High School Graduation Rates, Out-of-Wedlock Births and Median Family Income

 Politics 101

(Originally published July 25th, 2013)

Colleges use Affirmative Action to Increase Diversity because only 66.1% of Blacks Graduate from High School

Interest rates recently went up for student loans.  Something that greatly angered the left.  Blaming the Republicans for playing politics with our children’s future.  For a college education is the pathway to a good, high-paying job.  A college education is so critical to a person’s future success that everyone should have access to a low-cost student loan.  And because a college education is so important this should not be a privilege of the rich.  Or whites.  Colleges should use affirmative action to ensure a diversity of students.  Because our differences, they say, make us better.

Yes, a college degree is important.  And the data backs this up.  The median family income in 2009 for someone with a bachelor’s degree was $90,530 (see Table 698. Money Income of Families—Distribution by Family Characteristics and Income Level: 2009 posted on census.gov).  Those with only a high school diploma earned $48,637.  While those who didn’t graduate from high school only earned $31,119.  So clearly a college degree is the pathway to a good, high-paying job.  Of course, to get that college degree you first have to enroll into college.  And to do that you need to graduate from high school.  So graduating from high school, then, is the gateway to those good, high-paying jobs.  Which, as it turns out, is the reason we need affirmative action to ensure that diversity of students.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (see National public high school graduation rate at a four-decade high by Lyndsey Layton posted 1/22/2013 on The Washington Post), not everyone is graduating from high school at the same rate.  Looking at the breakout for three races we find that Asians are graduating 93% of the time.  Whites are graduating 83% of the time.  While blacks are graduating only 66.1% of the time.  Which explains the need of affirmative action admission policies to achieve diversity at our colleges and universities.  For when blacks are only 13% of the population and only 66.1% of them are graduating from high school you’re not going to get a lot of diversity without affirmative action.

Married People with College Degrees have Higher Median Family Incomes than Unmarried High School Dropouts

Going back to the Census data we can see a correlation between these high school graduation rates and median family income.  Those with the highest graduation rate (Asians) earned $75,027.  Those with the next highest graduation rate (whites) earned $62,545.  While those with the lowest graduation rate (blacks) earned $38,409.  Which clearly shows that high school graduates earn more than high school dropouts.  And because Asians and whites have higher high school graduation rates than blacks they have higher median family incomes than blacks.

So we know that to earn a decent income you need a college degree.  And to get that you need a high school diploma.  But is there anything else that has a big influence on a family’s median income?  As it turns out, yes.  Going back to the Census data we see that a family with a married couple earned $71,627.  A male householder with no spouse present earned $41,501.  While a female householder with no spouse present earned only $29,770.

If you want to earn a lot of money, then, the way is clear.  Graduate from high school.  Go on to college and earn a degree.  Then settle down.  Get married.  And raise a family.  A common thread at every stage of this pathway is personal discipline.  Staying in and studying instead of going out and partying.  And once you start working start a family.  For the heavy responsibility of raising children keeps people from staying up late and partying with friends.  Get’s them to work on time in the morning.  And drives them to advance in their careers to provide more for their families.  Things employers like in employees.  Making it easier for these people to climb the career ladder.

The People with the Highest Median Family Income also have the Lowest Out-of-Wedlock Births

A child growing up in a household with a married couple where at least one has a college degree will probably learn the values of his or her parents.  To work hard.  Exercise self-discipline.  And work towards a long-term goal.  Don’t take the easy way.  Don’t take the fun way.  Make sacrifices now that will help you attain your long-term goals.  And it starts with studying and doing your homework.  For a high school diploma is only the first bridge to cross of many to come.  And if you don’t get across that first bridge you will advance no further down the road towards a good, high-paying job.

The family structure, then, is key.  A child needs to learn the values that will let him or her exceed in life.  And a married couple provides twice the parenting of a single-parent household.  And doubles the earnings potential.  By allowing one parent to pursue a full-time career.  Which leads to greater income.  Without having to sacrifice parenting time.  Or risk burning out from trying to do everything alone.  And the numbers prove this.  According to Census data (see Social and Economic Characteristics of Currently Unmarried Women With a Recent Birth: 2011 posted on census.gov), the number of children being born out-of-wedlock differ greatly across the above three racial groups.  Asians have the lowest out-of-wedlock births at 11.3%.  While whites come in at 29.2%.  And blacks come in at 67.8%.

