The Left says Smoking Cigarettes and Drinking Alcohol are bad for you but Smoking Marijuana is OK

Posted by PITHOCRATES - December 28th, 2013

Week in Review

You hear it all the time.  Smoking marijuana is no worse than drinking alcohol.  So we should decriminalize it everywhere.  And allow responsible adults smoke marijuana if they choose.  While at the same time they have banned smoking cigarettes just about everywhere outside of your own home.  Because smoking will kill you.  And anyone near you.  Funny how smoking cigarettes will kill you and anyone near you while smoking marijuana is no worse than enjoying a refreshing adult beverage.

What’s even funnier is that as they continue to make statements like smoking marijuana is no worse than drinking alcohol they are ramping up a war on alcohol.  As drinking alcohol is killing people at record numbers (see Raising the price of booze saves lives and money. Scotland is right to try it posted 12/21/2013 on The Economist).

AMONG man’s earliest artefacts are vessels to store and carry booze. Drunk from Stone Age jugs or Etruscan amphoras, fermented sugars have brought cheer for more than 12,000 years. And headaches too: alcohol stokes rage and gloom as well as jollity and dancing. For liberal-minded types, the downsides are a personal matter—we should be free to frolic.

Within limits. Where the harm extends beyond the individual, there is a case for intervention. Global alcohol consumption is stable. But some people are tippling more, in ways that hurt themselves and others (see article).

At stake are not just vomit-drenched streets. Deaths linked to drinking have tripled since 1990; in that time alcohol has gone from the sixth to the third leading cause of death and disability worldwide. The bill lands on everyone, as does booze-fuelled violence. Including lost output, the harm from alcohol costs Europe and America around 1.5% of national income.

The problem is worsening. Across the rich world, a small share of the population consumes a large share of the liquor. One reason is that many young people have upped their intake. More drinkers are also bingeing—even in southern Europe, where alcohol used to be taken mainly with food…

The best way to tackle excessive drinking is to raise prices through taxes levied on a drink’s strength, so that the most harmful drinks are more expensive. The resulting price-rise should cut the consumption of hard-up heavy topers (who are particularly partial to dirt-cheap supermarket booze) and young drinkers, who can afford only what’s cheap…

Public-health laws often require an unpopular move at the start, but new habits and attitudes can take root surprisingly quickly. A ban on smoking in restaurants and pubs seemed outlandish—until New York City introduced one in 2003. Much of the world quickly followed suit. Even diehard liberals like this newspaper, queasy at first about smoking bans, or mandatory crash helmets and seat belts, would hesitate to scrap those regulations now.

We are drinking ourselves to death three times as much as we were in the 1990s.  And one reason why is that young people are drinking more.  In fact many of the binge drinkers are young people.  It is less uncommon to read about a binge-drinking related death on a college campus.  It’s not happening all of the time but there are deaths.  And sexual assaults.

Getting a woman drunk has long been a prelude to sex.  That’s what singles’ bars were for.  Drinking to lower a woman’s inhibitions.  To get her to go home with a strange man for consensual sex.  But at a party on a college campus?  There’s no need to go home.  For there is always a bedroom or a couch or a floor available in a fraternity house, apartment or dorm room.  And young men with raging hormones in a sexualized culture will take advantage of a passed out college coed.  Even doing terrible things to her as she lay unconscious.  Or getting a video of her while she’s still conscious doing things she’d never do sober.  And posting it online.  Causing great pain and suffering for the girl.

Smoking marijuana will be no different than people enjoying alcohol.  So we should decriminalize it.  For what bad thing ever happened from enjoying alcohol?

Marijuana is a young person’s intoxicant.  We’ve all seen the stoner movies where high school teachers have to deal with stoners.  Like Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.  And this was when the drug was illegal everywhere in the United States.  Imagine the Jeff Spicolis when the drug is decriminalized everywhere.  While being more potent than ever.  If new habits and new attitudes can take root surprisingly quickly then existing habits and attitudes and law should be just as easy to remain rooted.  Especially for marijuana.  For it combines the reckless abandon of youths to over consume like alcohol.  And the harmful effects of smoking cigarettes.

