South Korea helps look for lost North Korean Ship and Crew despite North Korea’s Belligerence

Posted by PITHOCRATES - April 5th, 2014

Week in Review

North Korea is a pain in the ass.  The ruling regime, that is.  Not the people.  Who are always suffering at the hands of the ruling regime.  Which is always looking to cause trouble.  So they can get some international relief for their horrible economy.  As they cannot feed their people or produce enough electricity to light up the night.  So they are always doing something belligerent.  To frighten everyone that they might do something nuclear.  The world gets frightened.  And offers some relief.  It’s the same thing over and over again.  Like I said, they’re a pain in the ass.  Yet despite this when a North Korean ship goes missing South Korea doesn’t hesitate to come to the aid of the belligerent North Korea (see South Korea says 2 NKorean ship crew members dead by AP posted 4/3/2014 on Yahoo! News).

The bodies of two North Korean sailors were recovered Friday after their cargo ship went missing off the southern coast of South Korea but 11 others are still missing, South Korea’s coast guard said…

The statement said the 4,300-ton-class ship carrying iron ore was sailing to China from the North Korean port city of Chongjin.

The coast guard said it had mobilized 13 vessels and six aircraft to search for the ship and its crew members. High waves and a strong wind are still hampering rescue operations, according to coast guard officers.

It was not immediately known how South Korea will handle the rescued North Korean sailors, though Seoul usually repatriates North Korean sailors found drifting in South Korean waters if they want to return home.

The Korean Peninsula remains in a technical state of war as the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. On Monday, the rival Koreas fired hundreds of artillery shells into each other’s waters in a flare-up of animosities.

You see, South Korea is not an ass like North Korea.  Despite their history.  North Korea invaded South Korea. When the UN forces pushed them back to the Yalu River (the border between North Korea and China) Chinese troops poured over the border and extended the Korean War for years.  To this day China is the only friend North Korea has.  Yet here is South Korea helping to find missing North Korean sailors.  Even though that ship was carrying iron ore to China.  If a South Korean ship disappeared off the coast of North Korea would North Korea even lift a finger to help find the ship?  Probably not.  They would likely just patrol their coastline and arrest anyone that comes ashore as a spy.  And use them as bargaining chips for more relief.

“Figures don’t Lie, but Liars Figure”

Posted by PITHOCRATES - April 5th, 2014

Week in Review

There’s an old saying by Mark Twain that goes like this.  “Figures don’t Lie, but Liars Figure.”  Which basically means you can make statistical figures say anything you want them to say.  For example, here are two statistics that make it sound like black fathers are better parents than white fathers (see Harper’s Index posted April of 2014 pm Harpers Magazine).

Percentage of white live-in fathers who help their children with their homework daily : 28

Of black live-in fathers who do : 41

Almost half of all live-in black fathers help their children with their homework.  While only 28% of white live-in fathers do.  So black fathers are better parents than white fathers.  At least, these statistics would seem to say so.  But it’s what these statistics don’t say that will change the conclusion these two statistics appear to make.

First of all, children who receive more help with their homework will do better in school.  For their children will be doing their homework if their dad is there helping them.  So the homework is getting done.  And if children have trouble understanding something their dad is their clarifying and explaining things.  So these children are going to do better in school.  And a larger percentage of them will graduate from high school.  As students who work hard and do their homework are more likely to graduate than those who don’t.  So, do the statistics for high school graduation rates show that black live-in fathers are doing a better job helping their kids with their homework?  No.  According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (see National public high school graduation rate at a four-decade high by Lyndsey Layton posted 1/22/2013 on The Washington Post), high school graduation rates were 83% for whites and 66.1% for blacks.

Learning abilities are the same for both blacks and whites.  So you can’t say that whites are smarter than blacks.  So is there something else that can explain the difference in graduation rates?  Yes.  The inability to make kids do their homework.  For if they’re not doing their homework they’re not progressing through high school.  And many just drop out.  But according to the statistics more black live-in fathers are helping their kids with their homework than white live-in fathers.  So how is it that blacks have a lower high school graduation rate?  Because of something the statistics don’t show.

According to Census data (see Social and Economic Characteristics of Currently Unmarried Women With a Recent Birth: 2011 posted on census.gov), the percent of out-of-wedlock births was 29.2% for whites and 67.8% for blacks.  Less than a third of white children are born out-of-wedlock.  While just over two-thirds of black children are born out-of-wedlock.  To single mothers who struggle to both work and raise their children.  Leaving them little time to help them with their homework. And because these mothers are single and working their children may be home alone.  And more likely to get into trouble.  Not do their homework.  And drop out of school.

