Bush didn’t Lie but President Obama Did

 Politics 101

Bill Clinton said in a 2005 Interview that the 1981 Israeli Bombing of an Iraqi Nuke Plant was a Good Thing

“Bush lied people died.”  You heard that a lot all during President Bush’s presidency.  The left was shouting it from the mountain top.  “Bush lied people died!”  Saying that the dumbest man ever to occupy the White House fooled the most brilliant people in the world—liberal Democrats—into voting for the invasion of Iraq.  Because Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Saddam Hussein used WMDs on March 16, 1988.  It was the closing days of the Iran-Iraq War.  In the Kurdish town of Halabja in Northern Iraq.  Hussein was no friend of the Kurds.  And the Kurds had no love for Hussein.  Which is why Kurdish guerillas fought with the Iranians against Saddam Hussein.  And after the Iranians took this Kurdish town in northern Iraq Hussein had no problem with committing an act of genocide in Halabja.  Which he did on March 16, 1988.  The largest chemical attack against a civilian population in history.

On June 7, 1981, Israel carried out a surprise bombing of an Iraqi nuclear reactor under construction.  For they feared a Saddam Hussein with nuclear weapons.  During the Persian Gulf War the Americans bombed what was left of that nuclear reactor.  For they, too, feared a Saddam Hussein with nuclear weapons.  Though publicly condemned by pretty much everyone at the time of the bombing most were probably happy the Israelis did that unpleasant task for them.  Even Bill Clinton said in a 2005 interview that the bombing was a good thing.

Saddam Hussein violated the Terms of the Gulf War Cease Fire by not Documenting the Destruction of his WMDs

The Congress saw the same intelligence the Bush administration saw in the run-up to the Iraq War.  It was so convincing that Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Harry Reid voted to give George W. Bush the authority to invade Iraq.  Who all feared a Saddam Hussein with WMDs.  For as bad as 9/11 was it could have been worse if the terrorists had WMDs.  Hussein had WMDs.  And he had no moral compunction against using them.  As proven by Halabja.  Making him a very dangerous man in a world where terrorists who hate America are in the market for WMDs.

So there was a very strong case against Saddam Hussein.  Especially when you throw in his violation of the terms of the Gulf War cease fire agreement.  In particular the documentation of his destruction of his WMDs that he agreed to do.  Which was a tantamount admission of having them.  WMDs.  But he didn’t document the destruction of his WMD stockpiles.  Because he did not destroy them.  Which meant one thing.  He still had weapons of mass destruction.  Which is probably why Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Harry Reid voted to give George W. Bush the authority to invade Iraq.  For they were terrified…of being on the wrong side of history when those WMDs they knew he had were found.

Well, we found no WMDs in Iraq.  Probably because Hussein shipped them off to Syria for safekeeping.  Assuming he would remain in power after the Iraq War.  Just as he remained in power after the Gulf War.  After the invasion nonsense was done he could go to Syria and take his WMDs back.  And perhaps get them into the hands of a terrorist for use against an American city.  To retaliate for the big headache George W. Bush gave him.  Of course his subsequent capture and execution put a wrench into all future plans he may have had.

Liberals play Fast and Loose with the Truth as Telling the Truth rarely helps the Liberal Agenda

President Obama made some promises about Obamacare during the Affordable Care Act debate.  Because the people were against it.  They didn’t want anything near quasi national health care.  So he kept saying that Obamacare wasn’t a government takeover of our health care system.  And that it would actually make the private health insurance industry better.  It would cover more.  While costing less.  And the best thing about the Affordable Care Act was this (see Obama’s pledge that ‘no one will take away’ your health plan by Glenn Kessler posted 10/30/2013 on The Washington Post).

“That means that no matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise to the American people: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period. If you like your health-care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health-care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what.”

The Fact Checker on The Washington Post gave this statement Four Pinocchios.  Their highest level of dishonesty.   Or ‘whoppers’.  As About The Fact Checker calls Four Pinocchios.  Basically saying the president lied about Obamacare to get the Affordable Care Act passed into law.  And lied again to win reelection.  For the election results may have been different if he had told the truth.  If he had said that some will lose their doctors and some will lose their health-care plan.  If he had said that premiums and deductibles would rise.  If he had would the people who had insurance and doctors they liked vote for him?  No.  Probably not.

