Near Record Temperatures in Australia Suggest the Earth is not Warming

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 13th, 2013

Week in Review

Al Gore warned us in the Nineties that the earth was warming.  And that if we didn’t take drastic action now within a few years our coastlines would disappear and our lush farmlands would turn into deserts.  He’s still saying that today.  Some 20 years later.  Even though our coastlines haven’t disappeared.  And our farmlands haven’t turned into deserts.  In fact, Al Gore bought a beachside mansion in California despite his warnings.  As well as drastic actions having never been taken.  But every time it gets hot they start up with the same ‘if we don’t take drastic action now’ nonsense.  Even if temperatures don’t reach record highs.  Like they are almost doing in Australia (see Australia’s highest temperature in 15 years – Brisbane Times posted 1/13/2013 on the Brisbane Hub).

Moomba in the far northeast of South Australia yesterday recorded a maximum temperature of 49.6 degrees, which makes it the highest temperature recorded in Australia in 15 years…

Moomba’s 49.6 degrees peak yesterday was also the highest temperature recorded in SA since Oodnadatta reached 50.3 degrees in January 1960…

Yesterday a wide area surrounding Moomba was also very hot, reaching the high 40s. In far western Queensland Birdsville got to 48.6 degrees, its hottest day in 22 years. This is also Queensland’s highest temperature in 22 years, since it reached 48.8 at Birdsville in December 1990.

Global warming alarmists would point to these temperatures and say it’s proof of global warming.  But a rational person would disagree.  For there have been hotter temperatures going back as far as 1960.  Thirty years before Al Gore started warning us that if we don’t take drastic action now our coastlines would disappear and our lush farmlands would turn into deserts.  That was even before climate scientists were warning us about global cooling and the coming ice age.  Before global cooling became so yesterday’s news.  Now global warming is where it’s at.  Until something better comes along for the alarmists.  Again.

The French protest against Gay Marriage and Gay Adoption

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 13th, 2013

Week in Review

Progressives in America lament the provincial ways of the American Right.  Who they feel are so out of touch.  Stuck in the past.  They wish they were more like the open-minded Europeans.  Who have much more liberal attitudes toward sex.  Drugs.  And gay marriage and gay adoption (see Thousands protest against French president Francois Hollande’s plan to legalise gay marriage by Reuters posted 1/13/2013 on The Times of India).

Several hundred thousand people massed at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Sunday to protest against President Francois Hollande’s plan to legalise gay marriage and adoption by June.

Three columns of protesters, waving pink and blue flags showing a father, mother and two children, converged on the landmark from different meeting points in Paris. Many came after long train and bus rides from the provinces…

Strongly backed by the Catholic Church hierarchy, Barjot and groups working with her mobilised church-going families and political conservatives as well as some Muslims, evangelicals and even homosexuals opposed to gay marriage to protest…

“The French are tolerant, but they are deeply attached to the family and the defence of children,” said Daniel Liechti, vice-president of the National Council of French Evangelicals, which urged its members to join the march.

Opponents of gay marriage and adoption, including most faith leaders in France, have argued that the reform would create psychological and social problems for children, which they believe should trump the desire for equal rights for gay adults…

Support for gay marriage in France has slipped by about 10 percentage points to under 55 percent since opponents began speaking out, according to surveys, and fewer than half of those polled recently wanted gays to win adoption rights.

Under this pressure, legislators dropped a plan to also allow lesbians access to artificial insemination.

Organisers insist they are not against gays and lesbians but for the rights of children to have a father and mother.

The audience of the Daily Show will not like this.  They were fine with the French not supporting George W. Bush in some of his war on terror stuff.  Even mocked those who called French fries freedom fries.  But protesting against gay marriage and gay adoption?  That’s just beyond the pale.  Once Jon Stewart makes fun of the French for this his audience will soon be ordering freedom fries instead of French fries.

In all the talk about gay marriage and gay adoption what you hear most about is what’s best for those who want to get married or adopt a child.  Not what’s best for the children.  Which is about the only time the Left is not doing something that is best for the children.  Whether it’s changing the lunch menu at our public schools to banning 2nd and 3rd hand smoke anywhere within a hundred yards of our children to the clamor for gun control.  Everything is always for the children.  Except gay marriage and gay adoption.  That’s for gay adults who want what heterosexual couples have.  Wedded bliss.  And a family.