The people with the highest median family income also have the lowest out-of-wedlock births.  Confirming that the path towards a high-paying job is a high school diploma.  A college education.  Being careful NOT to have any children until you’re married.  And after you graduate from college and establish a career get married and raise a family.  In other words, personal discipline.  Sacrificing short-term fun.  For long-term success.  Suggesting the reason why blacks earn a lower family median income than most is because of their high out-of-wedlock birthrate.  Young black women having children before they graduate from high school.  Which prevents them from crossing that first bridge on the road towards a good, high-paying job.  Making her life more difficult.  And giving her children a distinct disadvantage.  At least, based on the Census data.

The High Cost of Living in Toronto forces Both Parents to work and forces their Children into Daycare

Posted by PITHOCRATES - November 24th, 2013

Week in Review

Once upon a time we worked so we could raise our families.  Now we find someone to raise our children so we can work (see Daycare in Toronto: ‘Parent summit’ participants tell of vastly different experiences by Marco Chown Oved posted 11/22/2013 on the star).

Diana Tarango is worried. Her 4-year-old daughter is in all-day kindergarten, but because she can’t find before- and after-school care, she can’t go back to work.

Perry Wong and Nalini Nankoo are frustrated. They have been looking for a daycare space for their 2-year-old son and have put down non-refundable deposits to get on the waiting list at a half-dozen daycares. They can’t afford to keep wasting money, and their son still doesn’t have a space.

Cynthia Zhu and Kenny Ji couldn’t be happier. They’ve been in Canada for less than a year and they’ve got both their kids in subsidized daycare spots near their home.

These stories show how ineffective our patchwork daycare system is, said Councillor Shelley Carroll.

“Child care is an issue that affects us all in different ways,” she said. “That’s why we need these meetings and why we need to get people talking across generations, too.”

Parents, grandparents and even childless adults are all affected by the high cost of daycare, said Carroll, and a better system won’t just be better for families with young children, it will be good for the economy as well.

There are 57,000 daycare spaces in Toronto, only enough for 21 per cent of the city’s children under 12. The city subsidizes 24,264 of those spaces, which only covers about 28 per cent of children in low-income families.

Making matters worse, the wait-list for a subsidized spot is more than 18,500 people long…

Tarango, newly arrived from Hungary, looked into putting her younger son into daycare, but can’t believe how much it would cost.

“I was amazed when I asked the price: $1,500 per kid (per month)!” she said. “In Hungary, after one and a half years, everything is free. The daycare even provides food free, too.”

If 21% of the total number of children under 12 equals 57,000 then the total number of children under 12 in Toronto equals 271,429 (57,000/0.21).  The total number of children who need daycare is 75,500 (57,000+18,500).   Subtracting this number from the total number of children under 12 equals 195,929 (271,429-75,500).  So the percentage of children under 12 who are raised in Toronto without daycare equals 72.2% (195,929/271,429).  In other words, the vast majority of children of daycare age DON’T use daycare.  Which is a good thing.  And one would hope that’s because they have a stay-at-home parent raising their child in a loving household.  Instead of dumping these inconvenient pains in the ass at daycare so they can do something more rewarding than parenting.

There may be many reasons why parents need daycare for their children.  Single mothers may need daycare so they can work.  There could be a married parent that prizes a career over raising children and prefers to work instead of being a stay-at-home parent.  But perhaps the greatest reason is that parents can’t raise a family on a single income because of high taxes.  Some of which are going to subsidize daycare at $1,500 per child per month.  Which creates a death spiral for daycare.

Daycare isn’t cheap.  So it takes a lot of tax dollars to subsidize.  The high unmet demand for daycare spaces requires more tax dollars to subsidize.  Which require higher tax rates.  Leaving people with less take-home pay.  Making it more difficult for parents to raise a family on a single income.  Requiring more two-income households.  And a greater demand for daycare.  Requiring more tax dollars.  And higher tax rates.  Leaving families with less take-home pay.  And so on.

The best way to provide for these children?  Tax cuts.  Allowing families to keep more of their take-home pay.  So much that they can raise a family on a single income.  Like they used to do.  Before the welfare state.  That provided cradle-to–grave benefits.  Which, ironically, leaves working people with less.  And forces their children to spend more time growing up with strangers.  And less time with their parents.

The High Taxation of the Welfare State leads to Substandard Daycare

Posted by PITHOCRATES - September 22nd, 2013

Week in Review

Governments everywhere on the left want state-funded daycare.  As they want state-funded everything.  But state-funded daycare is especially insidious.  Many parents can’t raise their families on a single income.  Because of high taxation in an advanced economy with a nanny state.  Which has to keep raising tax rates and adding new taxes to pay for the expanding welfare state.  Which is why both parents have to work.  And the left’s solution to this is even more taxation to pay for state-funded daycare.  When if they just shrunk the size of the welfare state parents could raise their children on a single income.  And fewer things like this would happen (see Listeria found in Toronto daycare where child died posted 9/2/2013 on CBC News).