So President Obama and the Democrats told lies that deceived a great many people to get what he couldn’t get by telling the truth.  Obamacare.  One of the most divisive pieces of legislation ever passed in Congress.  Passed on purely partisan lines.  No Republicans voted for the Affordable Care Act.  Unlike the legislation that gave George W. Bush the authority to invade Iraq.  Which had bipartisan support.  With both Republicans and Democrats voting for it.  Yet the left said, “Bush lied people died.”  But when it comes to President Obama’s flagrant lies about the Affordable Care Act all you hear are crickets from the left.  Because for them the truth is whatever they say it is.  And a lie is whatever they say it is.  For the only way to pass their liberal agenda is to play fast and loose with the truth.  As telling the truth rarely helps the liberal agenda.

Feedback Loop Control System

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 30th, 2013

Technology 101

Living through Winters became easier with Thermostats

When man discovered how to make fire it changed where we could live.  We no longer had to follow the food south when winter came.  We could stay through the winter.  And build a home.  As long as we could store enough food for the winter.  And had fire to stay warm.  To prevent our dying from exposure to the cold.

There’s nothing like sitting around a campfire.  It’s warm.  And cozy.  In large part because it’s outside.  So the smoke, soot and ash stayed outside.  It wasn’t always like that, though.  We used to bring that campfire inside the home.  With a hole in the roof for the smoke.  And families slept around the fire.  Together.  Even as some fornicated.  To propagate the species.  But that wasn’t the worst part about living around an indoor campfire.

Your distance from the fire determined how hot or cold you were.  And it was very hot by it.  Not so hot away from it.  Especially with a hole in the roof.  Worst, everyone got colder as the fire burned out.  Meaning someone had to get up to start a new fire.  The hard way.  Creating an ember.  Using it to start some kindling burning.  Then adding larger sticks and branches onto the kindling until they started to burn.  Which was a lot harder than turning the thermostat to ‘heat’ at the beginning of the heating season and forgetting about it.  Then turning it to ‘off’ at the end of the heating season.

A Feedback Loop Control System measures the Output of a System and Compares it to a Desired Output

Replacing the indoor campfire with a boiler or furnace made life a lot simpler.  For with a supply of fuel (natural gas, fuel oil, electricity, etc.) the fire never burned itself out.  And you never had to get up to start a new one.  Of course, that created another problem.  Shutting it off.

Boilers and furnaces are very efficient today.  They produce a lot of heat.  And if you let them run all day long it would become like a hot summer day inside your house.  Something we don’t want.  Which is why we use air conditioners on hot summer days.  So heating systems can’t run all day long.  But we can’t keep getting up all night to turn it off when we’re too hot.  And turning it back on when we’re too cold.  Which is why we developed the feedback loop control system.

We did not develop the feedback loop control system for our heating systems.  Our heating systems are just one of many things we control with a feedback loop control system.  Which is basically measuring the output of a system and comparing it to a desired output.  For example, if we want to sleep under a cozy warm blanket we may set the ‘set-point’ to 68 degrees (on the thermostat).  The heating system will run and measure the actual temperature (at the thermostat) and compare it to the desired set-point.  That’s the feedback loop.  If the actual temperature is below the desired set-point (68 degrees in our example) the heat stays on.  Once the actual temperature equals the set-point the heat shuts off.

The Autopilot System includes Independent Control Systems for Speed, Heading and Altitude

Speed control on a car is another example of a feedback loop control system.  But this control system is a little more complex than a thermostat turning a heating system on and off.  As it doesn’t shut the engine off once the car reaches the set-point speed.  If it did the speed would immediately begin to fall below the set-point.  Also, a car’s speed varies due to terrain.  Gravity speeds the car when it’s going downhill.  And slows it down when it’s going uphill.  The speed controller continuously measures the car’s actual speed and subtracts it from the set-point.  If the number is negative the controller moves the vehicle’s throttle one way.  If it’s positive it moves the throttle in the other way.  The greater the difference the greater the movement.  And it keeps making these speed ‘corrections’ until the difference between the actual speed and the set-point is reduced to zero.

Though more complex than a heating thermostat the speed control on a car is pretty simple.  It has one input (speed).  And one output (throttle adjustment).  Now an airplane has a far more complex control system.  Often called just ‘autopilot’.  When it is actually multiple systems.  There is an auto-speed system that measures air speed and adjusts engine throttles.  There is a heading control system that measures the aircraft’s heading and adjusts the ailerons to adjust course heading.  There is an altitude control system that measures altitude and adjusts the elevators to adjust altitude.  And systems that measure and correct pitch and yaw.  Pilots enter set-points for each of these in the autopilot console.  And these control systems constantly measure actual readings (speed, heading and altitude) and compares them to the set-points in the autopilot console and adjusts the appropriate flight controls as necessary.

