The Language Police descend upon a Spoon in a Montreal Yogurt Shop

Posted by PITHOCRATES - June 22nd, 2013

Week in Review

If you think there is hostility between liberals and conservatives in the United States try this.  Go to Ontario, Canada, and greet someone by saying, “Bonjour personne anglophone.  Permettez-moi de parler lentement alors même que vous mon obtus ami peut comprendre ma langue supérieure.  (Which, according to Bing, translates to “Hello English-speaking person.  Let me speak slowly so even you my dim-witted friend may understand my superior language.”)

Do NOT do this.  Because if you do you may really offend someone and cause an international incident.  For the English-speaking Canadians are not exactly thrilled with French-speaking Canadians and their French language agenda.  Who even have language police enforcing a French-only language law in Quebec (see Quebec language cops object to yogurt shop’s spoons by Giuseppe Valiante, QMI Agency, posted 6/21/2013 on the Toronto Sun).

David Lipper said he had no idea his two Menchies Frozen Yogurt franchises in the Montreal area were carrying potential contraband.

Lipper said he “was so paranoid to ensure everything in the store was in French” that he missed a pivotal item: the yogurt spoons.

Lipper said an inspector told him he violated the province’s language laws and the oversight will cost his head office at least $30,000…

The “cow” spoon is engraved with the words “sweet moosic!” The language inspector who visited Lipper’s yogurt shop a few days ago didn’t appreciate the play on words.

So why are the English-speaking Canadians so upset with the French-speaking Canadians?  Because of things like this.  While every other province outside of Quebec has to be bilingual.  All of their businesses, their courts, their stores and even their road signs have to be in both English and French.  Which costs a pretty penny.  Yet in Quebec there is no English allowed.  Despite Canada being officially bilingual.

So don’t go up to an English-speaking Canadian and say something rude to them in French.  For it is almost certain that they will fail to see the humor in it.

For the record the French were first to Canada.  The lower town of Quebec City dates back to 1603.  So they had a lot of history there before the British defeated them in the Seven Years’ War and made French Canada British.  So you can understand their desire to keep the French language, customs and institutions alive in the heart of what was once New France.  But on the other hand they have imposed bilingualism on the rest of Canada.  Where the vast majority of these people trace their history back to the British.  So it is a touchy subject.  And will forever remain one.  Just be polite and respectful to whomever you talk to in Canada and you can’t go wrong.  For they are a kind people.  And will treat you like family.

Kim Jong Un turns to Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf for Advice for North Korea’s Economic Ills

Posted by PITHOCRATES - June 22nd, 2013

Week in Review

President Bill Clinton entered into an agreement to help them build two nuclear reactors to produce electric power if the North Koreans agreed to give up their nuclear weapons program.   But they went ahead and built nuclear weapons anywhere.  President Clinton also gave them some satellite knowledge.  Navigational black boxes.  Allowing them to launch a satellite into space.  Which upon launching crashed in the ocean.   Which the North Koreans salvaged.  And got the navigational black box.  Giving them not only nuclear weapons but the knowledge to create an ICBM to deliver that nuclear weapon.  And ever since they’ve threatened us with nuclear belligerency to get what they want.  They agree to stand down on their nuclear weapon program in exchange for food or energy aid.  And when that aid runs out they threaten us with nuclear belligerency again.

President George W. Bush included North Korea in the Axis of Evil.  And was not as friendly to Kim Jong Il as his predecessor was.  But Kim Jong Il is dead now.  And his son Kim Jong Un has taken over.  So how much better did things get with the new Kim?  Not much.  In fact, they may have gotten worse (see Report: Kim Jong Un handing out copies of ‘Mein Kampf’ to senior North Korean officials by Max Fisher posted 6/17/2013 on The Washington Post).

Senior North Korean officials received copies of “Mein Kampf,” Adolf Hitler’s rambling prison memoir, as gifts for Kim Jong Un’s birthday this January, according to a report by New Focus International, a North Korean news organization that sources from defectors and volunteer citizens within the country…

The book was apparently not distributed to endorse Nazism so much as to draw attention to Germany’s economic and military reconstruction after World War One…

“Kim Jong Un gave a lecture to high-ranking officials, stressing that we must pursue the policy of Byungjin in terms of nuclear and economic development,” New Focus’s North Korean source told them by phone. “Byungjin” translates literally to “in tandem” and refers to official policy of developing the nuclear program and economy simultaneously.

The nuclear program is still front and center in national policy.  Some things never change.

So they’re going to take some economic lessons from Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf?  To recreate the economic miracle Hitler had following World War I?  It’s a little too late for that.  For a lot of the things Hitler did North Korea already has done.  Seize private property.  Limit imports.  Abolish trade unions.  Cut wages.  Force people to work longer hours.  Default on debt.  Print money to pay for public works projects.  And military rearmament.  Then plan on using the proceeds from world conquest to fix their balance sheet.