Would the left sacrifice our young just to get their vote?  Yes.  Of course they will.  And are.  For do you really think they care if these people die after they grow up and begin acting—and voting—responsibly?

College Degrees that are too Cool for School and Unwanted by Employers in a High-tech Economy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - December 8th, 2013

Week in Review

The American left is hammering millennials.  The young people.  Teenagers to thirty-somethings.  A strong demographic for the American left.  But they are just beating them up.  The latest being the punishing blows of the Affordable Care Act (i.e., Obamacare).  Which transfers the cost of the old and sick to them.  By forcing them to buy costly health insurance policies that they can’t afford.  Because the millennials are suffering the highest unemployment rates in the worst economic recovery since that following the Great Depression.

The economic policies of the Obama administration have forced over ten million people out of the labor force since Obama became president.  With this destruction of jobs the millennials graduating with a college degree can’t find a job.  At least not one using their degree.  That they financed with a large student loan.  And ended up working someplace that doesn’t require that costly degree.  Making far less than they expected when they took on all that student loan debt.  Leaving them struggling to repay that debt.

And if that wasn’t bad enough they encouraged them to go to college.  To get a college degree so they can make the big bucks after graduation.  They even took over the student loan program to make it easier to give these kids college loans.  The problem is that a lot of them did go to college.  But they got degrees like these (see College Majors That are Too Cool for School posted 12/8/2013 on Fact University).

Comic Book Art, Adventure Education, Cannabis Cultivation, Bowling Industry Management, Motorsports Science and Engineering, Winemaking, Folklore and Mythology, Comedy: Writing and Performance, Diving Business and Technology, Beatles Historian, Theme Park Engineer, Puppetry, Popular Culture, Entertainment Engineering & Design and Sexuality.

Is it any wonder the millennials are suffering some of the highest unemployment?  And why businesses have to use the visa program to get foreign college graduates to fill their science and engineering needs?

Our colleges and universities are giving our kids worthless degrees in a high-tech economy.  And it’s these degrees that the Democrats have been floating the idea of forgiving that student loan debt for.  After getting that money to their friends in higher education so they can mold their students into future Democrat voters.  And giving these kids 4 years of partying while working on degrees that are just too cool for school.  Guaranteeing a Democrat vote from each of them.  Until they grow up and experience the real world.

All Tobacco is Bad for you Except the Kind that can Help you Get the Youth Vote—Marijuana

Posted by PITHOCRATES - November 17th, 2013

Week in Review

Cigarettes will kill you.  And are addictive.  Which makes that killing you thing worse.  Governments have sued Big Tobacco for all the heart disease, lung cancer and emphysema their products caused.  Smoking is so bad for you that we’ve banned smoking in all public places.  We’ve also banned second-hand smoke.  And are discussing ways to band third-hand smoke (the stink of smoking left behind).  We ostracize smokers today.  And shame them.  Except in the movies.  Where people still love to smoke.  And they make it look so cool that kids who see them smoke want to smoke, too.

Apart from Hollywood, though, there is an outright war on smoking.  It’s just so bad that governments are doing everything they can to get people to quit smoking.  And prevent them from starting to smoke in the first place (see Fewer teens smoke but more use e-cigarettes, hookahs by Wendy Koch posted 11/14/2013 on USA Today).

Fewer U.S. teens are smoking cigarettes, but more are getting a nicotine fix from hookahs and electronic cigarettes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports today…

The CDC attributed the increase to lower prices for these products as well as their increased marketing and availability, and the perception that they are safer alternatives to cigarettes. It also found a slight uptick in high school students who smoked pipes and cigars, including the little ones that look like cigarettes but cost a lot less and come in candy flavors.

