Jon Stewart to lose all respect for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio after he did what Donald Trump Did

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 12th, 2014

Week in Review

The new mayor of New York City just stuck a fork in the eye of New York City (see Bill de Blasio uses a fork & knife to eat pizza by Yoav Gonen and Kathryn Cusma posted 1/10/2014 on the New York Post).

Some New Yorker!

Mayor de Blasio shunned years of Big Apple custom Friday by digging into a slice of Staten Island pizza with a knife and fork.

With the move, Hizzoner joined the ranks of real estate mogul Donald Trump and former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who were ridiculed in 2011 for not eating New York City pizza like a New Yorker — with their hands.

Eating New York pizza with a fork?  Pahdon me while I play the grahnd piano (I believe that was a line from the Monty Python television show).  What’s next?  Requiring New Yorkers to grovel in your presence?  For after all, you eat pizza with a fork.  Like a European or something.  A man of sophistication.  And pomposity far exceeding your common New Yorker.  It was bad enough you were getting rid of the horses from Central Park.  For your real estate friends.  And to do God knows what with those horses.  Which they eat in France.  And probably something you eat, too, with your fancy fork.

Perhaps Jon Stewart said it best.  What he thought about a man eating his New York pie with a fork (see About (Late) Last Night: Jon Stewart slams Donald Trump for eating pizza with a fork [Video] by Meredith Blake posted 7/2/2011 on the Los Angeles Times).

Donald Trump likes to think of himself as the quintessential New Yorker, but Jon Stewart begs to differ. His main bone of contention? The way Trump eats his pizza. As Stewart put it Wednesday night on “The Daily Show,” “Based on how you eat pizza, Donald, I want to see your long-form birth certificate. I don’t think you were really born in New York…”

The accusations came at the end of a lengthy but highly entertaining segment in which Stewart closely analyzed the recent pizza dinner shared between Trump and fellow speculative presidential candidate Sarah Palin. In a rant in which Stewart channeled the ghost of Joe Pesci’s character in “Goodfellas,” the host cited two major issues with the Donald’s dinner.

First, there was the venue: Famous Famiglia, a generic chain pizza restaurant at 50th and Broadway, just north of Times Square. It was an underwhelming choice, especially in a city with a wealth of options for a delicious, authentic slice. Or, as Stewart put it in a mild jab at Palin, “I hate to use this term so close to ground zero, but we’re a bit of a pizza Mecca.”

But even more egregious was Trump’s rather fussy method of eating his slices: Stacked and (brace yourselves) with a fork. “Donald Trump, why don’t you just take that fork and stick it right in New York’s eye?” Stewart said, adopting a broad “New Yoik” accent.

No doubt Mayor de Blasio just lost Jon Stewart.  And with him the youth voters.  Say hello to a single term, Mayor de Blasio.  For how can the youth voters vote for a man who eats pizza with a fork?  That’s just too ‘1% ‘for their tastes.

Over Half of our Civil Servants in Congress are Millionaires

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 12th, 2014

 Week in Review

People who work in government were once called civil servants.  Because they worked for us.  Or, in today’s parlance, they were our bitch.  But over time our government workers no longer wanted to be called civil servants.  As they grew to feel to be our superiors.  Part of a privileged class.  Or, in today’s parlance, we became their bitch.  And if you don’t believe it just compare our earnings to theirs (see Now, most members of Congress are millionaires by Emily Heil posted 1/9/2014 on The Washington Post).

It’s official — Congress is a millionaires’ club. For the first time ever, most members of Congress are worth at least a cool million…

Also worth noting: the analysis shows Rep. Darrell Issa (with a $464 million fortune) is triumphantly back at the top of the list of wealthiest members, a spot the California Republican and car-alarm mogul had enjoyed for years, before being bumped by Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas).

So most members of Congress (i.e., our civil servants) are millionaires.  But note how they make it sound like all of these fat-cat politicians are Republicans.  Building on the stereotype that Republicans are for rich people.  While Democrats are for the working man.  However if you follow the link in this Washington Post (a paper that leans left) article you’ll come to this chart.

Median Net Worth of Current Congress Members R2

My, how about that?  Democrats have a higher median net worth than Republicans.  And Democrats got even richer than Republicans in 2012.  And yet they say the Republicans are the party of the rich?  Clearly that isn’t the case.  The Democrats are the party of the rich.  For they are richer than Republicans in Congress.  Despite the richest guy in Congress being a Republican.  Who, it should be noted, made his money in the private sector.  Not like so many others who go to Congress poor.  And leave millionaires.