Whereas in France there are a lot of people who worry about what it may do to the children.  Who are concerned for the children.  Who are fragile and influenced by their environment.  Which is why the Left is constantly trying to protect them.  From cigarette ads.  To violence in movies.  But for some reason they have no concerns of the affects of being raised by gay parents will have on a child.  Who is confused enough with the birds and bees as it is.

The Price for China’s Booming Export Market is some of the worst Air Pollution

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 13th, 2013

Week in Review

The Chinese economy has boomed in the last decade or so.  Liberals in America think it’s because of the Chinese Communists managing the economy.  For they believe brilliant government bureaucrats are smarter in things economic than free market capitalists.  But there’s more to the Chinese economy than those government bureaucrats.  Such as low-paid labor.  And no environmental laws (see Air pollution in Beijing goes off the index by LOUISE WATT, Associated Press, posted 1/13/2012 on Yahoo! News).

People refused to venture outdoors and buildings disappeared into Beijing’s murky skyline on Sunday as the air quality in China’s notoriously polluted capital went off the index…

Air pollution is a major problem in China due to the country’s rapid pace of industrialization, reliance on coal power, explosive growth in car ownership and disregard to environmental laws. It typically gets worse in the winter because of heating needs.

This is how you get a booming economy.  You exploit workers.  And pollute the air.  This is the Chinese secret.

The Chinese can export goods at prices below our costs.  Because they pay next to nothing for labor.  And give them no benefits.  They also don’t burden businesses with costly regulations.  Like environmental regulations.  The Left’s relationship with Big Labor keeps labor costs high.  And excessive regulatory costs make the cost of business high.  China has neither.  Which is why they have a booming export economy.  And why the Americans cannot compete with them.

The Democrats issue new Lending Regulations to address the Financial Crisis they Created

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 13th, 2013

Week in Review

The subprime mortgage crisis is still a political football.  The Democrats are using the crisis to further regulate the financial markets.  Giving us the convoluted Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.  Financial reform.  For apparently there was no financial oversight of the financial markets up until now.  Despite Barney Frank being the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee (2007-2011).  And Chris Dodd being the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs (2007-2011).  Both of who were responsible for the oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  The GSEs at the center of the subprime mortgage crisis (see Mortgage lender rules released by Daniel Wagner, Associated Press, posted 1/10/2013 on The Washington Times).

In the wake of the national housing collapse that helped bring on the Great Recession, federal regulators for the first time are laying out rules aimed at ensuring that borrowers can afford to pay their mortgages.

The long-anticipated rules being unveiled Thursday by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau impose a range of obligations and restrictions on lenders, including bans on the risky “interest-only” and “no documentation” loans that helped inflate the housing bubble…

CFPB Director Richard Cordray, in remarks prepared for an event Thursday, called the rules “the true essence of responsible lending…”

Mr. Cordray noted that in the years leading up to the 2008 financial crisis, consumers could easily obtain mortgages that they could not afford to repay.

So, prior to the Great Recession and the 2008 financial crisis we did not have responsible lending.  Which resulted in consumers obtaining mortgages they could not afford to repay.  Why?  Why were people getting mortgages they had no chance of repaying?  Who was responsible for that?  Well, as it turns out it was President Clinton.  Whose administration overhauled the Community Reinvestment Act (see New Study Finds CRA ‘Clearly’ Did Lead To Risky Lending by Paul Sperry posted 12/20/2012 on

Democrats and the media insist the Community Reinvestment Act, the anti-redlining law beefed up by President Clinton, had nothing to do with the subprime mortgage crisis and recession.

But a new study by the respected National Bureau of Economic Research finds, “Yes, it did. We find that adherence to that act led to riskier lending by banks.”

Added NBER: “There is a clear pattern of increased defaults for loans made by these banks in quarters around the (CRA) exam. Moreover, the effects are larger for loans made within CRA tracts,” or predominantly low-income and minority areas.