Food in the kitchen of a private daycare north of Toronto where a two-year-old girl died in July tested positive for the potentially deadly food bacteria listeria, according to an inspector’s report.

The York Region Public Health inspection also found expired food in the refrigerator and freezer and other sanitation problems at the daycare located at 343 Yellowood Circle where two year old Eva Ravikovich died on July 8.

A day after Ravikovich’s death, inspectors arrived to find inadequate dishwashing capacity, unsanitized toys and improperly stored food…

Education Minister Liz Sandals said in July that officials received three complaints in late 2012 about the number of children being monitored at the Vaughan facility.

Ministry officials only followed up on one of the complaints with a site inspection, Sandals said, calling the lack of action “unacceptable.”

Calver said the province’s failure to act decisively on previous complaints puts children at risk…

Don Giesbrecht, chief executive of Canadian Child Care Federation, said that while many unlicensed private daycares fill a need for working parents, there is little government oversight into how they operate.

Giesbrecht also said the demand for daycare spaces in Canada far outstrips supply. He added there are 900,000 licensed daycare spaces in Canada but three million children with parents in the workforce.

What’s also insidious about state-funded daycare is the true reason why the state wants to provide this.  To help mothers return to work as quickly after child birth as possible. Why?  Because a stay-at-home mother is not earning income that they can tax.  Which is why they want these women to return to the workforce as quickly as possible.  The children will be better off with a stay-at-home parent.  But the state isn’t interested in children.  They’re interested in taxpayers.

Now there are some women who want to return to work to continue their career.  As the left has told them that a career is what defines a woman.  Not providing the best possible home for a child to grow up in.  One with a stay-at-home parent that loves his or her child.  And doesn’t look at him or her as yet another annoying task to do like taking out the garbage.  Or doing the laundry.  If you’re relieved to drop your kid off at daycare so you can do what you love best then why did you ever become a parent?

Of course if we based our decisions on what was best for our children instead of what was best for us there would be no daycare.  We would wait until we were married and one spouse was established in a career before even having children.  But even that is not possible for everyone due to the high taxation of the welfare state.  Which is the real problem here.  This is why there is substandard daycare.  Because the government creates such a high demand for daycare with their high taxation to support the welfare state.  For one parent just can’t earn enough these days to raise a family.

A Nice Boss and an Easy Life will make you Soft and Fill you with Apathy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - September 14th, 2013

Week in Review

The movie Full Metal Jacket made R. Lee Ermey a star.  Who, you may ask?  Gunnery Sergeant Hartman.  Oh, that guy, you say.  Yes, he was a real ass.  A mean, callous, heartless bastard.  But he was good.  He trained his Marines so hard and so well that they would rather face the enemy on the field of battle than train with him.  That’s why the Marines are so good at what they do.  Their training is so intense and their DIs are so good that actual combat can be easier than training.  Which is how you want to train your Marines because combat is a stressful, exhausting, frightening, horrific hell on earth.  And you want to send people into combat who already have been to hell.  So they can take whatever the enemy throws at them.

Life is hard.  It’s not as hard as combat.  But it can overwhelm you at times.  And if you grew up in a pampered cocoon life will chew you up and spit you out.  America’s military is the best in the world.  But America has grown soft.  Because we pamper our kids today.  Give them participation trophies instead of letting them win and lose.  To know the thrill of victory.  And the agony of defeat.  To borrow the opening from the Wide World of Sports.  Could the current generation produce the citizen soldiers that took out Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany?  Could we even pry them away from their smartphones long enough to go through basic training?  Probably not.

Making life easy is not good.  For it makes us weak.  That’s why we have the expression ‘That which does not kill us makes us stronger’.  Courtesy of Friedrich Nietzsche.  The more arduous the journey the more we learn and stronger we grow.  That’s why Gunnery Sergeant Hartman was such a mean, callous, heartless bastard.  To give his Marines the best chance of survival.  Because that journey with him was so arduous.  If you want to bring the best out of someone you can’t make life easy for that person.  Whether it be going to combat.  Or building a career (see Your Nice Boss May Be Killing Your Career by Greg McKeown posted 9/4/2013 on the Harvard Business Review).

Over a twelve-month period I have gathered data from 1,000 managers about their experiences at over 100 companies including Apple, Cisco, HP, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Novel, and Symantec. I wanted to understand the conditions under which people did the very best work of their careers. What I expected to find were examples of over managing, controlling, tyrannical managers. About half of the participants confirmed this assumption. The other half surprised me: what they described were managers who were nice but weak.