Unlike a car or an airplane a building doesn’t move from point A to point B.  Yet they often have more complex control systems than autopilot systems on airplanes.  With thousands of inputs and outputs.  For example, in the summer there’s chilled water temperature, heating hot water temperature (for the summer boiler), supply air pressure, return air pressure, outdoor air pressure, indoor air pressure, outdoor temperature, outdoor humidity, indoor temperature (at numerous locations), indoor humidity, etc.  Thousands of inputs.  And thousands of outputs.  And unlike an airplane these are all integrated into one control system.  To produce a comfortable temperature in the building.  Maintain indoor air quality.  Keep humidity levels below what is uncomfortable and possibly damaging to electronic systems.  And prevent mold from growing.  But not keep it too dry that people suffer static sparks, dry eyes, dry nasal cavities that can lead to nose bleeds, dry and cracked skin, etc.  To prevent a blast of air hitting people when they open a door.  To keep the cold winter air from entering the building through cracks and spaces around doors and windows.  And a whole lot more.  Far more than the thermostat in our homes that turns our heating system on and off.

Nero, Hitler and Obama and the Lies they Told

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 29th, 2013

History 101

Nero used the Great Fire of Rome to rebuild Rome to his Liking and to Persecute Christians

Roman emperor Nero does not have the greatest of reputations.  For instance, a popular story about him is that he fiddled while Rome burned.  Of course he didn’t fiddle.  For the fiddle didn’t exist yet.  But the lyre did.  And he could play the lyre.  In fact, he even composed music for the lyre.  But the historical record is a little sparse to say definitely what happened when Rome burned.

That said Nero was not all that dismayed that Rome burnt.  Because he didn’t like the way the city looked.  And he wanted to rebuild Rome into a glorious city befitting him.  And the fire allowed him do just that.  For to build the city Nero envisioned required that he first destroy the city that was there.  And the fire conveniently did that for him.

But it did more.  The year was 64 anno Domini.  In the year of our Lord.  Being that Jesus of Nazareth lived temporally until His thirties that puts the Great Fire of Rome about 30 years after His death.  And during the rise of those pesky Christians that Nero really didn’t like.  Who worshipped Jesus as God.  And not him.  Nero.  Putting crazy thoughts into people’s heads.  That Nero wasn’t God.  So Nero blamed the Great Fire of Rome on the Christians.  Allowing him to torture them.  And execute them.  Earning the moniker of the first persecutor of Christians.  So Nero profited well from the Great Fire of Rome.  He got his new city.  And he suppressed the ascendancy of those pesky Christians.

Adolf Hitler used the Reichstag Fire to make the way Clear for the New Nazi Germany

After World War I Germany was reeling.  Reparations were crippling her.  There was hyperinflation.  Germans were struggling for food and heat.  Creating the perfect political climate for a guy like Adolf Hitler to rise in politics.  After a failed attempt to seize power—the Beer Hall Putsch—he turned to legal channels to secure power.  Winning elections.  In time the Nazi Party rose in prominence.  But it could not win a majority in the German Parliament.  Until, that is, the Reichstag fire.

Following World War I Europe was being pulled between two political ideologies.  Fascism.  And communism.  Both were brutal dictatorships.  While both proclaimed to be for the people.  Well, Adolf Hitler’s Nazis were fascists.  Who were sharing power with the communists.  But they didn’t want to share power with the communists.  Which they didn’t have to do after the Reichstag fire.

Hitler blamed the communists for the fire.  He persuaded President Hindenburg to pass an emergency decree.  Suspending civil liberties.  And then turned the power of the state against the Communist Party.  Clearing the way for the rise of the Nazis to power.  Historians still debate who set that fire today.  But one thing it did was clear the last obstacle in the way of the Nazis.  The communists.  With the Communist Party outlawed the Nazis no longer had to share power with them.  Allowing them to rise to a majority in Parliament.  And from there it was but a short path to Hitler’s absolute power.  Thanks to a fire that got rid of the old.  And made way for the new.

