Fundamental Truth

College Students and Hippies of Yesteryear have a Soft Spot for their Communist Heroes

The hippies in the Sixties saw a brotherhood of man.  They wanted to link arms and sing Kumbaya.  Live in their communes.  Get high.  Have unprotected sex with multiple partners who bathed infrequently.  While being one with nature.  And poop and pee in the great outdoors.  Like the animals.  Only with less grooming.  For they hated the Man.  And didn’t want anything to do with their parent’s generation.  They protested any figure of authority.  Protested the Vietnam War.  And protested against their government.  Speaking truth to power.  And yearned to bring the Marxist-Leninist revolution to America.

The hippies were rabid anti-capitalists.  Which is why they loved communism.  Where there were no possessions.  No religion.  Or greed or hunger.  Just imagine all the people sharing all the world.  Words from John Lennon’s song Imagine).  Former Beatle.  And one of the leaders of the counterrevolution.  Not to be confused with the other Lenin.  Vladimir Ilich Lenin.  Of Soviet Marxism-Leninism fame.  Or, rather, infamy.  One of many icons of the counterrevolution.  Along with Mao Zedong.  Ho Chi Minh.  Fidel Castro.  And, of course, Che Guevara.  Whose bearded and beret-wearing image adorns many a university dorm room wall and student t-shirt to this day.

College students today, just as the hippies of yesteryear, still have a soft spot for their communist heroes.  Thanks to many of these hippies of yesteryear having joined the establishment.  And are now teaching our kids in college the evils of capitalism and the goodness of government.  Despite their one-time fierce opposition to the Man.  Guess things change once you get money.  Like someone in the rock band The Who said when asked if he still hopes to die before he gets old (a line from My Generation-a song about youthful angry rebellion against their parent’s generation).  The reply was that being old wasn’t all that bad when you were rich.  Something the old hippies of the Sixties no doubt discovered.  And best of all they got rich by taking money from the capitalist pigs.  Their students’ rich parents.  Or the taxpayers who worked in that detested capitalist system.

Nations with the Marxist Brotherhood of Man with No Possessions have been the Worst Places to Live

It is ironic that without capitalism these communist-loving parasites could not be parasites.  For if no one was creating economic activity there would be no income to tax.  Or to pay for the one thing growing more expensive than health care.  College tuition.  Interestingly, there is no ‘Obamacare’ for our colleges and universities.  No.  They never label them greedy despite their being the greediest of them all.  But you know who they do label as greedy?  The taxpayers who oppose higher taxes to pay for the ever higher cost of higher education.  They’re the greedy ones.  Not the old hippies of the Sixties.  And their fellow anti-capitalists.

Another interesting thing about these anti-capitalists?  They yearn for one-party rule.  Which is why public education teaches our kids to distrust capitalism and to trust government.  And our colleges and universities teach our kids to be ashamed of their nation’s past.  And the importance of diversity.  Which is code for anything that isn’t American.  For America was founded by rich white slave-owners who stole the land from the Native Americans.  And America’s imperialist aggression is the only source of strife in the world today.  While ignoring the expanding communist revolution that was spreading out from the Soviet Union into the Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.  The one ideology that has killed more people than any other.  Through state oppression, wars and famine.

Yes, this brotherhood of man where there are no possessions have been in fact the worst places to live.  The Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Mao’s Peoples Republic of China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Cuba, etc.  These are all nations that had gulags or reeducation camps for political prisoners.  Those people who spoke—or thought—truth to power.  They all had police states where the people lived in fear of their government.  They suffered for the want of the most basic items (soap, toilet paper, etc.).  There was state censorship.  They persecuted anyone practicing any religion.  The people suffered from constant hunger.  And the occasional famine.  They killed anyone trying to escape their communist utopia.  Or sent them off to hard labor and torture.  If they escaped successfully then the state punished any family remaining behind.  To warn others what would happen if they escaped their communist utopia.

The Great Flaw of Socialism is being unable to Determine What is the Greater Good

Why did these communist states have police states and brutally oppress their people?  Because they had to.  When the communists built the Berlin Wall it wasn’t to keep people from West Berlin out of East Berlin.  It was to stop people escaping from East Berlin to West Berlin.  For the East Germans were suffering a terrific brain drain.  Capitalists believe in liberty.  The freedom to do what they want.  And to get paid for their services.  A highly skilled doctor expects a higher salary than a janitor.  And that just isn’t going to happen in a communist state.  You get what the state gives you.  No more.  Creating a heck of a free rider problem.  When your economic system works based on the Marxist premise from each according to ability to each according to need what you get is a lot of people showing little ability and a lot of need.  For the more ability you had the harder they forced you to work.  While the greater your need the more you got.  Such a system encourages people to do the minimum and not be extraordinary.  Which is why Sony, Samsung, Microsoft, Apple, The Beatles, etc., did not come from communist countries.

A communist state has a planned economy.  Instead of a free market economy.  Communist state planners manage the economy from top down.  Telling the raw material industry what materials to extract.  They tell what factories get these raw materials and what they are to build.  Etc.  Whereas in a free market economy the economy is driven bottom up by the consumers.  When consumers start buying a lot of one thing the price for that one thing rises.  Attracting other businesses into the market to meet that rising demand.  Who place orders with their wholesalers.  Who place orders with their manufacturers.  Who place orders with their industrial processors.  Who place orders with their raw material extractors.  Hundreds of thousands of decisions happen as this consumer demand travels up the stages of production in a free market economy.  Giving the people what they want.  And not what a state planner decides to give to the people.

This is why communist (and socialist) states are oppressive dictatorships.  Because state planners decide for the people.  Which must start with the supreme decision maker.  The Joseph Stalin, the Mao Zedong, the Ho Chi Minh, the Kim Jong Un, the Raul Castro, the Hugo Chávez, etc.  And these people don’t take polls or hold elections.  Well, at least elections that are legitimate.  Kim Jong Un continues the state policy of his predecessors.  No economic reform.  Money goes to the military first (especially for his nuclear toys) and whatever is left over may go to the people.  And anyone who disagrees with him or thinks wrong goes to the gulag.  Or is executed.  Like his uncle.  While the people suffer the want of the most basic things.  Like food.  North Korea to this day still suffers the occasional famine because of its economic policies.  But one problem the North Koreans don’t have?  Deciding where to go for lunch.

“Where do you want to eat?  I don’t know, where do you want to eat?”  This can go on until someone forceful makes the decision for the group.  Often making no one happy.  But it will end the endless “where do you want to eat?”  This is the great flaw of socialism.  Being unable to determine what is the greater good.  Because people rarely agree on what’s best for other people.  Just look at the recent budget agreement that made few people happy.  They were unhappy because they disagreed on what was the greater good.  People are different.  One size does not fit all.  You just can’t please all of the people all of the time.  So you have to force your will on the people.  The only mechanism that makes socialism work.  Force.  Because people can rarely agree on where to go to lunch let alone national policy.  And this is why all communist/socialist states end in brutal dictatorships.  Because only force can make people live in a world without choice.

