The worst of the NHS will be 5-Times worse in the US under Obamacare

Posted by PITHOCRATES - February 9th, 2013

Week in Review

Obamacare is the first step towards national health care.  They designed Obamacare to raise costs to get employers to drop their health care and pay a cheaper fine instead.  As more do private health insurance companies will struggle to stay in business with fewer and fewer clients.  The fewer they have the more each will have to pay.  So those who try to keep providing health insurance will have to give up and pay the fine instead.  In time the private health insurance industry will collapse.  Leaving the government as the only remaining option for health insurance.  A backdoor way to national health care.

So that’s where we’re heading.  So what will it be like when we get there?  Something like this (see NHS staff must reveal poor care by law, says inquiry by Robert Winnett posted 2/5/2013 on The Telegraph).

Medical staff should have a “statutory duty of candour” to disclose any concerns they have following the “shocking” situation that led to the deaths of up to 1,200 patients in two hospitals run by Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust between 2005 and 2009, the report concludes.

Robert Francis QC will publish his report into the failings following a two-and-a-half-year public inquiry which will conclude that “routine neglect” became the norm because of a culture of “fear, bullying and secrecy”.

He is expected to conclude that there were multiple failings within the NHS, with doctors and nurses failing to report concerns, managers failing to monitor standards, local bureaucrats failing to intervene and regulators failing to run inspections properly…

A Labour source said: “Labour’s four-hour target revolutionised emergency care in Britain, with 98 per cent of patients seen within four hours.

“In the same way, the 18-week target stopped the scandal of patients waiting two years for operations.”

Routine neglect?  Fear?  Bullying?  Secrecy?  Don’t know which is worse.  This.  Or 4-hour wait times in emergency rooms and 2-year wait times for operations.

Anyway, this is what we have to look forward to under Obamacare.  When it ushers in true national health care.  A horrible time for those entering the health care system.  And it will be worse in the United States.  Because the United States had 5-times the population of the UK.  So they will have 5-times the bureaucracy.  And 5-times he horrible times.

Foolish Majors and Bad Economic Policies lead to High Unemployment among Recent College Graduates

Posted by PITHOCRATES - February 9th, 2013

Week in Review

Going to college is very expensive.  In fact, tuition costs seem to rise as much as health care cost yet no one blames the colleges and universities for being profit whores.  Odd.  No one ever complains about the high cost of education.  Unless they’re attacking Republicans for not approving more spending to help subsidize what these profit whores at our colleges and universities are charging our students.  Worse, these profit whores are selling a lot of worthless degrees to these unsuspecting students (see Four Foolish Majors To Avoid by Terence Loose posted 2/7/2013 on Yahoo! Education).

Opportunity Killer #1: Liberal Arts

Unemployment Rate for Recent College Graduates: 9.2 percent*

“I don’t think the majority of [liberal arts grads] are going to be employable because they don’t come out of those degrees with any marketable skills,” says Heathfield. “But even worse than that, they spend the money to go four years to college and then get a job that pays $30,000 a year with no upward prospects.”

Opportunity Killer #2: Philosophy and Religious Studies

Unemployment Rate for Recent College Graduates: 10.8 percent*

Can you remember the last time you saw a “Wanted” ad that said: “Looking for a really smart person who can solve why I exist”? Neither can we – and we’re guessing even Plato could recognize the need for practical skills. It seems like today’s employers certainly do, too.

Opportunity Killer #3: Information Systems

Unemployment Rate for Recent College Graduates: 11.7 percent*

Quick, what exactly do information systems majors study? Not sure? Neither are most employers, says Heathfield. That’s not to say this degree doesn’t build good skills; it’s just that if you’re interested in computer technology, it’s best to earn a degree that is easily understood, like a bachelor’s in computer science or computer engineering, says Heathfield.

Opportunity Killer #4: Architecture

Unemployment Rate for Recent College Graduates: 13.9 percent*

There are few things as inspirational as a beautiful building or home. That said, thanks to the massive hit the housing and commercial real estate industries took in the past decade, this degree may not lead to a good job outlook.

Apart from architecture what do these degrees have in common?  They don’t have a lot of math or science in them.  That is, they’re easier than, say, degrees in electrical engineering or theoretical physics.  Could this play a part in why students choose these degrees?  These kids who are going away from home for the first time.  To a raucous college campus.  Where there is booze, drugs and sex.  You know, they even rate colleges by their party index.  So, yes, kids choose easy degrees so they can go to college and party.  Where they can enjoy booze, drugs and sex away from the disapproving glare of their parents.  Even earn a starring role in a Girls Gone Wild video when they take the partying up a notch on spring break.

So when students protest in an Occupy Wall Street movement because they can’t get a job this is why.  A lot of them have degrees in these foolish majors.  Which on top of President Obama’s economic policies is not a recipe for gainful employment.  But these kids will have those great college memories.  Which they will be reminded of.  Every time they can’t make a payment on that colossal student loan debt that those good times cost them.

