Turning People into Potheads is Good for Colorado’s Treasury

Week in Review

First it was alcohol and tobacco.  Getting people hooked on these items to solve all of a state’s funding woes.  Then it was the lottery.  States needed to get their people hooked on gambling to solve all of their school funding needs.  Then it was casino gambling.  Because the lottery alone was taking enough money from the people to solve all of a state’s funding woes.  And now it’s marijuana (see Colorado made $3.5 million in taxes and fees on first month of marijuana sales by Nick Allen posted 3/11/2014 on The Telegraph).

Colorado, the first US state to legalise cannabis for recreational use, made just over $2 million in tax revenue from selling the drug in January, according to its first officially released figures.

The amount was not far behind the $2.7 million the state recouped in excise taxes on alcohol in the same period and is expected to exceed that in subsequent months.

More than $14 million worth of the dug was sold over counters to recreational users in the 30 days after cannabis shops opened on Jan 1…

In Colorado the first $40 million in tax revenue will go towards school construction and Mr Hickenlooper wants additional revenue to be used for projects including anti-drug advertising aimed at children, campaigns against driving under the influence of cannabis, and public health projects.

Another $2 million taken away from the taxpayers.  To add to the $2.7 million from alcohol sales.  On top of what they got from tobacco sales.  And what they got from the lottery.  Each step down this road was supposed to be a cure-all.  But it never was.  For once they got a new tax it wasn’t long before they said they needed yet another new tax.  Because the previous tax just wasn’t adequate to cover their spending.  Which just begs the question.  What are they doing with all of that money?

So we have people dying from lung cancer.  We have people dying from liver disease.  We have people becoming impoverished because they’ve gambled all of their money away.  Now Colorado is going to turn a part of their population into potheads.  Who will suffer the same ailments as tobacco smokers do.  As well as suffering some lost cognitive ability.  And some will end up wards of the state.  Filling hospitals and nursing homes.  Suffering from costly diseases. And yet the state cheers this new money.  And dreams of future revenue as more people pick up this unhealthy and dangerous habit.  Giddy at the thought of every new person lighting a marijuana cigarette for the first time.

The worst thing about the state using these people to fund their out of control spending is the regressive nature of these taxes.  Alcohol, tobacco, the lottery, casino gambling and marijuana hurt the poor the most.  Those who have the least money to spare now have to give more of it to the taxing authority.  The very people these progressive-thinking people are supposed to help.  Who instead use them for their selfish needs.  And don’t care a whit about the lives they destroy.

British Mother-of-Three dies from Cannabis Poisoning

Posted by PITHOCRATES - February 1st, 2014

Week in Review

In the movie Leaving Las Vegas Nicholas Cage’s character, Ben Sanderson, commits suicide by alcohol poisoning.  Cage won the Academy award for his performance.  For his painful, long death was intense.  And painful to watch.  Making death by alcohol wretched to say the least.  For it takes a long time to drink yourself to death.  Unlike death by marijuana (see Mother thought to be first woman in Britain to die from cannabis poisoning by News agencies posted 1/30/2014 on The Telegraph).

A mother-of-three is believed to have become the first woman in Britain to die directly from cannabis poisoning.

Gemma Moss, a 31-year-old churchgoer, collapsed in bed after smoking a cannabis cigarette that led her to have moderate to high levels of the class B drug in her system…

Deaths directly from cannabis are highly unusual. In 2004 a 36-year-old man from Pembrokeshire became the first person in the UK to die from cannabis toxicity…

“Cannabis is know[n] to increase heart rate and blood pressure. Cannabis these days is designed to be much stronger than cannabis used in the sixties to meet demand of users who want a stronger hit.”

Miss Moss, a devout Christian, had frequently used cannabis during her adult life but had stopped for two years before her death last October.

She started using it again to help her sleep after becoming depressed and anxious due to breaking up with her boyfriend.

An inquest heard Miss Moss smoked half a joint a night to help get her to sleep.

