Children only care about the Here and Now and Instant Gratification
“Mom, can I eat this whole birthday cake?” “No.” “Dad, can I stay up past my bed time?” “No.” “Mom, can I go out and play instead of cleaning my room?” “No.” “Dad, can I skip my homework and play football with the guys?” “No.” “Mom, can I go to the concert with Billy and his big brother?” “No.” “Dad, can I use your table saw?” “No.” “Mom, will you buy me this micro dress for the dance?” “No.” “Dad, can I borrow the car this Friday to drive to a party?” “No.” “Mom, can I have boys in my bedroom?” “Hell no.” “Dad, can I have $50?” “For what?” “Stuff?” “What kind of stuff?” “You know, stuff.” “Oh, in that case, no.”
“No.” It is the most important word in a parent’s vocabulary. For kids want to do a lot of things that aren’t good for them. Things that will get them into trouble. Things that might hurt them. Things that may leave them with unpleasant and/or long-lasting consequences. Parents have to say ‘no’ because kids just don’t know any better. They only think about the here and now. Not about the future. They want instant gratification. They want to have fun. They don’t want to wait. They don’t want to work. And the last thing they want to do is to delay gratification.
So parents have to keep saying ‘no’ for their children’s own good. At least, responsible parents do. Because parents are older and wiser than their children. Contrary to popular belief children have about their parents. Children like to say that their parents “don’t know anything.” But they do. In fact, they know a lot. Because they were once impulsive children having the same arguments with their parents. And now that they are parents they see the world differently than they did as children. They see it as their parents saw it. And realize that their parents were right all along. Thanks to a lot more education, a lot more work experience and a lot more life experience. The things that makes one wiser as one gets older.
Children who never Grow Up as Adults tend to Remain Liberal and Vote Democrat
Children that grow up into responsible adults tend to be more conservative. They get jobs. Straight out of high school. Or after college. And party less. They cut back on reckless behavior. Such as drinking and driving. Because they realized they could get a DUI. They could hurt themselves. Or, worse, hurt someone else. If they used drugs they cut back. Some stop using them completely. They stop having casual sex with random people. In part to avoid an STD. In part because they want something more than just a good time. So they, instead, get married. And settle down. Raise a family. And it’s about this time that these one-time wild liberals start voting Republican. As they see there is a lot more to life than partying with booze and drugs. And having sex. Especially when they become parents.
Becoming a parent changes a person. Single coworkers may still want to go out and get a drink after work. They may look forward to the weekend so they can drink themselves into a stupor. But not a married person. At least, not a married responsible grownup. They want to go straight home to their wife. Or husband. They want to spend time with their kids. And they don’t want to do anything that could harm their kids. Like risking their job by coming in late hung over after a night of excessive drinking. They’d rather get to work early. Do their job. And build a successful career. That is both personally satisfying. And takes care of their family. Something sobriety helps. And our days tend to be easier when they don’t start with a hangover.
Children who never grow up as adults, on the other hand, tend to remain liberal. Focused on the here and now. Without a thought about the future. For them gratification is all that matters. These people tend to keep the wild ways of their youth. And those who go on to college take it up a notch. Away from their parents incessant ‘no’s they can finally say ‘yes’ to everything. And a lot of them do. They’ll get drunk and video things with their smartphones. And upload them to the Internet. The kind of things you once had to go to a pornography store to buy. But they and their friends will post these videos for all the world to see. And these things will still be floating around the Internet years later when they’re saying ‘no’ to their own children. Or interviewing for a job. Jessie Watters on The O’Reilly Factor has interviewed some of these young college students on spring break. Asking them questions about history. International events. Current events at home. And if they could identify members of the Federal government. Few could. Very few. Because they have more pressing things in their lives apparently than getting an education. At least based on what they’re doing with their smartphones.
Democrats only care about the Here and Now and Instant Gratification
Liberal Democrats love these kids. For they know all they want is to have fun. So they become the party of fun. Free birth control. Access to abortion. Decriminalizing marijuana. Anti-religion. No moral absolutes. Anything goes. Even encouraging reckless behavior (they’re going to have sex anyway so we might as well make it easier for them). Veritable anti-parents. Who tell these kids that they (these kids) know what’s best for them. Not their parents. And if they want instant gratification that’s okay. You don’t have to worry about the future because if you vote Democrat that’s something else we’ll do for you besides the birth control, abortion, marijuana and the lack of moral constraints. If you vote Democrat we’ll take care of you from cradle to grave. Just like that The Life of Julia slideshow promised. With so little education, work experience and life experience these kids don’t know any better and say, “Okay. Where do I vote.”
So the Democrats use these kids to stay in office. They know little so it is easy to lie to them. About the ‘evil Republicans’ that are as big a killjoy as their parents. And about how much better the Democrats are going to make their lives. If only they keep voting Democrat. So they do. Because the Democrats offer everything an irresponsible adult could want. Which is a shame as a lot of what the Democrats offer is bad for the rest of us. And the country. Their Keynesian economics fails over and over yet they keep using these failed policies of the past. Putting the country further into debt. And further depreciating the dollar. They lie to these kids about global warming. Allowing the Democrats to remain in power and pass crippling regulations. Threatening the coal industry. As well as increasing our energy costs. They want to raise the minimum wage for unskilled, entry-level jobs. Reducing the number of entry level jobs available for those looking to enter the workforce. And they want to take over our health care. The best health care system in the world. Replacing it with something not as good and more costly.
But these grand domestic plans require a lot of money. Which they often get from gutting the defense budget. Weakening our military (something they never liked to begin with) to free up money for buying votes (i.e., spending) elsewhere. They help justify this with a horrible foreign policy. Instead of peace through (costly) strength they choose a ‘please like us’ foreign policy. Marginalizing American Exceptionalism. Being kind to our enemies. And leaving our allies doubting our commitments. But if our enemies like us we won’t need a large military anymore. Allowing them to use those defense dollars elsewhere. And how has that been working out? Not good. Since the ‘please like us’ foreign policy juggernaut Egypt is in chaos. Syria is in a bitter civil war. Iran is developing a nuclear bomb. Israel is feeling abandoned. Al Qaeda is taking over Libya and Iraq. The Taliban will return to Afghanistan once the U.S. leaves. North Korea is test-firing ballistic missiles. And Vladimir Putin is restoring the Soviet Union. Because he can. Thanks to America’s new ‘please like us’ foreign policy. Instead of the peace through strength of previous presidents. Like Ronald Reagan. And JFK.
There’s something else children who never grow up do. Go into politics. Into the Democrat Party. Not the Republican Party. The party the Democrats derisively call the party of ‘no’. They join the Democrat Party. And do all of the things that give us the worst economic recovery since that following the Great Depression. And a more dangerous world. Despite this they still want to do more. Without caring what their actions may do to our future. Just like children. All they care about is the here and now. And instant gratification. So of course the Republicans are the party of ‘no’ because that’s what grownups say to children. ‘No’.