I once spent two days running a strategy session with just such an executive. He spoke with a soft, quiet voice. He never interrupted anyone when they were speaking. When he walked into the meeting he had a “nice” word for everyone. Every time the team became “positively frustrated” and ready to make the change necessary to get to the next level he would stand up and say sweetly, “Oh, I just wanted to remind you all of how far we have come.” And after a few more sentences the spark of aspiration was gone from the room. He unintentionally signaled the status quo was plenty good enough. There was no need to try harder or change how things were going. He reminded me of what Jim Hacker (the fictional politician in the English cult classic “Yes, Minister“) said to his bureaucratic colleague, “You really are a wet blanket, Humphrey, you just go around stirring up apathy.”

Apathy.  Yes, that’s what you get when work (and life) gets too easy.  When life gets too easy people get lethargic.  They get soft.  And become a less likely candidate for a high-stressed position that will help them up the corporate ladder.  And it is the same for the welfare state.

Everything that weakens an employee because work is too easy is true when we make a person’s life too easy with a generous welfare state.  They get lethargic.  Soft.  And fill with apathy.  Which is why when you make welfare too comfortable people are less willing to get off of welfare.  And when they do they parallel what a worker gets with a nice boss.  The worker gets a dead-end career.  While the person on welfare gets a dead-end life.

Men tend to get Paid More than Women because of the High Cost of Maternity Leave

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 31st, 2013

Week in Review

There was a movie in 1985 called Head Office.  It lampooned corporate America.  In it there was this one character who was dying from heart disease or something.  But he refused to take time off from work.  Because if he did someone else would get his job.  He’d rather take a chance on dying than risk losing his job.  Because the corporate world was that cutthroat.  There was always someone waiting in the wings to take your job.  Which is why you never wanted to miss work.  Because if someone else did your job for you when you were away and they did it better than you they might just keep your job.  Leaving you to start your corporate career all over again.  And often with less pay and fewer benefits.

That’s the way it used to be.  Today, it’s a bit different.  Especially if you’re a woman (see As a boss, maternity leave is a nightmare for employers by Josephine Fairley posted 8/28/2013 on The Telegraph).

There’s no denying, of course, that for companies – especially really small companies – maternity leave presents challenges. Suddenly, a key team member isn’t there. And even more challengingly, there’s no way to know if she’s coming back – which makes it hard to plan for the future…

Right now, it isn’t legal to ask a pregnant woman whether she’s even thinking of coming back to work. There’s no imperative for her proactively to tell you proactively – never mind before the birth, but right up to the time that the 52 weeks of maternity leave are up. And my observation is that’s partly what makes it so hard to plan, and accommodate, a woman who’s on maternity leave…

I know several women who’ve returned to work after a few months, never mind a year of maternity leave, feeling like they’d landed on Mars because so much had changed while they were away.

52 weeks of maternity leave?  And they don’t have to say whether they’re coming back to work?  The boss can come in one day and find a key employee will leave for an extended absence in 6 months time?  And not know if she will ever return to work?

So they have to hire someone temporarily.  Who they will have to let go if she comes back from maternity leave.  Even if this temporary person turns out to be better in that position.  So a person that they hired and trained so well that they are better than the person they filled in for must lose his or her job.  Someone who may have taken that position because they didn’t expect that person to return from maternity leave.  And because it was the best job available at the time they took that chance.  Only to find the year they invested there was a year out of their life that they could have spent somewhere else.  Building a career where their hard work was rewarded.  Then spend time and resources training the woman returning from maternity leave.  So she can understand all the changes that happened in her absence.

This is why men tend to get paid more when they compare salaries.  First of all, with a lot of women taking maternity leave it does bring down the women’s average income when they take a year or two of income earning years out of their career.  And secondly, who do you think an employer will want to hire?  Someone that they have to accommodate for up to a year in maternity leave?  Or someone that isn’t going to walk in and say “I’m going to have a baby in 6 months”?  If they are working on a 2 year project they don’t want to worry about a key team member leaving in the middle of it.  It may be unfair.  But men can’t get pregnant.  They can do a lot of stupid things to ruin a big project just as women can.  But women have that one other variable.  That a business owner can’t have a contingency for.  What are they going to do?  Have two people doing the job of one in case one of them goes on maternity leave?  What if it’s two women and they go on maternity leave at the same time?  Do you have to make sure that one of the two people doing the job of one person is a man?  So he will always be available if the woman goes on maternity leave?  Of course, you know where that will take you.  Why not just hire a man and have one person do the job of one person?  And remove the need for any contingency in the first place?

