A Dirty Harry-type with a .44 Magnum could have Prevented a lot of Mass Murders

Week in Review

Have you ever watched one of the many Friday the 13th movies?  What is a common scene in any of those movies?  Some person breaking down in tears just before Jason commits another plodding act of murder.  I say plodding because Jason typically kills one person than slowly moves on to another person.  People run away, scream, and cry but they never kill that plodding murderer.  If one person had a ‘Dirty Harry’ .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun ever made, that can blow a hole through a brick wall, they could have done a lot of damage to Jason and ended the movie franchise early.  Yes, he keeps coming back from the dead.  But a .44 magnum can “blow a man’s head clean off.”  And without a head to hear or see anything that would have been the end of that slow-moving, machete-wielding murderer.  Just one shot from a .44 magnum would have made the difference.  Especially considering that Jason didn’t use a gun to do his killing.  So shooting him would have been very, very easy.

These are just movies.  And we’re not supposed to use our common sense.  But there is a lesson to learn from these movies.  If people don’t fight back they often become victims.  Like in this real life incident (see Penn and Teller – Suzanna’s Gun Encounter Story uploaded to YouTube on 4/18/2007).

On Saturday, October 16, 1991, Suzanna Hupp and her parents were having lunch at the Luby’s in Killeen. She had left her handgun in her car to comply with Texas state law at the time which forbade carrying a concealed weapon. When George Hennard drove his truck into the cafeteria and opened fire on the patrons, Hupp instinctively reached into her purse for her weapon, but it was in her vehicle. Her father, Al, tried to rush Hennard and was shot in the chest. As the gunman reloaded, Hupp escaped through a broken window and believed that her mother, Ursula, was behind her. Instead she watched as Hennard killed her parents and twenty-one other persons. He also wounded some twenty others. As a survivor of the Luby’s massacre, Hupp testified across the country in support of concealed-handgun laws. She said that had there been a second chance to prevent the slaughter, she would have violated the Texas law and carried the handgun inside her purse into the restaurant.

In the video she says that the murderer calmly walked from person to person, took aim and executed people at point-blank range.  Killing 22 people.  22 helpless people.  As mass murderers prefer hurting people that can’t hurt them.  Had she taken her weapon into that cafeteria chances are fewer than 22 people would have died.  By either killing the murderer.  Causing the murderer to commit suicide the moment he saw someone that could hurt him (as is often the case in these mass shootings).  Or by making the murderer cower in fear in a puddle of his own urine until the police arrived.  But because no one could shoot back he just kept shooting.

Anti-gun people will say had she pulled a gun out and start shooting she would have just shot innocent bystanders.  Increasing the death toll.  For these anti-gun zealots would prefer people to just die like in a Friday the 13th movie.  Let them run, scream and cry.  But don’t let them fight back.  For if they do they may get other people killed besides themselves.  Maybe as many as 22 helpless people.

The EU is begging Britain to Stay in the EU so they can get their £30 Billion over the Next 5 Years

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 12th, 2013

Week in Review

People used to hate Great Britain.  And their imperialist British Empire.  Despite that very same British Empire giving us great countries like Australia, Canada and the United States.  And other great British Empire spinoffs that are some of the best places to live today.  All they see is a country that exploited others for their own interests.  But some of that hate appears to be turning into love.  For as Britain is preparing to hold a referendum on whether to remain in the EU some of these very same people are begging Britain not to leave the EU.  Leaving the EU, they say, could hurt Britain.  And being so concerned for the well being of Great Britain they beg that Britain remains in the EU.  For Britain’s sake.  How selfless and loving these people are (see German MPs warn UK EU exit would be ‘economic disaster’ by Bridget Kendall posted 1/10/2013 on BBC News UK Politics).

A new, strongly worded warning against Britain leaving the EU has come from a delegation of visiting German MPs…

Briefing reporters at the German Embassy in London, Gunther Krichbaum, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling CDU party, said: “Losing the single market for the UK would be an economic disaster.”

He added that more business leaders in Britain needed to make the case for continued membership.

Mr Krichbaum also argued that Britain would suffer a significant loss of global prestige if it left the EU club.

“Britain leaving [the EU] would weaken the European idea, but it would weaken Britain’s position in the world more,” he said…

Mr Krichbaum added that from his point of view, any attempt by Britain to renegotiate its position to reach a “new settlement” for continued membership would be resisted by its European partners.

Negotiate a new settlement?  Sounds like there is money involved.  Could this be the real reason why they don’t want Britain to leave?  Perhaps (see Banks fear ‘risk to City’ of EU exit by Kamal Ahmed posted 12/29/2012 on The Telegraph).