A lot of these are non-options for Kim Jong Un.  For there is no private property to seize.  They don’t have any trade unions demanding higher wages or better working conditions to abolish.  Public work projects?  If they haven’t been able to light up the night after all of these years with a grand public works project chances are they never will.  They already have a military-first national policy like the Nazis did.  They have one of the largest land armies in the world.  And already have nuclear weapons.  Yet they still have a horrible economy.  Proving again Keynesian economics doesn’t work.  For that was basically what Hitler had.  An economic system somewhere between the Soviet Union and the United States.  State capitalism.  Heavy on the state.

But for state capitalism to work you need a large private sector economy to interfere in.  And North Korea just doesn’t have that.  What they have is nothing but state spending.  And state spending just doesn’t work.  If it did North Korea’s economy would be greater and stronger than South Korea’s economy.  But it’s not.  For South Korea has lit up their night.  And they are doing quite well.  So well that they are one of the four Asian Tigers.  Because they embraced free market capitalism.  And when they do stray into state capitalism theirs is a kind that is very heavy on the capitalism.  Not the state.

With Women in the Military Men have to stop Treating Women as the Sexual Objects they thought they Were

Posted by PITHOCRATES - June 22nd, 2013

Week in Review

In the classic World War II movie Run Silent Run Deep every time they went to battle stations they patted the backside of a pinup girl.  The pinup was one of artist Gil Elvgren’s creations.  You can see it in the movie trailer just after the one minute mark.

Patting the backside of this voluptuous pinup brought the sailors good luck.  And was a constant reminder of their wife or sweetheart waiting for them at home.  Or it just let the sailor dream of the pretty woman they would one day meet at home once the war was over.  If they survived.  And the odds for that weren’t that good.  Especially for those in the submarine service.  Or anyone in combat.  So who could begrudge these boys a little titillation from a sexy pinup girl?  To remind them what they’re fighting for.  The people at home.  Pretty ladies.  And the American way.  But, alas, they can’t do that today.  Because it creates a hostile work environment.  In addition to the hostile work environment created by the enemy trying to kill them (see Navy Will Inspect Its Bathrooms for ‘Degrading’ Images of Women by Elizabeth Harrington posted 6/18/2013 on CNSNews.com).

In line with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s order for troops to have their workplaces searched for “degrading or offensive” materials — part of an attempt to curb sexual assault in the military — the Navy will inspect even its bathrooms…

The “comprehensive visual inspections” of the workspaces conducted by commanding officers will “ensure they are free from materials that create a degrading, hostile, or offensive work environment…”

All branches of the military are under orders to remove inappropriate materials from work spaces, but the Air Force has made an exception for some of the pin-up art of World War II.

According to a December 2012 Dayton Daily News report, paintings of voluptuous women will not be removed from the nose cones of old planes at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

I hate to say this but this wasn’t a problem when there were only men in combat.  Where thoughts were only focused on a sexy pinup.  And their sweetheart at home.  With women on board, though, those thoughts can drift to the woman working with them in close quarters.  Who they can kill time with during unbearable stretches of boredom at sea.  Where there is nothing to do once off duty.  So far from home.  Especially when you haven’t enjoyed the company of a woman in months.

So today the military has to deal with sexual assaults.  As well as the occasional pregnancy during active duty.  For men aren’t the only ones bored while off duty.  Women get bored, too.  And some women get together with some of the men.  And they help each other get over their boredom.  You know they are.  And there’s no point trying to tell them not to.  It’s why we give birth control to our teens.  And give them access to abortion services.  Because no matter what we say they are going to have sex anyway.  Yet a few years or so later we expect them to become puritanical and chaste.  Something we don’t dare demand of people of the same age who aren’t serving in the military.

The military is really not a good place for social experimentation.  Having to deal with sexual assaults and the occasional pregnancy takes resources away from the mission.  It is a distraction.  Trying to segregate men and women while off duty sleeping, showering or going to the bathroom.  That’s space that they have to take away from someplace else.  And on a ship there isn’t a whole lot to begin with.

If they want to cut down on sexual assaults then they should stop sexualizing women at such an early age.  And force-feeding them birth control.  Giving them access to abortion services.  And even letting girls as young as 15 buy the morning-after pill without a doctor’s prescription or parental notification.  Signaling to boys that these girls are there to have sex with.  So they have nothing but sex on the mind.  Even a well-disciplined killer in the military may falter when there is more than a pinup poster in their midst.  But an actual woman of flesh and blood.  That they may want to pat on the backside for good luck when going to battle stations.  Or more.  Because they are flesh and blood men.  Brought up in a highly sexualized world.  Where they’ve learned it’s okay to have sex with women.  Because women have birth control, access to abortion and the morning-after pill.

IRS Supervisor confirms IRS Scandal was not Isolated to Rogue Agents in Cincinnati

Posted by PITHOCRATES - June 22nd, 2013

Week in Review

The IRS abuse of conservatives was not politically motivated.  Because the IRS said so.  Even though the scandal was not isolated to a few rogue agents in Cincinnati.  As we have recently learned (see IRS supervisor in D.C. admits to overseeing ‘tea party’ targeting by David Sherfinski posted 6/17/2013 on The Washington Times).

