children today.  And some are growing up differently because of it.  They’re spending less time as innocent children.  And getting into trouble earlier.  Running with gangs.  Mimicking what they see in the movies, on TV and in those video games.  Perhaps having trouble separating what’s real.  And what is just a game.

Hug your kids.  For family is everything.  And say a prayer for those in Newtown.