So the higher rate of children born out-of-wedlock would explain the lower high school graduation rates for black children.  While the percentage of black live-in fathers helping their children is skewed.  For it’s only 41% of the 32.2% (100% – 67.8%) of black fathers who stayed in the home to help raise their children.  While it’s 28% of the larger 70.8% (100% – 29.2%) of white fathers who stayed home to help raise their children.  (Assuming born in-wedlock means the same as live-in father.  Of course a child could be born in-wedlock only to see his parents divorce later making his or her mother a single mother.  However, with child support and alimony payments a percentage of these single mothers would not have to work and thus be able to spend more time with their child.  So a divorced mother probably would not have to struggle as much a single mother who was never married.  Especially if the divorced parents are older when they start their families and the husband has an established career providing the financial resources that allows the divorced mother to stay at home with the children).

Crunching these numbers for 1,000 fathers you get about 131 black fathers and 779 white fathers (blacks are approximately 13.1% of the population and whites are approximately 77.9%).  Of these 131 black fathers about 42 (32.2%) are live-in.  And of these 779 white fathers about 552 (70.8%) are live-in.  Bringing us to approximately 17 (41%) black live-in fathers who help their children with their homework.  And approximately 154 (28%) white fathers who help their children with their homework.

So, if you look at the total number of live-in fathers helping their children with their homework (17 and 154) the number of white live-in fathers doing so is approximately 793% greater than black live-in fathers.  Or for every black live-in father helping his child with his or her homework there are about 9 white live-in fathers helping their children.  Which sounds like white fathers are spending more time helping their children with their homework.  Which they are because there are more white fathers than black fathers.  In a random sample of 1000 fathers there would be approximately 6 white fathers for every black father.  Based on the demographics of the population.

So we have looked at statistics in numerous ways.  Proving once again that “figures don’t lie, but liars figure.”  Or that you can make statistics say anything you want them to say.  So you should always be suspect when people use statistics to support their argument.  Because there is a lot of interpretation the number crunchers make with the data.  A lot of assumptions.  And are often a selective and subjective in their use of the data.  Especially when it’s the government uses those statistics to justify new spending, new taxes, new regulations, etc.  Because these are the people who truly figure with the numbers.  They did it in the days of Mark Twain.  And they still do it today.

The changing of the Benghazi Talking Points for Political Reasons was not Political according to CIA

Posted by PITHOCRATES - April 5th, 2014

Week in Review

Susan Rice said it.  Hillary Clinton said it.  And President Obama said it.  Over and over again.  The attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi was due to a YouTube video that incited a spontaneous protest that resulted with an attack on the mission with assault weapons and pre-sighted mortars.  Highly improbable but that’s what they said.  Over and over again.  It wasn’t a terrorist attack.  Because President Obama killed Osama bin Laden and won the War on Terror.  The 2012 campaign slogan was Osama bin Laden is dead.  General Motors is alive.  And al Qaeda is on the ropes.  On the run.  No longer a threat to the United States.  That’s why we had to reelect President Obama.  For he sure couldn’t point to any successes when it came to the economy.

Of course beefing up security in Benghazi would have harmed that narrative.  So while the British were pulling out of Benghazi because a resurgent al Qaeda was making it too dangerous the U.S. State Department denied Ambassador Steven’s request for additional security.  Because a resurgent al Qaeda was making it very dangerous in Benghazi.  But the American people didn’t hear that.  No.  All they heard was that Osama bin Laden is dead.  General Motors is alive.  And al Qaeda is on the ropes.  On the run.  No longer a threat to the United States.  Of course the murder of four Americans in Benghazi said otherwise (see Former CIA official: No politics in Benghazi memo by DONNA CASSATA, AP, posted 4/2/2014 on Yahoo! News).

The CIA’s former deputy director said Wednesday he deleted references to terrorism warnings from widely disputed talking points on the deadly 2012 Benghazi attack to avoid the spy agency’s gloating at the expense of the State Department…

Morell, a 33-year veteran of the agency who has served six Republican and Democratic presidents, insisted that politics had no bearing on the revisions to the talking points and said he was under no pressure to protect either President Barack Obama or then Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton…

The White House, wrapped up in a fierce presidential campaign, made only minor editorial changes to the talking points, according to the onetime CIA official.

The intelligence community’s talking points, compiled for members of Congress, suggested the Sept. 11 attack stemmed from protests in Cairo and elsewhere over an anti-Islamic video rather than an assault by extremists.