Obamacare freezes Hiring and robs the Healthy and Young to pay for the Old and Sick

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 20th, 2013

Week in Review

President Obama has scolded Republicans over and over during the recent government shutdown.  Saying their actions have hurt the American economy.  Just at a time when it was gaining traction.  Even business leaders appear to agree with the president (see Obamacare Delaying Hiring, Debt Ceiling Debate And Shutdown Hurt The Economy: Beige Book by Agustino Fontevecchia posted 10/16/2013 on Forbes).

The Fed released its beige book for late September to early October on Wednesday, where business leaders blamed the government shutdown and debt ceiling debate for “increased uncertainty…”

Business leaders hate uncertainty.  Because you can’t plan your cash flow or your capital budget when you are uncertain about the future.  So the president may be right there.  But you know what else business leaders hate?  Obamacare.

…while employers remained reluctant to expand payrolls because of Obamacare.

Talk about your uncertainty.  Of course, President Obama doesn’t care about what this uncertainty does to the economy.  Or what Obamacare does to a part of his liberal base.  The youth vote (see Premiums for young healthy people will jump in 45 states under Obamacare by JOEL GEHRKE posted 10/19/2013 on the Washington Examiner).

Young people in 45 states will see their health insurance premiums increase under Obamacare because the law relies on the money they pay into the system to offset the cost of caring for older enrollees, according to a new study.

Virginia leads the pack, as individuals aged 27 and under will see their health insurance premiums jump by 252.5 percent — $416.55 — according to the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis.

Virginians under the age of 50 will see their premiums jump by an even greater percentage, rising from $228 to $991.03.

During the hippy movement the mantra was to never trust anyone over thirty.  Now those hippies are in the government.  Who are the architects of Obamacare.  And they’re taking money from those under 30 to pay for the health care of those over thirty.  Including those old hippies who are now racking up huge medical bills.  And don’t want to pay for their own costly health care.

Guess the hippies were right.  You should never trust anyone over 30.  Especially if they’re liberal Democrats.

Fundamental Truth

Our Universities praise Government Intervention, Vilify Capitalism and Denigrate US History

I recently saw some students on television from our most prestigious universities.  I won’t say who or where they were because it doesn’t matter.  For they all pretty much think the same.  There were liberal Democrats.  And conservative Republicans.  Young people.  Just into their twenties.  They spoke of economics, health care, free markets, investing in education, etc.  Kids too young to have experienced life.  In fact, most were still on their parent’s health insurance policies.  But they knew everything there was to know.  Particularly the liberal Democrats.

In college kids don’t know anything.  That’s why they are there.  So someone can tell them all those things they don’t know.  The problem is this.  The people telling them what to think have a liberal bias.  It’s no secret.  The teachers’ unions demand pay and benefit packages well beyond what most people can get in the private sector.  The government let’s them gouge taxpayers.  And in return they teach our kids in public schools to become Democrat voters.  Then it’s on to college.  Where the anti-capitalist hippies of the Sixties went on to become college professors.  Who talked about the fairness in the former Soviet Union and the former East Germany.  Where they put people before profits.  Admiring their love of people.  And hatred of profits.  While glossing over on their oppressive police states, thought crimes, prisons for political dissidents, torture and wholesale executions.

These radical hippies took over higher education.  And wrote the curriculum.  Which praised government intervention into the free market economy.  Vilified capitalism.  And denigrated the United State’s role in history.  Programming our children to hate whatever they hate.  And to love what they love.  Even when the facts get in the way.  Which they can fix with a little history revisionism.

The Arts did Very Well during the Eighty thanks to the Generosity of Gainfully Employed People

They call the Eighties the decade of greed.  While at the same time calling President Reagan’s economic policies a failure.  Supply-side economics.  Of the Austrian school.  Everyone did well.  Everyone made money.  Which is why they were so materialistic.  Because they had good-paying jobs that allowed them to be materialistic.  Allowing them to buy Sony Walkmans and CD players.  Which everyone had to have.  Even though no one knew what they were before they hit the stores.  Proving Say’s law.

Say’s law is a part of supply-side economics.  In general it states that supply creates its own demand.  No one was clamoring for Sony Walkmans or CD players in the Eighties.  But when these companies explained how great they were all of a sudden we were demanding them.  Supply created demand.  Just as PC supply created PC demand.  PCs were on the market long before they were in everyone’s home.  It was a tough sell in the beginning.  Because no one knew what they would use them for.  But they have them now.  Just like the Internet.  For a generation who had just mastered the recording functions on their VCRs (video cassette recorders—what we used to record TV programs on before DVRs) the Internet was a confusing thing.  And many said “thank you, but no thanks.”  Then people began creating content and putting it on the World Wide Web.  Today, people can’t live without their Internet connection.  Again, supply created demand.

This is Say’s law in action.  Supply creates demand.  You make it easier for people to be creative and bring things to market and they will.  Two ways to do this is to lower tax rates and reduce the regulatory climate.  So people are more willing to take risks.  Which they will do if there is sufficient reward for taking that risk.  Reagan did both during the Eighties.  The economy exploded.  Everybody was working.  The jobs were so good that we had money for material comforts.  And generous donations.  The arts did very well during the Eighties thanks to the generosity of gainfully employed people.

Obamacare will take Money from the Young and Healthy to pay for the Old and Sick

But this isn’t what they’re teaching in our universities.  They say that Reagan did cut taxes and created an economic boom.  But at what cost?  For he had record deficits.  Because of those tax cuts.  Which is where that history revisionism comes in.  Yes, he cut tax rates.  And when he did tax receipts (actual money flowing into the treasury) nearly doubled.  But our universities don’t teach that.  As demonstrated whenever a liberal talks about Reaganomics.  Instead they attack Reagan.  Capitalism.  And Republicans in general.  Because they all believe that limited government is best.  Which threatens a ruling class.

Our universities teach our kids the economics school that benefits the ruling class.  By supporting an ever expanding government.  Keynesian economics.  Which has a proven track record of failure whenever we’ve tried it.  John Maynard Keynes himself advised FDR during the Great Depression.  FDR didn’t think much of Keynes.  But he liked his idea about government spending during times of recession.  Even though it only delayed the correction—and prolonged the recession—by interfering with market forces trying to correct market prices.  Giving us the Great Depression.  Keynesian economics also gave us the stagflation of the Seventies.  Japan’s Lost Decade in the Nineties.  The American dot-com bubble and recession in the Nineties/early 2000s.  The 2008 subprime mortgage crisis.  And the ongoing European sovereign debt crisis.  All of these crises have their roots in Keynesian economics.  The school of economics of the ruling class.  But what do they teach in college?  Free market capitalism is bad.  And Keynesian economics is gospel.