President Obama is On the Record saying that he is a Proponent of Single-Payer Universal Health Care

The American left has longed wanted national health care.  For it is the Holy Grail of socialist/communist states.  As it touches everyone.  And makes everyone dependent on the state.  All brutal dictatorships have/had national health care.  Cuba.  North Korea.  The Soviet Union.  Nazi Germany.  These states also were/are anti-capitalist.  So anti-capitalism and national health care go hand-in-hand.  That is, the only way to have national health care is to give up some capitalism.

Which is a problem for the proponents of national health care.  For people like their capitalism.  And the liberty and high standards of living it gives them.  So proponents of national health care can’t be honest when they’re trying to take away people’s health insurance.  So they lie (see ‘Keep Your Plan’ Vow False; Media Knew It by Investor’s Business Daily posted 10/29/2013 on Yahoo! Finance included here in its entirety).

NBC News on Monday claimed to have uncovered evidence that President Obama knew all along that his promise that “you can keep your health plan” under ObamaCare wasn’t true. The story came out just as millions across the country are getting cancellation notices from their insurance companies.

“Buried in ObamaCare regulations from July 2010,” NBC said, is an estimate that shows “the administration knew that more than 40% to 67% of those in the individual market would not be able to keep their plans, even if they liked them.

Although ObamaCare included a provision meant to grandfather health plans sold before 2010, regulators defined what “grandfathered” meant so narrowly that most plans wouldn’t qualify.

Yet Obama went on repeating this promise, saying, as he did in June 2012, that “if you’re one of the 250 million Americans who already (has) health insurance, you will keep your health insurance.

That the administration knew this wasn’t true is troubling.

But the mainstream press also knew — or should have known — that Obama’s “you can keep your plan” promise was phony. It just didn’t bother to report on it at the time.

As far back as early 2010, health reform experts, Republican lawmakers and conservative policy analysts had been citing the same 40% to 67% figure that NBC News claims to have unearthed: The Commonwealth Fund, a favorite source for health care reporters, pointed out in a June 22, 2010, blog post that the administration “estimated that between 40% and 67% of health plans will relinquish grandfathered status” by 2013, meaning that millions of plans would get canceled.

An October 2010 article in the widely read Health Affairs said that, in addition to those losses, “the Obama administration has projected that between 39% and 69% of employer group plans” and “up to 80%” of small business plans would be canceled.

On Sept. 22, 2010, Sen. Mike Enzi , R-Wyo., said forcing 80% of small firms to change plans “breaks the president’s promise” about keeping your health plan.

In May 2011, a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey found that 51% of employers said they would have to drop plans and buy new ones because of ObamaCare.

An Aug. 29, 2011, memo by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor noted that “by the administration’s own estimates, 40% to 67% of individual insurance plans” will be canceled.

In a December 2011 paper, the Galen Institute’s Grace-Marie Turner noted that “millions of people are losing the coverage they have now, and tens of millions more will surely follow.

(IBD also covered this extensively at the time.) In addition, the Congressional Budget Office had reported in March 2010 that ObamaCare could cause 4 million to lose their employer-provided health insurance. It later raised that to 7 million, and admitted the number could be 20 million.

And years ago, Republicans like Enzi and Cantor pushed ObamaCare changes that would have prevented the massive cancellations going on today.

But with a few rare exceptions, the mainstream press completely ignored evidence that millions would be forced to drop their current insurance.

Now news reports are rife with stories of angry families getting insurance cancellation notices, learning that ObamaCare-approved plans will cost far more, and wondering why they didn’t know this was coming.

On Monday, Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., introduced a bill aimed at preventing these cancellations. The one-page bill, “The Keep Your Health Plan Act,” states simply that any health plan sold this year to the individual can also be sold next year.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., has a similar bill in the Senate.

The question is whether Senate Democrats will block this bill — as they have almost every other GOP-sponsored ObamaCare bill — in the face of rising public anger about Obama’s misleading and now broken promise.

President Obama doesn’t like the existing health care system.  And is on the record saying that he is a proponent of single-payer universal health care.

So to get what he wants he first has to destroy the old.  Private health insurance.  And then set up the new.  Obamacare.  His pathway to single-payer universal health care.  Something the American people don’t want.  So he lied to the American people.  And created Obamacare to destroy the one obstacle in his way.  The private health insurance industry.  Then he can act against the will of the people.  And get what HE wants.  Power.  Through legal means.  Just like Hitler.  Who was also a good liar.  And, thankfully, that’s where the similarities end.  Well, that.  And destroying their countries.  For awhile, at least.

