Federal Obamacare Exemption proves Congress and their Staff are more Equal than us Poor Schmucks

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 4th, 2013

Week in Review

No one appears to like Obamacare.  But those with friends in high places can do something about it.  Unlike the rest of us (see Congress to get Obamacare fix: reports by Michael Kitchen posted 8/2/2013 on Market Watch).

The White House has approved a deal that will create a regulatory fix for members of Congress and their staff related to some of the provisions of the Affordable Care Act, according to media reports. Under the law, popularly referred to as Obamacare, lawmakers and their aides were required to source health insurance “created” by the law or offered through one of its exchanges; and without the subsidies they currently have, the members of Congress would have faced thousands of dollars in additional premium payments each year, the reports said.

These members of Congress and their staff have health care plans that put other Cadillac health care plans to shame.  And because they are so good they are very, very expensive.  With premiums costing tens of thousands a year for a family.  Because these are so expensive it would be unfair to have these people pay for them out of their pocket.  So the government used tax dollars to provide a subsidy for them.  About 75% of the cost of these policies.

Now, while the rest of us poor schmucks can’t keep the plans we like and/or are seeing our insurance premiums go up by great amounts guess who gets to keep the plans they have without having to pay an additional dime?  Not us poor schmucks.  Nope.  But those who are apparently more equal than us poor schmucks.  Those in the federal government.  America’s aristocracy.

If you’re keeping count so far pretty much everyone on the left that helped pass Obamacare into legislation has received or is asking for an exemption from this atrocious piece of legislation.  And guess where the best doctors are going to want to work?  Not in the hospitals that take care of us poor schmucks with assembly line efficiency.  No.  They’ll be working in the luxury health care suites that cater to America’s aristocracy.

If you’ve ever wondered what it was like in the Old World with a noble class and a peasant class here’s your chance to experience it.  As you will soon be living it.  The more equal they make everyone else beneath them the more like a peasant class we’ll become.  And this is the ultimate purpose of Obamacare.  To make us their bitch.

According to a Baltimore School Teacher it’s not Bad Teachers but Bad Students that are the Problem

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 4th, 2013

Week in Review

The left keeps saying we need to have a dialog on race.  Which means do nothing, excuse bad behavior and spend more money.  That’s their idea of dialog.  Because for them there’s nothing to talk about.  For when it comes to racial issues they have two simple rules.  Rule #1:  Whites are to blame.  Rule #2: When blacks are to blame see Rule #1.  Why?  To curry favor in the black community.  To get them to vote for them.  And that’s all they care about.  Even if they worsen the condition in the black community in the process.  Because they don’t care about the plight of black people.  They just want their votes.

In today’s society you cannot criticize blacks behaving badly without the left calling you a racist.  Even if you don’t mention race.  If you say ‘Joe is behaving badly’ and Joe is black then your comment ‘Joe is behaving badly’ reeks of racism.  Because of this people are reluctant to criticize blacks behaving badly.  Because it will bring the wrath of the left down upon you.  Stirring up trouble for you where you work and where you live.  Which is the last thing most people want.  So they don’t criticize blacks behaving badly.  Which only encourages some blacks to behave badly (see A brave Baltimore teacher speaks the truth about schools, students by GREGORY KANE posted 8/1/2013 on the Washington Examiner).

Dave Miceli doesn’t know me from a hole in the ground, but he’s my new hero.

Anyone that can dredge up the guts to teach in Baltimore’s public schools automatically becomes a candidate for hero status in my book, especially if said anyone has taught in these schools for 20 years, as Miceli has.

But it was his bold, insightful, no-punches-pulled letter to the editors of the July 15 edition of the Baltimore Sun that put Miceli on my hero’s list…

“I have taught in the Baltimore public school system for the past two decades. What we need is better students. We have many excellent teachers. I cannot count the number of students who have physically destroyed property in the schools.

“They have trashed brand new computers, destroyed exit signs, set multiple fires, destroyed many, many lockers, stolen teachers’ school supplies, written their filth on the tops of classroom desks, defecated in the bathrooms and stairwells, assaulted teachers (beyond constantly telling them to perform certain impossible acts upon themselves) and refused to do any homework or class work.

You can bet that Baltimore school honchos and some elected officials want Miceli fired so badly they can almost taste it. Oddly enough, what probably saves Miceli from being canned are two things that conservatives — rightly so, in most cases — feel are precisely what’s wrong with American education.

That would be teachers’ unions and tenure. With his two decades of teaching, Miceli has tenure. Members of the Baltimore Teachers Union — and its leaders — probably don’t know whether to love or lynch the guy.

So Miceli probably knew that he wouldn’t be fired for his letter, but he’s courageous for saying what he said in a city that’s majority black, with a school system that’s majority black, and where most of the elected officials are black Democrats.

