Before there was a Nazi Germany there was a German republic. The Weimar Republic. Where people were free to say anything they wanted to. In fact, it was that freedom of speech that allowed Adolf Hitler to rise to power. Who then took that freedom of speech he used away from everyone else. Pumped out state propaganda (i.e., lies). And did horrible things to people. Including to his fellow Germans who dared to speak freely.
Free speech can be an instrument of change. Hitler knew that. And used it. But knowing what an instrument of change speaking freely can be he banned free speech after he effected change with it. And then started the lying. Joseph Goebbels, the head of state propaganda, lied and he lied big. Saying that if the people heard a lie enough they would believe it. Especially a big lie.
Germans are not evil people. But they did vote for members of the Nazi Party. Of course, when they were voting for members of the Nazi Party it wasn’t the Nazi Party of the Holocaust. No. It was a much kinder and gentler Nazi Party. A party for the workers. And the people. For the Nazi Party was the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. It was nothing more than big government taking care of the people. At least, that was the lie. And the people fell for it. Giving us one of the darkest chapters in world history.
The Natural State of Life for people throughout History has been one of Oppression
As Nazi power expanded free speech withered and died. The free press became an arm of the state. Telling the people only what the state wanted the people to hear. Not what the people wanted to know. The truth. No. Instead, all the people got were lies. To advance the state’s agenda. And to squelch any discontent of the state. For the few who dared to speak up or criticize the state the Gestapo (the state police) was there to arrest, torture, imprison or kill them.
This is why truth is so important to a free people. And why it’s such a threat to an oppressive state. For the governed far exceed those who govern. So the only way a minority power can rise to a dictatorship is by cowing the people through fear and intimidation. Keeping them blissfully ignorant of the truth. And feeding them nothing but lies via the state propaganda machine. Something a free press makes difficult to do. Which is why a dictatorship shuts down free speech.
This is something as old as time. For the natural state of life for people throughout history has been one of oppression. Something our Founding Fathers were very aware of being gentlemen of the Enlightenment. And students of history. Which is why they gave us the First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
And a big part of the First Amendment is protection of the truth by the guardians of the truth. A free press.
The Complicit and Corrupt Media supports a Political Agenda instead of being Guardians of the Truth
The free press brought Watergate to the attention of the American people. And caused President Nixon to resign. Because of the cover-up. Not the crime. When Oliver North traded arms for hostages during the Reagan administration the free press was all over that. Irangate. A play on Watergate. And when news surfaced that the Bush family pressured the military to improve President George W. Bush’s Air National Guard service record during the 2004 presidential campaign they were all over that, too. But it turned out that this was a lie. And we now know this as Memogate. For the documents that CBS said proved this were obvious forgeries.
In other words, the media lied during the 2004 presidential campaign. To harm President Bush’s reelection chances. Making the media less of a free press and more an arm of the Democrat Party. A propaganda machine. For the mainstream media these days is less about the truth and more about Democrat propaganda. As the Obama administration has had a flurry of scandals that gets scant coverage in the free press. The IRS targeting of conservatives. Benghazi. Spying on the Associated Press. Accusing journalist James Rosen of being a criminal for reporting unflattering news leaked to him (referred to as Rosengate). Fast and Furious. The lies, misinformation and backroom deals to pass Obamacare into law. Etc.
The legacy of the Obama administration will not be the scandals. But the complicit and corrupt media. A media that was derelict in its duty to safeguard the truth. Instead choosing to disseminate lies. And ignoring news that is unfavorable to the Obama administration. Should this nation stop being exceptional. And become ordinary. Like the history before us where the natural state of life was one of oppression. It won’t be the emerging dictatorship to blame. It will be the complicit and corrupt media that allowed it to happen. By choosing lies over truth. And supporting a political agenda instead of being guardians of the truth.
Twice in little over One Century an Enemy Invaded and Overran Russia/the Soviet Union
On June 24, 1812, Napoleon’s Grande Armée invaded Russia. And made it all the way to Moscow. Which they took. But the Russian army didn’t want anything to do with Napoleon or his Grande Armée so they kept retreating in front of it. Foiling Napoleon’s plans of engaging and defeating the Russian army. While drawing them deeper and deeper into Russia. In a scorched earth retreat. Leaving nothing for the French. Making it difficult to feed his massive army. Then the bitter Russian winter came. Having expected the Russians to have sued for peace by then they had no winter clothing. Leaving Napoleon no choice but to retreat.
On June 22, 1941, Joseph Stalin’s ally, Adolf Hitler, broke the Treaty of Non-aggression between Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. And invaded the Soviet Union. About one month later than planned due to some trouble their Italian allies were having in the Balkans. The Nazi armies advanced through the Soviet armies and reached Leningrad, Moscow and Stalingrad. Then the bitter Russian winter came. And like the French the Germans had no winter clothing. Having expected a victory before the onset of winter. They tried to hold their ground as they froze and starved. But the Soviets pushed them back. Eventually all the way to Berlin. But not after some 20 million Soviets died.
Twice in little over one century an enemy invaded and overran Russia/the Soviet Union. Never again vowed the Soviets. So when they chased the Nazis back into Berlin they kept the territory they were on after the war. Which is why Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Albania became Soviet satellites. Countries behind the Iron Curtain. To provide a buffer to slow down another invasion before it reached Soviet soil.
For the Latter Part of the 20th Century the Soviets tried to extend their Communist Revolution to other Nations
Of course, following World War II it was the Soviets that had an expansionist policy. A little thing called the communist revolution. The assault on capitalism. Replacing it with socialism first. Then communism. And as revolutions go they are fought. With guns. So the communist revolution was a perpetual state of war interrupted with moments of peace. A war the Soviets forced onto their neighbors to get them to join them in their socialist/communist utopia. Something their neighbors didn’t want. And something their other neighbors, the Western Powers, would try to help them avoid.
The German capital, Berlin, fell in East Germany. Berlin, however, was a city divided between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union. The Western Allies supplied West Berlin via truck and rail transport. Until the Soviets closed the borders. In an effort to force West Berlin into the social utopia that was East Berlin. Something the West Berliners wanted no part of. So the Western Powers helped them by supplying the city via the Berlin Airlift. Eventually the Soviets relented. And opened the truck and rail transport into West Berlin.
The Soviets tried to spread their socialist utopia to other countries that didn’t want it. Greece. Turkey. Iran. South Korea. The United States and the Western Powers helped these countries resist these Soviet advances. Even fighting a shooting war on the Korean peninsula to push the Soviet and China backed North Korea out of South Korea. So through the remainder of the 20th century the Soviets tried to extend the communist revolution to other nations. While the United States tried to thwart their designs. And stared each other down with their nuclear weapons in the Cold War. Developing the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). Meaning that any country that started a nuclear war was going to lose, too, in that nuclear exchange. It was mutually assured but it really was a warning to the Soviets. Who had designs on conquering other nations. Including the United States. Who had no designs on waging war with the Soviet Union.
Geopolitics is about the Balance of Power
To balance the threat of the Soviet Union the Western Powers formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). For Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, etc., had no chance by themselves against an attacking Soviet Union. They did as a member of NATO, though. Where an attack on one was an attack on all. Which meant if the Soviets attacked the Low Countries they were also attacking France, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. The Americans even deployed armor units in West Germany. The Soviets replied with the Warsaw Pact. A NATO-like organization between the Soviet Union and some of those countries in Eastern Europe they never left after the end of World War II.
