Study shows that Women are Getting Fat because they’re Slacking Off on the Housework

Talk about your war on women.  Here’s a salvo from the New York Times.  That reported on a study that said today’s women are fat because they don’t spend enough time cleaning, cooking, and doing laundry (see Does Less Housework Really Equal a Larger Waistline? by Lylah M. Alphonse posted 2/28/2013 on Yahoo! Shine).

A New York Times article about a study that links U.S. women’s expanding waistlines to the fact that they do less housework has sparked a wave of outrage online, where readers decried the piece for being sexist.

“Attn ladies, maybe if you put a little more time into housework you wouldn’t be so fat,” tweeted Taylor Lorenz as she shared the article, entitled “What Housework Has to Do With Waistlines.”

“Are you kidding? You just completely discredited yourselves as a newspaper,” commented Agnes Shugardt on the New York Times Facebook page. (Danielle Rhoads-Ha, director of communications for the New York Times, told Yahoo! Shine that since the outcry is over the study, and not the way the article was written or reported, the newspaper had no comment on it.)

It’s tempting to use a sexist expression here for comic relief.  But we shan’t.

Once upon a time women were angry that men didn’t appreciate how hard housework is.  Which it is.  And probably was the reason why women outlived men for so many years.  For as men got softer working office jobs women continued to work hard.  And remained strong.  So women were justifiably angry when men dismissed housework as simply resting on the couch eating bonbons while watching daytime television.  With a little dusting thrown in.  Now women are mad because their careers are not perceived as physically demanding as doing fulltime housework.  Which they aren’t.  For anyone given the choice would opt to work in the office during the day instead of doing housework.  For housework is backbreaking thankless work.  Few appreciate a clean toilet enough to keep it clean.  Unless you’re the one that cleans it.  But one thing certain about housework is that it burns the calories.  Better than any gym membership can.

Women, even ones who manage their homes instead of big businesses, are also less physically active now than they used to be. In 1965, women spent an average of 25.7 hours each week cleaning, cooking, and doing laundry. By 2010, women were spending an average of 13.3 hours each week on housework. Like their male counterparts, women who worked outside of the home are spending far more time sitting down in front a screen at the office these days, but Archer and his team were surprised to find that even women who stayed home were spending more time watching TV—16.5 hours per week in 2010, up from about eight hours a week in 1965…

Given the way technology has changed housework, it’s unlikely that more housework would make much a difference for either gender, though. Old-fashioned vacuum cleaners were clunky and hard to push, requiring a lot more physical energy to use than today’s lightweight models, and bending and stretching to hang laundry on a line in the 1960s burned more calories than transferring a load from the washer to the dryer.

Both men and women are getting softer these days.  Thanks to a higher standard of living.  And quality appliances at affordable prices.  Pity there’s a downside to all this convenience.  It’s putting us in an early grave.

Yes, women were healthier before they left the house to pursue a career.  And slimmer.  As were men.  If you want to see just how skinny we were watch an old movie.  Where all the leading men were skinny.  And borderline malnourished.  Or sit in an old theater.  The seating is pretty tight these days.  For we were a lot skinnier in the old days.  Not only gut-wise.  But shoulder-wise, too.  For if you sit in a theater that was built close to a hundred years ago you’ll be sitting with your shoulders pressing into the shoulders on either side of you.

We’re eating more and exercising less.  This is why our waistlines are expanding.  Especially for women.  For stay-at-home moms run a never ending marathon.  When they give that up to pursue a career they have to join a health club to make up for the exercise they once got for free.  Which they will eventually quit.  As most people do.  Because after a hard day at the office the last thing anyone wants to do is exercise.  They just want to go home and plop down in front of the television.  With a relaxing adult beverage.  Also not good for the waistline.

Politics 101

When Old Enough not to Violate Child-Labor Laws we worked After School at the Local Hardware Store or Supermarket

Once upon a time one of our first jobs was delivering newspapers.  We used to call these people paperboys.  Then girls said they wanted to earn money, too.  We called them papergirls.  Boys and girls would fill up a bag full of newspapers slung on their bike and start peddling through the neighborhood.  Raising a little spending money while they still were in school.  They didn’t make much.  They couldn’t keep doing this as a career and raise a family.  But they made a lot of money for a 14-year old kid.