Lower Standards for Women in Service Academies may play Role in Sexual Harassment and Assault

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 12th, 2014

Week in Review

We have antidiscrimination laws in place to prevent employers from hiring based on skin color instead of ability.  We drug test in sports to keep poorer athletes from using drugs to become better athletes.  As that isn’t fair to athletes who play by the rules.  People rail about unequal pay for women doing the same job as men.  Saying if they are doing the same job as a man they should get the same paycheck as a man.

We do these things to keep things fair.  So the best job applicant gets the job.  The best athlete wins the competition.  And everyone is paid according to their ability.  Without a lower pay scale for women.  Of course, all these ideas of fairness go out the window when it comes to the military (see Sexual harassment in the military: what female cadets have to say by Anna Mulrine, Christian Science Monitor, posted 1/10/2014 on Yahoo! News).

A congressionally mandated Pentagon report, released Friday, gauges sexual harassment and assault at America’s service academies and catalogs comments made by students during focus groups….

The focus-group comments of the cadets offer some insights into why the cadets themselves think the problem is pervasive, and how to best handle it.

When sexual harassment and assaults are prosecuted on campus, they think it might be a good idea to publicize them a bit more, even while protecting the anonymity of victims.

“When these things happen, my concern is, Are they being at all like hushed up?” one West Point cadet told Pentagon interviewers. “I think if we wanted to raise awareness and like say that this is a problem, why isn’t it being publicized when it does happen, even anonymously..?”

A clear theme that comes through in the survey, too, is that cadets of both genders feel that because the physical standards for female cadets are not as strenuous as those for male cadets, the men may have less respect for the women…

Another female cadet noted that because the physical standards are different for men and women at the academies, it is possible for women to get higher scores than men – even though they might not have to do as many push-ups or run a mile as quickly. “That eats him alive,” said one female cadet of a male cadet friend of hers.

Sexual harassment and assault are unacceptable everywhere.  There are no excuses or justification for bad/criminal behavior.  Even if you create a hostile environment by placing men and women together in a competitive environment that makes the men work harder than the women to get a passing grade.

The bigger issue is that the military is now trying to integrate women into combat roles.  Like infantry units that actually use physical strength to survive in a life and death situation.  And the stronger you are the better your chances are of surviving.  Which means anyone getting through military training by meeting lower standards has a lower chance of surviving in combat whenever physical strength determines the outcome of a fight.  Putting these women at risk.  And reducing the fighting strength of the unit.  Which will lose fighting strength once the weaker members (those meeting lower standards during training) are killed off.  Which doesn’t seem fair to the women.  Or the unit.

Marijuana is a Gateway to Hash Oil and Exploding Refrigerators

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 12th, 2014

Week in Review

The pro-decriminalize marijuana movement say it’s a harmless drug.  No worse than alcohol.  And that it doesn’t lead to harder drugs.  Well, it leads to at least one harder drug (see Marijuana ‘Hash Oil’ Explodes In Popularity, And Kitchens by Martin Kaste posted 1/10/2014 on npr).

If you think the recent liberalization of marijuana laws around the country is only about smoking leaves and buds, think again. For users younger than 25, “hash oil” is where it’s really at. This concentrated resin of marijuana is creating new public safety headaches — even in places where it’s legal.

There have always been forms of the substance, but the resins available today are much stronger than in years past. That’s due in part to the expertise developed by medical marijuana producers, who have learned how to make more potent versions of the oil…

Users smoke it, vaporize it and sometimes even eat it — those people sometimes refer to themselves as “tar babies.” High Times magazine jokingly implies that honey oil is best for people who already smoke regular pot every day. The stuff is so strong, it can cause less experienced users to throw up.

Some people make the resin at home. You just soak the pot in some kind of chemical solvent, which extracts the resin from the marijuana. Do-it-yourselfers like using butane, which can be purchased at most hardware stores.

The trouble is, solvents can catch fire — and even explode. Last year, the U.S. Fire Administration, a department of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, issued a bulletin warning of an increase in fires involving the production of hash oil.