“This report raises a red flag about newer tobacco products,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden in announcing the findings. “Cigars and hookah tobacco are smoked tobacco – addictive and deadly. We need effective action to protect our kids from addiction to nicotine…”

The CDC report, published in this week’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, reported that 14% of high school students smoked cigarettes last year, down from 15.8% in 2011 and 28% in 2000. It notes that smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States, and nearly 90% of adult smokers began smoking by age 18.

Leading cause of preventable death?  And 90% of adult smokers started smoking by age 18?  Wow, smoking must be bad.  But if it is why the big push to decriminalize marijuana by the same people who want to criminalize every other type of tobacco product?  Simple.  Kids love getting high.  And if the Democrats are the ones to decriminalize marijuana they can count on the youth vote in election after election.  Until they die from heart disease, lung cancer and emphysema, that is.

Young Obama Supporters take a Knee to the Crotch under Obamacare

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 26th, 2013

Week in Review

First it was the government shutdown.  Then it was the disastrous rollout of the Obamacare website.  Both diversions to a bigger tragedy lurking beneath the surface of their rosy predictions of how great Obamacare was going to be.  The truth of how bad Obamacare already is (see Some health insurance gets pricier as Obamacare rolls out by Chad Terhune posted 10/26/2013 on the Los Angeles Times).

Thousands of Californians are discovering what Obamacare will cost them — and many don’t like what they see.

These middle-class consumers are staring at hefty increases on their insurance bills as the overhaul remakes the healthcare market. Their rates are rising in large part to help offset the higher costs of covering sicker, poorer people who have been shut out of the system for years.

Although recent criticism of the healthcare law has focused on website glitches and early enrollment snags, experts say sharp price increases for individual policies have the greatest potential to erode public support for President Obama’s signature legislation.

“This is when the actual sticker shock comes into play for people,” said Gerald Kominski, director of the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. “There are winners and losers under the Affordable Care Act…”

Pam Kehaly, president of Anthem Blue Cross in California, said she received a recent letter from a young woman complaining about a 50% rate hike related to the healthcare law.

“She said, ‘I was all for Obamacare until I found out I was paying for it,'” Kehaly said.

Nearly 2 million Californians have individual insurance, and several hundred thousand of them are losing their health plans in a matter of weeks…

A number of factors are driving up rates. In a report this year, consultants hired by the state said the influx of sicker patients as a result of guaranteed coverage was the biggest single reason for higher premiums. Bob Cosway, a principal and consulting actuary at Milliman Inc. in San Diego, estimated that the average individual premium in 2014 will rise 27% because of that difference alone.

Individual policies must also cover a higher percentage of overall medical costs and include 10 “essential health benefits,” such as prescription drugs and mental health services. The aim is to fill gaps in coverage and provide consumers more peace of mind. But those expanded benefits have to be paid for with higher premiums…

“It has the effect of benefiting people in their 50s and 60s and shifting costs to people in their 20s and 30s,” said Patrick Johnston, president of the California Assn. of Health Plans. “Benefits are being increased for all, but it’s not government subsidies for all. Some will pay more.”

Do you have a strange feeling of déjà vu?  I do.  That feeling of already experiencing this before.  But where?  Hmmm.  Oh yes.  Now I remember.  This is exactly what the Republican opposition had warned us about since the Democrats first brought forth the Affordable Care Act.  Guess the Republicans were telling the truth all along.  While the Democrats were lying through their teeth.

Guess we CAN’T keep the insurance we like after all.

It is ironic that the people who are some of the biggest Obama supporters, the young people, will get hurt the most under the Affordable Care Act.  Just so the people they’re rebelling against, those stuffy uptight old folks from their parents’ generation, benefit the most.  Imagine that.  The thanks they get for being so supportive of the president is to pay the health care bill of their parents’ generation.  All in the name of fairness.