Thanks to President Obama the United States is now the Rodney Dangerfield of Superpowers
The American public is consumed with the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. They can’t get enough of the news coverage that is anything but news. With cable news delivering 24/7 coverage of nothing but speculation. Even the networks are giving the speculation expansive coverage. They’d never give Obamacare, Benghazi, the IRS targeting conservative groups, etc., this kind of coverage. But they will give Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 this kind of coverage. For apart from the insufferable despair of the families who lost their loved ones it’s a great mystery people want to see unfold. And be the one to solve it. But while that is going on the world is becoming a less safe place. Thanks to Vladimir Putin.
President Obama’s ‘please like us’ foreign policy has failed. The reset with Russia has not improved our relations. In fact, they are about as bad as they were during the Cold War. With Putin doing some Cold War chess playing. Completely unimpressed with President Obama he’s making bold moves. And when he does all he gets from the United States is talk. He annexed Crimea without any real opposition from the Western Powers. Especially the United States. And he is probably looking at the Baltic States now. Seeing no reason yet to stop in his quest to put the Soviet Union back together. This is what the American people are missing. For the networks are barely covering it. And the people are blissfully ignorant of how the United States is now the Rodney Dangerfield of superpowers. We get no respect from our enemies. So our enemies make bold moves. Because that’s who they are. The creators of South Park made a movie called Team America: World Police (2004). This followed 9/11 and the beginning of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. When the United States began its fight in the global war on terror. Though a comedy the writers seem to have a better grasp on the real world than the Obama administration or the mainstream media. Who think in the 21st century that war no longer exists because world leaders now discuss their differences like rational and civilized adults according to international law. And honor their agreements. But what they don’t understand is something that’s been true since the dawn of civilization. There are three types of people in the world. As a drunk in Team America: World Police explains crudely but succinctly. (WARNING: The following video is for mature audiences only. For it’s pretty rude and crude and completely inappropriate for the workplace.)
If you’ve watched the video you’ll understand what the three types are. We’ll call them D, P and A (both singular and plural). In the context of this movie America was a D. And Kim Jong Il was an A. As were the Islamist terrorists. While the leftist ‘give peace a chance’ Hollywood liberals in the movie (who belonged to the Film Actors’ Guild) were P. As was the United Nations who sent Hans Blix to inspect Kim Jong Il’s regime to make sure he didn’t have any weapons of mass destruction (WMD). —SPOILER ALERT— Team America, the world police, go tear-assing around the world, blowing up parts of countries as they hunt and kill terrorists. Making the world a safer place. While Kim Jong Il plots to set off WMDs, using the Islamist terrorists to plant his WMDs. The F.A.G. actors publicly denounce Team America for their wanton destruction and call corporations the real enemy. Even going to North Korea to attend a peace conference that Kim Jong Il was hosting. Believing Kim Jong Il was a man of peace. And were willing to kill Team America to help Kim Jong Il go forward with his peace plans. Which was actually blowing up countries all around the world into third-world status.
Hitler promised the Naïve Chamberlain that the Sudetenland would be his last Territorial Acquisition
The movie showed the futility of diplomacy when you’re dealing with A. Because they will lie and say anything you want to hear to shut you up and make you go away. And when you do they’re just going to crap all over you and the world. Because that’s what A do. The P don’t understand that. They think they can negotiate and arrive at an agreement with people who lie. History is full of treaties that A have broken. Because they don’t respect anything but strength. And if all you got are words an A just isn’t going to respect you. And will crap on you the first chance he gets. Especially if you’re a P. The Russian people understand this. During the Sochi Olympics the Daily Show‘s Jason Jones interviewed Russians during the Sochi Games. And a woman told him they have a saying in Russia. Don’t be a P. Which is why they love Vladimir Putin. He’s not a P. He’s an A.
Communists are A. They just want to crap all over everyone. During the Korean War every time they were losing on the battlefield they called for a ceasefire to negotiate a peace treaty. Using the cessation in hostilities to reinforce their weakened positions. Proving you just cannot trust an A. Or negotiate with an A. Yet the leftist ‘give peace a chance’ liberals think you can. And that all George W. Bush did by being an A was make the world hate the United States. Even though Muammar Gaddafi, who was a first class A, respected George W. Bush when he invaded Iraq. Saw that strength. Respected that strength. And did not want to get his ass kicked by that strength. So he gave up his WMDs willingly. And joined the Americans in the fight against al Qaeda (Libya is a far less safe place today than it was under Muammar Gaddafi after the Iraqi invasion). This is what A understand. Strength. It’s the one thing that makes them act. Not words. As this funny scene in Team America: World Police illustrates so poignantly. (WARNING: The following video is for mature audiences only. For it’s pretty rude and crude and completely inappropriate for the workplace.)
We ended the war in Iraq with a ceasefire. Part of the terms that Saddam Hussein agreed to was to destroy his WMDs and document their destruction. He never did. In part because he didn’t have them anymore. Having sent them over the border into Syria (most likely) on trucks and in two converted Iraqi Airways Boeings before the invasion. Adolf Hitler promised the naïve Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain that the Czechoslovakian Sudetenland would be his last territorial acquisition. Chamberlain returned to Britain with a treaty signed by Herr Hitler promising “peace in our time.” Shortly thereafter Hitler launched World War II (the bloodiest and costliest war of all time) and removed Poland from the map. Because Hitler was an A. And you just can’t negotiate with an A. Especially if you’re a P who believes we can settle all our differences if we only communicate with each other. No. An A sees anyone who wants to ‘open a dialogue’ as a P. And they will laugh at how gullible they are. Getting a lot of concessions by making promises they have no intention of keeping. A love P. Because they are so easy to crap all over.
The Russians like President Obama in Office because he is the Anti-Ronald Reagan
The Obama administration confuses being liked with being respected. They think if people like America they will respect America. Nothing could be further from the truth. People respect people they hate. At least, if they fear people they hate. A key distinction. For Vladimir Putin has no love for President Obama. Who looks at him as a P. Which Russians just don’t respect. They even have a saying. Don’t be a P. So Putin has no respect whatsoever for President Obama. Because he does not fear President Obama. The recent sanctions President Obama issued by executive order only amused the Russians. They thought they were nothing more than a joke. Even replied with in-kind sanctions of their own. Oh they had a good laugh at President Obama trying to act tough. But they just don’t respect him. But you know who they did respect? Ronald Reagan.
During a radio check President Reagan was testing the sound levels before a radio address. And he made a joke. He said into the microphone, “My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” This joke leaked out. And made it to the Soviet Union. And what do you think they did? Did they have a good laugh like they did when President Obama tried to act tough? No. They didn’t. They put their Soviet Far East Army on alert. For they did not like Ronald Reagan. But they sure as hell respected that crazy son of a bitch. And feared him. As well as the awesome military power of the United States. Which they knew President Reagan had no problem using. Unlike the current occupant of the White House. Who wants to shrink the size of the military to pre-World War I levels. Something only a P would do in the eyes of an A like Vladimir Putin. No. President Obama is more of an apologetic president for America’s greatness. While President Reagan made no apologies. He believed in American Exceptionalism. And was damn proud of it. The shiny city on the hill. The beacon of liberty. Defender of freedom. And he would broadcast the Team America theme song proudly at our enemies. Unlike the apologist now occupying the White House (WARNING: The following video is for mature audiences only. For it’s pretty rude and crude and completely inappropriate for the workplace.)