These twenty somethings were anxious to show how smart they were.  How in a mere 2-4 years of college they had learned everything there was to learn.  And could regurgitate the party line.  Rolling their eyes at the idiots around them.  Laughing with all-knowing condescension.  Praising President Obama.  Obamacare.  Believing that it will provide more for less.  When nothing in the world works that way.  More costs more.  Yet they naïvely bleat what they were taught.  These kids who haven’t opened up a letter from their private health insurer advising them that their premiums will rise by 50%, 75%, 100%, or more, to comply with Obamacare.  Because it costs more to have more.  And people now have to pay more even if they don’t want more.  In particular young people.  For Obamacare is a transfer program.  Where Obamacare will take money from the young and healthy (like these college students once they graduate) to pay for the old and sick.

These kids, of course, blame the Republicans for the government shutdown.  And that their concern for our deficits is silly.  For they believe we don’t have a deficit problem.  Yet the smaller Reagan deficits were the end of the world as we knew it.  And they don’t have a problem with members of Congress and their staff getting subsidies to pay for their Obamacare.  As paying for their Cadillac health care plans with their six-figure salaries would have been too much of a burden for them.  And beneath them.  So we should pity them while record numbers of Americans have disappeared from the labor force.  Especially during the government shutdown.  Where the grooms of the stool may not be there for them.  Forcing the ruling class to wipe their own bottoms after they go potty.

This is what government and the political left is turning into.  A ruling class.  The very thing we fought our independence from.  And they are getting away with this because they control education.  And because they do they can revise history.  And change their failures to successes.  And change conservative successes to failures.  All you need are fresh young minds to corrupt.  And corrupt they do.  These kids talk like they know everything.  But they know nothing.  Which is sad.  For the children are our future.  God help us.

Fundamental Truth

Minimum-Wage Workers in Fast-Food and at Wal-Mart want a Living Wage for their Minimum-Wage Jobs

Wal-Mart workers are now demanding a living wage.  (Or people hired to protest the company the left loves to attack.)  Awhile back it was the fast-food workers demanding a doubling of the minimum wage.  So they could have a living wage.  Because they can’t raise their families with a minimum wage job.  So they want a pay rate beyond the pay rate of a minimum wage job.

So how much is earning $15/hour?  Well, if you work full-time and get the usual (2 weeks of vacation and holiday pay) that comes to 2080 (40 hours/week X 52 weeks/year) payroll hours a year.  At $15/hour that comes to $31,200 annually.  Which is the ‘living wage’ the fast-food workers want.  And no wonder.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (see May 2012 National Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates) here are some other jobs that pay around $31,200 annually with what they do as noted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Medical Assistants (Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician).  Medical Equipment Preparers (Prepare, sterilize, install, or clean laboratory or healthcare equipment. May perform routine laboratory tasks and operate or inspect equipment).  Ophthalmic Laboratory Technicians (Cut, grind, and polish eyeglasses, contact lenses, or other precision optical elements. Assemble and mount lenses into frames or process other optical elements. Includes precision lens polishers or grinders, centerer-edgers, and lens mounters).  Pesticide Handlers, Sprayers, and Applicators, Vegetation (Mix or apply pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides through sprays, dusts, vapors, soil incorporation, or chemical application on trees, shrubs, lawns, or botanical crops. Usually requires specific training and State or Federal certification).  Pharmacy Technicians (Prepare medications under the direction of a pharmacist. May measure, mix, count out, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications according to prescription orders).  Phlebotomists (Draw blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research. May explain the procedure to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions).  And Substitute Teachers (Teach students in a public or private school when the regular teacher is unavailable).

Some have worked Two or More Fast-Food/Retail Jobs so they could get the Education and Skills for a Higher-Paying Job

These are not entry-level jobs.  You just can’t walk in when you’re still a high school student, fill out an application and expect to get hired in any of these jobs.  They all take training/education beyond high school.  And require a license or certification.  Which requires an investment of time and money to get.  Usually including night school at the least.  And more often at least 2 years of college.  None of which is required for a minimum wage job.

So it’s no wonder people with minimum wage jobs want a pay rate that is beyond their skill-set.  Who wouldn’t?  Wouldn’t you want to get that higher pay without putting in that schooling?  That investment of time and money?  Things you probably can’t even do if you’re raising a family on a minimum wage job.  Or two.  But does that mean we should just pay these people more?  Would that be fair to the Medical Assistants, Medical Equipment Preparers, Ophthalmic Laboratory Technicians, Pesticide Handlers, Sprayers, and Applicators, Vegetation, Pharmacy Technicians, Phlebotomists and Substitute Teachers?

No.  It wouldn’t be fair to them.  For they would have made great sacrifices in their life to get those better paying jobs.  Because that is how you get a better-paying job.  In fact, some may have worked two or more fast-food/retail (such as Wal-Mart) jobs so they could get the education and skills these jobs required.  A lot of people working in fast-food/retail today may be doing the same thing.  For fast-food and retail offer two great things that allow these people to acquire these skills.  They will hire people without any skills (i.e., entry-level workers).  And fast-food and retail have many working schedules available.  Allowing single-parents to work when they have other arrangements for their children (school, daycare, parents, etc.).

The Hippies of the Sixties became Professors and then Moved on to Write the Curriculum

Instead of protesting fast-food and Wal-Mart we should be happy that at least someone in this horrible economy is actually hiring people when so few others are.  As President Obama’s economic policies have made such an anti-business environment.  The economy is so bad that just this past month another 516,000 have left the labor force (see Table A-1. Employment status of the civilian population by sex and age).  Which is the only reason why the unemployment rate fell.  Because of discouraged workers who couldn’t find a job just quit looking for a job.  But the government puts a positive spin on this by lauding the 169,000 new jobs the economy created.  Saying it’s further proof that President Obama’s economic policies are working.  Despite 516,000 who quit looking for jobs that are just not there.

If people are unhappy with their low-paying jobs in fast-food and retail they should be more upset about this economic destruction being waged by the Obama administration.  Which is the reason why fast-food and retail are the only businesses hiring today.  But there is no outrage.  Why?  Because most don’t understand economics.  And there is a reason why most people don’t.  It’s because of our education system.  Which the left has taken over.  Who write a curriculum that teaches students that capitalism and profits are unfair and bad while government and income redistribution so the rich pay their fair share is good.  And just.