And there was peace. What we call the Pax Americana. The American peace. For it was the awesome might of the American military that gave NATO its teeth. With troops deployed around the world. Air forces stationed within striking distances of potential hotspots. The mightiest navy ever to ply the oceans. A huge nuclear arsenal. And the greatest economy in the world that could pay for all of this while the American people still lived a happy and carefree life with all of the comforts a capitalist society could give. Something the socialism/communism of the Soviet Union could not. For the people in the Soviet sphere waited for apartments, cars and groceries. Large extended families crowded into small apartments. And people waited in lines at stores with empty shelves. Which explains why the Soviets required a brutal secret police force. The KGB.
People in the Soviet sphere who learned of how much better life was in the West tried to escape to the West. This is why they built the Berlin Wall. Not to keep West Berliners from sneaking into that socialist utopia inside East Berlin. But to keep the East Berliners from escaping that socialist utopia. For the only way you can get people to live in that socialist/communist utopia is by force. And you have to spread the communist revolution not to make life better for people in capitalist societies. But to destroy that better life across the border from communist societies. To extinguish that beacon of liberty that keeps luring their people from their oppressive police state. Something Russia is returning to. As Vladimir Putin slowly but surely reassembles the Soviet Union. Not to reconstitute the buffer to protect Russia from another invasion. But simply because he wants to. And can. So far, at least.
Geopolitics is about the balance of power. Some like to maintain a balance of power to keep the peace. Like the Romans, the British and the Americans did with their Pax Romana, Pax Britannica and Pax Americana. Where the prevailing superpower kept the peace. While others are more interested in acquiring power than peace. Like Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Putin. Who didn’t have strong economies. And used force to get what they wanted. Raw materials. Food. Or a warm water port in the Crimea. And they are always looking for a weakness in their enemies to alter the balance of power. For they were/are masters of geopolitics. And want to redraw the borders of the world. To restore the former glory of a past empire. Or to realize some glorious destiny they believe God has planned for the nation.
The Social Democracies of Europe were all Oppressive Absolute Monarchies at one Time
What happened in Newtown, Connecticut, was a tragedy. The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary took 26 lives. Including 20 children. The most innocent of us. Which has ignited a firestorm of debate over guns. The Left blames these deaths on an epidemic of gun violence. Caused by people having access to guns. So the Left wants to have a real debate on gun control. To stop this epidemic of child deaths caused by firearms. By severely restricting access to guns.
Those on the Right, on the other hand, want to protect their Second Amendment right. The right to keep and bear arms. Which allowed the First Amendment. Freedom of speech. The British colonial governors tried hard to clamp down on the anti-British sentiment in their American colonies. And to muzzle that anti-British speech. They sent over British Red Coats to occupy American cities to keep order. And to find and confiscate the Americans’ guns. So the first few amendments of the Bill of Rights (the first 10 amendments) protected free speech. Gave us the power to protect ourselves from future state oppressors. And they even included the Third Amendment. Which states, “No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.” Again, further protection from state oppression.
The nature of states is to oppress their people. Most have throughout history. Even the social democracies of Europe were all oppressive absolute monarchies at one time. Where kings could do pretty much anything they wanted to. England changed that with representative government. America expanded on these liberties in the New World. And ever since has been very wary of government. Until the Twentieth century. When the growth of government began. Transferring ever more power to the federal government. Everything the Founding Fathers feared would happen without a Bill of Rights.
When it comes to Restricting our Constitutional Rights Liberals Trust Government while Fearing Republicans
Those on the Left say the Constitution is a relic of a different age. That today’s government is a kinder government. A more caring government. One that just wants to take care of the people. By providing generous benefits. Of course this is how some of the worst dictatorships started. Nazi Germany and the USSR both put the people first. Or so they said. Even their names said they were putting the people first. The Nazis were National Socialists. And the USSR was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Socialism is all about taking care of the people. Yet these nations had some the most brutal secret police that terrorized and oppressed their people. For there is no easier way to dictatorial power than championing the people. And once the people stop fearing their government is when the state can take away their guns. To make that oppression easier. The Syrian government is currently having difficulty oppressing their people because they failed to keep guns out of the hands of those they wish to oppress.
If you read a history book you will read a lot about state secret police and state oppression. It’s more the rule than the exception. When you grow up in a free country it’s hard to believe this. And when you’re young you think whatever you know and have experienced is normal. And that things have always been that way. Which is why the younger liberals dismiss talk about the transfer of power to the federal government. While the older conservatives who have seen great change in their lives and know history still fear their government. While the younger liberals grow up believing that government is not to be feared but to be trusted blindly. They even look at what China is doing with their economy with approval. Where the government controls the economy. They like that. Because liberals believe we can always trust a government more than a private corporation. Even if that government oppresses their people. Like they do in China. Where people still deal with famine in the country. Rural workers are paid poorly and live in dormitories in the city factories. And political dissidents are tortured in labor camps where they manufacture goods without pay.
So naïve liberals trust government. Completely. Unless it’s George W. Bush using the Patriot Act. That they fear. But when President Obama uses the Patriot Act liberals ask, “The Patriot what?” When it came to secret wiretaps on people with known ties to terrorists the Left quaked with fear over where these abuses of power would end. But when President Obama starts talking about gun control they haven’t a care in the world. Because when it comes to restricting our constitutional rights liberals trust government while fearing Republicans.
People killed 37 Kids with Guns in 2010 while Partial-Birth Abortions have claimed some 2,000 Lives a Year
President Obama’s former Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, said, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” For the best way to advance an agenda (especially an unpopular agenda) was in the emotional chaos following a serious crisis. Such as the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. The majority of Americans oppose gun control. But in that majority are some people that they may be able to convince that some restrictions on the Second Amendment is a good thing in the emotional chaos following Sandy Hook Elementary. Convincing them that guns are causing an epidemic of childhood deaths. That without guns these kids simply wouldn’t be dying. A powerful message during emotional times. But if you remove the emotions and look at some facts you see something different (see 10 Leading Causes of Death, United States by the Centers for Disease Control).
These are deaths by unintentional injury. Looking at the leading causes of death in 2010 (the latest year of data) for children aged 5-14 you see 1,643 deaths. About half (809) of those are from motor vehicle accidents. Drowning came in next at 251 (15.3%). Then fire/burn at 135 (8.2%). Then suffocation at 79 (4.8%). You have to go all the way down to number 7 on the list to get to firearms. Where we can see they killed 37 children in 2010. Or 2.3% of the total number of kids aged 5-14 who died from an unintentional injury. Based on an approximate population of 41 million kids aged 5-14 the total number of kids killed by firearms comes to about 0.00009% of this total. According to the CDC’s numbers, guns aren’t killing a lot of kids. Motor vehicles are. But firearms are not. So taking away our guns will probably not change these numbers much. If at all. So the motive can’t be saving children’s lives. In fact, one can make the argument that there is a greater killer of children out there than anything on the above list. Abortion.
It’s hard to get numbers on abortions. But if you check various sources the number appears to be over a million a year. Wikipedia shows 1,313,000 abortions in 2000. Including 2,232 (about 0.17% of all abortions in 2000) that were partial-birth abortions. Whatever your politics on the abortion issue are one thing regarding partial-birth abortions is clear. These are human lives. For the ‘partial’ part of these abortions requires terminating the life of the fetus while the head is still inside of the mother. For if they terminated the life of the fetus outside of the mother it would be murder according to the law. And you can’t kill something that isn’t alive. In fact, an accidental wrongful death of a pregnant woman often results in two charges of manslaughter. One for the mother. And one for the unborn fetus. Assuming there was no spike in partial-birth abortions in 2000 one can assume that number is representative of all years. Which is far more deaths than by motor vehicle accident let alone from firearms. Yet President Obama wants gun control to save kids lives. When he could save even more by simply revising his stance on partial-birth abortion. Something he argued to keep when a state senator in Illinois.