What the young must feel reminds me of an episode of SNL with Michael Myers’ Sprockets featuring Germany’s most Disturbing Home Videos.  In particular the home video titled Kicked in the Testicles.  Where the pain is so intense the man must vomit.  That must be how the young supporters of President Obama feel now.

Obamacare freezes Hiring and robs the Healthy and Young to pay for the Old and Sick

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 20th, 2013

Week in Review

President Obama has scolded Republicans over and over during the recent government shutdown.  Saying their actions have hurt the American economy.  Just at a time when it was gaining traction.  Even business leaders appear to agree with the president (see Obamacare Delaying Hiring, Debt Ceiling Debate And Shutdown Hurt The Economy: Beige Book by Agustino Fontevecchia posted 10/16/2013 on Forbes).

The Fed released its beige book for late September to early October on Wednesday, where business leaders blamed the government shutdown and debt ceiling debate for “increased uncertainty…”

Business leaders hate uncertainty.  Because you can’t plan your cash flow or your capital budget when you are uncertain about the future.  So the president may be right there.  But you know what else business leaders hate?  Obamacare.

…while employers remained reluctant to expand payrolls because of Obamacare.

Talk about your uncertainty.  Of course, President Obama doesn’t care about what this uncertainty does to the economy.  Or what Obamacare does to a part of his liberal base.  The youth vote (see Premiums for young healthy people will jump in 45 states under Obamacare by JOEL GEHRKE posted 10/19/2013 on the Washington Examiner).

Young people in 45 states will see their health insurance premiums increase under Obamacare because the law relies on the money they pay into the system to offset the cost of caring for older enrollees, according to a new study.

Virginia leads the pack, as individuals aged 27 and under will see their health insurance premiums jump by 252.5 percent — $416.55 — according to the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis.

Virginians under the age of 50 will see their premiums jump by an even greater percentage, rising from $228 to $991.03.

During the hippy movement the mantra was to never trust anyone over thirty.  Now those hippies are in the government.  Who are the architects of Obamacare.  And they’re taking money from those under 30 to pay for the health care of those over thirty.  Including those old hippies who are now racking up huge medical bills.  And don’t want to pay for their own costly health care.

Guess the hippies were right.  You should never trust anyone over 30.  Especially if they’re liberal Democrats.

Cory Monteith is another Victim in the Democrat’s War on the Young

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 5th, 2013

Week in Review

Cory Monteith’s death is a warning.  Kids should listen to their parents more.  And to the Democrats less (see ‘Glee’ actor Corey Monteith died of heroin, alcohol mix by JEREMY HAINSWORTH, Associated Press, posted 10/2/2013 on The Kansas City Star).

The British Columbia Coroners Service said Wednesday investigators found a spoon with drug residue and a used hypodermic needle in the hotel room where “Glee” actor Cory Monteith was found dead in July.

The coroner’s final report issued Wednesday, confirmed initial findings that Monteith died from using intravenous heroin combined with alcohol…

The investigation said Monteith had a history of illicit drug use with intermittent periods of rehabilitation and of abstinence from drugs…

His death recalled the lives of Heath Ledger, Corey Haim and River Phoenix — actors who battled substance abuse and died in their 20s and 30s.

Monteith had talked bluntly about struggling with addiction since he was a teenager, calling it a serious problem and telling Parade magazine in 2011 he was “lucky to be alive.”

In that interview, he said he was using marijuana and drinking by age 13, and his drug use was “out of control” by the time he was 16. “Anything and everything, as much as possible,” he said. “I had a serious problem.”

People always like to make a comparison between marijuana and alcohol.  That marijuana is no worse than alcohol.  But there is only one drunk.  While there are many highs.  With the next high always promising to be better than the last high.  Something we call chasing the dragon.  That often ends in overdoses.  And death.  Like in Monteith’s case.

Notice the drug Monteith started with.  Marijuana.  Which is why marijuana isn’t like alcohol.  Because there aren’t new ways of getting drunk when an old way of getting drunk bores you.  Not so with drugs.  Where amateurs and novices start off with marijuana.  Until it bores them.  Then they start looking for new highs.  Better highs.  Until one day they start injecting drugs of dubious origin into their veins.