A majority black city?  A majority black school system?  And a majority of black elected officials?  So it’s safe to say that at least some of these students behaving badly are black.  And if these predominantly black Democrat cities have a high black unemployment rate perhaps the conversation we should be having is why aren’t these students doing their homework?  Why aren’t they doing their class work?  For if they aren’t doing their school work how are they going to possess the skills an employer would expect of a high school graduate?  And if they’re not doing their work in high school how are they going to be able to go on to college.  Which is just a much harder high school?

Perhaps this is the reason for the high black unemployment rates in our big Democrat-controlled cities.  Because the left sacrifices these kids for political reasons.  So they can blame racist white Republicans for preventing these kids from doing their homework and their class work.  For remember rule number 2.  Which states, “When blacks are to blame see Rule #1.”  Which states “Whites are to blame.”  Even when it’s black teachers in a black school district in a black city run by black Democrats.

This is the dialog the left wants to have.  So the right understand these two rules.  So they, too, do nothing, excuse bad behavior and spend more money.

Liberals have a Distinct Advantage when it comes to Embarrassing Nude Selfies in Cyberspace

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 4th, 2013

Week in Review

A lot of people in their teens and twenties may not be thinking about running for public office.  A senate or a presidential campaign may be the last thing on their mind as they are partying on some college campus.  Finally away from their parents.  Able to do the things they couldn’t do with their parents around.  Like get drunk.  And have some grownup fun.  Even taking naughty pictures of themselves and sending them to their fellah.  Never thinking that it would end up a permanent fixture on the Internet.  Besides, how could that ever come back to haunt them (see When Will We Get a Female Pol’s Crotch Shot? by Lizzie Crocker posted 8/1/2013 on The Daily Beast)?

Leave it to Gloria Steinem to raise the million-dollar question out of all the media gold that has been spun out of Anthony Weiner’s latest sexting scandal:

“I mean, just imagine if there were a woman who had photographed her pubic area and sent it out on the phone,” Steinem recently told The Cut. “Would she be a candidate..?”

Let’s face it: any female politician whose vagina was splashed all over the Web would have a hard time weathering the derision that image would inevitably generate.

The sad thing is a woman’s political orientation will determine the derision that would follow.  Not to mention the shame and embarrassment.  The media coverage would portray the Democrat as a victim.  While portraying the Republican as a hypocrite.  Family values?  Yeah, right.  While late night television would have a field day.  “I’m sorry, I didn’t recognize you with your clothes covering your vagina.”

Kids do stupid things in their youth.  In the old days these were things done and forgotten.  Where mothers today may blush as they remember something they did in their youth.  But that’s where it ends.  Because there was no permanent record of it floating in cyberspace.  Unlike today.  Where if these women don’t go on to a career in porn those pictures will come back and haunt them.  Forever.  Perhaps even destroying their political aspirations.  If those aspirations include joining the Republican Party.

It leaves one to wonder about the left’s objectification of women.  Their turning women into sexual objects for men to enjoy.  Perhaps they want these young women to upload embarrassing nude photos of themselves.  So they can store them on some server farm.  Just in case they decide to go into politics.  On the wrong side.  At which time they can dig these pictures up.  And throw them back out onto the Internet.  So they can use them to destroy the political opposition.  For they know that can’t win in the arena of ideas.  No.  The way they win is with vicious personal attacks on the opposition so that they rue the day they ever entered the political area.  And nothing could help them more than some nude selfies from their youth.

And the saddest thing of all is that it is the conservative cause that will suffer the most.  An adulterous affair with an intern young enough to be his daughter in the Oval Office?   What business is that of ours?  What people do in their private lives has nothing to do with their ability to expertly execute the duties of their office.  A crotch shot from a drunken teen on spring break?  Obviously a sign of a deep character flaw.  And clearly someone who has no right to talk about family values.  The exhibitionist hypocrite.

You know this is what will happen.  And why some of America’s best and brightest may never run for public office.  Because of something they did when they were a young silly liberal that’s come back to bite them in the ass when they’ve grown up into a mature responsible conservative adult.  For conservatives will have shame for something so embarrassing in their past.  Unlike some liberals.

Detroit may mark the Beginning of the End of Generational Theft by Public Sector Unions

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 4th, 2013

Week in Review

So who’s to blame for Detroit?  The greedy.  The greed of the public sector.  Who stole as much as they thought possible from future generations.  Laughing all the way to the bank.  But never did they think that their greed would eclipse the paying-ability of those they were stealing from.  Future taxpayers.  Which is what happened in Detroit.  And will probably happen elsewhere throughout the nation (see The Unsteady States of America posted 7/27/2013 on the Economist).

Nearly half of Detroit’s liabilities stem from promises of pensions and health care to its workers when they retire. American states and cities typically offer their employees defined-benefit pensions based on years of service and final salary. These are supposed to be covered by funds set aside for the purpose. By the states’ own estimates, their pension pots are only 73% funded. That is bad enough, but nearly all states apply an optimistic discount rate to their obligations, making the liabilities seem smaller than they are. If a more sober one is applied, the true ratio is a terrifying 48% (see article). And many states are much worse. The hole in Illinois’s pension pot is equivalent to 241% of its annual tax revenues: for Connecticut, the figure is 190%; for Kentucky, 141%; for New Jersey, 137%.