Cash Piñatas and Obamacare

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 28th, 2013

Economics 101

Health Insurance provides Financial Protection from Risk unlike Obamacare

A lot of people are talking about Obamacare.  The poor website launch.  People losing the insurance policies and doctors they liked and wanted to keep.  Higher insurance premiums.  And higher deductibles.  All of which conflicts with what President Obama had promised.

So there are problems.  And people are becoming less enamored with Obamacare now that it is personally touching their lives.  But there is a bigger problem.  Obamacare isn’t insurance.  And that’s what a lot of people don’t even understand.  Even some insurance agents.  Who may only see those higher premium prices and think Obamacare is a one-way ticket to easy street.  But if you understand insurance, economics and history you’ll see it’s not.  So what is insurance?  Here’s a definition from Investopedia:

A contract (policy) in which an individual or entity receives financial protection or reimbursement against losses from an insurance company. The company pools clients’ risks to make payments more affordable for the insured.

The key word in this definition is ‘risk’.  Insurance provides financial protection from risk.  Obamacare doesn’t do that.  It forces people to pay for things they have no risk exposure to.  For example, an older couple with adult children still needs pediatric coverage on their policy.  Which just increases the cost of their insurance.  While providing no financial protection from this particular risk.  Sick children.

Premiums and Deductibles are Soaring to herd the Young and Healthy into the Government Exchanges

So why is Obamacare raising health insurance premiums?  To pay for people who don’t pay into the insurance pool.  The poor.  And the very sick who can’t afford health care let alone health insurance.  The higher premiums people are paying go to them.  This is a cost transfer.  From a higher income group to a lower income group.  Or in other words, a redistribution of wealth.  From those according to ability to those according to need.

So the president wasn’t exactly telling the truth about keeping your insurance and doctor if you wanted to.  This can’t happen under Obamacare.  Because to redistribute wealth you need to take it away from someone.  And guess who that someone must be to make Obamacare work?  The young and healthy who are buying health insurance.  Those people who pay into the insurance pool for financial protection from risk.  But who are generally healthy and receive no benefits from the insurance pool.  Who President Obama and the Democrats look at as cash piñatas.  Which they can’t whack open if they have private insurance policies.

This is why these people must lose the policies and doctors they like.  And why premiums and deductibles are soaring.  To herd these cash piñatas into the government exchanges.  Where the government can collect their insurance premiums.  And redistribute it.  While those high deductibles keep those premiums going out as benefits to the cash piñatas to a minimum.

The Young and Healthy choosing Medicaid over Obamacare

Of course, there is a flaw in this grand strategy.  Arrogance.  The government believing that young and healthy people will just stand there while the government whacks them open to get their cash.  Which they aren’t.  And it’s just not because the Obamacare website is a disaster.  It’s because a lot of these people are choosing Medicaid.  The health care program for the poor.

Medicaid enrollments are far outpacing Obamacare enrollments.  By a huge number.  Which is a big problem.  Because Medicaid enrollees don’t pay insurance premiums.  And they are not subject to deductibles.  Because they are poor and can’t afford to pay anything out of pocket.  So instead of adding to the insurance pool these cash piñatas will take from the pool.  And that won’t change when they fix the broken website.  Which is why it is a fatal flaw.

Compounding this problem is the President’s economic policies that have given us the worst economic recovery since that following the Great Depression.  Since President Obama assumed office his policies have forced approximately 10 million people from the labor force.  Unemployed, it is unlikely that they will be able to afford health insurance.  And probably will enroll in Medicaid, too.  If they haven’t already.  So Obamacare isn’t going to work as-is.  The question is, what will they do next?  Other than blame the greedy insurance companies?  Whose cooperation in this redistribution of wealth scheme will lead to their own demise.  For as more and more people can’t afford those expensive insurance policies they’ll either turn to Medicaid.  Or demand national health care.  Which people don’t need insurance companies to have.

As Summer approaches in Australia Women risk Great Harm so Men find them Sexy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 27th, 2013

Week in Review

The left say the Republicans have a war on women.  Because they oppose free birth control.  Oppose abortion on demand.  And prefer women to marry instead of exploring and enjoying their sexuality.  Putting their sexuality out there.  Objectifying themselves.  In other words, Republicans have a war on women because they don’t treat women as sexual objects.  Or actively help them to please men.

It is interesting how the left has gotten women to believe that sexualizing themselves equates to liberation and empowerment.  And it’s not just in America.  In advanced economies throughout the world where women can have careers and liberties like men they still want to be pretty and sexually attractive for men (see Crash and burn bikini warning by Sonia Kohlbacher posted 10/26/2013 on Perth Now).