People don’t start by injecting drugs of dubious origin into their veins.  That’s an experienced drug user.  Who worked their way up to heroin.  After starting with marijuana.  The very drug states are now starting to decriminalize.  While the federal government looks the other way.  If marijuana is no longer illegal more people are likely to try it.  Get bored with it.  And move on to other drugs.  Just like Monteith, Heath Ledger, Corey Haim and River Phoenix did.  And countless children whose deaths didn’t make it into the news.  With countless others soon to follow.

The young like the Democrats.  Because they are not their parents.  Instead of saying ‘no’ to sex and drugs the Democrats give out free birth control.  Resulting in an explosion of sexually transmitted diseases.  Especially among young girls.  Who will have to live with that for the rest of their lives.  Even when trying to find someone to marry and start a family with.  Which an STD doesn’t make easy.  While other girls become mothers before they leave high school.  Setting back any career plans they may have had as they can’t raise their children and go off to college.  While others get abortions.  Which some regret as they grow older.  Not all.  But those who do can’t stop thinking about the life that didn’t happen because of what they did.  When they made a decision as a child their grownup self regrets.  So the Democrats really mess up young people’s lives.  And if that damage wasn’t enough they are now making it easier to become a drug addict.  By making the number one gateway drug no longer illegal.

Democrats will do anything to secure the youth vote.  Even if they destroy their lives in the process.  Which they often do.  In fact, they’re destroying their entire generation with the debt they’re going to leave them.  While at the same time impoverishing them with Obamacare.  Where the young and healthy will pay for the health care of the old and sick.  Leaving them with little now.  And even less to save for their own retirement.  Making the Democrats young people’s worst enemy.  Yet the Democrats have fooled them into believing that they are their best friend.  Just goes to show you what you can do if you have no conscious.  Which is easier to do when you get rid of God everywhere.  For if there is no God what do you have to worry about in this life when you believe there is no afterlife?  Talk about your freedoms.  Freedom from empathy.  Something that comes in handy for a ruling class interested only in power.

The Democrats’ War on Women creates Naive Women in the Porn Industry

Posted by PITHOCRATES - September 21st, 2013

Week in Review

Kids today are so much more mature and responsible than they were in prior generations.  Which is why the left hands out free birth control.  And makes sure our school kids have access to abortion.  And the morning after pill without parental notification.  Because our kids are just so mature, well-informed and responsible.  Unlike some professional sex workers (se ‘A piece of paper that says you’re clean doesn’t mean anything’: First porn star to go public over contracting HIV says she was naive to trust industry checks by Daily Mail Reporter posted 9/12/2013 on Mail Online).

Cameron Bay, the adult film actress who recently contracted HIV, is calling for more porn producers to encourage the use of safe sex on set.

The 29-year-old actress says she was naive to trust industry STD tests and said other performers told her not to ask for condoms.

‘I learned that there’s always someone younger and sexier, willing to do something you’re not,’ Bay told the Huffington Post. ‘I think we need more choices because of that. Condoms should be a choice.’

Bay performed in her first porn scene a few months ago but, after just nine more scenes, she tested positive for HIV.

So this makes her 28-29 when she entered the porn business.  Which is pretty old in the porn industry.  For it is a business for “younger and sexier” women.  Which just begs the question.  Why are there so many “younger and sexier” women just waiting to enter such a horrible business?  You hear stories like this often.  About how exploitative the porn business is.  Yet there is always someone “younger and sexier” just waiting to take someone’s horrible job away from them.

The actress does not know when or from whom she contacted the disease, but admitted that none of the male performers she worked with used condoms.

Bay said another actress told her: ‘Don’t even bring it up because they have somebody waiting to replace you…’

Bay, who also had to be treated in hospital after contracting a kidney infection after one film, said all but one of her scenes were filmed in Los Angeles, and one was filmed in San Francisco.