America may have its faults but it is still the best country in the world. Proven by the flow of immigrants (legal and illegal) to our shores. We may be arrogant but that’s only because we have a right to be. Because we are the best m-f’ing country in the world. F*** yeah. We’ve made the world a better place. And the world knows this. Which is why our enemies love having our country run by people who are ashamed of America’s greatness. Because they can crap all over the world and get away with it. Like Putin did by annexing Crimea. Because they know there is no crazy son of a bitch in the White House that will use the awesome power of the United States to stop them. Just a bunch of leftist ‘give peace a chance’ liberals who will wag their finger at them. And if they don’t quake with fear they will wag their finger at them again. Or write a letter. The Russians couldn’t be happier. And lament that if there were only people like the current administration running the United States in the Eighties the Soviets never would have lost the Cold War. But now Vladimir Putin, former KGB officer in the Soviet Union, sees his chance. He can put the Soviet Union together again. As they have the anti-Ronald Reagan in office now. And can do whatever the hell they want to. Because they aren’t P. They’re A.
Bad Guys won’t open their Can of Whoop-Ass if there is a Chance they’ll get their Ass Kicked
Bullies generally pick on smaller and weaker people. Smaller and weaker people don’t pick on tough guys. They don’t walk up to a bully and give him a wedgie. They’d like to. But they don’t. Why? Because if a small and weak person did they’d get their ass kicked. That’s why. And people don’t like getting their ass kicked. But sometimes it’s the tough guys that save the day.
In the opening scene of V for Vendetta Evey was about to get raped by some government thugs. Then tough guy V came along and kicked their asses. Saving Eve from a brutal rape. In Die Hard the evil Hans Gruber was going to kill everyone in that building until tough guy John McClane happened on the scene. And started killing the bad guys. Saving the day. In the movie Patton everyone wanted him thrown out of the Army after he slapped that crying soldier. But when the Allies’ drive stalled in the Normandy hedgerow country who did they turn to? That’s right. Tough guy General Patton. Who started kicking Nazi ass big time. Breaking through their lines and advancing in every compass direction while British General Bernard Montgomery was still struggling o take his D-Day objective. Caen.
People don’t like getting their ass kicked. But if they are in danger of a good ass-kicking they’d want someone on their side who can kick ass as good as the next guy. For even bad guys don’t want to get their ass kicked. And if there is a chance of that happening they’re going to think long and hard before opening their can of whoop-ass. Especially when someone else’s can of whoop-ass is bigger.
Only the Military Might of the United States could contain Soviet Expansion
The Roman Empire had one mighty can of whoop-ass. Something her potential enemies understood. And feared. So they didn’t cause any trouble. Because they didn’t want to get their ass kicked. Which is why from approximately 27 BC to 180 AD there was relative peace in the world. Pax Romana. For the Romans had the mightiest military force in the world. And if you went up against them you were most likely going to lose. So they didn’t. Instead, choosing to live in peace.
The British Empire was even larger than the Roman Empire. And had an even larger can of whoop-ass. Not only did they have armies throughout their empire which was so large that the sun never set on it. The Royal Navy ruled the seas. Which meant if you caused any trouble in the world you could expect an ass-kicking. Either from her mighty military power. Or her aid to a smaller and weaker country under threat from an aggressive neighbor. The bad guys learned. It wasn’t worth it. If you tried to break the peace you were going to get your ass kicked. Which is why from 1815 through 1914 when the British Empire ruled the world there was relative peace. Pax Britannica.
The United States of America had come of age during the 20th century. Growing even bigger and stronger than the empire that sired her. The British Empire. Who went into decline during the 20th century. But just as Pax Britannica drew to a close and the world became a more dangerous place the United States stepped in. Allowing the Allies to defeat Nazi Germany. And Imperial Japan. She grew to have the biggest can of whoop-ass in history. And became the world’s policeman. Pushing back against Soviet expansion. In Europe. The Balkans. The Middle East. And Southeast Asia. The Soviets wanted to conquer the world. And would have if not for America’s mighty military to counter their threat. Leading to a period of relative peace following World War II. Pax Americana. As only the military might of the United States could contain Soviet expansion.
Vladimir Putin feels that he can put the old Soviet Union back together during the Obama Administration
During a sound check before a radio address President Reagan made a joke. He said, “My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” Reagan had a sense of humor and those present laughed. The joke leaked. The Soviets heard it. And they put their Soviet Far East Army on alert. You see, they had great respect for the awesome military power of the United States. And they respected Reagan. They did not like him. But they respected him. And if he said he was going to open a can of whoop-ass on them they got nervous. For President Reagan may have spoken softly. But he was not afraid to kick ass.
The Soviets had no such respect for Reagan’s predecessor. Jimmy Carter. In fact, they had so little respect for him that they developed a nuclear first-strike plan. For Carter was gutting the military. And wasn’t a tough guy when it came to foreign policy. He was a president who wanted to focus on domestic policy. A sign of weakness the Soviets could smell. Anyone who gutted the military to pay for more domestic spending would never pull the nuclear trigger. At least that’s what the Soviets thought. Which is why they prepared a nuclear first-strike plan during the Carter administration. Sure they could win a nuclear war against him. The Soviets thought no such thing during the Reagan administration. So instead of a nuclear war (which may have happened in a Carter second term) we had peace. Because of our strength.
Peace through strength. If you’re a bad-ass people will leave you alone. Because no one wants to get their ass kicked. If you’re hell-bent on beating the crap out of your neighbor so you can take her resources and there is a bad-ass in the world that can bring a world of hurt down on you it will make you think. And pause. This is why there was a Pax Romana. A Pax Britannica. And a Pax Americana. Because people respect a bad-ass. And will not incite it. They may hate the bad-ass. But they will respect it. And not piss it off.
President Obama has a strong domestic agenda. Like Jimmy Carter. He doesn’t want to deal with foreign policy. Like Jimmy Carter. And he is not respected or feared by the world’s bad guys. Like Jimmy Carter. Who is far more inclined to make a speech and threaten action. But is far less likely to open a can of whoop-ass. Like Ronald Reagan. Which is why Vladimir Putin feels that he can put the old Soviet Union back together during the Obama administration. Because he doesn’t fear the wrath of President Obama. As no one does. For he is all bark and no bite. At least, so far. Apart from killing a bunch of people that can’t fight back. Drone strikes. Bombing Libya (that was no threat to American interests). And killing Osama bin Laden with a SEAL team. More of an imperial use of force than acting as the world’s policeman to safeguard liberty and democracy. So Vladimir Putin has little to worry about during an Obama presidency. Unlike conservatives in America.
Wherever the Soviets pushed the Americans pushed back to Contain the Expansion of Communism
Once upon a time Democrats were practically warmongers. Woodrow Wilson got us into World War I. FDR got us into World War II. Harry Truman got us into the Korean War. And LBJ got us into the Vietnam War. While Republicans were nearly pacifists. Dwight Eisenhower got us out of the Korean War. And Richard Nixon got us out of the Vietnam War.
Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II. Saw the carnage of war up close. And was glad when it was over. Unlike General Patton. Who wanted to invade the Soviet Union. Because he knew we would have to fight them sooner or later. And rather do it then when they had the most awesome military force in the world still in Europe. General Patton lost command of Third Army because of talk like that. And later would die from injuries he got in a freak car accident.