Experts are warning women against going to extremes chasing “unrealistic” body goals ahead of summer.

Punishing exercise regimes and a diet stripped to the bare essentials could trigger long-term health issues, according to Australian Medical Association state president Richard Choong…

He said the “bombardment” of unrealistic body images in shop windows and the media in the lead-up to summer put a lot of pressure on women…

The Pilates Fitness Institute director Frances Cahill said there is always a bump in new female members heading into summer. She put it down to fears about how they will look in a bikini at the beach.

“Even though we all have the best intentions of keeping up our Miranda Kerr healthy living habits all year round, winter tends to make it harder to stay dedicated to our usual exercise routine,” she said.

Ms Cahill said it was important to remember everyone came in different shapes and sizes.

Once upon a time women did this to snag themselves a rich husband.  Some may still do this.  But a lot do this for no other reason than wanting to be sexy.  Call it the hard-wiring of our DNA to attract the opposite sex.  Or societal decay as we become less religious and more hedonistic.  Whatever the reason women are risking great harm to be sexy.  And it’s not the right that’s trying to get them to do this.  Yet it’s the right that has a war on women.  Go figure.

Federal Regulators find no Problem with Tesla Battery Design after one Burst into Flames this Month

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 27th, 2013

Week in Review

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a state-of-the-art fuel-efficient intercontinental jetliner.  Something that made airlines dealing with razor-thin margins and rising fuel prices stand up and take notice.  This was an airplane that they wanted.  And how did they squeeze these fuel savings out of the Dreamliner?  Well, they used more composite materials than before.  Reducing the amount of heavier metals.  And they eliminated some other ‘heavy’ metal in a way that increased engine efficiency.  By eliminating pneumatic systems and replacing them with electric systems.  Which eliminated the bleed air system that bled efficiency from the jet engines.  And removing all the metal ductwork that piped that hot pressurized air throughout the aircraft.  Such as to the anti-icing systems in the wings.  Which they replaced with electric heaters.

The Boeing 787 is the most electric plane in commercial aviation.  It uses an enormous amount of electric power.  Which requires powerful backup batteries.  Lithium-ion batteries.  That have a very high energy density.  Created from powerful chemical reactions.  Requiring complex controllers to regulate the power, temperature and pressure in the batteries to try and prevent a ‘thermal runaway’.  Especially during charging.  Which happened a few times.  Starting a fire or two.  Prompting the FAA to action.  And grounding the entire 787 Dreamliner fleet because of these high energy density batteries.

Electric cars also use these high energy density batteries.  And some of them have caught fire.  But federal regulators aren’t taking any electric cars off of the street (see Tesla dodges full investigation after fiery crash by Charles Riley posted 10/25/2013 on CNNMoney).

Federal regulators have decided not to open an official investigation into the crash of a Tesla Model S earlier this month that resulted in a fire in the electric car’s battery section.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that while it continually reviews vehicle complaints, the crash had not led to the discovery of any safety faults…

Auto blog Jalopnik posted photos and videos of the Seattle-area accident in early October, showing an electric Tesla Model S engulfed in flames…

Musk’s 560-word post explained the accident in his usual painstaking detail. He said the cause of the accident appeared to be a piece of metal that fell off of a semi-trailer and struck the Model S.

A fire then erupted in the car’s front battery section, but was contained to that area, the CEO wrote. No flames entered the passenger compartment.

Musk also tried to reassure his readers. “There should be absolutely zero doubt that it is safer to power a car with a battery than a large tank of highly flammable liquid,” he wrote.

Well, one thing about our roads.  They are clean as a whistle.  So although there was a piece of metal once there will never be another piece of metal on our roads.  So there is no need to add some heavy metal under the Tesla to protect the battery from pieces of metal thrown up from the road.  Increasing the weight of the electric car.  Decreasing its range.  Further discouraging people from buying them.

If that piece of metal had hit a gas tank it may have dented it.  It may have even caused it to leak.  But it wouldn’t have burst into flames.  As the millions of cars driving on our metal-strewn roads testify to every day.  Gasoline stored in a tank slung underneath a car is pretty safe.  For it’s not what we combust in our engine.  No.  First we must aerosolize the liquid into a vapor.  Mix it with oxygen.  Compress it (greatly increasing its temperature).  Then ignite it with an electric spark.  And only then will it explode.  For an explosion needs heat and pressure.  Which isn’t present in a gas tank under normal conditions.  But they do exist in lithium-ion batteries under normal conditions.  Which is why they explode.  And burst into flames.