The San Francisco one, which involved bondage and anal sex, was the only set to have offered her the option of a condom, but Bay said she didn’t feel she needed one because her male co-star had a negative STD test.

‘I was new to the industry. When I was told that I was safe to shoot, I was like, “OK, cool”,’ she said. ‘I had no idea. I really didn’t understand…’

She was 28-29 and yet she had no idea and didn’t understand.  And yet we’re giving birth control, access to abortion and the morning after pill without parental notification to girls as young as 15.  Because they’re mature enough to make these decisions without parental notification.  How can that be?  A 15-year old girl is mature enough to be sexually active with multiple sex partners but a 28-29 year old woman is not?

The Democrats raised the whole Republican war on women during the 2012 campaign because the Republicans did not want to sexualize women as much as the Democrats did.  Giving them everything they need to be sexually active with multiple sex partners.  Just to get the youth vote.  For there is nothing more important to the young, cool crowd than acting like adults when it comes to sex.  Well, if it wasn’t for this sexually liberated attitude perhaps there wouldn’t be any “younger and sexier” women just waiting to take over someone’s horrible job in the porn industry.

After her HIV diagnosis, a six-day moratorium was put in place to prevent further cases being spread.

However, a week after the moratorium was lifted, two more porn actors, including Bay’s boyfriend Rod Daily, tested positive for HIV…

She added that had she been properly informed she would have demanded a condom each time she worked, adding: ‘At the end of the day, it’s about your safety. And a piece of paper that says you’re clear to shoot doesn’t mean anything.’

When people first started contracting HIV it wasn’t called the porn disease.  It was called the ‘gay’ disease.  Because it came out of the gay community.  If you ever watched the movie Cruising with Al Pacino you’ll understand why.  The gay scene in the Eighties was very hedonistic.  Men went to gay bars and clubs to meet and have sex with other men.  Sometimes without even leaving the club.  These men had so many sexual partners that the disease had spread throughout the gay community before they even identified the disease.

HIV is not a porn disease.  It is everywhere where people are sexually active with multiple partners.  In fact, the porn industry is probably the safest place to be to have sex with multiple partners without catching HIV.  For there is mandatory testing.  Unlike in the general population where people may have infected 10 people before they are diagnosed with the disease.  And only after exhibiting symptoms of the disease.  At which point they may keep that diagnosis a secret.  And continue to infect further sex partners.   Which they can’t do in the porn industry.  Because that diagnosis isn’t secret.

There aren’t many prim and proper virgins entering the porn industry.  To be able to have sex on camera requires a certain lax attitude about sex.  An attitude that develops after having so much sex that it really isn’t that big of a deal anymore.  Which begs the question.  Who gave HIV to whom?  Did some porn actor spread it to her and her boyfriend?  Did she give it to her boyfriend?  Or did her boyfriend give it to her?  Outside the porn industry?  Which isn’t that hard to believe.  Considering how much casual sex there is these days.  Thanks to the Democrats who have sexualized young people in exchange for their vote.

It’s sad.  Porn executives exploit young women to make a buck.  Just as the Democrats exploit young women to get a vote.  And if it weren’t for Democrats there would probably not be much of a porn industry.  As there wouldn’t be a long line of “younger and sexier” women waiting to enter the industry.  Making it the Democrats, then, who have a war on women.

Colleges sell Kids Unmarketable Degrees, making them Unemployable and Deep in Debt

Posted by PITHOCRATES - September 8th, 2013

Week in Review

The economy is horrible.  Youth unemployment is soaring.  As is student loan debt.  Which is a big problem when you can’t get a job in a horrible economy.  Or the only job you can get you could have gotten without that costly degree.  And your student loan payment consumes a quarter of your income.  This is not the American dream these kids went to college for.  So why is it so bad for college graduates today?  And why are we looking at a student loan crisis?  Democrats.  In particular, liberal Democrats (see A quarter of recent college graduates lack jobs by John Carney posted 9/6/2013 on CNBC).