President Obama’s Drone Strikes in Pakistan kill 891 Civilians including 176 Children

Posted by PITHOCRATES - February 9th, 2013

Week in Review

The Left hated few presidents as much as they hated George W. Bush.  They called him a war criminal.  Even calling for his arrest so he can stand trial for his war crimes.  Applauding when nations issue arrest warrants should he step foot inside their countries.  His actions only stirred up anti-American sentiment.  And provided a recruiting tool for terrorists.  President Obama was going to change all of that.  He was going to make the world love us again.  All while making the world a safer place (see Pakistani Ambassador: U.S. Drone Strikes Cross a ‘Red Line’ by Paul D. Shinkman posted 2/5/2013 on U.S. News & World Report).

The U.S. has conducted 362 strikes in Pakistan since 2004, 310 of which have occurred during the Obama administration, according to data from The Bureau of Investigative Journalism. As many as 3,461 people have been killed by the attacks, including as many as 891 civilian deaths, 176 of which were children.

Every U.S. drone strike garners national attention in Pakistan through dozens of television outlets, says Rehman. Pakistanis view the attacks as a “negative and unfortunate” use of power that makes it difficult for the Pakistani government to build a public consensus in its relations with the U.S.

“Operationally, it is counterproductive because it creates more potential terrorists on the ground instead of taking them out,” she says, adding public perception in Pakistan turns the attacks into a recruiting tool for terrorist organizations. “We need to drain the swamp.”

If you do the math that means George W. Bush sent in only 52 drone strikes into Pakistan.  In other words President Obama sent in 86% of all drone strikes into Pakistan.  Our ally.  And yet George W. Bush is the war criminal.  Not President Obama.

If you crunch the other numbers these drone strikes killed 2,570 terrorists.  Along with 715 civilian adults.  And 176 children.  Making the number of terrorists killed only 74% of the total killed.  With civilian adults totaling 21% of the total killed.  And children totaling 5% of the total killed.  Don’t know how many civilians George W. Bush killed but with 86% of all drone strikes into Pakistan President Obama must have killed the lion’s share of civilians.  Yet George W. Bush is the war criminal.  Not President Obama.  If George W. Bush was still in office the Left would be burning effigies of him for his wonton killing of innocent civilians.  But with President Obama we get a shrug of the shoulders.  And a simple c’est la guerre.

The lesson here?  If you want to use awesome military weapons to kill people around the world make sure you have a ‘D’ next to your name.  For if you’re a Democrat you get a pass.  While if you’re a Republican they brand you a war criminal.

The UFCW wants to unionize Workers at Medical Marijuana Pot Shops

Posted by PITHOCRATES - February 9th, 2013

Week in Review

The unions have always advertised that union made was better made.  Because it was safer.  And of higher quality.  For unions look out for the people.  They protect our kids in school.  And demand high safety standards in industry.  They even have a zero tolerance policy on drug use in the workplace.  Large union contracts on big construction projects have mandatory drug testing to hire in.  And have random-random drug tests monthly.  Once a month on some random day at some random time they call workers in to pee in a cup for testing.  That’s how committed the unions are in combating drug use.  So you never would have expected to see something like this (see Insight: Shrinking U.S. labor unions see relief in marijuana industry by Samuel P. Jacobs and Alex Dobuzinskis posted 2/6/2013 on Reuters).

During the last few years, unions, led by the UFCW [United Food and Commercial Workers union], have played an increasingly significant role in campaigns to allow medical marijuana, now legal in California, 17 other states and Washington, D.C…

Union officials acknowledge that their support stems partly from the idea that the marijuana industry could create hundreds of thousands of members at a time when overall union membership is shrinking…

Industry advocates acknowledge that the legal marijuana industry’s potential to produce jobs is difficult to project. One reason: uncertainty over how the U.S. government will deal with an industry whose product is illegal under federal law but increasingly accepted by state laws.

Since Colorado and Washington state voted to legalize marijuana on November 6, President Barack Obama has said his administration will not pursue recreational pot users in those states.

This is interesting.  If the states don’t like a federal law they just ignore it.  If Colorado and Washington can simply ignore a federal law they don’t like then every state that doesn’t like Obamacare should be able to ignore it, too.  If the unions protest states that ignore Obamacare (the unions endorsed Obamacare) and insist that they follow federal law then so should Colorado and Washington.  Who should immediately re-criminalize marijuana under state law.  To match federal law.

By joining a union, marijuana workers could have more sway in pressing for higher pay and benefits such as healthcare…

The retailers there say they are conflicted – grateful for the legitimacy that labor’s involvement could bring their businesses, but worried that the support could undermine the already shaky financial footing of their small operations.