A professor at Michigan State is the latest professor to illustrate the indoctrination of our young going on at our public schools and colleges.  Parents had to deal with their kids coming home from high school to hear how they were killing the polar bears because they drive cars.  But when these kids go to college this is the kind of stuff they encounter on a daily basis.  And he’s not the worst offender.  The worst offenders are those who don’t say outrageous things.  But who do it more subtly.  A smile, a smirk, a condescending remark—things that tell a young impressionable mind out from under their parents’ control for the first time that their parents were wrong.  Unless their parents were liberal.  They will believe almost anything these professors say.  Because they are very smart and must know far more than their parents.  And they treat these kids like adults.  And there is nothing that high school/college kids want more.  To be grown up.  It’s why they smoke cigarettes.  And have sex.  Because that’s what grownups do.

So is it any wonder that people have a poor understanding of economics?  Ever since the hippies of the Sixties couldn’t change the country from the outside they became professors to change it from the inside.  And then moved on to write the curriculum.  These people who hated capitalism.  And admired communism.  Which is why so many of them lived in communes in the Sixties.  These are the people writing the curriculum for our children.  Making sure our education system creates like-minded people.  To keep them voting Democrat until wisdom and experience opens their eyes.  And undoes the bad education they got.  This is why people think that it’s fair to pay minimum wage workers the same as Medical Assistants, Medical Equipment Preparers, Ophthalmic Laboratory Technicians, Pesticide Handlers, Sprayers, and Applicators, Vegetation, Pharmacy Technicians, Phlebotomists and Substitute Teachers.  Just to see how pervasive this indoctrination of our children is—and why people keep voting for those who keep trying the failed economic policies of the past—we should put a webcam in every classroom and lecture hall.  So parents—and the rest of America—can see the liberal dogma being fed to the young.  Making them think, and vote, the way they do.  Then we’ll know whether these are isolated incidences.  Or that it is in fact pervasive.  Explaining why so many people today have no understanding of economics.  That minimum-wage jobs are entry-level jobs.  And that if you want to raise a family you probably shouldn’t be voting Democrat.  Whose policies are making the only available jobs in this horrible economy those entry-level jobs.

Fear Peddling, the Uninformed and Politics

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 22nd, 2013

Politics 101

(Originally published February 28, 2013)

Che Guevara is the Left’s Favorite Marxist Hero

When you have nonsensical policies it can be difficult to advance them.  When you have policies that haven’t worked whenever they’ve been tried it can be difficult to advance them.  When you have policies that informed people reject it can be difficult to advance them.  When you have policies that will fundamentally change the country while taking the federal government closer to a monarchy it can be difficult to advance them.  Unless the masses are uninformed.  Or scared.

Fear.  It’s a good tool to advance bad policy.  Especially with an uninformed people.  When the antiestablishment hippies of the Sixties got tired of turning on, tuning in, dropping out and trying to overthrow the federal government through domestic terrorism (as groups like the Weather Underground tried) they changed tack.  These old hippies gave up their violent revolutionary ways.  Kept doing their drugs.  And started overthrowing the country from the inside.  By entering education.

If you’ve ever wondered how the nation started its turn left this is it.  These hippies began teaching our kids.  Filling their heads with revisionist history.  Attacking capitalism.  Lauding socialism.  And communism.  These people were, after all, the ones who started putting up posters of Che Guevara.  The guy who when in Cuba wanted the Soviets to nuke the United States.  A part of the Cuban Missile Crisis they don’t teach in our public schools.  For Che Guevara is the Left’s favorite Marxist hero.  Which is why today you see young and impressionable college students with posters of Che Guevara in their dorm rooms.  Or wearing t-shirts with his image.

Volcanic Eruptions Cool the Planet while burning Coal Warms the Planet

These old hippies hate capitalism.  So they teach our kids the evils of capitalism.  And the goodness of the federal government.  The very government they once tried to overthrow.  Now that federal government can only do good.  As long as liberal Democrats like them are in power.  And they use the federal government to go after their sworn enemy.  Capitalism.  Which is why our kids come home from school scared to death about global warming.  And grow up to be good liberals who hate capitalism.  Because capitalists cause global warming.  By putting profits before people.  And before the planet.

On February 15, 2013, a large meteoroid exploded in the sky over Russia.  Causing a lot of damage.  Shattered a lot of windows.  Set off a lot of car alarms.  And injured some 1200 people.  But it didn’t kill anyone.  Because it exploded some 20-30 miles above the ground.  Which was lucky for the people below.  For the energy in this 10 metric ton meteoroid was equivalent to a small nuclear bomb.  Had it landed intact in Moscow it may have destroyed that city.  Events like this are rare.  But a lot of meteoroids enter the earth’s atmosphere.  Most burn up.  But some pieces make it through to crash into the earth.

A large meteoroid impact may have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.  But so far human civilization has escaped.  But it’s just been dumb luck.  For there is a lot of space junk up there hurling its way all over the universe.  Making a large meteoroid strike sometime in the future a very real possibility.  Meteoroids that can take out cities like a nuclear bomb.  Yet they don’t teach our kids this in school.  The Left isn’t pressing for some space-based defense force that could land on a meteoroid to attach rockets to try and steer it away from the earth.  Or even to detonate a nuclear device to try and push it off course.  No.  We hear nothing about this danger.  Yet they scare our kids about man-made global warming.  Teach them to hate coal.  Even though burning coal puts the same stuff into the atmosphere as an erupting volcano.  But volcanic eruptions cool the planet.  While burning coal warms the planet.

Fear is Good, Fear is Right, Fear works

So the whole global warming debate appears to be more politics than science.  But our impressionable kids hear this stuff and accept it as fact.  While they ignore a real threat.  Meteoroids.  So why do they scare our kids about global warming but not about a meteoroid crashing into the planet?  Because peddling fear about meteoroids doesn’t offer any political capital.  Not like putting the fear of God into our kids that global warming is killing the planet.  And forcing the polar bears to swim miles from shore because the Arctic is melting.  This fear offers political capital they can use to further regulate businesses.  And to attack capitalism.  Because only government can help the polar bears by preventing businesses from destroying the planet with all of their man-made global warming.

To the Left fear is good.  Fear is right.  Fear works.  Which is why they always turn to it whenever they are trying to pass bad policies that an informed people reject.  As we see in the sequester debate.  A modest decrease in the rate by which they will increase spending.  The federal government will spend more this year than they did last year.  Even with the sequester cuts.  But they put the fear of God into the uninformed that these ‘cuts’ will unleash Armageddon.  We’ll have no safe food to eat or clean water to drink.  Cops, firefighters and teachers will lose their jobs en masse.  Criminals will run free as prosecutors won’t be able to afford to bring them to justice.  We’ll vacate our border because we won’t be able to pay our border patrol.  People will suffer great delays at our airports because they will lay-off TSA agents and air traffic controllers.  And we’ll have to release people from prison because we won’t be able to afford to incarcerate them anymore.