The Obama Administration fired Obamacare Telephone Operator for Gross Telling of the Truth

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 27th, 2013

Week in Review

Following the Seven Years’ War the British Empire was in debt.  And needed to raise some money.  The American colonists benefited well from the British victories over the French.  So they turned to the American colonists for their funding woes.

Now the British citizens in the American colonies had no representation in Parliament.  So they had no say in taxing matters.  Unlike British citizens on the other side of the Atlantic.  Basically, the British in the American colonies were second class British citizens.  Which ultimately led to their declaring their independence from the British Crown.  And why Thomas Jefferson wrote “all men are created equal.”  And the Founding Fathers believed this. Unlike the current administration (see White House Declares Truth Telling A Firing Offense Fires Phone Operator For Telling Truth by IBD Editorials posted 10/25/2013 on Investors).

To date, no one in the Obama administration has been fired for the Hindenburg-like Affordable Care Act. Oh, wait, there is one: The lowly telephone operator who told the truth about it to Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

One can be forgiven for wondering if this White House has some wimpy aversion to firing anyone, given the scale of unpunished blundering seen in the Benghazi attack, the IRS suppression of political dissent, the Fast and Furious gunrunning scandal and now the incompetence of the ObamaCare rollout.

But there does seem to be one offense where a red line has been drawn: telling the truth. That’s what cost ObamaCare telephone operator Earline Davis her job…

Yet as Davis was punished for rules she knew nothing about, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who repeatedly lied to Congress and the American people about the readiness of the ObamaCare exchanges, and who had been excused earlier for illegal electioneering on the grounds she didn’t know the rules — remains on the job.

The Obama administration is less like the Founding Fathers and more like George Orwell’s Animal Farm.  With President Obama playing the role of Napoleon.  Who eventually reduces the Seven Commandments of Animalism to one.  “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”  Just like in the Obama administration.  Where Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is more equal than a lowly telephone operator.  And everyone in the Obama administration is more equal than those outside of the Obama administration.  At least based on their actions.

The Environmental Left is killing People with Grocery Bags

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 27th, 2013

Week in Review

We’ve been hearing ‘paper or plastic’ at the grocery store for awhile now.  Soon it will be ‘paper, plastic or food-borne illness’ (see Tax on shopping bags ‘will lead to more food poisoning’ by Graeme Paton posted 10/27/2013 on The Telegraph).

An increase in the use of “bags for life” could lead to a spike in illness rates as shoppers place new items in bags already used to store fresh meat and raw vegetables, it was claimed.

The comments come amid growing pressure on families to reuse plastic bags as part of an environmental drive.

Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, announced plans to charge 5p for plastic bags in England from 2015 to discourage the use of multiple bags…

But leading scientists are warning that the move represents a serious risk to public health because reused bags are often “heavily contaminated” with bacteria.

“Vegetables that come into contact with the inside of the bags could easily be contaminated,” he said.

He said many shoppers stored empty bags in the boot of the car but added: “The warm environment of cars make them the worst place as far as bacteria is concerned.

“One bacteria cell will quickly become thousands.

“If people are going to have to pay for bags and re-use them my concern is we’re creating a high risk of food poisoning. At the very least people have to be given advice to clean these bags every time they use them.”

The conclusions follow research by Pennsylvania University, which found a 25 per cent increase hospital admissions for bacterial infections such as E. coli after San Francisco banned plastic bags.

The study said: “The San Francisco ban is associated with a 46 per cent increase in deaths from food-borne illness to a rate of approximately 12 deaths per year.”

If we use the left’s logic in the gun control debate then we must continue to use single-use plastic bags.  Because they say we should ban guns even if it saves only one life.  Well, using single-use plastic bags will save up to 12 lives a year in San Francisco.  So keep on using plastic.  Based on the left’s logic.

Of course the left doesn’t care about people dying from bacterial infections.  For they have no problem with people dying.  For them it’s a small price to pay to advance their agenda.  Which is the only thing important to them.  Unless they back away from this policy agenda.  And let people use safe shopping bags.  Will they?  Time will tell.  But don’t hold your breath.  For when it comes to the environment they pretty much live by the maxim ‘save the planet, kill man’.  As they want us to drive tiny little cars that will get crushed by bigger vehicles.  Use all-electric cars that may run out of charge in a bad neighborhood or in rush hour traffic during a blizzard.  And reuse shopping bags that will give us fatal food poisoning.