Business owners hate uncertainty.  Pregnancy creates uncertainty.  This isn’t a man versus a woman issue.  A battle of the sexes.  For women own businesses, too.  And hate uncertainty just as any other business owner.  Some may make a stand for women in the workplace.  Hire women into key positions then deal with their maternity leave.  But they, too, would probably prefer hiring a man in some key positions.  So they can just worry about the usual things.  Like losing a key employee who leaves for a better paying job.  Of course if they do they at least can immediately start interviewing a replacement.  Without waiting 52 weeks.

FT183: “Conservatives believe chivalry is not dead while liberals want to destroy the dreams of little girls.” —Old Pithy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 16th, 2013

Fundamental Truth

Liberals help Women delay Living Happily Ever After as Long as Possible

Conservatives believe in customs.  And traditions.  Those things that are tried and true.  Like the institution of marriage.  The foundation of the family.  Where a man and a woman pledge their love to each other.  To have and to hold.  From the day of their wedding forward.  For better.  For worse.  For richer.  For poorer.  In sickness and health.  To love and to cherish.  Till death do they part.  All the while living happily ever after.  As husband and wife.

Conservatives do not believe chivalry is dead.  Conservative men still place women on pedestals.  They stand up when a lady enters the room.  Holds her chair for her.  If it’s raining or cold outside a conservative will give his coat to her.  And open and close the door for her.  A conservative will shield her from danger.  And protect her honor.  Always treating her like a lady.

A liberal feminist woman, on the other hand, will say, “Don’t you dare open that door for me.”  For she is fiercely independent.  And wants nothing to do with chivalry.  She wants to be treated like a man.  Liberals, in fact, want women to have a career first then maybe consider getting married.  Or having children.  And not have the fairytale wedding all girls dream about.  Looking forward to the day when her Prince Charming will come along.  And sweep her off her feet.  No.  Liberals want to kill that dream.  And kill all romance.  Giving women birth control, access to abortion and the morning-after pill so she can avoid living happily ever after as long as possible.

Liberals believe being a Part-Time Mother is Good Enough

Conservatives don’t like high taxes.  Because a generation ago taxes were low enough that most everyone could raise a family on a single income.  But with the rise of the welfare state taxes have steadily risen.  Taking more and more of our paychecks.  Making it difficult for a woman to stay at home and be a full-time mother.  Which is why, today, many women are forced to be part-time mothers.  So they can earn a second income.  So they have enough left over in their paychecks after paying for the welfare state.

The family is the center of the conservative’s world.  Which is why they work hard to establish a career.  And vote to keep the tax bite as small as possible.  So they can afford to buy a house.  And begin raising their family.  With the mother staying home to be a full-time mother.  To give her children the best possible of all childhoods.  Having all of their material needs met.  A nurturing environment.  Created by a loving father and mother.  Who teach their children the customs and traditions that their parents taught them.  And help them with their school work so they get the best possible education.  So they, too, will one day be able to earn enough to raise their own family.

Liberals, though, believe in childcare.  In fact, they want state-funded childcare so women can return to work as soon as possible after having their children.  Leaving part of the raising and nurturing of their children to strangers.  As if children are a burden.  Like cutting the grass.  Something that they can farm out to other people.  As a working mother has better and more important things to do.  Like earning a paycheck.  Which is why liberals want state-funded childcare.  Because they believe being a part-time mother is good enough.  A working mother’s children may disagree with that.  But liberals are old-fashioned in this one respect.  They believe children should be seen and not heard.

Liberals encourage Women to stay Strong, Independent and Alone

Conservative policies tend to favor families.  They promote families.  While liberal policies make the family obsolete.  By trying to make husbands and fathers obsolete.  Liberal policies allow a woman to build a career instead of a family.  Birth control, access to abortion and the morning-after pill allow her to engage in consequence-free sex.  Liberal policies enable so many women to give it away for free that men see no reason to marry them.  Women earn their own money.  And with no children there’s no need for a woman to get married.  So she can stay strong and independent.  And alone.

Of course, today, there are a lot of women starting their families in their forties.  As they’ve discovered they want more than just to be strong, independent and alone.  They want a family.  They want children.  Their own children.  Before it’s too late for them to have children.  As waiting too long physically complicates things both for the mother and the child.  And there can be some emotional issues.  For a young child entering school with a 50-year old mother will be different from other children who have parents in their twenties.  And when they graduate high school their parents will be ‘grandparent’ age.  Perhaps not being there for their children when they start raising their own families.

Conservative policies foster the bonds between parents and children.   And grandchildren.  While liberal polices weaken these bonds.  By encouraging a woman to exchange a career and casual sex for marriage and a family.  Who may later in life discover that she wants to be married and raise a family.  But because she was a devoted follower of devout liberal feminist dogma those things are harder now.  And most likely she will have to do them alone.  As the men these women rejected to pursue their career likely found other women who wanted to get married and raise a family.  And even if those marriages didn’t last happily ever after they probably have grown children from it.  And may not be interested in doing it all over again.  As their children may still be consuming a large percentage of their paycheck.  Especially if they’re going to college.