None of its true.  But it sure sounds scary.  Like it will be the end of the world.  And to stop this all we have to do is raise taxes.  Hmmm.  Raise taxes?  Or die in the fiery pits of Hell?  Which one do you think the uninformed will choose?  Our young adults graduating from high school.  Those getting a liberal college education.  Those who get their news from The Daily Show.  Who are more interested in sex and drugs.  Based on the 2012 election.  Where they warned women that if they wanted continued access to birth control and abortion they had better vote Democrat.  And, of course, Washington and Colorado decriminalized marijuana.  So what are these people going to believe?  Whatever the people who put the fear of God into them about man-made global warming want them to believe.  And they will.  Because fear is good.  Fear is right.  Fear works.

Fundamental Truth

Some want to Lower the Voting Age despite our Teens’ Penchant for Making Poor Decisions

Parents can’t tell their kids anything.  Because they know everything already.  Despite doing a lot of stupid stuff.  They smoke cigarettes.  Do drugs.  Binge drink.  Drink and drive.  Have unprotected sex.  And a whole lot of other things that can have lasting consequences.  Consequences such as cancer.  A drug addiction.  An arrest for driving under the influence.  An arrest for vehicular manslaughter.  Catching a venereal disease.  Becoming a single mother while still in high school.  Or becoming a single mother with a venereal disease.  While still in high school.

Teens and young adults have a history of making poor decisions.  Why?  Is it because they are stupid?  No.  It’s because they are young.  Inexperienced.  And grow up in an environment that tells them they are far wiser than they are.  As they grew up people constantly told them that they are smart.  They are wise.  And that we need to listen to what they say.  For they are our future.  Some even wanting to bring them into the political process earlier.  By lowering the voting age.  Which is an odd thing to do.  Considering their penchant for making poor decisions.

Of course kids are all for lowering the voting age.  For if they could vote earlier there would probably be more than 2 states that have decriminalized marijuana by now.  And they could lower the drinking age, too.  For let’s face it kids are going to binge drink no matter what we say.  Just as they are going to smoke marijuana and have sex.  So we might as well help them do these things.  And lowering the voting age will be a step towards making that happen.

The Founding Fathers wanted a Government of the People not a Ruling Elite in a Faraway Place telling them what’s Best for Them

So we know what kids want.  Less parenting.  And more fun.  They want the freedom to enjoy whatever they want to enjoy.  And believe they are enlightened like our Founding Fathers were when they wanted the freedom to do what they wanted to do.  Of course, the Founding Fathers’ Enlightenment was a lot different from that of the kids’ today.  The Founding Fathers were interested in science, economics and religious freedom.  They were familiar with the history of Greece and Rome.  Magna Carta.  The Protestant Reformation.  The English Civil War.  They were proud of their membership in the British Empire.  The most enlightened and free empire, or country, in the world.  Thanks to their representative government.  But when Parliament did not let them have any representation in that house while passing laws to govern them, well, they didn’t love the British Empire as much as they once did.

The Founding Fathers weren’t fans of mercantilism.  Then the dominant economic policy of the day.  European powers fought each other for colonies.  Their colonies shipped raw materials back to the mother country.  Who then used them to manufacture finished goods.  That they then sold to the world.  And to their colonies.  Keeping the net flow of gold and silver flowing to the mother country.  While exporting more finished goods than they imported.  With the state helping a few well-connected domestic businesses.  Keeping the state coffers flush with money.  While the people paid higher prices than they normally would have paid.  Thanks to those government policies favoring the well-connected businesses.  Basically like what China is doing today.  Maintaining a strong export economy with cheap labor.  That doesn’t benefit the Chinese masses all that much.  Creating basically two Chinas.  The rich in the cities.  And the poor and impoverished everywhere else.

The Founding Fathers wanted liberty.  Political liberty.  And economic liberty.  Laissez-faire capitalism.  Where the people taking the greatest risk profited the most.  Not the state.  They wanted a limited federal government.  Just large enough to protect the nation.  To treat with other nations.  Those things best suited for the federal government.  While the vast majority of power belonged to the states.  Closer to the people.  And not in some distant land.  They wanted a government of the people.  Not a ruling elite in a faraway place telling them what’s best for them.  That’s why they fought for their independence from a distant power in the first place.  The British Empire.  And they sure didn’t want to trade one distant power oppressing them for another.  They didn’t want money corrupting the federal government.  They wanted the seat of financial power and the seat of government power separated.  For the greatest abuses of power came when wealth joined power in the Old World capitals.  London.  Paris.  Madrid.  Thomas Jefferson wanted the federal capital as far from the bankers and merchants in New York as possible.  Which is why they placed the new federal capital in a swamp on the Potomac River.

Sadly, those who Know the Least often determine who Wins Elections

Those who have studied history understand how the United States came to be.  And what made it the world’s number one economic power.  Laissez-faire capitalism.  Free trade.  Sound money.  In particular the gold standard.  They saw history prove Say’s Law.  Supply creates its own demand.  No one demanded personal computers or the Internet.  But when those who brought these to the market place showed how wonderful they were demand soon followed.  They saw history prove David Ricardo’s comparative advantage.  How free trade lets nations produce what they do most efficiently and trade for what they don’t.  Thus increasing the economies of all nations trading freely.

People who know history understand that the prevalent economic policy today, Keynesian economics, is a failed policy.  For Keynesian economic policies are more like mercantilism than free market capitalism.  Calling for more government intervention into the market.  Inflationary monetary policy (i.e., printing money).  As well as tax and spend fiscal policies so the government can redistribute wealth.  So the government can choose winners and losers.  Not the free market.  Policies that all go against what made America the world’s number one economic power.  The Seventies, a time when the Keynesians got everything they wanted when President Nixon decoupled the dollar from gold, saw double-digit inflation, high unemployment and a stagnant economy.  Everything the Keynesians tried failed to improve the economy.  In fact, their policies only made the economy worse.  And the only thing that pulled us out of the stagflation and misery of the Seventies was Ronald Reagan.  Who embraced the classical economic policies that made America the number one economic power in the world.  Laissez-faire capitalism.  Say’s Law.  David Ricardo’s comparative advantage.  Sound monetary policy (i.e., noninflationary).  The policies we call Reaganomics.

People who study history know this.  But teens and young adults?  Those more interested in drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana and having sex?  They haven’t a clue about economics or their history.  Yet they often determine elections.  Sad but true.  And it’s just not teens and young adults who don’t understand economics or know their history.  Thanks to the hippies of the Sixties moving into education most people coming out of our public schools don’t.  For the hippies of the Sixties changed the curriculum.  To help them in their quest to destroy capitalism.   By dumbing down the curriculum.  So it’s easier for Keynesians to keep passing the failed policies of the past.  To help them keep expanding the size of government.  To turn this nation back to what the Founding Fathers fought to get away from.  The mercantilism of the Old World.  Of present day China.  Where the few in power have all the power.  And all the wealth.  All because people think they know more than they know.  And vote as if they know everything they need to know.  But there’s more to know than most people know.  And, sadly, those who know the least often determine who wins elections.