“The best way to strengthen our economy would be for Britain to leave the EU,” UKIP’s economics spokesman, Tim Congdon, said at the time of the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement.

“We would quickly save the money now being sent by the Government to the EU, which will total almost £30bn over the next five years.

“That figure of £30bn is bad enough. But it does not include the far more serious damage done by the loathsome acquis communautaire [the body of EU legislation which candidate countries must first adopt], with its hundreds of rules and regulations that cause larger businesses to invest outside Europe altogether, bankrupt small businesses and destroy jobs.”

£30bn?  That comes to about $48.4 billion US.  That’s a lot of money.  To put that in perspective in Britain the NHS spent about £106 billion in 2012.  And is trying to save £20 billion over 4 years ending in 2014.  So do you think Britain could use an additional £30 billion over the next 5 years?  Yes.  I believe they could.  It would help Britain take care of Britons.  Instead of sending that money to Brussels.  To help Europeans.  And in doing so they could also make their businesses more competitive by getting rid of hundreds of rules and regulations.  Which is another reason they don’t want Britain to leave the EU.  For if they do not only will the EU lose £30 billion over the next five years they will become less competitive than Britain.  Making a bad situation worse.

It would appear they love Britain when Britain can’t be Britain.  They want Britain’s money.  And they want to keep Britain as uncompetitive as they are.  That’s when they love Britain.  Not when they want to do what is best for the British taxpayer.

Aging Populations have Cooled Economies in Japan and South Korea and may do the same in China

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 12th, 2013

Week in Review

The dependency ratio is a measure of the burden of the unproductive population on the productive population.  We calculate it by dividing the number of people not of working age (typical those under 15 and over 64 years of age) by the number of people of working age (typically those between the ages of 15 and 64).  The higher this percentage the fewer people in the workforce paying taxes to pay for state-provided pensions and health care.  Two things can increase this percentage.  A baby boom.  Which isn’t a problem.  Or an aging population as the younger generation is having fewer babies that those leaving the workforce had.  This is a BIG problem.  As you have fewer and fewer people paying taxes to support more and more people in retirement.

This is why Social Security and Medicare are going bankrupt.  It’s not because the rich aren’t paying their fair share of taxes.  It’s because there just aren’t enough people working anymore to collect enough tax revenue to pay for the exploding pension and health care costs of an aging population.  This is why the Eurozone is suffering a sovereign debt crisis.  It’s why the UK is trying to find billions of savings in their National Health Service.  It’s why France wants to tax millionaires at 75%.  They have shrinking tax bases because their populations are aging.  So they raise tax rates on the fewer people working.

As governments use their monetary policy tools to help them spend money they don’t have their economies suffer.  In fact, there is a direct correlation between a rising dependency ratio and falling GDP.  As Japan’s and South Korea’s populations aged their GDPs fell.  Which should be sounding a lot of warning bells in China.  For their dependency ratio is now rising (see China Hits A Demographic Turning Point by Joe Weisenthal posted 1/11/2013 on Business Insider).

So the great economic miracle that was China may be coming to an end.  Unless they find some other way to address the costs of an aging population.  Something the other, older economic powerhouses have yet to figure out.

Health Sciences North decreases Hospital ER Wait Times in Sudbury that were as High as 19 Hours

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 12th, 2013

Week in Review

The American Left loves the Canadian health care system.  That’s what they wanted when they settled for Obamacare.  They wanted a single-payer system.  Like in Canada.  So they could enjoy real health care nirvana (see ‘Kick in the ass’ helps ER wait times, administrator says posted 1/9/2013 on CBC News).

The hospital in Sudbury says emergency room waits are down thanks to a recent review of its services.

For the past two months, Health Sciences North hasn’t seen the bed shortages that have clogged up the hospital in recent years.

Chief Operating Officer Joe Pilon credited a recent peer review ordered last year by the province, which he said finally prompted hospital staff to put into practice its strategies for dealing with elderly patients.

Sudbury is in northern Ontario, just north of Georgian Bay/Lake Huron on the Trans Canada Highway and the Canadian Pacific Railroad.  An old mining boom town that turned into the largest city in northern Ontario with a population of about 160,000.

Clogged up hospital emergency rooms in recent years?  Years?  And the solution to speeding things up in the ER was dealing with elderly patients?  One wonders how they sped things up by dealing with those elderly patients.  We know how the UK is dealing with their elderly.  With the Liverpool Care Pathway.  Or what some are calling a death panel.  A dignified war for the elderly to die.  Quickly.  And efficiently.  While freeing up some hospital beds in the process.