When these kids grew old enough to get a job without violating child-labor laws they went to work after school at the local hardware store or bagged groceries at the supermarket.  Or worked at McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Baskin Robbins, Big Boy, etc.  During the summer they flocked to vacation areas and worked in the tourist economy.  Anxious to earn money to put gas into their cars.  Or go to the mall.  Again, they weren’t making big bucks.  Nothing that they could raise a family on.  But they earned more than delivering papers.  And were able to buy the things that were important to them.

Once we graduated high school some got jobs at factories.  Some went into the skilled trades.  While some went on to college.  Working as waitresses to pay their way.  Pressing clothes at a dry cleaner.  Working as a short order cook.  Or working their summers in construction.  As well as working some odd jobs on campus between classes.  Saving every penny to pay for their books.  Room and board.  Even their tuition.  While still finding time to study.  These kids worked very hard between their studies and their jobs.  Using their earnings to pay their bills.  While leaving them less spending money to have fun with than those paperboys and papergirls had.  Who weren’t paying for books, room & board and tuition.

The American Dream is Being Free to Work Hard and Sacrifice to make a Better Life

These jobs we worked during our high school and college years were entry level jobs for the unskilled.  Which is why they didn’t pay much.  To reflect that skill level.  But they gave us job experience.  And a little spending money.  Which was fine during those years because our spending needs were modest.  Besides, these jobs weren’t our careers.  They were just stopping points on our career paths.  Where we learned some important job skills (be on time, work hard, how to work with other people, that the customer is always right, etc.) that helped us in our next jobs.  And we moved from job to job.  Gaining skills.  And income.  Until we could afford to raise a family.

Many started college after working for awhile.  Or returned to college.  Taking a couple of classes at night after work.  To gain additional skills to advance in the company.  Or to gain the skills to make a career change.  So they could earn more money.  To afford more things in life.  Like a better home.  In a better neighborhood with better schools for their children.  Living the American Dream.  Having whatever they want simply by working extra hard to have it.  Which they could if they chose to put in the effort to increase their value in the market place.  Which has always been the way to achieve our goals.  Working hard and sacrificing to make a better life.  Which is what brings others to our shores.  To be free to live the American Dream.

Immigrants coming to this country often took menial jobs.  Such as sweeping the floor in a factory.  Saving every penny.  Improving their language skills.  If they needed to increase their language skills.  Working hard.  And when they acquired some skills they moved up.  Earning enough to bring their wives over from the old country.  Who also started working a menial job upon their arrival.  To help earn enough money to buy a house to raise a family in.  The husband’s hard work took him further up in the company.  Or he set off on his own.  Going into business for himself.  Working even longer hours to provide for his family.  Living out the American Dream.  Working hard so their children can have a better life.

In the US People can go from being Poor to Middle Class to the 1% back to Middle Class and even back to Poor

Sara Blakely tried to be a lawyer but couldn’t pass the LSAT law exam.  She spent some time as a ride greeter at Disney World.  After that she tried selling fax machines door-to-door.  Seeing a lot of doors slammed in her face.  Not exactly the life she dreamed of.  And if that wasn’t bad enough there was something else that bothered her.  The way she looked in white pants from behind.  And set out to do something about it.  Starting with $5,000 Sara Blakely created Spanx.  A company selling slimming bodywear that she invented.  And about a decade later Spanx is now worth $1 billion.  Pleasing some 6 million women.  Who helped her give some $20 million to charity.

Currently in America there is a war on the rich and successful.  Those on the Left are attacking those with money.  Those who have worked hard and have earned wealth.  Claiming that they got their wealth unfairly.  And aren’t paying their fair share in taxes.  That contemptible 1%.  Those people they rile up the masses to hate.  As if this 1% is a monolithic permanent upper class.  As if every millionaire today has always been a millionaire.  As if none of them ever failed the LSAT law exam.  Worked as a greeter at Disney World.  Or sold fax machines door-to-door.

But the 1% is not a permanent monolithic upper class.  As people like Sara Blakely prove.  And the others like her who have worked hard.  Starting with little more than an idea.  And a few years of savings.  We call it upward mobility.  Those in the 1% were likely at different income levels throughout their lives.  Starting out poor.  Working their way up to middle class.  And the lucky few like Sara Blakely breaking into the 1%.  Who earned every dime she has.  And just as people can work hard to rise up to the 1% they can just as easily fall from the 1%.  For there are no monolithic classes in the United States.  Anyone can succeed here.  And anyone can fail.  So here people can go from being poor to middle class to the 1% back to middle class and even back to poor.  Because in America you can live the American Dream.  Where you’re free to do anything you want to try.  You can work hard to succeed.  And you can fail trying.  But the key is this.  Here you can try.  Which is a lot more than people in many parts of the world can ever hope to do.