It didn’t take long following the end of World War II for the Soviets to become the new big bad in town. Just like General Patton foresaw. Truman stood up to them in Berlin. Greece. Turkey. Iran. And Korea. Wherever they pushed the Americans tried to hold the line. To contain the expansion of communism. It was the Cold War. And it first got hot in Korea. But the UN forces held the line in Korea. After three years of war. About as long as America spent fighting in Europe during World War II.
JFK’s refusal to commit American Military Power during the Bay of Pigs Invasion led to the Cuban Missile Crisis
Communism was a thorn in the side of democracy. The democratic West believed in peace through strength. With the occasional war breaking the peace. While the communist East believed in a perpetual state of war with the occasional peace breaking that war. The communists sought to expand through violent revolution. If you contained it early (like in the Berlin Airlift) you could avoid a shooting war. And keep it cold. But if they got a foothold you could find yourself mired in a hot and prolonged war. Like in Korea.
When Fidel Castro turned Cuba communist it was not a good thing for the United States. For all their efforts to contain communism throughout the world here they were. On Cuba. Within missile range of the United States. And Castro was cozying up to the Soviets. Which is why President Eisenhower gave the green light for the CIA to remove Castro from power. To remove a threat so close to the United States. The plan was the Bay of Pigs Invasion. Which proceeded under the following administration. JFK’s.
The invasion, though, did not go well. And unlike in the Guatemalan coup d’état, JFK did not commit American military power to help the invaders (unlike Eisenhower did in the Guatemalan coup). Who were soon pushed back. And defeated. Which breathed new life in Cuba’s communist revolution. Brought them more into the Soviet sphere. And encouraged the Soviets to test this young president. Which they did. By sending nuclear missiles to Cuba. Leading to the Cuban Missile Crisis. And near nuclear war (Castro’s right hand man, Che Guevara, was angry with the Soviets because they refused to nuke the United States during the crisis). While the Cuban people suffered under their communist oppressors. And still do.
Today Iran—and Radical Islam—is the Thorn in the Side of Democracy that Communism once Was
Truman was the last Democrat warrior president. LBJ got us into Vietnam. But he also gave us the Great Society. Turning the nation towards a welfare state. A very costly welfare state. Which the great costs of the Vietnam War threatened. The government, much like they did during the Revolutionary War, began printing money to pay for all of this spending. Devaluing a dollar pegged to gold. With nations concerned with this devaluation they traded their dollars for gold. Which is what is supposed to happen under a gold standard. So nations don’t devalue their currencies. But printing money is easier than cutting spending. So President Nixon decoupled the dollar from gold. So they could really print it. Giving us the inflationary Seventies.
Since then Democrat presidents have done two things. Expanded the welfare state. And demonized their political opponents. Which extended to their foreign policy. President Carter cut back on defense spending. And tried to make friends with our archenemy. The Soviet Union. A president the Soviets had little respect for. Even considering a nuclear first-strike policy as they didn’t think Carter would ever launch his nuclear weapons. And then President Carter criticized American ally, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, for his human rights violation. There was revolutionary fervor in the air. The Shah implored for help from their long-time friend and ally. The United States. Who assured the Shah that the Americans would intervene militarily on his behalf. But didn’t. The Iranian Revolution followed. And Iran became America’s new archenemy.
Iranian oil won World War II. It fed the Red Army. Iran served as a portal into the Soviet Union. War material as well as oil flowed through Iran and into the Soviet Union. After the war the Soviets didn’t want to leave Iran. Give up that oil. Or a warm-weather port on the Indian Ocean. But the British and the Americans helped the Iranians keep the Soviets at bay. Their actions included a coup. And some human rights violations. To keep what happened in Eastern Europe following World War II from happening in Iran. Iran prospered. And Westernized. It was becoming everything the American left loved. Secular. It was becoming more like America. Where men and women enjoyed doing things they could enjoy in New York City. Which angered the Islamists.
Today Iran—and radical Islam—is the thorn in the side of democracy that communism once was. And unlike their Cold War warrior forefathers, today’s Democrats choose party over country. Basing their foreign policy on expanding the welfare state. Or demonizing their political opponents. President Clinton treated al Qaeda’s increasing acts of hostility against Western/American interests as a legal issue. Which grew bolder until they culminated in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Clinton did this so he wouldn’t waste money on defense by risking war to protect America. Or anger his liberal base. After 9/11, George W. Bush fought back.
The Democrats have demonized George W. Bush as a rich oil man who traded blood for oil. While at the same time they said he was purposely causing oil shortages to raise the price of oil. When an opportunity came to overthrow America’s new archenemy, Iran, President Obama did nothing to support the Green Revolution in Iran following questionable election results that kept Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in power. An intervention that would have been in the best interests of both America and the Iranian people. But when the Arab Spring blew through Egypt he was quick to tell our friend and ally, Hosni Mubarak, that he had to go. Turning Egypt over to the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood. But when civil war came to Syria he chose to do nothing. Until now (to save face from his ‘red line’ comment about chemical weapons?). When the opposition has most probably been infiltrated by al Qaeda.
What is the constant in these Democrat foreign policy decisions? They are the opposite of what the Republicans would have done. So they couldn’t have done them. For it would have vindicated George W. Bush. Angered their liberal base. And made the world a safer place.
The US supported Saddam Hussein because of the Iranian Revolution and the Iran Hostage Crisis
Remember Saddam Hussein? He was the dictator of Iraq that the US toppled from power. Because of intelligence reports that he had weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). In particular chemical weapons. And the reason this intelligence was so believable is that Hussein had used chemical weapons. Against the Kurdish people in Halabja. In southern Kurdistan. An act of genocide. And the greatest chemical attack against a civilian population. As well as against the Iranians in the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988).
One of the requirements of the armistice that ended the Gulf War (1990-1991) was for Hussein to destroy his chemical weapons stockpile. And document that. With UN inspectors. Which never happened. So technically a state of war still existed when George W. Bush launched the Iraq War (2003-2011). Giving all the legal authorization he needed. But he still went to the UN. And asked the US Congress for permission to invade. Which they gave. And the US-led coalition went through the Iraqi defenses like a hot knife through butter. But never found those WMDs. Which was pretty unbelievable. But there was something that was even more unbelievable. Saddam Hussein, the brutal dictator the US toppled from power, used to be a US ally.
How can this be, you ask? How could the US ally themselves with such a bad, bad man? Because of Iran. Iran used to be an ally of the US. Then came the Iranian Revolution in 1979. And the Iran hostage crisis (November 1979-January 1981). This marked the time Iran began calling America the great Satan. And began their war against the West. Especially against the US. Hostile rhetoric. Some state-sponsored terrorism. And leading the anti-American sentiment throughout the Muslim world. So when Saddam Hussein invaded Iran the US threw in with him. Because the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
The Muslim Brotherhood had a Problem with Anwar Sadat and Hosni Mubarak keeping the Peace with Israel
Now is this just petty? Or good foreign policy? The whole enemy of my enemy is my friend thing? Well, it turns out that it is good foreign policy. For the goal of foreign policy is to make things better for your country. And in the case of Iran and Iraq the choice was clear. To make things better for the US you allied with Iraq. Because Iran was going full Islamist against the US. So by helping Iraq wage war against Iran the less time and resources Iran had to further anti-American sentiment throughout the Muslim world. And should Iraq win the war it would bring Iran’s oppressive theocracy to an end. Making life better for the average Iranian. Especially for Iranian women.