The article doesn’t elaborate on what steps they took to address the elderly problem.  But a comment left by a reader gives you an idea about how bad those wait times were.

Just last summer, my wife and I left Sudbury ER to go to Espanola ER after waiting in pain for 8 or more hours. We watched as patients with apparently less serious issues go through triage and then trreatment [sic]while more apparently serious cases waited. Was this tactic a clever move just to empty some seats?

I love Sudbury. But it can be a nightmare if you need medical attention at this hospital.

Still, 8 hours isn’t that bad.  A previous CBC news article in May of 2012 noted the average wait time exceeded 19 hours.  The reason behind those long wait times?  Too many people using the emergency room who shouldn’t be using the emergency room.  Like a lot of sick elderly people who have no place else to go.

Interestingly, the U.S. moved Obamacare forward based on the assumption that universal care will somehow prevent our emergency rooms from overflowing with people who have no health insurance.  Something not apparently working in Sudbury, Ontario.

In the U.S. I gave up on a crowded ER waiting room after waiting for close to 3 hours and drove to another emergency room.  Or, rather, had someone drive me to another emergency room.  For I was in too much pain to drive myself.  But it wasn’t as much pain as those heart attack patients jumping to the front of the line ahead of me apparently.  That’s the thing about triage.  Unless you’re dying or bleeding profusely from some open wound you will sit and wait.  And wait.  And wait.

My experience was long before Obamacare.  Now the American health care system will approach to what they have in Canada.  So what will be the difference once Obamacare becomes similar to the Canadian system?  About 5-16 hours of ER waiting time.  Unless they speed things up by not treating the elderly.  Instead just enrolling them directly into the Liverpool Care Pathway equivalent.  To free up hospital beds.  And emergency room resources.  For a death panel will be the only way to reduce costs and treat more people at the same time.  By not treating those who consume the lion’s share of our health care resources.  The elderly.

The American Left would like to treat Conservatives like the Chinese treat their Political Dissidents

Posted by PITHOCRATES - January 12th, 2013

Week in Review

The mainstream media has a liberal bias.  They support liberal Democrats and their policies.  They report favorably on liberal Democrats.  And attack the conservative opposition.  Liberals have benefitted nicely from this partnership with the mainstream media.  Virtually having their own propaganda ministry.  And they use it to advance a liberal agenda.  They have tried to pass legislation like the Fairness Doctrine to muzzle Rush Limbaugh in particular and talk radio in general.  They belittle Fox News and say it is a Right wing shill for simply not having a liberal bias.  They hate the Tea Party and blame them for any obstruction of liberal policies in Congress.   Some on the Left have even called for the rounding up and imprisoning of these ‘enemies of the state’ who oppose their liberal agenda.  Pining for the days before the Internet, cable television and talk radio when they had full control of the only three news networks.  Which is another reason why liberals love China (see Chinese protest outside newspaper gates in rare censorship demo by NBC News staff and wire reports posted 1/7/2013 on Behind the Wall on NBC News).

Scores of supporters of one of China’s most liberal newspapers demonstrated outside its headquarters on Monday in a rare protest against censorship, backing an unusual strike by journalists against interference by the provincial propaganda chief…

Negotiations between journalists and officials, whom the protesters held responsible for replacing a New Year’s letter to readers that called for a constitutional government with another piece lauding the party’s achievements, continued into the night, a senior journalist who asked not to be named told NBC News…

The protesters, most of them young, laid down small handwritten signs that said “freedom of expression is not a crime” and “Chinese people want freedom…”

The non-profit watchdog group Reporters without Borders ranked China at 174th out of 179 spots in its 2011-2012 press freedom index. The United States ranked 47th in the annual report, six rungs above Hong Kong, a former British colony which is administered separately from China’s mainland.

“China, which has more journalists, bloggers and cyber-dissidents in prison than any other country, stepped up its censorship and propaganda in 2011 and tightened its control of the Internet, particularly the blogosphere,” the group said in a report about the rankings.

What is the difference between liberals and conservatives?  In this case liberals would have sympathies for the Chinese Communist Party.  For they admire the Chinese way.  Just as they admired the Soviet way.  Where smart state planners ran the economy.  And prevented any private business owners from getting rich.  And these smart state planners even ran their personal lives.  Doing things that were for their best interests.  Because they were smarter than the people and knew what was best.  Even if the people disagreed.

Conservatives, meanwhile, would have sympathies for the Chinese people.  For they are simpatico with them.  Facing the same assault on their liberties from an ‘enlightened’ ruling class.  Albeit to a lesser degree than these Chinese lovers of liberty.  So far.