FT140: “There’s more to women than their vaginas.” —Old Pithy

Fundamental Truth

The Republicans don’t Treat Women like the Taliban Treats Women despite what the Left Says

Is there a war on women?  You would think so if you listen to the Democrats.  Who are shouting from the rooftops that the Republicans are waging a war on women.  That they want to impose nothing less than Sharia Law when it comes to women.  To prevent women from having abortions.  To take away their birth control.  To take away their cancer screening.  Forcing women to give up their careers.  And forcing them into motherhood.  Keeping them barefoot and pregnant.  Doing nothing but having babies and raising kids.  Which according to the Left is worse than 18th century slavery.  Even though women with careers are still having families later in their lives.  Because despite motherhood being worse than 18th century slavery a lot of women still want to raise a family.

Of course this Republican war on women is nonsense.  For they said the same things during the 2 election cycles of George W. bush.  The one election cycle of George H.W. Bush.  The 2 election cycles of Ronald Reagan.  During these 20 years of Republican administrations what the Left warned about never came to be.  There was no Sharia Law imposed on women.  Women were as free as they ever were.  There were no morality police.  There was still porn, strip clubs and prostitution during these years.  Birth control was still available.  Abortion, too.  And, yes, even cancer screening.   Those of us with mothers, wives, sisters and daughters who entered these Republican times emerged from these Republican times with their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters.  For the Republicans didn’t treat women like the Taliban treats women.  Despite what the Left says.

Those old enough to remember previous election cycles have heard this war on women rhetoric so often that it becomes white noise that we just tune out.  We don’t take it seriously.  We take it for what it is.  Subterfuge.  The Left’s policies have a record of failure.  Especially their Keynesian economic policies.  Which gave us the stagflation of the Seventies.  The subprime mortgage crisis.  And the Great Recession.  For expansionary monetary policies extend economic booms allowing prices to rise higher than the market would have them.  So the recessions that follow to correct these prices are longer and more painful.  As those prices have a lot farther to fall.  So when your policies have a history of failure it is hard to run on those policies.  So you attack your opponents.  And not their policies.  Because they know conservative policies are better than theirs.

Because of Birth Control and Abortion Men don’t have to Bother with Romance

So who does this strategy work on?  Young people.  People without any real responsibilities yet.  Young women empowering themselves by having sex if they choose to have sex.  And the young men having sex with them.  The women want birth control to be able to have sex without getting pregnant.  And they want access to abortion.  Just in case that birth control doesn’t work.  Or if they surrender to their passions without taking any precautions.  While the young men are always for anything that increases their chances of having sex with the ladies.  So, yes, these young women may lead with their vaginas when it comes to politics.  And vote Democrat just because of their reproductive rights.  For it may be the only thing important in their lives.  As women’s reproductive rights empower women.  It lets them escape the tyranny of motherhood that is little different than 18th century slavery.  It lets them to proudly take control of their sexuality.  At any time they choose.  Whenever they please.  But it’s a different story with men.

Women don’t like men objectifying them.  Which is why they get exasperated.  And say things like, “My eyes are up here.”  Or, “Keep it holstered, buddy.”  As men have only one thing on their mind.  The empowerment of women.  That is, sex.  A lot of women are put off by the constant sexual advances of men.  They decry that all they want is sex.  That they don’t want to talk to them.  To get to know them as a person.  To take long walks on a beach.  Go ballroom dancing.  To take them to the ballet.  To simply hold hands.  Or discuss a book that changed their lives.  Men are just not interested in anything but getting them into bed.  They hit on the pretty ladies in the office.  Making some women uncomfortable.  Some even filing complaints because their behavior makes a hostile workplace.  So women can empower themselves with birth control and access to abortion so they can fully explore their sexuality whenever they want without any shame but when men think about sex they’re just a bunch of dirty old men and perverts.