Fear Peddling, the Uninformed and Politics

Posted by PITHOCRATES - February 28th, 2013

Politics 101

Fear works.

JFK, Tax Cuts, Vietnam, LBJ, Great Society, Hippies, Race Riots, Keynesian Spending, Nixon, Carter and Ronald Reagan

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 21st, 2012

History 101

Ronald Reagan would follow the Kennedy Example of Cutting Taxes to Grow the Economy

In 1961 West German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard gave John F. Kennedy (JFK) some good advice.  During JFK’s visit he told him not to make the same mistake the British had.  He told Kennedy NOT to follow their policy of high taxation.  Because it killed economic activity.  And economic growth.  England was suffering from her bad tax policy.  He urged the American president not to make the same mistake.

JFK heeded Erhard’s advice.  And cut tax rates.  This did not please liberals in his Democrat Party.  Who were all Keynesians.  And believed in large government interventions into the private sector.  Funded by large government expenditures.  Which in the Keynesian world you got in one of three ways.  Tax, borrow or print money.  You did not cut tax rates.  Which was blasphemous in Keynesian doctrine.  You never, ever, cut tax rates.  But Kennedy did.  Arguing that “an economy hampered by restrictive tax rates will never produce enough revenue to balance the budget—just as it will never produce enough jobs or enough profits.”

A message Ronald Reagan would give time and again some 20 years later.  And would follow the Kennedy example of cutting taxes to grow the economy.  Generating more tax revenue without having to cut spending.  The result of JFK’s ‘trickle-down’ economics were impressive.  He cut the top marginal tax rate from 91% to 70%.  And cut the 20% rate to 14% at the other end of the scale.  What did people do with these tax savings?  They saved.  And invested.  Savings rose from an annual growth rate of 2% to 9%.  Business investment from 2% to 8%.  New jobs grew at a rate of 100%.  And unemployment fell by one third.  With GDP rising some 40% in two years.  And despite cutting tax rates tax revenue rose.  The booming economy generating more tax revenue even at the lower rates.  Even more than the Keynesians said Kennedy was going to cost the government with his tax cuts.

The Social Upheavals of the Sixties, the Race Riots and his Unpopular Vietnam War all took their Toll on LBJ

Liberals love JFK.  But for none of these reasons.  They prefer to wax poetically about his fight to end economic and racial injustice.  Which were in reality low on his priority list.  Addressing civil rights only after trouble was escalating in the south.  But that’s the Left’s cherished memory of him.  And of Camelot.  The American royal family.  They don’t talk about JFK’s trickle-down economics.  His Bay of Pigs fiasco (the plan to oust Fidel Castro from Cuba that he withdrew support from after it met difficulty on the beaches).  His Cuban missile crisis (near nuclear war with the Soviet Union) which his indecision at the Bay of Pigs may have invited.   Or his war in Vietnam.  No.  They stay silent on the best part of his presidency.  As well as the worst parts.  And focus instead on the fairy tale that was Camelot.  Ignoring completely his excellent economic policies and the strong economy they gave us.  And all that tax revenue that poured into the treasury.  Yes, they may have liked having that money.  But they didn’t have to like how it got there.

Following JFK’s assassination Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) ascended to the presidency.  An old school politician that knew how to make deals to advance legislation.  And boy did he.  He declared unconditional war on poverty.  And unleashed the Great Society to spend America out of poverty.  Keynesian to the core.  Pure demand-side economics.  Give poor people money which they will use to buy consumer goods.  That Keynesian consumption that was so crucial to a healthy economy.  So Johnson made good use of all that tax revenue JFK created with his tax cuts.  And LBJ’s Great Society consumed enormous amounts of that tax revenue.  As did JFK’s Vietnam War.  Now LBJ’s war.  Which LBJ escalated.  Government expenditures exploded during the Johnson administration.  And the spending obligations he put into place were only going to escalate future expenditures.  Oh, and we were also trying to land a man on the moon during this time.  All during a time when the world was changing.  When a bunch of filthy hippies began to protest anything that didn’t somehow gratify them (their rallying cry was sex, drugs and rock & roll).  And racial tensions simmered to the boiling point in our crowded cities.

The social upheavals of the Sixties.  The race riots.  The unpopular war on our living room televisions.  They all took their toll on LBJ.  The race riots especially hurt him as he had spent so much money on ending economic and racial injustice.  On a televised address he told the nation that he was through being the president.  He wasn’t going to run for another term.  And he wouldn’t accept a nomination for a second term.  He basically thanked an ungrateful nation.  And planned for his retirement.  Leaving a fiscal mess for the next president.  As well as a mess in Vietnam.  And the job for cleaning up these messes fell to Richard Milhous Nixon.

When Nixon entered the Presidency all those Spending Obligations of the Great Society were Coming Due

Nixon had a lot of liberal tendencies.  He was actually a member of the NAACP since 1950.  Long before JFK or LBJ talked of civil rights.  He believed in New Deal economics.  Of the good government could do.  He was also an environmentalist.  Giving us the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  And giving us emissions standards for our cars.  He gave us the Occupational and Safety Health Administration (OSHA).  And a flurry of other regulations.  Not what you would expect from a Republican these days.  Of course, few probably know this.  But they probably do know about Watergate.  At least the word ‘Watergate’.  Which was pretty tame by today’s standards.  Spying on the political opposition.  Then lying about it.

When Nixon entered the presidency all those spending obligations of the Great Society were coming due.  The cost of LBJ’s Great Society really hit the Nixon administration hard.  Enormous amounts of money were flowing out to poor people (so they could spend it and buy consumer goods).  To the war in Vietnam.  To the Cold War.  To the space program.  To the enlarged federal government.  Government spending was going off the chart.  But it wasn’t having the affect on the economy the Keynesians said it would.  They were taxing, borrowing and printing money like good little Keynesians.  But they were devaluing the dollar in the process.  And igniting inflation.  Worse, the U.S. dollar was the reserve currency of the world.  Foreign nations pegged their currency to the U.S. dollar.  The U.S. pegged the dollar to gold.  As the Americans devalued the dollar, though, the foreign countries traded their dollars for gold.  Gold began to fly out of the country.  So Nixon did what any responsible Keynesian would do.  Instead of playing by the rules of the game he changed the rules.  And decoupled the dollar from gold.  The Nixon Shock.  Ushering in the era of unfettered Keynesian economics.  Deficit spending.  Growing debt.  High inflation.  High unemployment.  Stagflation.  And malaise.