One marijuana business owner in Denver said he considered aligning with the UFCW but eventually backed away. He said he was worried that having a union shop would hurt the value of his business by driving up employment costs…

Eventually, [UFCW’s Rush] helped to persuade enough labor leaders that the same union that organized Hostess bakery workers could represent people who made pot brownies.

High union labor costs just bankrupted Hostess and put them out of business.  So, yeah, marijuana retailers are worried about higher labor costs if their shops unionize.  There’s a reason why there is so little union membership today.  It is very difficult for a business to stay in business with those high union costs.  The very costs that bankrupted General Motors and Chrysler requiring the government bailout.  If they unionize their costs will go up.  As will their prices.  Giving the non-unionized shops a price advantage.  As well as the drug dealer on the street.

In Los Angeles, UFCW Local 770 is pushing a ballot measure that would set zoning and safety standards for medical pot dispensaries. For years, police and residents have complained about the impact that less-than-reputable medical marijuana dispensaries have on some neighborhoods.

Dispensary workers and owners who have aligned themselves with the union say that some competitors undermine prices and security by flouting labor laws and avoiding taxes.

Decriminalizing marijuana is not the panacea they think it is.  First of all no one wants what drugs attract.  Addicts.  And crime.  Shutting down the nonunion shops won’t take care of that problem.  Because the higher prices at the ‘reputable’ drug retailers will only broaden the market for the drug dealers on the street.  Who are also nonunion.  And can sell their marijuana for less than a pot shop with high union labor costs.

Medical marijuana retailers have provided more than medical marijuana.  People wanting marijuana for recreational use had no problem getting a doctor’s prescription.  Including people who bought marijuana and resold it to kids.  Higher retailer prices at ‘reputable’ pot shops are not going to change that.  It will only raise the street value of marijuana.  Making for a prosperous black market.

The UFCW is obviously backing and lobbying for full decriminalization.  So their members can prosper from a rise in drug use.  And addiction.  It is interesting how the Left attacks cigarette smoking.  Even suing Big Tobacco for the harm their addictive product has done to those who smoke.  Yet as evil as cigarette smoking is there is no such outrage over marijuana smoking.  Which they say is not only harmless but medicinal.  Talk about your double standards.

North Korea uploads YouTube Video showing Missiles Raining Down on New York despite President Obama not being George W. Bush

Posted by PITHOCRATES - February 9th, 2013

Week in Review

George W. Bush included North Korea in his Axis of Evil.  Because they were a Stalinist regime with nuclear ambitions.  Who oppressed her people.  Even starving them to death in the occasional famine.  But that was the cowboy days of George W. Bush.  Who made the world hate us with his swaggering and bullying ways.  President Obama was going to make the world love us once again.  Especially our enemies.  By simply talking to them.  So here we are.  Just finishing our fourth year under President Obama.  Who changed the way our enemies think about us (see North Korea ‘dream’ video shows U.S. city under missile attack by Dylan Stableford posted 2/5/2013 on Yahoo! News).

In what appears to be a provocative PR stunt, a bizarre video uploaded to YouTube by North Korea over the weekend shows a dream sequence that includes a U.S. city resembling New York under an apparent missile attack.

The video, produced by North Korea’s official website, Uriminzokkiri, begins with a young man imagining himself aboard a North Korean space shuttle that circles the earth, pausing to zoom in on a unified Korea…

Near the end of the dream sequence, the imagined U.S. city—including what appears to be the Empire State Building—is shown in flames. (The attack footage appears to have been taken from the video game “Modern Warfare 3.”)

“Somewhere in the United States, black clouds of smoke are billowing,” reads a caption, translated by The Guardian. “It seems that the nest of wickedness is ablaze…”

The video arrives just days after North Korea threatened to retaliate against the U.S. for what it called a double standard stemming from a recent rocket launch by South Korea, which the U.S. said had no military intent…

On Saturday, a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman did not elaborate on the threatened retaliation. But according to the Associated Press, Pyongyang recently threatened to conduct its third nuclear test in response to what it calls U.S. hostility.

Did North Korea not get the memo about President Obama becoming president in 2008?  And getting reelected in 2012?  They’re supposed to love us now.  Not threaten us with nuclear tests.  And missiles attacks.  I’m just not feeling the love here.

Perhaps George W. Bush was correct in his foreign policy after all.  And governed like he was wearing big-boy pants.  Like an adult who understands the world.  Not as a child-like liberal with the idealism of a Sixties’ hippy.  For it turns out ‘make love not war’ is not an effective foreign policy.  For there are states out there that just hate us.  And want to rain nuclear missiles down on our cities.  Unless we tremble at their military prowess.  And give them food aid so their people won’t die from yet another famine.

One thing, though, most people probably like in that video was a unified Korea.  Though not in quite the way the North Korean rulers imagine a unified Korea.  One in which the people of South Korea are brought down to the level of those in the North.  But one in which the people in North Korea are brought up to the level of those in the South.  A unified Korea free of oppression.  And free of famine.  This is the dream we have of a unified Korea.