Her friend, Zara Hill, said she and Miss Moss smoked about £20-[$32.86] worth of cannabis together in the week before her death.

Miss Hill told police that Miss Moss smoked as much as £60 [$98.58]…worth of the drug a week, although this was disputed by her family…

“She was a healthy 31-year-old woman who had nothing wrong with her.”

Poor Ben Sanderson drank morning, noon and night.  And suffered terrible withdrawals when he wasn’t drinking.  Near the end of his life his hand shook so much he couldn’t sign his name.  Though it was only a movie it portrayed what severe alcoholism can do to you.  Had he only drank like this woman smoked marijuana (only a ‘half portion’ at night) he would not have died the horrible death he died.  But cannabis is growing so strong these days that a ‘half portion’ can kill a healthy 31-year-old woman who’s just trying to relax a little so she can sleep.

So much for the argument that marijuana is safer than alcohol.  And that’s without considering the health effects of that first, second and third-hand smoke in people’s lungs.

A Father smokes Marijuana while his Baby Dies in Hot Parked Car

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 31st, 2013

Week in Review

Every time someone dies from a gunshot the left screams we have to do something to get these guns out of the hands of people.  For if people didn’t have guns no one would die.  Because it’s not people killing people with guns.  It’s the guns that are killing people.  And the people shooting the guns just happen to be there.

This is the logic on the left.  But yet when kids die in hot cars or because of the neglect of stoned parents they don’t say anything about getting rid of cars.  Or getting rid of drugs (see Hot Car Baby Death: ‘Joint-Smoking Dad’ Charged posted 8/30/2013 on Sky News).

A father has been accused of leaving his baby to suffocate in a parked car in temperatures of 100F, as he smoked cannabis in a sports bar…

It was thought Gray was distracted and forgot about the boy.

But Mr Thompson said police later came to suspect Gray was smoking cannabis with a work companion during the time his son was in the vehicle.

Outside temperatures were about 100 degrees, but interior car temperatures are frequently much higher.

Parents sometimes forget about a child in the back seat of a car.  Usually when there is a change in routine.  People soon forget in their busy life that today they have the child.  Then accidents happen.  And the Democrats are to blame.

The cost of the welfare state has made it hard for a single income to raise a family.  Which is why children are spending so much time in cars.  Getting shuttled between childcare and home.  Like laundry going to and from the cleaners.  Just another chore to tend to.  Because taxes are so high today that a parent can’t stay at home to raise their children.  They have to get back to work as soon as they can.

And it’s been the Democrats who have been for the decriminalization of marijuana.  For two reasons.  A lot the hippies from the Sixties who spent their time then getting high still like to light up to get high.  When they’re not busy writing the curriculum for our children’s schools.  And it’s a great way to get the youth vote.  By being everything a kid’s parents are not.  Sure, kid, sex and getting high are okay.  You vote for us and we’ll make sex and drugs a simpler part of your life.  But how many frizzled parents do we want out there getting high when they drive?  With their child in the back seat?  No.  Nothing good can come from making it easier to drive and smoke marijuana.

If it saves just one child then it’s worth doing.  That’s what they say about restrictions on gun ownership.  And if it’s good for guns than it must be good for marijuana.  It needs to be banned.  For the children.

Teens who Smoke a lot of Marijuana suffer Permanent Brain Damage

Posted by PITHOCRATES - September 1st, 2012

Week in Review

A new study is in.  And the conclusion is that marijuana use is bad.  Especially if you’re a teen (see Teen pot use linked to later declines in IQ by MALCOLM RITTER and NICK PERRY posted 8/27/2012 on the Associated Press).

Teens who routinely smoke marijuana risk a long-term drop in their IQ, a new study suggests…

Study participants from New Zealand were tested for IQ at age 13, likely before any significant marijuana use, and again at age 38. The mental decline between those two ages was seen only in those who started regularly smoking pot before age 18…

Pot is the most popular illegal drug in the world, with somewhere between 119 million and 224 million users between the ages of 15 and 64 as of 2010, the United Nations reported. Within the United States, 23 percent of high school students said they’d recently smoked marijuana, making it more popular than cigarettes, the federal government reported in June.