And yet with every election cycle it is the conservatives that hate women and children.  Not the people that are destroying women’s lives by telling them to forget their silly childhood dreams of meeting prince charming, having the beautiful wedding and raising children.  Instead they should stay strong, independent and alone.  Forcing many women to miss or delay the greatest experience of their lives.  Raising their family.

President Obama increases Joblessness and Poverty with his Policies

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 3rd, 2013

Week in Review

The political left is ruining the country.  Every time they get into power they leave a swath of destruction in their wake.  And we hear the same things over and over again.  The plans these people have to fix the things they’ve destroyed.  We heard Jimmy Carter.  And now we’re hearing the same things from President Obama.  But they’re just empty words.  For if things get worse while you’re in office it’s you.  Not everything else (see Exclusive: 4 in 5 in US face near-poverty, no work by Hope Yen, Associated Press, posted 7/28/2013 on Yahoo! Finance).

Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives, a sign of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream.

Survey data exclusive to The Associated Press points to an increasingly globalized U.S. economy, the widening gap between rich and poor, and the loss of good-paying manufacturing jobs as reasons for the trend.

The findings come as President Barack Obama tries to renew his administration’s emphasis on the economy, saying in recent speeches that his highest priority is to “rebuild ladders of opportunity” and reverse income inequality.

Renew his emphasis on the economy?  To renew something you had to have done something first.  The president is in his 5th year in office.  And all he’s done is implement policies that has discouraged job creation.  Obamacare is causing employers to freeze hiring and push some employees to part time.  Obamacare, then, has increased joblessness.  And forcing people into lower-paying part-time jobs has increased poverty.

Shutting down the oil business in the Gulf of Mexico destroyed good-paying jobs in the oil business.  Refusing to approve the Keystone XL pipeline has prevented the creating of good-paying construction jobs.  And the additional good-paying jobs in the oil business that would have processed this new oil coming to American refineries and out into the distribution network.

The president’s war on coal is shuttering coal mines.  And destroying good-paying jobs in the mining industry.  And moving away from cost-efficient coal-fired power plants has increased the cost of electric power for businesses and households.  Something else to put pressure on hiring.  Leading to more joblessness.  And poverty.

Things have gotten worse during the Obama presidency because of his anti-business policies.  When you have anti-business policies you don’t create an environment for job creation.  Which is the source of all of our problems.  People can’t get a good-paying full-time job because President Obama is destroying them.  And if that wasn’t bad enough, liberal Democrat policies make a bad situation worse.

Marriage rates are in decline across all races, and the number of white mother-headed households living in poverty has risen to the level of black ones.

“It’s time that America comes to understand that many of the nation’s biggest disparities, from education and life expectancy to poverty, are increasingly due to economic class position,” said William Julius Wilson, a Harvard professor who specializes in race and poverty. He noted that despite continuing economic difficulties, minorities have more optimism about the future after Obama’s election, while struggling whites do not…

For the first time since 1975, the number of white single-mother households living in poverty with children surpassed or equaled black ones in the past decade, spurred by job losses and faster rates of out-of-wedlock births among whites. White single-mother families in poverty stood at nearly 1.5 million in 2011, comparable to the number for blacks. Hispanic single-mother families in poverty trailed at 1.2 million.

The political left won’t tell kids to stop having so much sex.  In fact, they’re facilitating it.  By giving free condoms to high school kids.   Making abortion available on demand.  And even providing the morning-after pill to any girl regardless of age without a prescription or parental notification.  Because kids are going to have sex no matter what we say.  A message heard loud and clear by our kids.  Who are having a lot of sex.  Hooking up to satisfy their needs.  Then going on their way.  Seeing no need to get married.  Especially the guys.  Who never had it better.

The enlightened attitude of the political left has made it a veritable smorgasbord out there.  Objectifying women like never before.  Where men look at women as sexual flavors.  And wonder what they feel like tonight.  This is the hookup.  And it isn’t conducive to making long-lasting relationships.  These guys don’t even want to talk to these women.  They want to take care of their business.  And leave.  Returning to their male friends.  Where they can enjoy the things they really like once their sexual needs are satisfied.