But the Iran-Iraq war ended in a stalemate. After 8 years of bitter fighting. But when the war was over nothing changed. The border was right where it was before the war. But it wasn’t all for nothing. With the stalemate Iraq kept its Shia minority population from catching the Iranian bug. Leaving the Sunni majority safely in the majority. Something a lot of the Arab strongmen had in common. Including Egypt under Gamal Abdel Nasser. Who had chosen to align Egypt with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. But when Nasser died and Anwar Sadat took over he switched sides in the Cold War. Aligning Egypt with the United States. Even signing a peace treaty with Israel. Something the Shia minority population did not like in the least.
The U.S. poured money into Egypt. And made the Egyptian military a force to be reckoned with. Making Egypt the most modern Arab state. The most powerful. And the most secular/Western. Women could go to college and wear Western clothes. Like they could in Iran before the Iranian Revolution. Something the Shia minority population did not like. Nor their growing political party. The Muslim Brotherhood. Who really had a problem with Anwar Sadat making peace with Israel. As did the Egyptian Islamic Jihad movement. Who assassinated Sadat (1981). As they wanted to replace the Egyptian government with an Islamic state. Just like the Muslim Brotherhood wanted to do. Which is why when Hosni Mubarak succeeded Sadat one of the things he did was to continue the ban on the Muslim Brotherhood. And oppressed and jailed its members.
The Nations interested in World Peace favor the Egyptian Military over the Muslim Brotherhood
During the height of the Roman Empire there was great world peace. The Pax Romana (27 BC to 180 AD). Made possible by Rome’s massive military might. During the height of the British Empire there was great world peace. The Pax Britannica (1815–1914). Made possible by Britain’s massive military might. And their unchallenged sea power. Which let them maintain a balance of power. For any powerful nation that threatened the peace with thoughts of attacking a weaker neighbor could not attack that neighbor without taking on the mighty British Empire. For to maintain the Pax Britannica the British would intervene on the behalf of the weaker power. Allowing weaker nations to live next to more powerful nations without threat of invasion.
This is what a powerful military can give you. Peace. If that military power is controlled by a nation interested in keeping the peace. Which is what the Egyptian military gave Hosni Mubarak. Under his presidency there was peace in the Middle East. The Suez Canal was open to world trade. Egyptian tourism thrived. Egypt was a modern and secular nation. Women and Christians lived with the greatest liberty and safety during the Mubarak presidency. Because Mubarak kept the peace. Sometimes with brutality. Especially when it came to the Muslim Brotherhood. Which is why there was peace in the Middle East. And women and Christians in Egypt enjoyed liberty and safety. Because the people who wanted to take all of that away were prevented from doing just that. But then came the Arab Spring. And President Obama told Hosni Mubarak that he had to go. Instead of working with him to implement reforms to ease the tensions in Egypt.
In Egypt there are basically two political forces. The military. Which kept peace with Israel. And in the Middle East. Then there’s the Muslim Brotherhood. Who wants to remove Israel from the map. And install a theocracy in Egypt like they have in Iran. When Mubarak faced open rebellion he did not turn the military onto his people. He stepped down from power. And the Muslim Brotherhood rushed in to fill the political vacuum. Assuring the world that they wouldn’t do pretty much everything they did. And one of the last things the democratically-elected Mohamed Morsi did was to give himself dictatorial powers. Just as bad if not worse than Mubarak exercised. Only without the peace, liberty and prosperity enjoyed under Mubarak. Democratically elected or not a Morsi presidency did not foster democracy. Or peace. Just as the Muslim Brotherhood does not foster democracy or peace. Which leaves the other political power in Egypt. The military. Which is why Western nations and those nations interested in world peace favor the military over the Muslim Brotherhood. While the enemies of the West (i.e., Iran) support the Brotherhood. Because the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
The biggest names in the entertainment community are mostly liberals. Why? Because they are more enlightened than most, of course. Liberals revel in being smarter and more informed than those knuckle-dragging Neanderthal Republicans. Who are just so stupid. As anyone is who votes for them. Yet these smart people are often surprised to learn that something they did wasn’t all that smart (see Lopez sings ‘Happy Birthday’ to Turkmenistan head by Nekesa Mumbi Moody posted 6/30/2013 on Yahoo! News).
Jennifer Lopez sang “Happy Birthday” to the leader of Turkmenistan during a show, but her representative said she wouldn’t have performed there at all if she had known there were human rights issues in the country…
Lopez’s publicist says the event was vetted by Lopez’s staff: “Had there been knowledge of human rights issues any kind, Jennifer would not have attended…”
In 2011, Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank profusely apologized after attending a birthday party for Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who had been accused of torture and killings; she said she didn’t have a full understanding of the event.
Beyonce, Nelly Furtado, 50 Cent, Mariah Carey and Usher were paid handsomely to perform at parties linked to the late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. All later announced plans to donate their performance fees to charity and said they hadn’t known the leader was connected to terrorism.
Granted, most Americans probably could not find Turkmenistan on a map. But they should know that it’s one of those former Soviet republics in central Asia. The crossroads of ancient history. And beyond. Thousands of years of history. And thousands of years of past wrongs to right. Because of this some of these former Soviet republics don’t exactly have stellar human rights records. Staunch advocates of human rights (as most of the entertainment elite are) should know that there is some bad stuff happening in the area. And should at least look up the country they’re going to on Wikipedia.
Chechnya is a hotbed of Islamist activity. And one of the more brutal places in the world. Islamist separatist militants fighting for a free Chechnya occupied a Beslan school in a hostage crisis in 2004. Ending in the death of 186 children. Chechen Islamists also were responsible for the 2002 Moscow theater hostage crisis. With the demand that the Russians leave Chechnya. That ended with the Russians pumping in some gas into the theater to subdue the terrorists. Which it did. But the gas also killed about 128 of the hostages. Incidentally, the Boston Marathon bombers had a Chechnya connection, too. The fighting in the area can be brutal. And the human rights can be lacking.
How anyone cannot know that Moammar Gadhafi was a sponsor of terrorism is beyond me. One of the greatest acts of terrorism was the Libyan sponsored bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland. Which was in retaliation for Ronald Reagan bombing Libya. Which he did in response to Libya’s bombing of a German discotheque frequented by American service men. Gadhafi was a thorn in the America’s side during the Eighties. And he was still sponsoring terrorism until he renounced terrorism after George W. Bush invaded Iraq following 9/11. He was right up there with Saddam Hussein and the State of Iran when it comes to America’s greatest enemies. Yet these people had no idea he was connected to terrorism.
These are not the most informed people in the world. Yet they are treated as if they are. And when they make a political endorsement people will listen to them. Even if they have no idea what’s going on in the world of foreign policy. But they will tell people who to vote for to run the nation’s foreign policy. And the sad thing is that these people probably don’t understand economics any better than they understand foreign policy. Yet they are making political endorsements. Which people are listening to. Because they sound so enlightened and smart. And nothing at all like those knuckle-dragging Neanderthal Republicans.