So reproductive rights kind of send mixed messages to men and women.  It means women can be more sexually active.  Empowering them to explore their sexuality.  Freely and without shame.  Something men understand.  Which leads to them objectifying women.  Because with birth control and abortion men don’t have to bother with romance.  Or wait for marriage.  Because with birth control and abortion men just expect women to have sex without the bother of romance.  Just like Charlie Harper on Two and Half Men.  A character his female company grew to hate.  As shown in the opening of the new season after they fired Charlie Sheen.  Where many of his past lady friends attending his funeral lamented the closed-casket ceremony.  Because they couldn’t spit in Charlie’s face.  Funny.  Because a lot of women feel that way about men like Charlie Harper.  Men who enjoy nothing more than the empowerment of women.

Those on the Right don’t believe Women are One Dimensional

So this is what women are to those on the Left.  Vaginas.  One dimensional people.  Who care about nothing but birth control and abortion.  Which is rather sexist.  The reason why the Left wants to provide women with birth control and abortion is so they can have careers like men.  While still having a good time like men.  Who have careers.  And enjoy casual sex.

But while these men can also be interested in the economy, the unemployment rate, interest rates, the inflation rate, the federal deficit, the federal debt, the impact of the federal debt on their children, national security, property taxes, income taxes, the cost of gasoline, food prices, heating costs, their kids’ public schools, etc., women cannot.  No, they can have no other interests but their reproductive rights.  At least according to those on the Left.  Something those on the Right find offensive.  As they’re talking about our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters.

Those on the Right don’t believe women are one dimensional.  They believe that there’s more to women than their vaginas.  We don’t believe those things men can be interested in are too complex for women.  For we believe women can be just as smart as men.  Even smarter.  And they can actually be interested in something other than their vaginas.

According to a New Study only when Women Satisfy their Sexual Desires can they Earn Higher Wages

Posted by PITHOCRATES - April 1st, 2012

Week in Review

Apparently women need sex just as much as men say they do.  At least according to a new study showing a direct link between a woman’s earnings potential with the amount of sex she is able to have.  That is, birth control pills have been responsible for closing the income gap between men and women (see Birth-control pill access contributed to women’s wage increases, study says by Elizabeth Flock posted 3/30/2012 on The Washington Post).

New research has found that the early availability of the birth control pill is responsible for about a third of women’s wage increases relative to men since the 1960’s, Live Science reports…

“As the pill provided younger women the expectation of greater control over childbearing, women invested more in their human capital and careers,” study researcher and University of Michigan economist Martha Bailey said in a statement, according to Live Science.

Using data from a longitudinal study of women, Bailey and her colleagues found that there was a crucial difference for women who lived in states where women could get the pill without parental permission at age 18, and states where the age was 21.

Women in early-access states, researchers said, no longer had to choose at 18 between investing in their career or investing in a husband. They could do both, without the fear of pregnancy…

By the 1980s and 90s, the women who had early access to the pill were making 8 percent more each year than those who didn’t, according to the study.

And they say men have too much sex on the mind.  So the only thing that had been holding women back all these years from higher earnings was their out of control sex drive?  Interesting.  A sex drive that was so intense that before birth control pills the only choice a woman had was to get married and start having babies to satisfy her burning sexual desires.  But the birth control pill freed her from that.  Now she could do both.  Have a career.  And satiate that all but insatiable sexual appetite of hers.  By having lots of sex.  Without the “fear of pregnancy.”  At least, according to this study.

Really?  By that logic then only men who were getting regular sex have ever earned a decent living.  Funny, as I’ve worked with a lot of men who weren’t getting any.  Nerds.  Geeks.  The beautiful only on the inside.  The short, balding fat guys.  These guys weren’t tearing it up every weekend.  No.  They played video games.  Read comic books.  Went to topless bars.  Or watched Internet porn.  The kinds of things that make women say, “Eew.”  The same women these guys hoped to date.  But never did.  So, no, these guys weren’t getting any.  Yet they were making a pretty decent living.

Women can do, and have done, what these guys have done.  Not have sex.  And still have productive careers.  So I’m not buying that degrading conclusion that women are slaves to their sexual desires.  And can only earn a decent living when they can have on-demand sex.  Perhaps a more reasonable explanation for the shrinking of the earning disparity is this.  Women began earning more when they were forced to work longer before starting their families.  Because of the high cost of raising a family.  And were forced back to work soon after having children because of the need for two incomes to raise a family.  It fits the data.  For LBJ’s Great Society increased taxes greatly in the Seventies.  And the inflation of the Seventies made everything cost more.  Making paychecks not buy as much as they once did.  Hence the need for two incomes to raise a family.  Which has kept women in the workforce longer than they wished.  To afford the families they wanted to raise.  And because they worked longer they began to earn more.