This is why marriage rates are declining.  Because with the left’s objectification of women what’s the point of marrying them?  This is the world a girl finds herself in after getting pregnant.  And doesn’t want to get an abortion.  She is on her own.  And there is no faster way to poverty than being a young, single mother.  If she doesn’t graduate from high school or can’t go on to college because she has to raise a baby what chance does she have?  While others are getting an education she is working a job that doesn’t require an education.  When her high school classmates are graduating from college she is still working that same job.  Because she missed out on getting the college education that could have given her a career with a high-paying job.  Instead working a job that requires no advanced education.  The kind that doesn’t pay well.  Because they’re often entry-level.  The kind high school kids work.  And those in college.  Who then quit these jobs to begin the career they went to college for.  But what a single mother can’t do.  Because without that education she doesn’t have that option.

The obvious solution to this problem is for these girls to wait for marriage before having a baby.  When a parent can stay at home with the baby while the other is building a career that lifts them out of the poverty level.  If the left would stop objectifying women people will stop hooking up and get married instead.  To build a career.  And a family.  Instead of just giving in to their base impulses and enjoying the moment.  And living a life of abject poverty.  For like the old saying goes, good things come to those who wait.  And if you wait until marriage before having children life will be so much better than life as a single mother.  As the data shows.

High School Graduation Rates, Out-of-Wedlock Births and Median Family Income

Posted by PITHOCRATES - July 25th, 2013

Politics 101

More Forgotten Children die in Cars but there is no Demand for new Car Legislation

Posted by PITHOCRATES - July 6th, 2013

Week in Review

Whenever a child dies accidentally because of a gun there is another push to pass gun control legislation.  While making derogatory comments about gun owners.  For if it wasn’t for these yahoos putting pressure on their representatives in Congress they would have already done the right thing.  And repealed the Second Amendment.  So there wouldn’t be guns in houses where children can find them.  But it is a little different when children die accidentally in other ways (see Baby boy dies after being left in car in Virginia by Clarence Williams and Martin Weil posted 6/6/2013 on The Washington Post).

An 8-month-old boy died Friday after he was apparently left in his mother’s car while she was at work, Alexandria police said…

Bergin said the mother intended to drop the child off at day care. It was not clear why she did not…

Also on Friday, Baltimore County police said a toddler died after being left in a vehicle in Lansdowne, police said.

A relative was supposed to take 16-month-old Sabriya Towels to a Head Start Center on Friday after picking her up at another location but instead drove to their home in Baltimore, went inside and slept for a few hours, police said.

Police said that about four hours later, the relative, who was not Sabrinya’s parent, went to the Head Start Center to pick up the toddler and realized she was not there. He then ran to his vehicle and found the girl inside…

The Web site Kids and Cars. org said that on average, 38 children die in hot cars each year after being trapped inside.

“Even the best of parents or caregivers can overlook a sleeping baby in a car,” the Web site says.

People who accidentally left a child in a locked car to die are not horrible people like those gun owners.  These people can be “even the best of parents and caregivers.”  While no such sentiments will ever appear about a gun owner.  Even though both may accidentally kill a child.  Horrible things to have to live with.  But is a forgetful person who doesn’t lock away their gun when the grandchildren come to visit any more horrible than a forgetful parent or caregiver who forgets a child in a car?  No.

Is this a commentary on today’s idea of what a woman should be?  Instead of a stay-at-home mom she should have both a career and a family?  As well as an intense schedule that can suck the life out of her?  While making her miss being a part of her children’s childhoods?  Instead farming a good portion of that out to childcare?  Perhaps.  Mothers should be able to enjoy being a mother without feeling guilty for not having a career, too.  For her job as mother is far more important and far more satisfying than any career she could have.  For even movie stars who have lives every woman envies does not feel complete until they become mothers.  And when they do we celebrate their motherhood.  And yet the left will disparage a woman who doesn’t pursue a career.  Choosing instead to be a stay-at-home mother.  As they did during the 2012 debate.  When someone said Ann Romney never had a real job in her life.  Because all she did was raise 5 children.

There are a lot of double standards when it comes to the left.  Whether it is the ‘best of parents or caregivers’ and ‘evil, rotten gun owners’ when it comes to the accidental death of children.  Or working moms and stay-at-home moms when it comes to their idea of a real woman.  Everything the left does has but one purpose.  To advance a political agenda.  Even if it means we place so many burdens on women today that they forget about their children in the back seat of their cars.  At which point they’ll rue forever the day they chose to build a career.

FT156: “Government needs to help us make the right decisions because we can’t…unless we’re a teen girl choosing an abortion.” —Old Pithy

Fundamental Truth

We don’t adapt to Our Environment we adapt our Environment to Our Needs

In the springs birds mate.  The female lays eggs.  She sits on them in the nest to keep them warm.  When they hatch she feeds her babies.  The mother chases away predators that get too close to her babies.  She teaches them to fly.  And then boots them out of the nest.  Where they go off to become adult birds.  Then the mother does it all again next spring.