Candidate Barack Obama called George W. Bush a cowboy. Whose swaggering foreign policy inflamed our enemies. And distanced our allies from us. That was no way to conduct foreign policy, said then candidate Obama. When he got into office he would engage in diplomacy. Talk to our allies. And even to our enemies. Instead of dictating our policy to them. By doing this he was going to make the world a safer and friendlier place. Because it would be a Bush-free world. But things haven’t been working so well for President Obama as Candidate Obama thought they would (see Analysis: For Obama, a world of Snowden troubles by Warren Strobel and Paul Eckert posted 6/23/2013 on Reuters).
Since his first day in office, President Barack Obama’s foreign policy has rested on outreach: resetting ties with Russia, building a partnership with China and offering a fresh start with antagonistic leaders from Iran to Venezuela.
But the global travels on Sunday of former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden highlight the limits of that approach. Leaders Obama has wooed – and met recently – were willing to snub the American president.
The cocky defiance by so-called “non-state actors” – Snowden himself and the anti-secrecy group, WikiLeaks, completes the picture of a world less willing than ever to bend to U.S. prescriptions of right and wrong…
If Russia allows Snowden to continue on his journey toward Ecuador, it could wipe out what is left of Obama’s policy, dating from 2009, of trying to “reset” relations with Moscow after they turned chilly under his predecessor.
Wow. With friends like Russia and China President Obama doesn’t need any enemies.
So the love-fest didn’t last. Candidate Obama had traveled the world where people received him as if he was the second coming of Christ. He read soaring speeches from his teleprompters. And promised to be nicer to both friend and enemy than George W. Bush. But all he got from it was learning the meaning of the old adage that nice guys finish last. Because those who only respect strength don’t respect nice guys.
President Obama finally joined the Europeans in Libya. And what thanks did he get from the newly freed Libyans? On the anniversary of 9/11 they killed our ambassador and three other Americans in Benghazi.
Americans continue to die in Afghanistan. Power in Egypt went to the Muslim Brotherhood. Who has deep ties to Iran. Our mortal enemy. The Arab spring movement President Obama endorsed by throwing our longtime ally Hosni Mubarak under the bus was more of an Israeli-American winter. The democracy that was spreading in these predominantly Muslim countries was a move towards a very conservative Islam. Becoming more like Iran. Who, once again, is our mortal enemy. And less like the democracy enjoyed in Western countries.
And now this Edward Snowden matter. Where all of that ‘soft-love’ of the Obama foreign policy not only distanced our friends from us. But it made them jab their finger in our eye. To use the words of New York Senator Chuck Schumer. Something that didn’t happen that often in the Bush presidency. For he projected strength. And though our enemies may have hated him for it. They did respect him. As did our friends.
The Mainstream Media sacrifice their Journalistic Integrity to help the Obama Administration Advance their Agenda
The president has warned that the $85 billion in spending cuts of the sequester will gut government programs leaving Americans at great peril. This despite baseline budgeting automatically increases spending every year. From 1974 (after Nixon decoupled the dollar from gold and the government adopted baseline budgeting) through 2008 (before the spending orgy of the Obama administration) federal spending increased approximately 7.5% each year. Crunching the numbers for the spending increase from 2012 to 2013 we get $284.7 billion. Applying the cuts of the sequester reduces this increase in spending to $199.7 billion. We will spend more in 2013 than we did in 2012. Even AFTER the sequester cuts. So all the peril the president is warning us about is not real. He’s lying for political gain.
Yet the mainstream media is discussing this issue as if there are real cuts in spending. That we will reduce spending in the numerous government programs the president warns about if we let the sequester happen. Less food inspection. Less airport security. Fewer police officers. Fewer firefighters. Fewer teachers. Fewer flu vaccinations. And less childcare. In their reports they discuss these as a matter of fact. When they are just not true. And it’s no secret. Anyone can do what we did and look at federal outlays and see the automatic spending increases each year. And see that we will still spend more in 2013 after the sequester cuts than we did in 2012. You’d think a journalist would study the facts. The historical record. And then question the president and his administration. Ask them why they are lying. But they don’t. Why?
Because they are partisan. Committed to the leftist agenda the president is trying to pass. So they either help spread the lie. Being complicit in the lie. Or they spread the lie because they are victims of the lie. They are so committed to the leftist agenda that they don’t question anything coming from the liberal left. Because they want to believe. They sacrifice their journalistic integrity to help the administration advance their agenda. More a propaganda arm of the administration than a free press. The kind of journalism they practice in Venezuela. Cuba. China. North Korea. And the kind of journalism they practiced in East Germany. The Soviet Union. And Nazi Germany. Where there was no free press. Only state propaganda. Propaganda in a totalitarian regime is one thing. They already oppress their people and their news is more for the benefit of outsiders. Where they lie about record harvests. And record gains in industrial production. Things their people have long stopped believing as they suffer through the misery of the reality. But it’s different in a free country. For it lends legitimacy for illegitimate actions of government. And allows them to overstep the restraints of their constitutional authority.
The Mainstream Media helped Downplay the Resurgent al Qaeda in Benghazi to help President Obama win Reelection
In 2010 the greatest cause of accidental deaths for children age 5-15 was motor vehicle accidents. In 2010 there were 806 deaths. Representing 49.1% of all deaths. The number two cause was drowning with 251 deaths. Or 15.3% of the total. Next came fire/burn at 135 deaths. Then death by suffocation at 79 deaths. Then death by other land transportation at 68 deaths. Then poisoning at 54 deaths. Then came firearms at 37 deaths. Yet many in the mainstream media actively support the Obama administration in their push for gun control. Especially a ban on assault weapons. Even if (as they say so often) it saves only one child. But guns aren’t the leading cause of death for children. In fact, as horrific as scenes like the Newtown shooting are they are very rare occurrences. Far more children die in automobile accidents each year. No doubt because we are driving smaller cars to save the planet (lighter cars means greater gas mileage and less pollution). But the journalists don’t report this fact. Because they endorse the leftist agenda of saving the planet. And more gun control. Even if saving the planet means the death of more children from driving in smaller and less safe cars. While more gun control probably won’t save a single child.
The Obama administration’s foreign policy record has been a poor one. The greatest threat to peace and stability in the Mideast and North Africa is Iran. Yet the Obama administration did not support the Green Revolution protesting the 2009 Iranian election results that most felt were unfair. There are few bigger enemies of the United States. The Iranian supported insurgency killed or wounded a lot of U.S. military in Iraq. Our strongest allies in the region (Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia) all feared growing Iranian influence in the region. But given an opportunity to support an uprising that could overthrow a great enemy to peace and stability the Obama administration did nothing. But when the Arab Spring swept through Egypt the president abandoned one of America’s most stalwart allies and the anchor to stability in the region. Hosni Mubarak. Now the Iranian influence in Egypt is stronger than ever. When the Arab Spring spread to Libya the Obama administration supported that movement, too. Despite Colonel Muammar Gaddafi having denounced terrorism and supported the Americans in the war against al Qaeda. When the Arab Spring spread to Syria the president did not support that protest. Despite Syria being Iran’s strongest ally in the region. A sponsor of terrorism. And a nation with a chemical arsenal likely manufactured by Iraq (those weapons of mass destruction that Saddam Hussein had used on his people but had disappeared when the Americans arrived on the scene, likely having skedaddled across the border into Syria). As bad as the ruling regime was in Syria we did nothing to help Syrians overthrow their oppressor.