At the turn of the century, recent college graduates had an average debt of $15,100. Last year the average debt of graduates was $27,253. This increase in the debt burden has not been matched by economic gains for college graduates. According to the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, 10 percent of recent graduates of four-year colleges have monthly student loan payments that exceed of 25% of their income. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which only recently began looking specifically at the employment situation of people in their first few years out of college, says that as of 2011 25.5 percent of recent college graduates were jobless. (Unfortunately, more recent data about recent grads isn’t yet available.)

Seven million borrowers are in default on private or federal loans, according to the CFPB. An additional 8.9 million have deferred payments or have their loans in forbearance. These aren’t signs of a healthy contingent of borrowers.

At the turn of the century more college graduates had jobs and carried less student loan debt.  Back then there were no gender studies.  No minority studies.  No information systems.  People were getting degrees that the jobs of the day demanded.  And because they did they got hired out of college.  Into good jobs.  That allowed them to repay their student loans.  And helped make America the number one economic power in the world.  Today people with degrees that have no market value end up as baristas at Starbucks.  Which they could have done without going $27,253 into debt.

But it’s not their fault.  Colleges told them about the great wealth that awaited them with their degrees in women studies, minority studies, information systems, sociology, French literature, philosophy, etc.,  even though our high-tech economy was demanding people with math and science degrees.  Which is why we have to hand out visas to get foreigners with those degrees to work at US companies.  Because our liberal colleges are getting rich selling ‘easy’ degrees to kids more interested in having a good time while at college.  Which is easier to do when you don’t have a lot of math and science courses weighing you down.

This is why college graduates can’t get jobs and are drowning in debt.  The left’s incessant attacks on capitalism pushed these kids away from the corporate world into more noble pursuits.  By getting degrees that have no market value.  But show that they are not money-grubbing capitalists.  Though they do tend to complain that their degrees (and student loan debt) didn’t bring them the riches the colleges promised them.

A Father smokes Marijuana while his Baby Dies in Hot Parked Car

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 31st, 2013

Week in Review

Every time someone dies from a gunshot the left screams we have to do something to get these guns out of the hands of people.  For if people didn’t have guns no one would die.  Because it’s not people killing people with guns.  It’s the guns that are killing people.  And the people shooting the guns just happen to be there.

This is the logic on the left.  But yet when kids die in hot cars or because of the neglect of stoned parents they don’t say anything about getting rid of cars.  Or getting rid of drugs (see Hot Car Baby Death: ‘Joint-Smoking Dad’ Charged posted 8/30/2013 on Sky News).

A father has been accused of leaving his baby to suffocate in a parked car in temperatures of 100F, as he smoked cannabis in a sports bar…

It was thought Gray was distracted and forgot about the boy.

But Mr Thompson said police later came to suspect Gray was smoking cannabis with a work companion during the time his son was in the vehicle.

Outside temperatures were about 100 degrees, but interior car temperatures are frequently much higher.

Parents sometimes forget about a child in the back seat of a car.  Usually when there is a change in routine.  People soon forget in their busy life that today they have the child.  Then accidents happen.  And the Democrats are to blame.

The cost of the welfare state has made it hard for a single income to raise a family.  Which is why children are spending so much time in cars.  Getting shuttled between childcare and home.  Like laundry going to and from the cleaners.  Just another chore to tend to.  Because taxes are so high today that a parent can’t stay at home to raise their children.  They have to get back to work as soon as they can.

And it’s been the Democrats who have been for the decriminalization of marijuana.  For two reasons.  A lot the hippies from the Sixties who spent their time then getting high still like to light up to get high.  When they’re not busy writing the curriculum for our children’s schools.  And it’s a great way to get the youth vote.  By being everything a kid’s parents are not.  Sure, kid, sex and getting high are okay.  You vote for us and we’ll make sex and drugs a simpler part of your life.  But how many frizzled parents do we want out there getting high when they drive?  With their child in the back seat?  No.  Nothing good can come from making it easier to drive and smoke marijuana.