Jimmy Carter would see the worse of LBJ’s Great Society.  As it left his economy in a mess.  Despite all of that government spending.  And Carter suffered because he, too, was a Keynesian.  He believed in that GDP formula where GDP equaled the sum of consumption, investment, government expenditures and net exports (exports – Imports).  And the formula clearly states that the way to increase GDP (and increase the number of jobs) was to increase government spending to give money to people so they could buy consumer goods (increasing government spending and consumption in the formula).  It was simple arithmetic.  But the formula left out about half of all economic activity.  The intermediate business spending that takes place before any consumer goods enter our stores.  Think of things consumers don’t buy.  Like railroad track, blast furnaces, construction front-end loaders, etc.  Economic activity that JFK encouraged with his tax cuts.  As Ronald Reagan did so, too, some 20 years later.  Which is why the JFK and the Reagan economies were far better than any Keynesian administration.

Even after more than a decade of unfettered Keynesian spending consumption was only 34% of all economic activity in 1982.  Even though official GDP figures reported it at 65%.  Why the discrepancy?  Intermediate business spending.  The stages of production before consumer goods.  Coming in at 54% of real economic activity in 1982.  Which is why the tax-cut policies of JFK and Ronald Reagan worked.  And the spending policies of JBJ, Nixon and Carter didn’t.  Trickle-down works.  Because it creates jobs.  And those lower tax rates generate higher tax revenues because more people are working and paying taxes.  All things a Keynesian wants.  But they will reject them because they resulted from the ‘wrong’ policies.  Because Keynesians want to tax, borrow and print.  Regardless of their effect on the economy.

Protesters on Wall Street haven’t a Clue of what they’re Protesting About

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 1st, 2011

Why are they Protesting?  Because Protesting is Fun.

They’ve gathered on Wall Street.  And they will be heard.  That is, if they had anything to say (see Occupy Wall Street protesters driven by varying goals by Tina Susman posted 9/29/2011 on the Los Angeles Times).

“At a certain point, there’s a valid criticism in people asking, ‘What are you doing here?'”

What are they doing there?  I think that’s pretty clear.  They’re protesting.  Why?  Because protesting is fun.  That’s why.

They may not know why they’re there.  Or understand how the free market economy works.  Have the foggiest idea of what capitalism really is.  All they know is that they had some Leftist high school teachers and/or some Leftist college professors who told them how much fun protesting was.  How much they enjoyed it all those years ago.  When they were dirty, filthy, stinking hippies.  Enjoying the college ‘education’ that Daddy paid for with his capitalistic career.  And how much they hated their fathers.  For being capitalists.  Which allowed their parents to give these spoiled little brats whatever they wanted.

Funny how some things never change.

The Man Sure gets Around; of course he was a Much Younger Man during the Vietnam era Protests.

But surely they must have a reason for being there?  Other than sticking it to the man (see Wall Street protest’s success not easily measured by the Associated Press posted 10/1/2011 on TRIBLIVE).

It all has the feel of a classic street protest with one exception: It’s unclear exactly what the demonstrators want…

“It’s time for us to come together to realize we are the masses, and we can make things happen.”

But he couldn’t say what, exactly, he wanted to happen. Handmade signs carried by some of the demonstrators — “Less is More” and “Capitalism is evil” — hardly make it clearer…

… the group’s lack of specificity serves a purpose because it invites outrage over a full spectrum of societal grievances. Indeed, some demonstrators say they are against Wall Street greed, others say they are protesting global warming and still others say they are protesting “the man.”

Yes.  The man.  I remember first hearing about ‘the man’ during the Vietnam era protests.  The man sure gets around.  Of course he was a much younger man in those days.  But just as oppressive.  He had a job.  He paid taxes.  Saved for retirement.  And saved for the college education for the next generation of protestors.  That vicious, selfish bastard.

The Protestors have no Leader or Message but have the Support of Teachers and Transport Workers

But these protestors are not alone.  Other anti-capitalists have come out to support them (see Wall Street protesters set to march on police by Ray Sanchez posted 9/30/2011 on Reuters).

… a unionized subway worker, said, “Last year we had 900 of our members laid off … These are our issues too: Wall Street, the banks, layoffs, the struggle that these young people are spearheading is our struggle too.”

Among those pledging solidarity were the United Federation of Teachers and the Transport Workers Union Local 100, which has 38,000 members. The unions could provide important organizational and financial support for the largely leaderless movement.

It was the high unemployment that cut the tax base of the city that required them to lay off some of their employees.  Because they couldn’t pay them and those generous pensions and health care benefits for their retirees.  And that didn’t have anything to do with the Wall Street banks.

It is interesting that the teachers and the transport workers are supporting a movement that has no message.  At least when the unions protest you know what they want.  Money.  And benefits.  But these protestors have no leader.  And no message.  But the teachers and the transport workers will be right there with them to help them win what they want.  More fun protesting.  I guess.

Corruption is Initiated by Government because they have the Power, they Write the Laws

Perhaps we should listen to the protestors themselves.  Let them tell us why they’re protesting.  Bill O’Reilly sent Jesse Watters to Wall Street.  To find out.  And here is what he learned.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Crl31Xgc3_w

Well, that clarifies everything.  These people are demonstrating how poor our educational system is.

What they’re complaining about is not capitalism.  It’s crony capitalism.  Crony capitalism is when politicians sell themselves to the highest bidder.  They say if you give me lots of money I will write laws that favor you.  This is the corruption.  And government initiates it.  Because they have the power.  They write the laws.  And set the rules of the game.  And if you want to play you have to pay.

Not all corporations do.  Microsoft didn’t.  Until they were called to Congress in a huge antitrust case.  Because they were giving consumers something free.  The Internet browser Internet Explorer.  Microsoft has since learned their lesson.  And now lobby accordingly.

Democrats need the Youth Vote because the Young stay neither Young nor Ignorant Forever

There are some older people in these protests.  But the vast majority are college age kids.  Many of who will grow up and raise families.  Have a career.  And will think about other pressing issues of the day other than legalizing pot.

Yes.  These kids today?  A lot of them will be ‘the man’ tomorrow.  And some punk kids will demonize them in a similar protest some 10-20 years in the future.

This is why the Democrats work so hard on getting the youth vote.  Because the young stay neither young nor ignorant forever.

FUNDAMENTAL TRUTH #84: “The bigger and more complex government gets the more unintended the consequences.” -Old Pithy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - September 20th, 2011

Filthy, Stinking Hippies never Liked Income Disparity.  Or Real Work.

Say you’re a server at a nice restaurant.  And you’re really good.  People ask to sit in your section.  For your prompt and courteous service.  And they show their appreciation.  With big tips.  And frequent trips to the restaurant.  Good food.  And great service.  It’s what makes a restaurant successful.