Now civil war engulfs Syria. Elements of al Qaeda have joined the opposition. Making sure Iran wins however things turn out there. And the Iranian influence is stronger than ever in Libya. When al Qaeda killed the American diplomat in Benghazi the Obama administration made up a story about a YouTube video causing spontaneous protests that led to the ambassador’s death along with three other Americans. To downplay a resurgent al Qaeda during the 2012 election campaign. As they had refused to beef up security in Benghazi as the ambassador requested. Because it would look bad in the 2012 election. Yet the mainstream media did not question these very poor decisions the Obama administration made for political reasons. Instead accepting their position that there was nothing newsworthy in Benghazi. Which they wholeheartedly reported. Refusing to even ask questions. Such as why did they refuse the ambassador’s request for more security? Who edited the talking points for Ambassador Rice used for the Sunday morning shows? Or why is al Qaeda now stronger in the Middle East, North Africa and West Africa after 4 years of the Obama administration that they were during 8 years of the Bush administration? No. They showed no journalistic curiosity. Or integrity. Simply accepting the administration’s statements as fact. While the Middle East and Africa become more dangerous places.
The Mainstream Media is no longer a Free Press for the People but a Propaganda Arm of the Obama Administration
Obamacare is the most sweeping change to the American economy since LBJ’s Great Society. Which was the most sweeping change since FDR’s New Deal. The American Left has always wanted a national health care system. Just like what they have in the United Kingdom. The Left likes to point to their National Health Service (NHS) as the right way to do health care. As does the mainstream media. Yet if you read the British papers their NHS is not all the American Left says it is. Britain’s aging population has caused health care spending to explode. The UK is in the midst of massive budget cuts to bring down health care spending. While the NHS has long tried to deal with chronic problems of long wait times. Rationing. A shortage of doctors and nurses. Even ambulances. Their emergency rooms are overflowing with people with non-emergencies as the NHS closed their neighborhood clinics to reduce costs. And the quality of care has been falling in their hospitals. The problems in the NHS are no secret. All you have to do is pick up a British paper and read about them. For they are ongoing. Yet the mainstream media never reported these problems during the Obamacare debate. Or what passed for a debate. No. They never asked how Obamacare was going to avoid all the problems they were having in the NHS. Which they should have. As the US has an aging population, too. Worse, they have about five times the population the UK has. Guaranteeing any problems they have will be five times worse in the US. Serious questions a good journalist should have asked. But no. They didn’t. Because they support the liberal agenda more than they believe in journalistic integrity. So they only report what helps the administration. While avoiding anything that is critical of them. Or their agenda.
When it comes to economics the mainstream media are all supporters of Keynesian economics. Despite their record of failure. When Nixon decoupled the dollar from gold in 1971 it allowed the government to go all in with Keynesian economics. And they did. Printing so much money that it led to excessive inflation, high unemployment and economic stagnation. Ronald Reagan reversed those Keynesian policies. His administration stopped printing money. And got the government out of the private sector economy. Cutting regulations. As well as tax rates. And economic activity exploded. There was so much economic activity that tax revenue nearly doubled. Even at those lower tax rates. But the mainstream media doesn’t report this. Instead, they revise history. Always supporting Keynesian economic policies as they allow government to expand. So they can implement their leftist agenda. Which is anti-business. Pushing higher regulations. And higher taxes. And whenever anyone talks about Reaganomics they say those cuts in tax rates only increased the deficit. When the historical record clearly shows tax receipts increased. Which they could easily look up (see Table 2.1—RECEIPTS BY SOURCE: 1934–2017). But they don’t. Or chose not to. Preferring to support the liberal agenda. Instead of having journalistic integrity.
The mainstream media today is no longer a free press for the people. They are an extension of the Democrat Party. At least the liberal wing of the Democrat Party. More of a propaganda arm of the Obama administration. That is more interested in changing the country than keeping our politicians honest. Or reporting the facts. They are fiercely partisan. Or they are just not very smart. Either woefully ignorant of the material they report on. Or so in the bag for the Obama administration that they will report falsehoods as truth. The kind of thing that isn’t a big deal in a totalitarian regime. But a pretty big deal in a free country with a government that continues to try to exceed its constitutional authority. For a free press is the vanguard of a free country. Keeping the politicians honest so they can’t exceed their constitutional authority. And if the journalists aren’t going to do their job by the time we find out what our politicians are doing it will be too late. As we now have Obamacare as law. Which passed on partisan lines. With enough moderates and independents voting for Obamacare as few in America knew of all the problems the British were having with their national health care. Today it’s Obamacare. Tomorrow it may be gun control. Or a war in the Middle East thanks to a resurgent al Qaeda. And a growing Iranian influence. Thanks to such a poor job in foreign policy that if the mainstream media had reported it honestly President Obama may not have won reelection. And four Americans may not have died in Benghazi.
The US enjoyed a Booming Economy due to Trade with Great Britain and the Protection of that Trade by Britain’s Royal Navy
In politics there is domestic policy. Where politicians can really make a mess of the nation. And then there’s foreign policy. Where politicians can make an even bigger mess of things. Because nations are not isolated from other nations in the world. And what they say or do can have a great impact on those nations who threatened them. And those nations who peacefully coexist with them. Bad foreign policy can do anything from hurting the economy (by disrupting international trade). To causing war.
America came into being in part due to the treaties they made with the King of France. Louis XVI. Who helped them overthrow their king’s rule. An interesting thing for a king to do. What with Louis being a king himself. And the last thing he wanted was his subjects to overthrow him. Which they would do a decade or so later. As they were inflamed with the spirit of liberty. Thanks to the American Revolution. The very thing that Louis helped the Americans win. Who did so to improve his position against his perpetual enemy. Great Britain. But in the end he lost his own kingdom.
The Franco-American treaties included a perpetual military alliance. Such that if a hostile nation attacked France the U.S. was obligated to help protect the French West Indies. Under a commercial treaty French privateers could use U.S. ports. Meaning that if they captured an enemy ship, say a British ship, they could bring that prize into a U.S. port. Even refitting the ship into another French privateer to go out and attack more British shipping. All sensible and reasonable considering the U.S. was at war with Great Britain at the time they entered those treaties. But the U.S. did not remain in a perpetual state of way with Great Britain. In fact, the U.S. enjoyed a booming economy in part due to trade with Great Britain. And the protection of that trade by Britain’s Royal Navy. The most powerful navy in the world.
The Port of New Orleans was the Gateway for all American Farm Goods West of the Appalachians
So as war clouds loomed over Europe again with the outbreak of the French Revolution these treaties complicated matters for the young nation. She had no navy. Not much of a standing army. And a lot of debt from the last war. Which was not an enjoyable experience having lasted some 8 years before the Treaty of Paris of 1783 officially ended it. Now the nation was enjoying peace and economic growth. And the last thing they wanted was another war. Which was going to be difficult to avoid. And the animosity between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson didn’t help. As they both wanted the young nation to remain neutral. But they each wanted that neutrality to lean in opposite ways.