More popular than cigarettes?  Funny thing about a marijuana joint.  It doesn’t have a filter.  Smoking a joint is like smoking a Camel unfiltered cigarette.  Like people smoked once upon a time.  When smokers were smokers.  And smoked hardcore.  But now there is a war on smoking.  Something the Left endorses.  Yet those on the Left are generally in favor of decriminalizing drugs.  Especially marijuana.  The Left took Joe Camel off cigarette advertising because it was encouraging kids to start smoking.  So they got addicted to cigarettes.  They even sued Big tobacco.  But kids smoke more marijuana than cigarettes.  Getting more cancer-causing smoke in their lungs from illegal marijuana than from legal tobacco.  So while the Left plays nanny by trying to get cigarettes away from us they are trying to put kids at more risk.  For if marijuana is decriminalized it will be much easier for kids to smoke it.  Putting them at greater risk of lung cancer.  As well as that mental decline.  Guess the Left doesn’t like kids.

Young people “don’t think it’s risky,” said Staci Gruber, a researcher at the Harvard-affiliated MacLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. Gruber, who didn’t participate in the new work, said the idea that marijuana harms the adolescent brain is “something we believe is very likely,” and the new finding of IQ declines warrants further investigation…

The study drew on survey data from more than 1,000 people in New Zealand, everybody born in the town of Dunedin during a year-long span ending in 1973. In addition to IQ tests, they were interviewed five times between ages 18 and 38, including questions related to their marijuana use.

At age 18, 52 participants indicated they had become dependent on marijuana, meaning that they continued to use it despite its causing significant health, social or legal problems. Ninety-two others reported dependence starting at a later age.

Researchers compared their IQ scores at age 13 to the score at age 38 and found a drop only in those who had become dependent by 18…

Among participants who’d been dependent at 18 and in at least one later survey, quitting didn’t remove the problem. IQ declines showed up even if they’d largely or entirely quit using pot at age 38, analysis showed…

The researchers also surveyed people who knew the study participants well at age 38. They found that the more often participants were rated as marijuana-dependent in the surveys over their lifetimes, the more memory and attention problems were noticed by their acquaintances over the previous year.

I think we all know someone who was dependent on marijuana when he or she was a kid.  One of my best friends was your classic stoner in junior high school.  He smoked and partied through junior high and part way through high school.  When he had the first of five kids.  And then dropped out.  Got a job.  Became a Republican.  And a responsible parent.  Both he and his wife.  Who remained together to raise all five kids.  And struggled to counteract the liberal education of their children when they got home from school.

Sometimes during a conversation my friend would stop mid-conversation, cock his head and stare blankly as he tried to remember what he was saying.  Then he laughed and joked about all the brain cells he destroyed when he was a kid.  Wishing he could have them back.  I didn’t know him before the brain damage.  But he sure was a good guy after the brain damage.  I always wonder what he might have done if he and cannabis never crossed paths.  Engineer?  Physicist?  Doctor?  President?  Who knows what he may have contributed had it not been for his introduction to cannabis.  I never asked but I wonder about that first time.  Was it peer pressure?  Was it a funny movie with a lovable stoner character?  Or did he have a friend with a dad who smoked pot?  It was something.  And whatever it was it changed his life forever.

And I wonder what might have been with all those other stoners out there.  What they might have done had they not descended into drug use.  Which makes the drug debate a difficult one.  Much violent crime traces back to illegal drug trafficking.  So decriminalizing drugs would go a long way to reduce that crime.  However, this isn’t the same as repealing prohibition.  Sure, if you drink enough you can kill yourself.  And abuse your family.  You can even get a liver transplant.  But you can never recover your damaged brain cells.  Once they’re gone they’re gone.  And there’s no going back to who you were.