By one recent estimate, the total pension gap for the states is $2.7 trillion, or 17% of GDP. That understates the mess, because it omits both the unfunded pension figure for cities and the health-care promises made to retired government workers of all sorts. In Detroit’s case, the bill for their medical benefits ($5.7 billion) was even larger than its pension hole ($3.5 billion).

Some of this is the unfortunate side-effect of a happy trend: Americans are living longer, even in Detroit, so promises to pensioners are costlier to keep. But the problem is also political. Governors and mayors have long offered fat pensions to public servants, thus buying votes today and sending the bill to future taxpayers. They have also allowed some startling abuses. Some bureaucrats are promoted just before retirement or allowed to rack up lots of overtime, raising their final-salary pension for the rest of their lives. Or their unions win annual cost-of-living adjustments far above inflation. A watchdog in Rhode Island calculated that a retired local fire chief would be pulling in $800,000 a year if he lived to 100, for example. More than 20,000 retired public servants in California receive pensions of over $100,000.

This is an important point.  People say that we must honor these lavish pension and retiree health care benefits because they made a deal.  A contract with the city.  Or the state.  But did they?  No.  The public sector unions and the cities and states colluded together to steal money from future generations.  Who were not a party to those agreements.  This amounts to generational theft.  And the generous size of those benefits just makes that theft worse.  Transforming the public sector into an aristocracy.  That cares little for the future taxpayers that they will be bled dry to pay for their long and comfortable retirements.

Detroit is just the first domino to fall.  This generational theft is just unsustainable.  Something has to be done.  But what?

Public employees should retire later. States should accelerate the shift to defined-contribution pension schemes, where what you get out depends on what you put in. (These are the norm in the private sector.) Benefits already accrued should be honoured, but future accruals should be curtailed, where legally possible. The earlier you grapple with the problem, the easier it will be to fix. Nebraska, which stopped offering final-salary pensions to new hires in 1967, is sitting pretty.

In other words our public servants should not live a better life than their masters.  Those people paying the bill.  There should be no aristocracy in the United States.  People in the public sector shouldn’t be able to retire young and live a long life in retirement while someone else is paying the bill.  The taxpayer.  People who have to work until they drop dead to save for their own retirement.  That just isn’t right.  If our servants in the public sector want that long and comfortable retirement then they must do what people in the private sector do.  Save for it.  Make sacrifices.  And live more frugally.  Because there shouldn’t be two Americas.  Where one enslaves the other.  While setting up a string of municipal and state bankruptcies because of their greed that threatens the financial wellbeing of the nation.

Despite the Left’s Opposition to Fracking even the Environmental British are Joining In

Posted by PITHOCRATES - August 4th, 2013

Week in Review

One of the reasons the government tells us we must ‘invest’ in clean energy is to wean us off of costly foreign oil.  To give us energy independence.  And so we stop sending out money to nations in the world who don’t much care for us.  That’s why we must spend enormous amounts of tax dollars on things like solar and wind power.  Because we need them.  But because they are such poor business models they can’t operate without government subsidies.  So is there another option to give us that energy independence?  That doesn’t require government subsidies?  While even lowering our energy costs?  Yes there is.  And the British are now trying to play catch up to the United States (see The potential prize from fracking is huge by Michael Fallon posted 7/31/2013 on The Telegraph).

North, south, east and west, shale gas represents an exciting new potential resource for Britain that could contribute to our energy security, growth and jobs.

We only have to look across the Atlantic to see how it has reinvigorated the US economy: gas prices have halved, cutting costs for industry and consumers, and creating thousands of jobs and billions in new investment. Countries from India to Australia have looked on in envy at this boom – and are now joining in.

For its part, this Government is serious about shale. We are encouraging industry to find out how much is recoverable in all parts of the country. Given increasingly volatile international gas and oil prices, and our commitment to helping hard-pressed families with their bills, it would be irresponsible to ignore a new energy source right underneath our feet…

…residents understandably want reassurances that their water will not be contaminated. The facts are that around 2.5 million wells have now been fracked worldwide, more than 27,000 of them in the US in 2011. There is no evidence from America of fracking causing any groundwater contamination.

Other than in Hollywood movies.  And on television shows.  There it’s contaminating groundwater like there’s no tomorrow.  But with all that fracking going on in the United States the news is surprisingly barren of contaminated groundwater reports.  And you know they’d be leading all the news programs if there were.  Because the left hates fracking.  And the mainstream media leans left.  Way left.

That energy boom is a private boom.  It’s not because of the government.  It’s in spite of the government.  Who has launched a war on coal and oil.  Shutting down oil production on the Gulf of Mexico.  And on all federal lands.  Or making it very difficult for those who try.

Much of the global warming nonsense came from the University of East Anglia.  Making Britain near ground zero in the battle against global warming.  And here they are.  Wanting to frack to bring energy costs down for households.  Create jobs.  And reduce dependency on foreign oil.  Pity the United States government doesn’t care enough about the American people to do the same.