Hitler received the Iron Cross for Bravery which carried a lot of Currency in a Militaristic Germany
Adolf Hitler could give a speech that fired up the masses. People loved him. The Nazis rose to power by winning elections. People elected them because they liked what the Nazis were saying. Things were not that good in Germany. The victorious Allies blamed World War I on them even though all nations jumped in enthusiastically. And then to add insult to injury the Allies made Germany pay reparations. Burdening Germany with the cost of World War I.
This was especially galling as Germany didn’t lose the war. The war ended in an armistice. Which is a mutual cessation of warfare. Not unconditional surrender. And yet here was Germany. Being treated as if they surrendered unconditionally. It made a lot of people feel angry. And betrayed. Enter Adolf Hitler. Who could tap into that anger and feelings of betrayal.
Hitler was a war veteran. He served as a dispatch runner in World War I. Wounded by artillery. And blinded temporarily by mustard gas. He even received the Iron Cross for bravery. Although it may have had more to do with spending so much time with senior officers at headquarters that issued those dispatches. But for a militaristic Germany an Iron Cross carried a lot of currency.
When the Reichstag burned down Hitler blamed the Marxists and turned Germany into a Police State
So Hitler was a brave war hero. Even though he didn’t actually use a weapon. Which was a good foundation to build on. For war heroes don’t stab people in the back after fighting bravely for them in war. Which is how many Germans felt about the politicians. Betrayed. Victims of the evil, conniving politicians. So the people felt victimized. And they were looking for someone to stand up for them. To right these wrongs.
Hitler wanted to be an artist. But when that didn’t work he turned to politics. And learned what a good speaker he was. He even studied how to become a better speaker. How to look. How to use his hands. How to inflect his voice. His speeches became very moving. Very dramatic. He made the defeated Germans feel better. For he told them that it wasn’t their fault. It was the politicians, and the Marxists, that stabbed Germany in the back. And he was the one man that could do something about it.
When the Reichstag burned down he blamed the Marxists. Who the Nazis shared power with in the Reichstag. But didn’t want to. It’s still debated who started the fire (the communists, the Nazis, others) but what it did was allow the newly appointed chancellor, Adolf Hitler, to urge President Hindenburg to suspend all civil liberties so they could hunt these communists down like the dogs they were. President Hindenburg did. And the government rounded up the communists. With them out of the government the Nazis no longer had to share power. And turned Germany into a police state. To keep that power.
The Equation Brutal Dictators use to stay in Power is Victimization + Demonization + Emotion = Power
Hitler was charismatic. He could give a powerful speech. And after the Reichstag fire he controlled the people. Using censorship and propaganda he made himself god-like. The war hero. The savior of the German people. To undo all the injustice of the Versailles Treaty. Standing up to the Allies. Punishing those who stabbed Germany in the back (first the Marxists and then the Jews). And restoring German pride. Because he got even with those who wronged the German people. The people loved him. He could do no wrong in their eyes. No matter how much wrong he did. Which he could hide from the people. Thanks to his censoring of the free press. And his state propaganda machine. Which is why people packed stadiums and the sides of roads. Showering him with their adoration.
Adolf Hitler was Germany. Germany was Adolf Hitler. His national socialism provided for the people. In return the people were subservient to the state. Germany was more important than the individual. And Adolf Hitler was more important than Germany. So anything he did was okay. For he could do no wrong. As there was nothing more important than Adolf Hitler. For Hitler was a cult of personality. Above the law. And god-like. Where people believed he was the only one that could save the nation. And would do anything for him. With the most devout joining the SS. Fighting with unbounded fanaticism in combat. And carrying out the Holocaust with ruthless efficiency. They pledged their loyalty to Adolf Hitler. Not Germany. And would do anything for him. Anything at all. Even torture and kill their fellow Germans. If that was what their Führer wanted.
This is how dictators were able to do some of the things they did. Because they were a cult of personality. Mao Zedong. Saddam Hussein. Benito Mussolini. Muammar Gaddafi. Kim Il-sung. Kim Jong-il. Kim Jong-un. These brutal dictators were/are all worshipped by their people. At least the people they weren’t/aren’t torturing or killing. For they had an equation they used to remain in power. Victimization + Demonization + Emotion = Power. Similar to the equation the Democrats use to win elections. Victimization + Demonization + Emotion = Democrat Votes. Where they victimize the people. Find someone to demonize for this victimization. Such as Marxists and Jews in Nazi Germany. Or Republicans in the United States. Then use state propaganda to disseminate their lies. Like Joseph Goebbels did in Nazi Germany. And like the mainstream media in the United States disseminates Democrat talking points. And then use fiery rhetoric to incite the people’s emotions. Like Hitler, Hussein, Mussolini, Gaddafi, Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, Kim Jong-un and every other cult of personality did. Like these ‘god-like’ people still do today.
Marx called for a Dictatorship of the Proletariat where the Workers controlled the Means of Production
Karl Marx did not like capitalism. Or middle class people that used money to make money. The bourgeoisie. Who exploit the working man. The proletariat. The bourgeoisie used their capital to exploit the labor of the working man (i.e., taking a risk and investing in land, factories, machinery, labor, etc.) to make money. While the working man slaved away at slave wages creating all the great things we have in the world. Of course, the proletariat could not do any of this unless others took risks and invested in land, factories, machinery, labor, etc.
This was just not fair to Karl Marx. Because the industrial bourgeoisie had all the power. And their exploitation of the proletariat was nothing more than a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. So Marx created a socio-economic philosophy to address this dictatorship. Marxism. And called for a social transformation. For working men everywhere to unite. And break the chains that bound them in the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. Calling for a dictatorship of the proletariat. For the workers to control the means of production. In a new system that replaced capitalism. Socialism. Until they could usher in the true ideal. Communism.
In capitalism the bourgeoisie get rich creating neat things people discover and want to buy. In communism there would be no bourgeoisie using the means of production to make a buck. Instead, wise and selfless people would determine what was best for the people. Instead of free markets allocating scarce resources economic planners would. And they’d do it better. Because they are selfless. Creating large surpluses that would go not into some rich capitalist’s bank account. But they would fairly distribute this surplus among the working class. So society as a whole would be better off. Sounds great. But if the market didn’t make the decisions of what to produce who did? As it turned out for Marxism that was a very difficult question to answer.
Leon Trotsky was a Like-Minded Marxist and the number two Communist behind Lenin
The Russian people were growing tired of World War I. And Tsar Nicholas. In fact they had it with the Russian Empire. Even before World War I. Although serfdom was abolished in 1861 the lives of peasants didn’t improve much. There was still famine. And the serfs had to pay a lot to their former landlords for their freedom. So there was revolutionary fervor in the air. And a few peasant uprisings. As well as a few revolutionaries. Such as Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. Who was a Marxist. His anti-Tsarist political activity got him arrested and exiled a few times. In fact, during World War I he was living in exile in Switzerland. Hoping that the Germans would weaken Tsarist Russia enough to kick off a socialist revolution in Russia.