Obamacare forces Seniors to give up their Doctors and Medicare Advantage

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 27th, 2013

Week in Review

During the 2012 campaign the Obama campaign attacked Mitt Romney as a guy that didn’t care if people with cancer lost their health insurance.  In fact, the company he co-founded, Bain Capital, was accused of being so heartless that it wanted people to die from cancer.

An employee of a steel plant lost his job and his health insurance after Bain took over the failing company and later closed the plant.  And because of this his wife died from cancer.  Even though she had lost her health insurance before the plant had closed.  Yet this one cancer death was very effective in demonizing Mitt Romney during the 2012 campaign.  Ironically, President Obama will willingly let many people die from cancer to achieve a political end; national health care (see Elderly patients sick over losing doctors under ObamaCare by Carl Campanile posted 10/25/2013 on the New York Post).

Elderly New Yorkers are in a panic after getting notices that insurance companies are booting their doctors from the Medicare Advantage program as a result of the shifting medical landscape under ObamaCare.

That leaves patients with unenviable choices: keep the same insurance plan and find another doctor, pay out of pocket or look for another plan where their physician is a member…

The [sic] are 2.6 million elderly New Yorkers who receive Medicare, the public heath [sic]-insurance program for the elderly.

But one in three patients — nearly 900,000 — are enrolled in Advantage, Medicare HMOs run by private insurers…

Federal funding to Medicare Advantage is being pared back by billions of dollars in coming years under the national Affordable Care Act. Obama said spending on the program was higher than regular Medicare and unsustainable.

President Obama said if you like your insurance you can keep your insurance.  And if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor.  Unless, of course, he wants to gut Medicare Advantage to pay for Obamacare.

He screws his young supporters by forcing them under penalty of law to buy health insurance to pay for the old and sick.  And now he’s screwing the old and sick by taking away their doctors and health insurance.  If he’s willing to screw two large voting blocks that support him imagine what he’ll do to people he doesn’t like.  Like Republicans, conservatives and Tea Party members.  The same conservative group that got special IRS scrutiny during the 2012 campaign.  An election where the Republican base did not turn out like they did during the 2010 elections.  Now imagine how eager they’ll want to be politically active when in addition to special IRS scrutiny the government can take away their doctor.  And deny them treatment for their health problems.  If you want a glimpse into that world you can look here.

Or you can look here.

It can get a little scary when the state becomes all powerful.  Some people at the Founding wanted a more powerful government.  For they were all students of the Enlightenment.  And believed that only like-minded people would ascend to government.  But the Founding Fathers knew their history.  And knew better.  No person should be trusted with power.  For what Lord Acton wrote in 1887 is as true today as it was throughout history.  “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.”

Does rise in Knife crime call for Knife-Control Legislation?

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 26th, 2013

Week in Review

Every time there is a killing involving a gun the left tries to revive the gun control debate.  But they say nothing about box cutters (see Teen ‘infatuated’ with murdered teacher by Bob Fredericks posted 10/24/2013 on the New York Post).

The 14-year old accused of fatally slashing pretty math teacher Colleen Ritzer may have been infatuated with her and snapped when she spurned his advances, according to a new report Thursday…

Chism confessed to cops that he slashed her throat with a box cutter after following her into a women’s restroom at the school, a Boston TV station reported Thursday.

Or knives (see 5 Dead in Brooklyn Stabbing by EMMA G. FITZSIMMONS posted 10/27/2013 on The New York Times).

Five people were killed in a stabbing in Brooklyn on Saturday night, officials said.

Does the left try to restrict box-cutter and knife ownership?  No.  Yet there were probably more knife deaths in New York this past week than gun deaths.  Of course they would say it wasn’t the box-cutter or the knife that killed these people.  It was the people using these implements that killed these people.  For the vast majority of box-cutter owners and knife owners use these cutting implements responsibly.  Just like gun owners.  But gun owners will never get that consideration.

If these victims had a gun these grisly murders might not have been.  For a gun takes away the advantage of a bigger and stronger assailant.  So someone of a smaller physical stature doesn’t have to be a victim.  And it lets them engage a person with a knife BEFORE the knife-wielding attacker can get close enough to use that knife.  Giving the advantage to the defender in a knife attack.  Which gun control legislation will take away.  Giving the advantage back to the bad guy.