In Washington state, which legalized marijuana for recreational use in 2012, authorities have noted an uptick in similar incidents. There was an explosion in a building in Seattle on Tuesday, and Verner O’Quinn, a sergeant with the Seattle Police Department’s bomb squad, blames solvents used in the production of hash oil…

He says fires in the Seattle area often come with a particular twist: They start with exploding refrigerators…

Most freezers have a fan, which then circulates the volatile butane fumes into the rest of the refrigerator, “down to where the compressor is,” he explains. “A small spark will set it off, and it generally blows the door off.”

Hash oil is so strong it is recommended only for people who smoke marijuana every day.  As it can make the inexperienced user vomit.  Which means you typically start with marijuana.  And when you master that you step up to the harder drug.  Hash oil.  The same way most heroin or meth addicts started smoking marijuana first before moving up to the harder heroin or meth.  Making marijuana a gateway drug to harder drugs.  Contrary to the pro-decriminalize marijuana movement.

If hash oil is where it’s at for users under 25 that means that they’re probably heavy pot smokers in their teens.  When they are in school.  Or should be in school.  Instead of cutting class to smoke marijuana.  Smoking everyday so they can handle the far stronger hash oil in their early twenties.  As they seek a stronger high after growing bored with just smoking marijuana.

The argument for stricter gun control laws is, of course, to protect the children.  Even if those laws save just one life.  By that logic we should recriminalize marijuana.  Even if it only prevents one more refrigerator from exploding in front of a child.  Of course the left will never do this.  Because relaxing the drug laws will endear the youth voters to the Democrat Party.  Helping them win elections even when they have nothing positive to run on.  So they will attack guns more than marijuana.  Even if marijuana destroys more lives than guns do.

Wal-Mart Health Care Plans are better than Obamacare Plans

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 12th, 2014

Week in Review

Government at all levels and unions hate Wal-Mart.  Because they are nonunion.  Which helps to keep their costs down.  Enabling them to offer such low prices.  And it’s those low prices that keep bringing customers through their doors.  Allowing them to make a decent profit.  So they can take care of their employees.  Including health care plans that are better than anything offered under Obamacare (see Surprise! Walmart health plan is cheaper, offers more coverage than Obamacare by RICHARD POLLOCK posted 1/7/2014 on the Washington Examiner).

For a monthly premium as low as roughly $40, an individual who is a Walmart HRA plan enrollee can obtain full-service coverage through a Blue Cross Blue Shield preferred provider organization. A family can get coverage for about $160 per month.

Unlike Obamacare, there are no income eligibility requirements. Age and gender do not alter premium rates. The company plan is the same for all of Walmart’s 1.1 million enrolled employees and their dependents, from its cashiers to its CEO.

A Journal of the American Medical Association analysis from September showed that unsubsidized Obamacare enrollees will face monthly premiums that are five to nine times higher than Walmart premiums.

JAMA found the unsubsidized premium for a nonsmoking gouple age 60 can cost $1,365 per month versus the Walmart cost of about $134 for the same couple.

The medical journal reported a 30-year-old smoker would pay up to $428 per month, in contrast to roughly $70 each month for a Walmart employee.

A family of four could pay a $962 premium, but the same Walmart family member would pay about $160.

Low premiums are not the only distinguishing feature of the Walmart plan. The retailer’s employees can use eight of the country’s most prestigious medical facilities, including the Mayo Clinic, Pennsylvania’s Geisinger Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic.

At these institutions, which Walmart calls “Centers of Excellence,” Walmart employees and their dependents can get free heart or spinal surgery. They can also get free knee and hip replacements at four hospitals nationwide.

Many top-rated Walmart hospitals — such as the Mayo and Cleveland clinics — are left out of most Obamacare exchange plans…

Slayton said the gap between doctor availability in Chicago under the Obamacare and Walmart plans is dramatic.

“You will notice there are 9,837 doctors [under Obamacare]. But the larger network is 24,904 doctors. Huge, huge difference,” he said.

Wall-Mart can give more for less under their health care plan than the government can under Obamacare.  Which proves that the private sector is better than the public sector in doing anything.  Even health care.  So if we want quality health care for everyone then we should get rid of Obamacare and have everyone join a Wal-Mart plan.  But, of course, that won’t happen.  For Obamacare is not about quality health care for everyone.  It’s about amassing power.  Which is why governments and unions attack Wal-Mart.  And we have Obamacare.  Because this transfers money and power from the private sector to the public sector and unions.  Allowing the privileged few to live better lives than the masses.