When revolution did break out Lenin was anxious to return to Russia. But being in Switzerland posed a problem. It was surrounded by warring countries. Lucky for him, though, the Germans were anxious to close the eastern front of the war. And a little revolution in Russia could do just that. So they transported Lenin through Germany and helped him return to Russia. They travelled north. Took a ferry to Sweden. Then by train to Petrograd. Formally Saint Petersburg (Peter the Great’s new capital on the Baltic Sea). Which was later renamed Leningrad. And then later renamed Saint Petersburg. Where he would lead the Bolshevik Party. And the world-wide socialist revolution against capitalism.
Leon Trotsky was a like-minded Marxist. And an anti-militarist. He had a falling out with Lenin but eventually reunited. With Trotsky becoming the number two communist behind Lenin. Trotsky addressed a problem with Marxism for Russia. Socialism was to be the final step AFTER capitalism. Once there was a strong industrial proletariat. Russia didn’t have that. For it was one of the least advanced countries in the world. An agrarian nation barely out of the Middle Ages. So Russia had to industrialize WHILE the proletariat took over the means of production. Which brought up a big problem. How could a backward nation industrialize while having a revolution? How could they do this without other advanced capitalistic countries coming to the aid of the bourgeoisie? Which Trotsky answered with his Permanent Revolution. For the Russian socialist revolution to be successful there had to be socialist revolutions in other countries, too. Thinking more in terms of a worldwide revolution of industrialized states. And not just in Russia. Something another Marxist disagreed with. Joseph Stalin
Communist States have Guards on their Borders to prevent People from Escaping their Socialist Utopia
During these revolutionary times workers’ councils were appearing throughout the country. Soviets. Which helped stir up the revolutionary fervor. In 1917 the imperial government fell. The Bolsheviks killed the Tsar and his family. And Russia fell into civil war. Which the Bolsheviks won in 1922. And formed the Soviet Union. Or the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). That stretched from Eastern Europe to the Pacific Ocean. Under the rule of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. Until he died in 1924. Then Joseph Stalin took over after a brutal power struggle. Even exiled Leon Trotsky. And established totalitarian rule. Stalin created a planned economy. Rapid industrialization. And collectivization. As well as famines, forced labor, deportation and great purges of his political enemies. To strengthen his one-party rule. To protect the socialist revolution from a return of capitalism.
The Russian Revolution was the only successful socialist revolution in Europe. The dictatorship of the proletariat did not happen as Lenin and Trotsky had envisioned. So Stalin abandoned the idea of Permanent Revolution. And adopted Socialism in One Country instead. To strengthen the Soviet Union. And not support a world-wide socialist revolution against capitalism. In direct opposition of Trotsky. To aid in the USSR’s industrialization Stalin made a pact with the devil. Adolf Hitler. And entered an economic agreement that would allow Hitler to build and test his war machine on Soviet soil that he would use in World War II. Then came the Treaty of Non-aggression between Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. And the secret protocol. Where Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union agreed to conquer and divvy up the countries located between them.
Trotsky did not like what the Soviet Union became under Stalin. An oppressive dictatorship of Joseph Stalin. Not the dictatorship of the proletariat envisioned by Karl Marx. And he didn’t like that pact with a militarist Nazi Germany. He predicted that Stalin’s USSR would not last. Either suffering a political revolution like Tsar Nicholas suffered. Or it would collapse into a capitalist state. Stalin disagreed. And killed him and his family. Getting rid of the last of the old Bolsheviks. Leaving him to rule uncontested until his death in 1953. Exporting communism wherever he could. Where it killed more people than any other ideology. Until the great and brutal socialism experiment collapsed in 1991. For Trotsky was right. It could not survive when a better life was just across a border. Which is why all of the communist states have guards on their borders. To keep their people from escaping their socialist utopia.
President Obama’s Cairo Speech of Islamist Appeasement Emboldened our Enemies
Candidate Barack Obama said during the 2008 presidential campaign that he would talk to our enemies. Without preconditions. He would discontinue the gunboat diplomacy of George W. Bush. Instead he would open a dialogue with the people who wanted to kill us. Find out why they wanted to kill us. And then resolve those issues that caused our enemies to want to kill us. Which was the core of his foreign policy. Being nice to our enemies to get them to like us. And once they did they would stop killing us.
Some say this started with the Obama apology tour. With his message of appeasement in Cairo in June 2009. Where he told our militant Islamist foes, those people who have a tendency to kill Americans, we only want to live together in peace. And that there is a level of conservative Islamism that was acceptable to the United States. When the Arab Spring began in Iran (a sponsor of anti-American/Western terrorism) in June of 2009 (after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won reelection despite reported irregularities) President Obama did nothing to support the Iranian protestors. And the enemies of the United States took notice. The Cairo speech of appeasement. Not condemning the Iranian election results and telling Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that he had to go (as he would tell Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak). The message was clear. America’s enemies could do whatever they wanted. Even become a rogue nuclear power (see Iran: US and others ‘surrendered before the great Iranian nation’ in nuclear deal by Alexander Smith posted 1/14/2014 on NBC News).
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said world powers including the United States “surrendered before the great Iranian nation” in agreeing an interim nuclear deal with his country, state media reported Tuesday.
Iran reached the deal with the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — the U.S., Canada, Britain, China, and Russia– and non-member Germany…
Speaking to a crowd gathered in the oil-rich province of Khuzestan on Tuesday, Rouhani said: “Do you know what the Geneva agreement means? It means the big powers have surrendered before the great Iranian nation.”
Apparently appeasing our enemies only makes our enemies bolder. And stronger. Which is probably not a good thing. North Korea is a rogue nuclear state. But their need for food and energy make it unlikely that they will launch a nuclear weapon. They have so far used the threat of doing so just to get what they desperately needed. Food and energy. Militant Islamists, though, want to rid the world of anyone who is not a militant Islamist. Even if they have to die in the process. Which they don’t mind. Because for them this world is only the prelude for the far better afterworld. Whereas the regime running North Korea has no desire to die. They enjoy living in the here and now. And know that won’t continue if they launch a nuclear weapon.
Neville Chamberlain opened a Dialogue with a Lying Adolf Hitler who lied to Chamberlain
The Allies blamed Germany for World War I. And the Versailles Treaty made the peace following the war a difficult one for Germany. Blame for the war, war reparations, loss of territories, emasculation (severe limits on Germany’s military strength), etc. It did a number to German esteem. Especially when they didn’t technically lose World War I. The war ended in an armistice. Where the combatants agreed to a cease fire as they were all exhausted by war. Of course, America’s entry into the war would have most likely led to a German surrender. For they were not yet exhausted by years of war. And could extend the conflict indefinitely until Germany did surrender. But that didn’t happen. Which made for a lot of angry Germans when the Allies treated them as if they had surrendered unconditionally. Setting the stage for an Adolf Hitler to come to power. Which is what happened.
The war left the Germans isolated. Russia pulled out of World War I before its completion and devolved into revolution. Bringing the communists to power. Replacing Russia with the Soviet Union. These developments left them, too, isolated in the post-war world. And then these two isolated nations found each other. Signing the Treaty of Rapallo in 1922. Renouncing any territorial or financial claims between them from the war. And becoming trading partners. Among other things. Such as using Soviet soil to rebuild German armed forces in direct violation of the Versailles Treaty. Where they trained for armor warfare. Built an air force. And even developed chemical weapons. This new eastern friendship had another shared interest. Poland.