If it saves just one child then it’s worth doing.  That’s what they say about restrictions on gun ownership.  And if it’s good for guns than it must be good for marijuana.  It needs to be banned.  For the children.

The Cost of Higher Education rose Twice as Much as Health Care Costs

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 31st, 2013

Week in Review

It’s bad enough that higher education is programming our kids to become good liberals.  But their getting rich in the process is just rubbing salt into the wound (see College Costs Surge 500% in U.S. Since 1985: Chart of the Day by Michelle Jamrisko & Ilan Kolet posted 8/26/2013 on Bloomberg).

The cost of higher education has surged more than 500 percent since 1985, illustrating why there have been renewed calls for change from both political parties.

The CHART OF THE DAY shows that tuition expenses have increased 538 percent in the 28-year period, compared with a 286 percent jump in medical costs and a 121 percent gain in the consumer price index. The ballooning charges have generated swelling demand for educational loans while threatening to make college unaffordable for domestic and international students.

What expenses does a college have?  There are shelters (i.e., buildings) where students sit and learn.  But shelter costs rose nowhere near the amount going to college did.  So it’s not the buildings.  So what else do colleges have?  That tuition pays for?  Excluding books and living expenses that are above and beyond tuition expenses?  Well, the only other thing they really have are people.

College administrators and college professors.  If the high tuition costs are not due the costs of the buildings on the college campus then we must be paying the people too much.  In pay and benefits.  So let’s crunch some numbers.

The average annual cost for a 4-year public college is about $18,000 (see The Average Cost of a U.S. College Education posted 8/24/2010 in US News and World Repot).  Based on a typical enrollment of 40,000 students that comes to an annual college revenue of $720,000,000.  If the college has $1.5 billion in debt on its books for capital improvements on average at 6% that comes to an annual interest expense of $90 million.  Let’s assume they retire $50 million in debt every year.  And their operating costs (everything else but pay and benefits for administrators and professors) are, say, $25 million.  Subtracting all this from the annual tuition revenue leaves $555 million for pay and benefits each year.  Assuming a professor/administrator for each 20 students that gives us 900 professors/administrators.  Dividing this into that $555 million gives us about $617,000 per professor/administrator annually.

This is just a rough estimate but it does give you an idea about the amount of money we’re talking about here.  Not all professors are making $617,000 but if you’re tenured you’re living well.  Very well.  And administrators typically live far better than tenured professors.  This is what students are going in debt for.  To give a privileged few a life others can only dream about.  Worse, a lot of these students who graduate have an unmarketable degree.  In an economy where employers are looking for people with math and science skills people with degrees in romantic languages or gender studies will not fare well.  But the people who sold them those degrees will be doing very well.  This is why we have a student loan debt problem.  Students took on enormous debt for a degree they can’t use.

Everyone loves to complain about the high cost of health care.  And demand that government do something about it.  Well, they did.  They gave us Obamacare.  Which promises to squeeze hospitals and doctors.  To make them do more for less.  Obamacare is so bad that it is causing some doctors to retire early.  Just so they don’t have to deal with it.  Yet the cost of college has gone up at twice the rate of health care costs.  But where is the outcry over that?  Where are the people demanding that government do something?   To squeeze those universities, professors and administrators?  Why should they get rich at providing education.  If doctors shouldn’t get rich saving lives why should educators be allowed to get rich selling unmarketable degrees?  Just why is it educators can get away with being the greediest of the greedy and escape government scrutiny?

Because they teach their students to be good liberals, that’s why.  And this is so valuable to Democrats that they are willing to raise the taxes on their constituents as much as it takes.  Because without the programming higher education provides few would vote Democrat.