Republicans have accused the Obama administration of trying to mislead the American people about an act of terrorism in the final weeks before the November election.

Morell deleted references to extremist threats linked to al-Qaida in versions of the talking points that were used by Susan Rice, then U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, in a series of Sunday talk show appearances. Morell said his actions were driven by the information provided by intelligence community analysts and the Defense Department.

The deleted references to terrorism in the talking points were not political?  His revisions to the talking points were not to protect either President Barack Obama or then Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton?  Funny.  As that’s exactly what they did.  They protected President Obama and helped him win reelection.  And they protected Hillary Clinton.  Who is now the Democrat frontrunner for 2016.  Well, so far, at least.

The left is still trying to blame 9/11 (the first one in 2001) on President Bush and Condoleezza Rice.  For missing the signs that al Qaeda was a threat.  And that something big was coming.  Can you imagine the fury over Benghazi had it happened under President Bush’s watch?  While they were in a campaign season?  There would be no talking point revisions.  They would have lambasted President Bush and Condoleezza Rice.  The press would have torn into this story like a pack of hyenas tearing into a gazelle.  The media would have crapped all over the Bush administration.  But the Obama administration?  When the president, Hilary Clinton and Susan Rice all lied about a YouTube video?  Over and over again?  When the CIA revised the talking points so it didn’t sound like there was a problem with terrorism anymore?  All lies.  And a huge cover-up.  But we hear nothing but the sound of crickets from the media.

Sure, they can say it wasn’t political.  But the result of those revisions was very political.  It helped President Obama win reelection.  Because he had al Qaeda on the run.  Which he didn’t.  In fact, his foreign policy has made the world a more dangerous place.  For al Qaeda is resurgent everywhere.  In Egypt.  Libya.  Syria.  Iraq.  Afghanistan.  Yemen.  And elsewhere.  Oh, and Iran is working on a nuclear bomb.  And Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea to Russia.  Because he could.  This stuff is happening in part because people voted for President Obama believing the lie that al Qaeda was on the run.  When it wasn’t.  And because we reelected President Obama his failed foreign policy continues.  As the bad people of the world stand up and take notice.

The United States of America under President Obama is weak.  It may talk the talk but it sure doesn’t walk the walk.  So the bad guys are getting bolder.  Knowing the time is right to push the United States around.  For we are a sleeping bear that just can’t be wakened.  Apparently.

Los Angeles Fire Department struggles to add Women to their Firefighter Rolls

Posted by PITHOCRATES - April 5th, 2014

Week in Review

Men and women are different.  Men are bigger and stronger.  Which is why women have easier physical requirements than the men at our service academies.  Because it’s very important to have more women in the military.  Apparently.  So they make it easier for the women.  But it’s just not our service academies that are desperate to have more women complete training successfully.  Even the Los Angeles Fire Department has been struggling with this (see Only female in LAFD’s class of firefighter recruits resigns by Ben Welsh and Robert J. Lopez posted 4/2/2014 on the Los Angeles Times).

The only woman selected for a controversial class of Los Angeles Fire Department recruits has resigned in the latest setback to a decades-long effort to increase the number of women in the department’s ranks…

“I didn’t feel like it was ultimately the job for me,” Juergens said in an interview Wednesday. “But I was very welcomed and offered support and encouragement along the way…”

… despite repeated efforts at reform, the percentage of female firefighters remains at just under 3% — the same as in 1995…

“We can debate what percentage of female recruits is possible, but 0% is absolutely unacceptable,” Robb said…

The city has asked Rand Corp. to help overhaul firefighter screening and hiring procedures, as well as examine the practices of the training academy.

“We want to make sure we hire the most qualified firefighter candidates possible and maximize their chances of success,” Robb said.

In other words, the city has asked Rand Corp. how they can make the training easier so more women stay in through completion.  I mean, what else could the problem be?  Men are able to complete training.  So the training is not impossible.  And they’re not making it harder for the women.  This recruit said that she ” was very welcomed and offered support and encouragement along the way.”  I sure hope they’re not doing this for the male recruits.  For if they don’t have what it takes people would want to know that during training.  Not at a fire where they may imperil their fellow firefighters or the people they’re supposed to save.  No, to make sure only the best make it through any training program it should be more like this (WARNING: This movie clip is rated R and is not suitable for the workplace.  It has offensive language and violent content.  Including a suicide.  Some may find it very disturbing).