Germany and Russia lost portions of Poland following World War I. And they wanted them back. But Hitler tested the waters first. To see how the war-weary allies would react. He marched troops into the demilitarized Rhineland in violation of the Versailles Treaty. And the Allies did nothing. Hitler sent an ultimatum to the Austrian chancellor to hand over power to the Austrian NSDAP (i.e., Austrian Nazi Party) or he would invade Austria. The Austrian chancellor did. And Hitler’s Wehrmacht marched triumphantly into Austria the following day. And the Allies did nothing. Then Hitler turned his eyes to Czechoslovakia. And the Sudetenland. Which he wanted to annex into the Third Reich. And he was willing to do this with an armed invasion. Something that got the war-weary Allies’ attention. For the last thing they wanted in Europe was another war. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain met with Hitler. And opened a dialogue with him. Finding Hitler to be a reasonable man. And the Allies agreed to give Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland to Hitler. With Czechoslovakia having little say in the matter. But it was for the greater good. “Peace in our time.” And it was the last territorial acquisition he wanted. He promised. So Hitler got the Sudetenland. And within 6 months Hitler took the rest of Czechoslovakia. Without firing a single shot. Because the Allies were so eager to appease Hitler that they never considered that he was lying to them. Which he was.
The Treaty of Rapallo allowed the Nazis to build the War Machine they eventually Unleashed on the Soviet Union
With the southern border of Poland secured thanks to the Allies giving Czechoslovakia to Germany it was time to recover their lost territory in Poland. All they needed was a little help from their new best friend. The Soviet Union. And it came in the form of a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union. The Treaty of Non-aggression between Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics signed August 23, 1939. Promising that neither would go to war with the other. Or ally with a nation that does. As well as the secret agreement to invade and divide Poland. As well as dividing up Bessarabia, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, etc. Then, on September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland. Launching World War II. Something they couldn’t have done if it weren’t for their new best friend. The Soviet Union.
After Poland came Norway. Then France and the Low Countries. The British held the Nazis off in the Battle of Britain. Then came North Africa. Yugoslavia. And Greece. Then came Operation Barbarossa. Starting on June 22, 1941. Something Hitler thought about since writing about it in Mein Kampf back in 1925. Finding Lebensraum (i.e., living space) for the German people. In particular the Bread Basket of Europe. The Ukraine. Which if you know your history, and your geography, was part of the Soviet Union. Yes, that’s right. Hitler lied to Joseph Stalin to get what he wanted. Launching off points for the conquest of the Soviet Union. A land he viewed as filled with sub-humans he would kill off with famine after taking their food.
The Soviet people paid a dear price for their leader’s treachery. Enduring hell on earth on the Eastern Front. With some 20 million dead by the time it was over. It was these innocent Soviets who won World War II. Who wore down the Germans with their wholesale dying. At times 10 Soviets dying for every one German. None of which would have happened if Stalin had read Mein Kampf. Or if he didn’t make a pact with the Devil that led to World War II. The secret agreements in the Treaty of Rapallo. Letting the Nazis develop the war machine they eventually unleashed on the Soviet Union. Which just goes to show you that you need to understand who your enemies are. And once you do you cannot try to make nice with them. For they will turn on you once you’ve served your useful purpose. Just like Hitler turned on Stalin. As Iran will turn on the United States after they served their useful purpose in getting them their nuclear weapons. And when that time comes the cost of that war will be far greater than it would have been if it was fought before they had nuclear weapons. With scenes from that war looking more like Hiroshima and Nagasaki than the hell on earth of the Eastern Front
Nero used the Great Fire of Rome to rebuild Rome to his Liking and to Persecute Christians
Roman emperor Nero does not have the greatest of reputations. For instance, a popular story about him is that he fiddled while Rome burned. Of course he didn’t fiddle. For the fiddle didn’t exist yet. But the lyre did. And he could play the lyre. In fact, he even composed music for the lyre. But the historical record is a little sparse to say definitely what happened when Rome burned.
That said Nero was not all that dismayed that Rome burnt. Because he didn’t like the way the city looked. And he wanted to rebuild Rome into a glorious city befitting him. And the fire allowed him do just that. For to build the city Nero envisioned required that he first destroy the city that was there. And the fire conveniently did that for him.
But it did more. The year was 64 anno Domini. In the year of our Lord. Being that Jesus of Nazareth lived temporally until His thirties that puts the Great Fire of Rome about 30 years after His death. And during the rise of those pesky Christians that Nero really didn’t like. Who worshipped Jesus as God. And not him. Nero. Putting crazy thoughts into people’s heads. That Nero wasn’t God. So Nero blamed the Great Fire of Rome on the Christians. Allowing him to torture them. And execute them. Earning the moniker of the first persecutor of Christians. So Nero profited well from the Great Fire of Rome. He got his new city. And he suppressed the ascendancy of those pesky Christians.
Adolf Hitler used the Reichstag Fire to make the way Clear for the New Nazi Germany
After World War I Germany was reeling. Reparations were crippling her. There was hyperinflation. Germans were struggling for food and heat. Creating the perfect political climate for a guy like Adolf Hitler to rise in politics. After a failed attempt to seize power—the Beer Hall Putsch—he turned to legal channels to secure power. Winning elections. In time the Nazi Party rose in prominence. But it could not win a majority in the German Parliament. Until, that is, the Reichstag fire.
Following World War I Europe was being pulled between two political ideologies. Fascism. And communism. Both were brutal dictatorships. While both proclaimed to be for the people. Well, Adolf Hitler’s Nazis were fascists. Who were sharing power with the communists. But they didn’t want to share power with the communists. Which they didn’t have to do after the Reichstag fire.
Hitler blamed the communists for the fire. He persuaded President Hindenburg to pass an emergency decree. Suspending civil liberties. And then turned the power of the state against the Communist Party. Clearing the way for the rise of the Nazis to power. Historians still debate who set that fire today. But one thing it did was clear the last obstacle in the way of the Nazis. The communists. With the Communist Party outlawed the Nazis no longer had to share power with them. Allowing them to rise to a majority in Parliament. And from there it was but a short path to Hitler’s absolute power. Thanks to a fire that got rid of the old. And made way for the new.
President Obama is On the Record saying that he is a Proponent of Single-Payer Universal Health Care
The American left has longed wanted national health care. For it is the Holy Grail of socialist/communist states. As it touches everyone. And makes everyone dependent on the state. All brutal dictatorships have/had national health care. Cuba. North Korea. The Soviet Union. Nazi Germany. These states also were/are anti-capitalist. So anti-capitalism and national health care go hand-in-hand. That is, the only way to have national health care is to give up some capitalism.
Which is a problem for the proponents of national health care. For people like their capitalism. And the liberty and high standards of living it gives them. So proponents of national health care can’t be honest when they’re trying to take away people’s health insurance. So they lie (see ‘Keep Your Plan’ Vow False; Media Knew It by Investor’s Business Daily posted 10/29/2013 on Yahoo! Finance includedhere in its entirety).
NBC News on Monday claimed to have uncovered evidence that President Obama knew all along that his promise that “you can keep your health plan” under ObamaCare wasn’t true. The story came out just as millions across the country are getting cancellation notices from their insurance companies.
“Buried in ObamaCare regulations from July 2010,” NBC said, is an estimate that shows “the administration knew that more than 40% to 67% of those in the individual market would not be able to keep their plans, even if they liked them.