Now let’s say the restaurant owners retire and turn over the business to their children.  And let’s say they’re liberal Democrats.  Children of the Sixties.  Hippies.  Filthy, stinking hippies.  And still are.  Though they may bathe more these days.  Anyway, they take over the exploitation of the working class in this bourgeois restaurant.  (They see all business in these terms.)  And they’re going to make some changes.

They never liked the income disparity they saw between the servers.  (Or real work for that matter.)  And they don’t like you.  Because you’re getting more in tips than the other servers.  And that just isn’t fair.  You’re just lucky to get better tables.  As if you won some lottery in life.  It’s only blind, dumb luck that makes you the high earner in the restaurant.  So they’re going to level the playing field.  Make it fair for everyone.  Not just for the rich.  You.  But for everyone.  From now on all tips go into a jar.  And at the end of the day they will divide those tips evenly between all servers.  Everything fair.  And everyone happy.

People don’t Approve of Slavery and Prefer to Keep the Fruits of Their Labor

Or so they would believe.  Because you’re not going to be happy, are you?  I mean, you know why you made more in tips.  You provided exceptional service.  And your reward for your hard work?  A punitive tax.  They’re going to share part of your tips with the less exceptional servers.  So what will you do?

I’m guessing that you’re not going to say, “Vive la revolución.”  And work even harder.  Instead I’m betting that you will be looking for a new job.  At a restaurant that rewards hard work.  And if there are no other food service jobs available?  Because liberal Democrats are in power?  And they’ve killed the economy?  Well, then, you just won’t work as hard.  Because you don’t approve of slavery.  Having the fruits of your labors given to others.

So the new owners, the filthy, stinking hippies, will lose their best server.  And soon will notice a steady decline in the quality of service.  For their servers quickly learn that working harder doesn’t mean any more pay.  So they don’t.  Work harder.  Food sits in the kitchen longer.  By the time they serve it to the customers it’s lukewarm.  They don’t refill drinks.  Customers begin to complain.  Even about the quality of the lukewarm food.  The executive chef quits.  Business drops off.  The business goes into debt.  Losing some $10,000 each month.  And things get so bad under the new owners that not even Robert Irvine could save this restaurant.

The new owners thought their way was going to make a better work environment for their employees.  But the only workers who liked the new policies and stayed were their worst employees.  All the good ones quit.  And those who remained lost their jobs eventually as the business finally went under.  So everyone in the end lost.  Because these hippies thought they knew what was best for everyone.

Accidents Sometimes Happen when Men Control Complex Machines

So bad ideology has unintended consequences.  But complex systems to simplify complex things also have unintended consequences.

The modern jetliner is a complex machine.  They can literally take off, fly and land themselves.  But don’t.  Pilots still take off.  And land.  But the other 99% of the time these aircraft fly themselves.  Pilots input data into the flight computers.  And the computers fly the aircraft.

So pilots don’t fly as much as they used to.  They log a lot of hours in the cockpit.  But they’re not really flying.  They’re operating computers.  Pushing buttons.  Turning dials.  And communicating with air traffic controllers.  They’re not ‘connected’ to the aircraft like in the old days.  Fly-by-wire technology insulates the pilot from the flight controls.  The days of stick and rudder are gone.  When a pilot was one with the aircraft.  Through constant feedback via the senses.  Flying by the seat of the pants.  When a hand on the steering column told a pilot how the plane was flying.  Even while on autopilot.  While having a conversation with a flight attendant standing in the cockpit door.

Back then you needed far more piloting skills than you do today.  Because there were no flight computers.  Like they have today.  That’s why a lot of pilots came out of the military.  Because the military pushed pilots in their training.  Taught them to fly through anything that can happen while flying.  Including recovering from a stall.  Something that just doesn’t typically happen in a modern jetliner these days.

Pilot error has accounted for the majority of accidents.  So removing the pilot from the ‘flying part’ of flying an airplane made sense.  And it would make aviation safer.  And it has.  This is not to criticize pilots.  It just shows that accidents sometimes happen when men control complex machines.  So reducing the amount of time the pilot is in control of the aircraft makes them safer.  That is, as long as the computers have good data.

The Safer You Make Flying by Removing the Pilot from the Flying the less Skilled Pilots Become

And that’s a problem.  Sometimes the computers don’t have good data.  For various reasons.  Such as iced up airspeed sensing pitot probes.  Which has happened a few times.  Giving false airspeed data.  Or sometimes conflicting airspeed data.  There’s more than one probe.  And different flight computers get their airspeed from different probes.  One could show a dangerous high airspeed.  Another can show the actual airspeed.  Giving a pilot a bit of a problem.  Which is compounded if that pilot spent more time inputting data to a computer than flying.  Because when computers get bad data they often disengage.  And the modern pilot will spend most of his or her time trying to reengage it.  Instead of flying the airplane.  As they are trained to do.  Because it’s safer.

A dangerous high airspeed indicates that the plane may be accelerating.  Past its maximum airspeed rating.  Which could make the plane break up in flight.  So a pilot may pull back the engine throttles.  To slow the plane.  To keep it from breaking up in flight.  Of course, if that was an erroneous airspeed, the pilot will only slow the plane down.  And perhaps cause it to stall.  And that has happened, too.

A plane has a ‘stick shaker‘ to warn the pilot of a potential stall.  Normally after you get a stick shake you push the yoke forward to lower the nose and pick up speed.  Of course, if you just got an over-speed warning you might not do this.  And you may interpret that stick-shake as buffeting from the plane just before it breaks up in flight.  So you may raise the nose.  And pull the throttle levers back. To slow the plane down.  And that’s exactly what you will do.  Slow the plane down.  Right into a stall.  Which is flying too slowly to create lift with the wings.  And once the plane stalls it will just fall out of the sky.

There’s a tradeoff in aviation.  The safer you make flying by removing the pilot from the flying the less skilled pilots become.  So when something happens, such as an erroneous airspeed indication, their initial reaction is to fix the computer.  Not fly the airplane.  And planes have fallen out of the sky because of this.  Because even the simple problems don’t have a lot of time to fix.  An old-school pilot who flew B-52s, on the other hand, would probably say something like this.  “Hot damn.  The idiot box is broken.  Now I get to fly this son-a-bitch.”

When Legislation goes Wrong those in Government Simply Say they had Nothing but the Best Intentions

Every time you try to make something too complex.  Or try to change human behavior.  You are going to get unintended consequences.  Always.  Because complex things are complex.  And people are like snowflakes.  No two are alike.  And it is the height of arrogance to believe that you know an individual better than they know themselves.  Or that ‘one size’ fits all when it comes to solutions.

But that’s government.  Complex.  And where the few think for the many.  And decide what’s best for them.  This is a recipe for unintended consequences.  Which is why so much of their legislation goes wrong.  And when it does they simply say they had nothing but the best intentions.

Of course, you see what good intentions can do in a restaurant.  Or in a jetliner at 30,000 feet.