Running into gunfire or into a burning building goes against every fiber in your body.  But if you complete training as stressful and horrible as this there’s nothing you feel you can’t do.  And no matter how horrible it is at least it isn’t as bad as your training.  This is why so few people complete good training.  Because training is hard.  It’s not supposed to be easy.  It’s supposed to prepare you for the worst.  Not nurture and encourage you.  For if you’re running into gunfire or into a burning building who do you want at your side?  Someone who was treated nice during training who was supported and encouraged?  Or someone who went to hell and back?  Someone so mentally and physically strong that they will be there for you no matter how bad things get?

Firefighter training is not as difficult as Marine training (incidentally, the drill instructor in the movie clip ad-libbed a lot of those lines.  R. Lee Ermey was a real drill instructor who served a tour of duty in Vietnam).  But making it easier for women to complete training is not going to make better firefighters.  It’s going to allow less physically and mentally strong people make it through training.  Which can’t make the good people of Los Angeles feel safer.  At least not those who may need a firefighter to rescue them one day.

And there’s nothing wrong with 0% of female recruits completing the training and joining the fire department.  It just means 100% of the recruits who did are highly qualified.  As well as male.  That’s all.

The EPA is Poisoning People while Fracking is making People’s lives Better

Posted by PITHOCRATES - April 5th, 2014

Week in Review

There have been a lot of movies showing how fracking is polluting our groundwater.  Giving people cancer.  Causing fire to blow out of people’s water faucets.  Makers of movies appear on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report talking about how horrible and dangerous fracking is.  So the evils of fracking are all around us.  But, strangely, these dangers are conspicuous by their absence in one area.  Actual news stories.

We hear about how global warming is getting worse.  We hear example after example of how Republicans hate the poor and women and want to take away health insurance from everyone.  We are bombarded with news about how the rich aren’t paying their fair share and how Republicans are trying to buy elections.  But we don’t see reporters filming fire shooting out of a water faucet.  And we don’t see the CDC in fracking areas responding to soaring cancer rates.  Or fracking fields being turned into superfund cleanup sites.

It’s odd because when Malaysian Airways Flight 370 went missing 4 weeks ago CNN covered the missing airplane 24/7.  Even though they had nothing to report.  They just brought in experts (and a physic) and theorized about what might have happened.  The other news channels covered the non-news with nearly the same fervor as CNN.  So you would think that if fracking was causing fire to shoot out of water faucets and was giving everyone cancer they would be covering that 24/7.  For most of these news channels are liberal.  And liberals hate fracking.  But they don’t go to North Dakota to report the abject misery fracking has brought them.  Probably because they don’t want to show the economic boom going on in North Dakota.  Where people are going to for jobs.  Where the unemployment rate there (2.6% as of February 2014) is the lowest in the nation.  Perhaps that’s why they don’t report the abject misery fracking is causing in North Dakota.  Because there is none.

So if the media isn’t in North Dakota is the government?  Is the EPA documenting the abject misery fracking is causing the good people of North Dakota?  No.  Instead, they’re purposely trying to give people cancer (see What’s more dangerous to your health than fracking? The EPA, apparently by Ashe Schow posted 4/2/2014 on the Washington Examiner).

An EPA inspector general’s report found that the agency did obtain approval to conduct five “human research studies” exposing “81 human study subjects to” toxic pollutants including diesel exhaust…

So the EPA asked people to expose themselves to dangerous pollutants — some at levels 50 times greater than what is safe — but didn’t tell them about the dangers.

Why would the EPA, which supposedly cares so much about the public’s health, do this, especially to people who already had health problems?

To justify more regulations and funding, of course.

They are desperately trying to kill people by exposing them to something they can later call a toxic pollutant.  So they can “justify more regulations and funding.”  And they will tell the people they kill, “Fear not, you shall not have died in vain.  Your horrible death will bring about the greatest kind of good there is.  It will enable us to expand the size of the federal government.  Allowing it to reach further into your lives.  Well, not yours per se because you’ll be dead.  Thanks to us.  But other people will know the joy of having the federal government intruding further into their private lives.  Until one day there are no more private lives.”

This is what the federal government thinks is good.  Not a 2.6% unemployment rate.  Like they have in North Dakota.  Thanks to fracking.  Which the people living there don’t seem to mind.  As the people moving there don’t seem to mind.  Interestingly, the blue states with higher concentrations of liberals aren’t enjoying such economic prosperity.   The unemployment rate in New York is 6.8%.  In Illinois it’s 8.7%.  And in California it’s 8%.  So they’re doing something right in North Dakota.  And something very wrong in New York, Illinois and California.  Perhaps committing too many resources on liberal policies.  Instead of creating an economic climate that will give people the thing they want most.  A job.