Although ObamaCare included a provision meant to grandfather health plans sold before 2010, regulators defined what “grandfathered” meant so narrowly that most plans wouldn’t qualify.
Yet Obama went on repeating this promise, saying, as he did in June 2012, that “if you’re one of the 250 million Americans who already (has) health insurance, you will keep your health insurance.
That the administration knew this wasn’t true is troubling.
But the mainstream press also knew — or should have known — that Obama’s “you can keep your plan” promise was phony. It just didn’t bother to report on it at the time.
As far back as early 2010, health reform experts, Republican lawmakers and conservative policy analysts had been citing the same 40% to 67% figure that NBC News claims to have unearthed: The Commonwealth Fund, a favorite source for health care reporters, pointed out in a June 22, 2010, blog post that the administration “estimated that between 40% and 67% of health plans will relinquish grandfathered status” by 2013, meaning that millions of plans would get canceled.
An October 2010 article in the widely read Health Affairs said that, in addition to those losses, “the Obama administration has projected that between 39% and 69% of employer group plans” and “up to 80%” of small business plans would be canceled.
On Sept. 22, 2010, Sen. Mike Enzi , R-Wyo., said forcing 80% of small firms to change plans “breaks the president’s promise” about keeping your health plan.
In May 2011, a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey found that 51% of employers said they would have to drop plans and buy new ones because of ObamaCare.
An Aug. 29, 2011, memo by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor noted that “by the administration’s own estimates, 40% to 67% of individual insurance plans” will be canceled.
In a December 2011 paper, the Galen Institute’s Grace-Marie Turner noted that “millions of people are losing the coverage they have now, and tens of millions more will surely follow.
(IBD also covered this extensively at the time.) In addition, the Congressional Budget Office had reported in March 2010 that ObamaCare could cause 4 million to lose their employer-provided health insurance. It later raised that to 7 million, and admitted the number could be 20 million.
And years ago, Republicans like Enzi and Cantor pushed ObamaCare changes that would have prevented the massive cancellations going on today.
But with a few rare exceptions, the mainstream press completely ignored evidence that millions would be forced to drop their current insurance.
Now news reports are rife with stories of angry families getting insurance cancellation notices, learning that ObamaCare-approved plans will cost far more, and wondering why they didn’t know this was coming.
On Monday, Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., introduced a bill aimed at preventing these cancellations. The one-page bill, “The Keep Your Health Plan Act,” states simply that any health plan sold this year to the individual can also be sold next year.
Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., has a similar bill in the Senate.
The question is whether Senate Democrats will block this bill — as they have almost every other GOP-sponsored ObamaCare bill — in the face of rising public anger about Obama’s misleading and now broken promise.
President Obama doesn’t like the existing health care system. And is on the record saying that he is a proponent of single-payer universal health care.
So to get what he wants he first has to destroy the old. Private health insurance. And then set up the new. Obamacare. His pathway to single-payer universal health care. Something the American people don’t want. So he lied to the American people. And created Obamacare to destroy the one obstacle in his way. The private health insurance industry. Then he can act against the will of the people. And get what HE wants. Power. Through legal means. Just like Hitler. Who was also a good liar. And, thankfully, that’s where the similarities end. Well, that. And destroying their countries. For awhile, at least.
Governments often turn to Printing Money to Pay for War
It takes money to wage war. A lot of it. War spending is always a country’s greatest expenditure. Because fighting wars is costly. And the longer they last the more costly they become. Pushing countries that are waging war to the brink of financial collapse. Opening the door for another means of waging war. Counterfeiting.
How do you wage war with counterfeiting? By pushing a country’s economy into a financial collapse. If you can’t defeat your enemy with bullets and bombs you destroy their ability to make bullets and bombs. And everything else. Including food. And you do this by devaluing a country’s currency by flooding the money supply with counterfeit bills. Increasing the money supply causes inflation by having more dollars available to buy the same amount of goods. Requiring more and more dollars to buy those same goods. Thus raising prices.
As people struggle with rising prices they buy less. Because they lose purchasing power. Businesses see their sales revenue fall. As people have less disposable income to buy their goods. With falling sales they lay off workers. All of this causes a dramatic fall in tax revenue. Just when they need more to pay the costs of waging war. As well as providing relief for those no longer able to afford food and housing because they lost their jobs. Which is why governments print money during wars. As it is the only choice they have to pay for the high costs of a nation at war.
By the End of the American Civil War about Half of all Money in Circulation was Counterfeit
One of the problems the British had during the American Revolutionary War was that it turned into a world war. The British were also fighting the French and the Spanish. Their entering the conflict stretched the British resources thin. So they turned to counterfeiting. The Americans were already suffering a terrible inflation as the Continental Congress had little choice but to turn to printing money to pay for the war. They printed so many continental dollars that people began to refuse to accept it in payment. Making the continental dollar more and more worthless. Hence the expression ‘not worth a continental’. The British tried to push the American economy into collapse by adding to that currency devaluation. It was so destructive to the American cause that General Washington hanged counterfeiters.
During the early years of the American Civil War the North was running through her gold reserves. So Congress passed the Legal Tender Act (2/24/1862). Authorizing the printing of paper money to pay for war. Just like they did during the Revolutionary War. A new national currency was a counterfeiter’s dream. Instead of different banks issuing different banknotes across the country there was now only one. Counterfeits were easy to pass as few could tell a real one from a fake one. And with the Confederate dollar worthless even the Confederates wanted these new dollars. To buy things the Confederate dollar no longer could. The new counterfeits were even easier to pass in the South as there was no official currency trading hands there. Counterfeiting was so bad (by the end of the Civil War about half of all the money in circulation was counterfeit) that the Lincoln administration created the Secret Service to combat it.
The Nazis tried to bomb Britain into submission during World War II. Or at least to weaken it enough for a cross-channel invasion. The only problem with their plan was that the British had the Supermarine Spitfire. One of the greatest fighter planes of the war. And some of the finest pilots ever to fly. Who had an able assist from the new radar. Allowing these few to defeat the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. And made the cross-channel invasion impossible. It’s these few Winston Churchill’s “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few” refer to.
Counterfeiting is a very Effective Way to Wage War while being Cheaper and Less Risky than Conventional War
The Nazis took a beating in the Battle of Britain. So Hitler turned his war machine eastward. And invaded the Soviet Union instead. But he did not give up on Britain. For Britain was a great thorn in Hitler’s side. They were in the Mediterranean and North Africa. And they were producing oil in Iran. They had the shipping lanes. As well as the United States as an ally. Who was feeding food and war material to Britain. And using that island nation to base their bombers out of. As well as building up an invasion force there that would one day open up a second front in the West. Enter Operation Bernhard.
Operation Bernhard was a Nazi plan to flood the British economy with counterfeit money. To destabilize the British economy. And push it into collapse. They set up operations in concentration camps. And were printing about 1 million counterfeit banknotes a month. The Nazis then laundered the money. And used it to buy the war material they needed. The counterfeits were so good that they were still turning up in Britain a decade after the war. Forcing the British to withdraw all notes (larger than £5) from circulation and replacing them with a more counterfeit-proof money.