An IRS supervisor working in Washington told congressional investigators that she personally reviewed applications from groups for tax-exempt status, in testimony that appears to show the agency’s scrutiny of conservative groups extended beyond the confines of the office in Cincinnati.

Holly Paz, who was a supervisor in the Internal Revenue Service’s tax-exempt status division, indicated during an interview with congressional investigators that she did review such applications, but indicated that she believed “tea party” meant political advocacy in general — not necessarily conservative groups.

Ms. Paz said she did not believe any overt political motivation was causing the delays in applications for groups from 2010 through 2012, and that she knew of liberal groups that were heavily scrutinized as well.

Really?  Funny that it appears to be only conservative groups that have come forward reporting this extensive scrutiny.  And that it was only conservatives who were muzzled during the 2012 election.  As they couldn’t collect anonymous donations like those liberal groups could.  As a list of the conservative donors somehow found there way from the IRS to liberal websites.  And the fact that 95% of the policy-makers at the IRS donated to the Obama campaign doesn’t make it political, either.  No.  There’s nothing political going on at the IRS.

So the IRS scandal goes all the way to Washington.  Will the people learn this?  Will the people even care?  Conservatives do.  But those more preoccupied with social media could care less about things not covered in the mainstream media as little more than an afterthought.  But when the networks, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert hammer away at another GOP ill-informed comment about rape?  That enters social media.  So the people know this.  And care.  Which is why they don’t seem to care about abuses against conservatives.  Because based on what they learn from watching the networks, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert they just assume they deserve it.  Because they are so intolerant.  Unlike them.  Who are so tolerant that they don’t mind the intolerance of others attacking those they don’t agree with.

California may run out of Water because of the PDO and Sunspot Activity, not because of Manmade Global Warming

Posted by PITHOCRATES - June 22nd, 2013

Week in Review

It’s not snowing enough in the Rocky Mountains anymore because of global warming.  According to all the relevant climate scientists today.  Whose research appears to contain more politics than scientific analysis.  For they have arrived at conclusions based on a selective set of scientific results while conveniently ignoring contradictory data.  And because they do they can make claims like this (see Why Dwindling Snow—Thanks Largely to Climate Change—Might Dry Out Los Angeles by Bryan Walsh posted 6/17/2013 on Time Science & Space).

While the national government remains slow to deal with climate change, many cities have been moving ahead. Why the difference? Well, cities tend to be more homogenous politically, which makes any kind of decisive action easier to push through. But the real reason is that city managers know they will be the first ones forced to deal with the likely consequences of global warming: rising sea levels and flooding, deadly heat waves and water struggles…

Now a new study from the University of California, Los Angeles, suggests that the local mountain snowfall — vital for water supplies — could fall 30% to 40% below 2000 levels by midcentury, thanks to global warming. And if emissions don’t decline and warming is worse than we expect, more snow will vanish, even as greater L.A. continues to grow.

Included in the article are very scientific-sounding statements from climate scientists ensconced in one of our liberal universities (UCLA) which, of course, would have no liberal bias.

The mountains won’t receive nearly as much snow as they used to, and the snow they do get will not last as long …We won’t reach the 32ºF threshold for snow as often, so a greater percentage of precipitation will fall as rain instead of snow, particularly at lower elevations. Increased flooding is possible from the more frequent rains, and springtime runoff from melting snowpack will happen sooner…

This science is clear and compelling: Los Angeles must begin today to prepare for climate change.

All because of global warming caused by rising levels of greenhouse gasses?  Well, that’s what they say.  Of course, that doesn’t explain the fall in global temperatures over the last decade.  Odd climate behavior for a climate suffering from global warming.  Their models can’t explain this.  But this can (see Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) posted 3/2/2011 on appinsys.com/GlobalWarming).

Evidence is presented that the recent worldwide land warming has occurred largely in response to a worldwide warming of the oceans rather than as a direct response to increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) over land. Atmospheric model simulations of the last half-century with prescribed observed ocean temperature changes, but without prescribed GHG changes, account for most of the land warming. … Several recent studies suggest that the observed SST variability may be misrepresented in the coupled models used in preparing the IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report, with substantial errors on interannual and decadal scales. There is a hint of an underestimation of simulated decadal SST variability even in the published IPCC Report.

They go on to discuss something called the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO).  And the PDO index.  Which they calculate “from sea surface temperatures and sea level pressures.”  What they found was a cyclical warming and cooling every 20-30 years.  This change in ocean temperatures caused a change in the low-level jet stream as it blew across the United States from west to east.  When it moves south it picks up more moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and causes more Midwest storms.  When it moves further south the Midwest suffers droughts.  Like those that created the great dust bowl of the Thirties.  And causes less snowfall in the mountains.

What causes the PDO?  Well, there is a correlation between sunspot activity and the PDO.  So that is a likely cause.  And a probable cause.  So sunspot activity causes warming and cooling of the oceans.  Which causes changes in the low-level jet stream.  Resulting in warming and cooling over land.  And depending where that low-level jet stream moves we may have floods, droughts, storms or mountain snow.  None of which has a thing to do with man-made greenhouse gases.