In 1790 war loomed between Great Britain and Spain. The Spanish had allied themselves with France in the American Revolution to settle some old scores with Britain. That war did not end as well as they had hoped. As Gibraltar was still British. So there was that. Among other deeply held…differences. When it looked like they would return to war the British in Canada sent an official to meet with the Washington administration. To get permission for the passage of British troops on American territory to attack Spanish Louisiana. Which is where the Mississippi River flowed through to the Port of New Orleans. The gateway for all American farm goods west of the Appalachians.
This was a complex issue. For the Spanish didn’t really like the Americans. Wanting to keep them as far east of the Mississippi river as possible. So on the one hand getting the Spanish out of North America completely might have been a good thing. But replacing the Spanish with the British not so good. Alexander Hamilton wanted to grant the British this passage. In exchange for a guarantee of navigation rights on the Mississippi River. He also wanted to grant them passage as he feared they would take it with or without the American’s permission. And if they did without that permission the Americans would have no choice but to go to war to preserve American honor and her territorial sovereignty. So supporting the British was the only way to save face in the international community without going to war. In the end, though, the British and the Spanish resolved their differences peacefully.
Genêt refitted the British Brigantine Little Sarah into the Commerce Raider Petit Démocrate, Pushing the Americans Closer to War
The British didn’t go to war with the Spanish. But the French and British did in 1793. Which caused a lot of trouble in America. For the American people still hated the British. Despite a lucrative trade with them. A trade protected by their Royal Navy. But that did little to make them forget all those years of war. Or forget the people who helped them win their independence. The French. So when the French Revolution broke out, and the French and the British went to war again, the American people sided with the French. Despite what was happening in Paris. The Terror. And the execution of the king and queen. As far as they were concerned the only good king was a dead king. But that dead king posed a problem for American foreign policy. Those Franco-American treaties were made with that now dead king. And his court. Which no longer existed. So were the Americans still bound by those treaties?
Which brought up an even bigger question. Should the Americans recognize the French Republic? No other nation had. And after the execution of King Louis and Marie Antoinette, it was unlikely any monarchy would. So should the Americans be first? Hamilton said, “No.” While Jefferson said, “Yes.” As far as the Franco-American treaties Hamilton did not want to honor them as that government no longer existed. Jefferson insisted on honoring them as if they were made with the new French Republic. Jefferson also insisted that Washington receive the new French envoy. Citizen Edmond Genêt. Washington ultimately consented to receiving Citizen Genêt. But he also issued his Proclamation of Neutrality. Telling the British and the French that America would remain friendly but impartial to both. Which did not go over well with the French. Or the American people.
Genêt landed in South Carolina. And travelled overland to Philadelphia. Getting a hero’s welcome along the way. Genêt even said that Washington was jealous of him for how the American people loved him more than the president. These actions and remarks did not endear Genêt to the Washington administration. Washington and Hamilton gave him a cool reception. While Jefferson gave him a very warm reception. Telling him he had a friend in the Secretary of State. Genêt demanded an advance on the money America owed France. Hamilton refused. Knowing what he wanted that money for. To pay for the Armée du Mississippi and the Armée des Florides that George Rogers Clarke was putting together for him on paper. To attack the Spanish in Louisiana and in Florida. When Hamilton refused he complained to Jefferson. Saying he was clearly favoring the British Crown over the Franco-American alliance. And even lied. Saying that if he agreed to use that money to contract with Hamilton’s friends he could have it. Further convincing Jefferson of the corruption at the Treasury Department under Hamilton.
As bad as all of that was Genêt was also outfitting privateers that were attacking and capturing British shipping. Worse, he was bringing these prizes back to American ports to sell. Which did not look very neutral to Britain. Who demanded their ships back. And that the Americans close these ports to the French. Which Washington did. For the last thing the Americans wanted was another war with Britain. Chaffing under the American restrictions Genêt refitted the British brigantine Little Sarah into the commerce raider Petit Démocrate. Telling Jefferson he did so by the authority of the Franco-American treaties. And when she set out to sea it captured one British ship after another. Pushing the Americans closer to war with the British. Turning the American people against the French. And the Republican Party. Who had so warmly embraced Citizen Genêt. So that was the end of Genêt. And the Franco-American treaties. The Americans would remain neutral. Even if that neutrality favored the British. Which turned out to be a good thing. As the whole world would be at war with France in a few years. With even the American people demanding to go to war with France. Thankfully, America’s second president, John Adams, was able to keep that from happening.
A Iranian parliamentary committee has approved a bill requiring the government to design nuclear-powered merchant ships and provide them with nuclear fuel, an Iranian news agency reported Sunday.
The bill appears to be a symbolic gesture to bolster Tehran’s argument that it has a right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes. The West suspects Iran’s nuclear program is aimed at developing weapons technology, a charge Tehran denies.
Nuclear-powered vessels other than warships are rare, and the International Atomic Energy Agency has said in the past that nuclear-powered merchant ships would be uneconomical…
The West has raised concerns that Iran might cite submarine and other nuclear-powered vessel construction as a justification for producing weapons-grade 90 percent enriched uranium.
A nuclear-powered merchant marine ship? Gee, I wonder how much the Somali pirates would get for one of those?
I would not allow an Iranian nuclear-powered ship of any kind anywhere close to U.S. territorial waters. Imagine letting a nuclear reactor melt down in a U.S. harbor. That would bump Three Mile Island, Fukushima and Chernobyl down the list of worst nuclear ‘accidents’. I put ‘accidents’ in quotations because with the Iranians it probably wouldn’t be an accident.
This would just give the Iranians an opportunity to work on nuclear propulsion systems. If successful (and if they have the funding and the resources) they will transform that technology into a warship. Or a submarine.
Or perhaps they won’t do any of this. They may just develop a nuclear weapon under the guise of producing weapons-grade material for ‘peaceful’ purposes. And once they have it they’ll put it in a bomb.
The real question is how long are we going to let the Iranians down this road? Far enough that they can threaten Israel, the U.S. and our friends and allies with a nuclear capability? This is what we worried Saddam Hussein would do if left in power in Iraq. He wanted to stay in power. At any price. So he could oppress his people. And perhaps his neighbors. What’s scarier with the Iranian leadership (NOT the Iranian people) is that their main goal does not appear to be in this life. But in the next. Which means nuclear retaliation and annihilation may not dissuade them. Not if they get to take out their enemies first.
Perhaps the greatest foreign policy failure of the Obama administration was not helping the Iranian people during the Green Revolution following the 2009 Iranian presidential election. It’s particularly sad because we didn’t help these good people but we did help the Muslim Brotherhood rise to power in Egypt. And helped al Qaeda rise to power in Libya. The so-called Arab Spring. Which was more about the rise of Islamism than the rise of Democracy. While we did nothing to support a real Democracy movement (the Green Revolution) in Iran. One shudders to think of the consequences of this foreign policy blunder. Especially now that the Iranians are aggressively pursuing a nuclear program.