The Nazis turned to the American dollar in 1945. They set up printing presses in February. But they cancelled their plans. The war ended later that year. Allowing the Americans to escape the economic damage the British suffered at the hands of the Nazi counterfeiting program. But the idea lives on. We see ‘superdollars’ (counterfeits so good that their quality is higher than the original) all over the world. The U.S. suspects the source of these counterfeits are criminal gangs in Iran, Russia, China or Syria. While suspecting the government of North Korea producing a share of these superdollars. We don’t know for certain who is creating this counterfeit money but there is a lot of it out there. Some may be doing it for financial gain. While others may be doing it to damage the United States economically. Whatever the reason the result is the same. Resulting in the scourge of paper money. Higher inflation. Currency devaluation. Higher prices. And less economic activity. Possibly even sending the economy into a deep recession. Everything an enemy of the United States wants to do to the United States. Making counterfeiting a very effective way to wage war while being cheaper and less risky than conventional war.
Once the Soviet People experienced Communism they discovered they did not like Communism
The Soviet people won World War II. For no matter how many Soviets the Nazis killed on the Eastern Front they just kept coming. The Nazis killed 10 Soviets for each Nazi the Soviets killed. But it wasn’t enough. They slowed down the Nazi war machine. Then the rains came. Then the Russian winter. Slowing them down at the gates of Moscow. And stopping them in Stalingrad. Halting the Nazi advance. And turning the tide in the war.
The Nazis were brutal to the Soviet people. Following the Wehrmacht into the Soviet Union was the Einsatzgruppen. Mobile killing squads. To do what the death camps did later. Hitler wanted the Russian land for food. And its resources. But he didn’t want the Soviet people. Except those he could use for forced-labor. That’s how cruel the Nazis were to the Soviets. Which wasn’t necessary to topple the Soviet regime. For the Soviet people would have embraced the invading Nazis as liberators.
Once the Soviet people had experienced communism following the Russian Revolution they discovered that they did not like communism. There were shortages of everything. And brutal state oppression. Which a communist state needs. For if they don’t oppress their people they may challenge the regime. Or try to escape. So it was Hitler’s brutality that allowed the Allies to defeat Nazi Germany. For it was only his brutality that made the Soviets rally around the Soviet state that they hated just as much at the time of the Nazi invasion.
The Russian Naval Facility in Tartus is the only Remaining Naval Facility outside of the Former Soviet Union
The Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, was a cruel man. When it comes to killing your own people he tops the list in the sheer numbers killed. He’s right there with another communist dictator. Mao Zedong of the People’s Republic of China. But when it comes to killing the largest percentage of your own people the communist Pol Pot of Cambodia tops that list. So communist states are cruel and serious offenders of human rights. With Joseph Stalin being the cruelest and the greatest offender of them all. The man was as evil as Adolf Hitler. But you know who admired Stalin? Vladimir Putin. The Russian president.
Vladimir Putin is former KGB. That’s the secret police that put the fear of God into the Soviet people. They did what the Gestapo did to Germans in Nazi Germany. All powerful and above the law they could do anything to the ordinary Soviet. And did. Those in power liked it that way. Vladimir Putin admired the Soviet Union. And thought its collapse was the greatest tragedy of the 20th century.
Following World War II the Soviet Union started adding countries to the Soviet sphere. Eastern Europe. North Korea. North Vietnam. Cuba. And countries in the Middle East. Including Egypt. And Syria. Where Russia still has a naval base. The Russian naval facility in Tartus. Established in 1971. And is the only remaining Russian naval facility outside of the former Soviet Union.
Since the Fall of the Soviet Union Vladimir Putin has wanted to make Russia a Superpower Again
Israel is an American ally. During the Cold War the Soviet Union used this to agitate the Arab states into the Soviet sphere. The Soviets fomented radical Islam in the Arab states. To extend their hatred of Jewish Israel to the Judeo-Christian United States. Ally and sponsor of Israel. Christian Crusaders. And the Soviets were successful. They had Egypt. And Syria. Who fought Israel in the Six Day War (1967). And again in the Yom Kippur War (1973). A hot war in the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States.
Then a dark period followed for the Soviet Union. Egypt swapped their alliance from the Soviet Union to the United States. And the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty. When Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat made peace with Israel. Breaking up the great anti-Israel alliance that it worked so hard to promote. A devastating 1-2 body blow for the Soviets. Allowing their Cold War adversary greater hegemony in the Middle East. Tipping the balance of power in the Cold War. Which the Americans went on to win.
This is history Vladimir Putin did not much care for. Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union this former KGB officer wanted one thing. To make Russia a superpower again. He’s helping the Iranians with their nuclear program. And he’s supporting Assad in Syria. Bringing these Middle East nations into the Russian sphere. Outside of the American sphere. This history puts the politics of the Russian offer to take Syria’s chemical weapons into a different light. For that offer comes with the caveat that there shall be no U.S. military action against Assad. In other words, we will punish the Assad regime for using chemical weapons by helping it. And will help the opposition in their fight against the Assad regime by strengthening its enemy. To return to the status quo. A Syria strongly allied to Russia and Iran. Growing Russian hegemony in the Middle East. And an America in decline on the world stage.
Before WWII there were many who Admired the Great Things Authoritative and Charismatic Dictators were Doing
The Nazi Party is one of the most documented rises of totalitarianism. A system of government where everything and everyone is subordinated to the state. Where the state comes first. And the people are expendable. Ruled by a single person. A charismatic leader. Who the people pledge their allegiance to. And follow obediently to the ends of the earth. We can learn a lot by studying what happened in Nazi Germany about the quest for absolute power. For though party ideology may differ the path to that party is eerily similar wherever, and whenever, you look.
Of course, some are infatuated by an all-powerful state. Not for the crimes against their people. But what an all-powerful state can do. Where enlightened individuals can do what’s best for the people without having to deal with a political opposition. Just read what one beloved world leader wrote about Adolf Hitler prior to the outbreak of hostilities that embroiled the world in World War II:
Other musings concern how great the autobahns were – ‘the best roads in the world’ – and how, having visited Hitler’s Bavarian holiday home in Berchtesgaden and the tea house built on top of the mountain for him.
He declared; ‘Who has visited these two places can easily imagine how Hitler will emerge from the hatred currently surrounding him to emerge in a few years as one of the most important personalities that ever lived.’
This was written just a few years before Hitler invaded Poland. Up until the war broke out there were many who admired the great things authoritative and charismatic leaders were doing. Mussolini made the trains run on time. And FDR was so smitten with Joseph Stalin and the great things he was doing in the Soviet Union that it broke his heart when the Soviets signed a non-aggression pact with the Nazis. Allowing the invasion of Poland. And starting World War II. While splitting up Poland between the Nazis and the communists. Basically removing Poland from the map.
The Left has used the Expanding Size of the Federal Government to Harass and Silence their Political Enemies
This is why Nazi Germany is so interesting as a study in politics. For the Nazis rose to power within the political process. They won elections. And then used their legitimate powers to expand their power. Often helped by the clever use of propaganda. Misinformation. And brutal criminal acts. Which becomes easier to do as your powers grow. And you place yourself above the law. And become a nation of a charismatic ruler. Instead of a nation of laws.
With the recent scandals of the Obama administration (Benghazi, the obstruction of free speech, the persecution of conservatives, etc.) some are making comparisons to Watergate. While some even go so far as to compare it to Nazi Germany. Of course, President Obama and the Democrats are NOT Nazis. In fact, they are diametrically opposed to much Nazi ideology. Just to give one example take immigration. The Nazis believed in a pure Germanic race and opposed immigration of non-Germans. While Democrats want to throw open the borders. So the left are not Nazis. But if you read the 25 points of the Nazi Party platform of 1920 you will see that the left employs many of the same tools to rise to power as the Nazis—and all totalitarian regimes—used in their rise to power. Here are some of the 25 points.