To satisfy CRA examiners, “flexible” lending by large banks rose an average 5% and those loans defaulted about 15% more often, the 43-page study found…

The strongest link between CRA lending and defaults took place in the runup to the crisis — 2004 to 2006 — when banks rapidly sold CRA mortgages for securitization by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and Wall Street.

CRA regulations are at the core of Fannie’s and Freddie’s so-called affordable housing mission. In the early 1990s, a Democrat Congress gave HUD the authority to set and enforce (through fines) CRA-grade loan quotas at Fannie and Freddie.

It passed a law requiring the government-backed agencies to “assist insured depository institutions to meet their obligations under the (CRA).” The goal was to help banks meet lending quotas by buying their CRA loans.

But they had to loosen underwriting standards to do it. And that’s what they did…

From 2001-2007, Fannie and Freddie bought roughly half of all CRA home loans, most carrying subprime features…

Housing analysts say the CRA is the central thread running through the subprime scandal — from banks and subprime lenders to Fannie and Freddie to even Wall Street firms that took most of the heat for the crisis…

While the 1977 law was passed 30 years before the crisis, it underwent a major overhaul just 10 years earlier. Starting in 1995, banks were measured on their use of innovative and flexible” lending standards, which included reduced down payments and credit requirements.

Banks that didn’t meet Clinton’s tough new numerical lending targets were denied merger plans, among other penalties. CRA shakedown groups like Acorn held hostage the merger plans of banks like Citibank and Washington Mutual until they pledged more loans to credit-poor minorities (see chart).

A Democrat Congress gave HUD the authority to set and enforce (through fines) CRA-grade loan quotas at Fannie and Freddie?  And Democrats say that Community Reinvestment Act had nothing to do with the 2008 financial crisis?  Funny.  Based on the historical record the Democrat Congress that forced lenders to loosen underwriting standards to meet those quotas are solely responsible for setting into motion the events that led to the 2008 financial crisis.  Not Wall Street.  Not the banks.  It was the Democrat Congress that empowered HUD to destroy good lending practices.  And they bear the responsibility for the 2008 financial crisis.  And the Great Recession.

A 15-Year-Old Boy saves his 12-Year-Old Sister with an AR-15 Assault Rifle

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 13th, 2013

Week in Review

How do you even the odds when an adult and a juvenile accomplice break into a home where a 15-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister are home alone?  You give those kids some firepower (see Investigators: 15-year-old son of deputy shoots burglary suspect by Shern-Min Chow posted 6/29/2010).

The teenage son of a Harris County Precinct 1 deputy shot a home intruder Tuesday afternoon in the 2600 block of Royal Place in northwest Harris County, deputies said.

The 15-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister had been home alone in the Mount Royal Village subdivision when around 2:30 p.m. a pair of burglars tried the front and back doors, then broke a back window.

The teenager grabbed his father’s assault rifle and knew what to do with it…

The home invaders fled, leaving a trail of blood.

Shortly afterwards, two suspects showed up at Tomball hospital. One was an adult and was hit at least three times.  Lifeflight flew him to Memorial Hermann hospital in the Medical Center. The second suspect, a juvenile, was taken back to the crime scene, authorities said.

This is an impressive story of bravery and selfless action to protect his sister.  You’d think this would be big news in the national press.  For people love reading stories like this.  Stories about heroes.  A brother protecting his sister.  If the brother had wrestled his sister out of an undertow amidst a circling pack of sharks it would have made the national news.  But because he used a gun to save her life they ignore this story of bravery.  For this happened in 2010.  And if you do an Internet search today you will find that the only people who reported this story were the local news.  And pro-gun outlets.  Bringing it and other past stories where guns protected those most vulnerable around us (like a 12-year old sister) back into the news.

The mainstream media is only reporting stories where gun violence results in the loss of innocent lives.  When a gun protects innocent lives it’s just not news for them.  Because they are trying to advance an agenda.  With their liberal friends in government.  They want gun control.  And will only report stories that will help them advance that agenda.  While ignoring stories that show anything positive resulting from gun ownership.