Birds are very smart at being birds.  And the skills they need a mother can teach her offspring in a few months.  It’s not quite the same with human offspring.  Who receive more parenting than any other animal on the planet.  For humans need about 20 years to reach full size.  And even longer to gain full maturity.  And knowledge.  Taking 12 years of public education.  Then a trade school.  Or college.  And real life experience.  Years of knowledge and experience before they can leave the nest

Birds live in their environment.  And adapt to it.  Whereas humans are far more intelligent.  We’re able to think.  And use tools.  We have grown wiser over time.  Such that we don’t adapt to our environment.  We adapt our environment to our needs.  We mastered fire.  Built shelter.  Made clothing.  We learned how to farm.  And how to domesticate animals.  We created tools.  And built machines.  Simple machines like levers and wheels.  And advanced machines like airplanes and computers.  Advancing our quality of life.  We lived longer.  And healthier.  Things birds haven’t done.  Which is why they can raise their offspring to adulthood in a few months.

At our High School Graduation we Probably Know only Half of what we will Learn in Life

Some people mature quicker.  Some gain knowledge faster than others.  Some people keep learning new knowledge.  While some specialize in one area of knowledge.  Like a skilled trade.  Or medicine.  And while focusing on mastering these areas of knowledge they may spend less time learning other things.  Like history.  Or economics.  It is a complex world.  Where highly learned and skilled people do remarkable things.  But it takes time to learn the knowledge and skills to do these remarkable things.  And there is always more knowledge to learn.  No matter how learned and skilled we become.

There is a learning curve.  We’re born with a blank slate.  We learn a lot when young.  How to eat.  Drink.  Go potty.  Dress ourselves.  Tie our shoes.  Recite the alphabet.  To talk.  To obey.  Learning the consequences of our actions.  Things to help us in school.  Where we learn the three Rs.  Reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic.  And how to think critically.  To solve problems.  To manage a household.  We learn history.  And rudimentary economics.  To help us live in the real world.  After we leave the nest.  Some of us get a job out of high school.  Some go to a trade school.  While others go on to college.  Or serve in the military.  And even after we’ve left the nest we still have a lot to learn.  And lot of experience to gain.  Which is why we go to trade school and college.  And the military.  To keep acquiring knowledge.  If we graphed this learning curve it would look something like this.

Average Knowledge

Note that the learning curve is steep in our youth.  Before school our parents teach us everything they can.  Then we continue our education in school.  By the time we graduate from high school our learning curve begins to flatten out a little.  As we may be settling on a career path.  And focusing on the education for that career.  But even at our high school graduation we probably know only half of what we will learn in life.  Either from further education.  Or real world experience.  Also, few of us acquire all the knowledge we have the potential to learn.  Which is why the learning curve flattens out in the 70% range.  No one can learn everything there is to learn.  But everyone can learn the maximum they have the potential to learn.  Sadly, a lot of this forgone learning is history and economics.  The kind of knowledge that makes a person less susceptible to a politician’s lies.  Explaining why so many bad politicians win elections.  And why they pass so many bad policies into law.

Young Liberals who still have so much to Learn vote as if they Know Everything

The learning curve flattens out in our twenties.  And even more in our thirties.  With our formal education complete we gain knowledge through experience.  And from studying things that interest us.  For our own enjoyment.  Or to help us make better decisions.  We read newspapers.  Watch the news on television.  Listen to AM radio.  In our forties we are well established in our careers.  And have long given up the idealism and childish pursuits of our youth.  As we are raising our own children.  Who are beginning to think they know everything.  Who don’t want to listen to their old and out of touch parents any longer.

By our fifties we have lived a long life.  And have seen a lot.  We’ve heard the same political arguments through the years.  And no longer fall for them.  We come to learn that our parents were right about a lot of things after all.  We become more conservative in our old age.  Because we’ve seen what works.  And what doesn’t.   Often times it’s always the things that are less fun that are best for us.  Of course trying to explain that to our children who know even more after earning a degree from a liberal college is next to impossible.  So we accept that they, too, will have to learn this as they raise their own family.  And get wise with age.  Like we did.

The Left labels conservatives as a bunch of old people living in the past.  Out of touch with the modern world.  Something young liberals want no part of.  So they naturally gravitate towards the Democrat Party.  These young people who still have so much to learn.  Who vote as if they know everything.  The fact that the Democrats win elections based in large part on the youth vote says a lot about the Democrat Party.  For they are the party of the uninformed voter.  Which the Democrat Party acknowledges by expanding the role of government into our private lives.  Because left to our own devices the Left believes that we won’t make good decisions.  Unless, that is, we’re a teenage girl choosing to have an abortion.  Then she is wise and knowledgeable beyond her years.