9. All citizens must have equal rights and obligations.
12. In consideration of the monstrous sacrifice in property and blood that each war demands of the people personal enrichment through a war must be designated as a crime against the people. Therefore we demand the total confiscation of all war profits.
13. We demand the nationalization of all (previous) associated industries (trusts).
15. We demand an expansion on a large scale of old age welfare.
16. We demand the creation of a healthy middle class and its conservation, immediate communalization of the great warehouses and their being leased at low cost to small firms, the utmost consideration of all small firms in contracts with the State, county or municipality.
18. We demand struggle without consideration against those whose activity is injurious to the general interest. Common national criminals, usurers, Schieber and so forth are to be punished with death, without consideration of confession or race.
20. The state is to be responsible for a fundamental reconstruction of our whole national education program, to enable every capable and industrious German to obtain higher education and subsequently introduction into leading positions. The plans of instruction of all educational institutions are to conform with the experiences of practical life. The comprehension of the concept of the State must be striven for by the school [Staatsbuergerkunde] as early as the beginning of understanding. We demand the education at the expense of the State of outstanding intellectually gifted children of poor parents without consideration of position or profession.
23. We demand legal opposition to known lies and their promulgation through the press. In order to enable the provision of a German press, we demand, that:
a. All writers and employees of the newspapers appearing in the German language be members of the race:
b. Non-German newspapers be required to have the express permission of the State to be published. They may not be printed in the German language:
c. Non-Germans are forbidden by law any financial interest in German publications, or any influence on them, and as punishment for violations the closing of such a publication as well as the immediate expulsion from the Reich of the non-German concerned. Publications which are counter to the general good are to be forbidden. We demand legal prosecution of artistic and literary forms which exert a destructive influence on our national life, and the closure of organizations opposing the above made demands.
25. For the execution of all of this we demand the formation of a strong central power in the Reich. Unlimited authority of the central parliament over the whole Reich and its organizations in general. The forming of state and profession chambers for the execution of the laws made by the Reich within the various states of the confederation. The leaders of the Party promise, if necessary by sacrificing their own lives, to support by the execution of the points set forth above without consideration.
Both the Nazis and the left call for an egalitarian society. For example, everyone should have access to health care. While everyone is obligated to pay their fair share (i.e., the health care mandate forcing people to buy health insurance). Both call war a crime against the people and want to confiscate war profits. Among other profits. The left wants to get rid of the profit incentive and capitalism while the Nazis wanted to just nationalize private sector industries. The Nazis wanted to get the elderly dependent on the state by expanding old age welfare. Just as the left does with Social Security and Medicare (and now Obamacare). The Nazis wanted to implement price controls to help the middle class. The left’s solution to the high cost of health care (in part) is price controls. Forcing doctors and hospitals to work for less. The Nazis wanted to severely punish those who are injurious to the state agenda. The left used the IRS and other agencies of the federal government to make life uncomfortable for those who actively oppose their agenda (case in point the recent scandals plaguing the Obama administration). The Nazis controlled education as “early as the beginning of understanding.” The left had the government take over the student loan program to get more kids into college where they can further indoctrinate them. The left controls public education. That gets out the vote to help Democrats win elections. And the left is always trying to create/expand state-run childcare. To start indoctrinating children as “early as the beginning of understanding.” The Nazis wanted to ban any free speech that did not help the general good. As the state determined what that general good was. The left marginalizes the one network (Fox) that doesn’t endorse the left’s agenda. They’ve tried to muzzle free speech on the one media outlet they did not dominate (talk radio) by trying to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine. And they’ve talked about extending that to the Internet to shut down any opposition there. The Nazis called for a strong central authority with unlimited powers to protect the general interest. The left has expanded the size of the federal government under the guise to protect the general interest. And the recent scandals show the use of that growing central authority to harass and silence their political enemies. Conservatives. Who are today’s scapegoat.
JFK was more Champion of the People than Seeker of Dictatorial Power unlike Today’s Democrat Party
The Nazi party did not do well until the Great Depression. When the masses were unemployed and suffering under the war reparations of the Versailles Treaty. The people were angry. Frustrated. And felt they were suffering for the crimes of others. Then along came Adolf Hitler. And the Nazi Party. They did not let this crisis go to waste. The Nazis identified a scapegoat for all of their woes. The Jews. With a great crisis and a scapegoat the Nazis started winning elections. In 1928 the Nazis had 12 seats in the Reichstag. By September of 1930, after the pain of the Great Depression was being felt, they had 107 seats. Making them the second largest party. At the same time the Hitler Youth junior branches started indoctrinating boys and girls as young as 10. By July 1932 the Nazis were the largest party in the Reichstag. The Nazis co-ruled the country as part of a coalition government. In 1933 the Reichstag burnt down. Another crisis too good to waste. The Nazis (who probably started that fire) blamed the Communist Party (KPD). The second largest party in the Reichstag. The Nazis got the KPD banned. Giving the Nazis majority rule. They then suspended basic civil rights. Because enemies of the people were everywhere. And the government needed to protect them. Making Germany a police state. The Civil Service law of 1933 began the removal of Jews from every office. The Nazis then abolished trade unions. Forcing everyone to join the German Labor Front. Then in March 1933 the government passed the Enabling Law. Transferring legislative power to Hitler’s cabinet. Creating Hitler’s dictatorship. As the future of Germany could no longer be left to the chaos of an elected body. It needed the strong will of a charismatic leader who knew what was best for the German people. And the German people followed his will obediently. Because there were enemies all around. And they needed someone unhindered by an elected body or law to protect them.
Liberal Democrats are NOT Nazis. They have more ideological difference than they share. But they do have one thing in common with the Nazis. Their quest for power. And in that quest for power they have used some of the same techniques the Nazis used. Because all power-hungry people use these techniques. They identify an enemy (Jews/conservatives). They champion the people. And then lie through their teeth. Using their growing powers to consolidate even more power. All the while the people enthusiastically support them. Supporting the oppression of their common enemy. Until that consolidated power begins to include them in their oppression. Where all but the most devout Nazis regretted their earlier support of the Nazi Party. As it was all but the most devout Nazis that suffered from the state’s oppression.
So who was that beloved world leader that wrote so admiringly of Adolf Hitler before the outbreak of World War II? He was an American. A Democrat. Who actually went on to fight in World War II. Against the Japanese. Who went on to become president of the United States. Fierce Cold War warrior. And, surprisingly, endorsed economic policies that Ronald Reagan would one day endorse. John Fitzgerald Kennedy (see How JFK secretly ADMIRED Hitler: Explosive book reveals former President’s praise for the Nazis as he travelled through Germany before Second World War posted 5/23/2013 on the Daily Mail). Who may have had some faults. But being a Nazi wasn’t one of them. JFK may have wanted to use the power of government to make America better. But he was an old school Democrat. Who was more champion of the people than seeker of dictatorial power. Unlike today. Where it appears the Democrats in power use the IRS and other agencies of the federal government to oppress their political enemies. Conservatives. Kind of the way the Nazis oppressed their political enemies in Germany. And like the communists oppressed their political enemies in East Germany. Where our fierce Cold War warrior spat in the face of that communist oppression by proclaiming, “Ich bin ein Berline.” I am a Berliner. But today it is the Democrats that are the oppressors. Not the ones fighting against oppression.
