Chinese Girls can’t Catch a Break from the Womb to University

Posted by PITHOCRATES - March 10th, 2012

Week in Review

Chinese girls just can’t get a break.  From the moment of conception it’s an uphill battle for them.  Because of China’s limit on family size and a culture that favors boys a lot of girls don’t make it out of the womb.  Those who do are treated as second class citizens.  In their families.  And in society.  Because Chinese culture just favors boys.  And now this.  Girls face another injustice for just being smarter than boys (see Bars should be lowered for boys in exams, lawmaker says by Gao Changxin and Wang Hongyi posted 3/9/2012 on China Daily USA).

A lawmaker’s proposal to give male students gender-specific education and easier access to college has sparked controversy.

Wang Ronghua, who is also director of the Shanghai Education Development Foundation, said male students are increasingly under-represented in the country’s leading schools and colleges, and are outperformed by female students in college entrance exams.

This under-representation, he claimed, will have a negative impact on the country’s science and technology innovation and international competitiveness…

The reason for that, Wang said, is that male students mature slower than their female counterparts in self-control and language abilities, which are emphasized in the current entrance exams.

Wang recommends that high school education should be more “differentiated” to give male students opportunities to develop their natural advantages in creative and practical skills…

Sun Baohong, a researcher at Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, said boys don’t do so well at school because they are generally spoiled by their families, as Chinese society traditionally has a preference for sons.

Talk about a political hot potato.  How does an American liberal feminist comment on this story?  Who supports affirmative action to increase the underrepresentation of black students in American universities?  Will they agree in an affirmative action program to increase the enrollment of underrepresented boys in Chinese universities?  Or will they oppose it?  While supporting that same policy in America?  A fascinating conundrum for the liberal feminist.  And one that would be equally fascinating to hear one respond to.

This is something that Condoleezza Rice can sympathize with as both a woman and as a black American.  Whose parents taught her she had to work harder than her white peers to get as far in life as they did.  And she did.  Without complaining about the injustice of it.  And look where it took her.  The fourth most powerful position in America in the presidential line of succession.  Secretary of State.  No small achievement.  For a woman.  Or a man.

So why are the Chinese girls doing better than the boys?  For the same reason Condoleezza Rice had to work harder than her white peers.  Because her white peers were treated like Chinese boys where she grew up.  The deck was stacked against her.  While her white peers were spoiled by their families.  And by society.  But having to work harder made her smarter.  And more successful.  Just like those Chinese girls.  Who are smarter than the Chinese boys.  And these girls can be more successful one day.  If only they had the same opportunities that Condoleezza Rice had in the segregated South.

China’s State Capitalism Export Economy fueled by Cheap Labor, Oppression, Kidnapping, Torture and Asset Seizing

Posted by PITHOCRATES - March 10th, 2012

Week in Review

For those on the left that think China’s state capitalism (aka, crony capitalism, socialism, thugocracy, etc.)  is the way to go should live under their state capitalism for awhile.  To get a fist hand account of just how wonderful it is.  Because, frankly, it’s not that wonderful.  At least for those who live under it (see China: toils of communist boss give insight into workings of the party by Tania Branigan posted 3/9/2012 on The Guardian).

The political drama surrounding an ambitious Chinese Communist party leader, his former ally a “robocop” police chief who apparently tried to defect to the west, a missing businessman, and another who claims to have been tortured, has uncovered bitter tensions in the Communist party as a new generation of leaders prepares to take power…

Meanwhile, a Chongqing businessman appears to have vanished in Beijing shortly after publishing a microblog message saying “the jigsaw puzzle around Wang Lijun” would soon become clear. Zhang Mingyu had claimed to have a recording of Wang warning him to stop accusing another businessman of corruption. Zang’s lawyer, Pu Zhiqiang, said Zhang had been visited by police and other officials who wanted him to return to Chongqing, and was now out of contact. Questioning their jurisdiction, Pu added: “Chongqing police came to Beijing to take him. This is more like a kidnapping.” Chongqing police said they had no information on Zhang.

Earlier this week fugitive Chinese businessman Li Jun described Bo’s anti-crime campaign as a “red terror”. He alleged in interviews with the Financial Times and Washington Post that Chongqing security officials had tortured him and seized his assets. Chongqing officials declined to comment…

Bo also indicated inequality in China had hit a high level, saying the gini coefficient – the most commonly used measure of inequality – had exceeded 0.46, a similar level to the United States and well past the 0.4 figure often seen as an indicator of growing social tension. China’s statistics bureau has said it cannot produce a single national figure because of problems with the survey method. Bo said reducing the wealth gap was a major task for Chongqing, adding: “If only a few people are rich then we’ll slide into capitalism. We’ve failed.”

It is precisely because they don’t have capitalism that there are only a few rich people.  And why they have cheap labor for their export economy.  Because the only rich people are the ruling elite.  The people connected to the ruling elite.  And those connected to the ‘businesses’ that are connected to the ruling elite.  Sure, they fear capitalism.  And don’t want to slip into capitalism.  For a national export economy driven by cheap labor needs the power of the state to keep that labor cheap.  And tools like kidnap, torture and seizing the assets of anyone they deem an enemy of the state are most invaluable in subduing a people.  And keeping their wages cheap.  That’s the big fear of slipping into capitalism.  For if they did they wouldn’t be able to oppress their people anymore.

North Koreans hate Socialism and Try to Escape what some in the West call a Socialist Paradise

Posted by PITHOCRATES - March 10th, 2012

Week in Review

You know who really hates North Korea?  I mean, really, really hates it?  Not just a little.  But a lot.  No, not President Obama.  Not even George W. Bush hated North Korea that much.  No.  The people who really, really hate North Korea are the North Koreans.  Who have to live under tyranny, poverty and famine.  So they try to escape their socialist ‘paradise’ by escaping across the border (see N.Koreans Keep Fleeing Despite Tough Border Controls posted 3/11/2012 on The Chosunilbo).

The group said a five-member family from Musan, North Hamgyong Province suddenly disappeared on Feb. 17. Although the entire border nearby was shut down and searched, nobody was able to find them. Five days later, a worker at a cooperative farm in Onsong, North Hamgyong Province was arrested for crossing the river, and another person was arrested in China after making it across. On Feb. 23, two women who tried to cross the river from Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province were arrested as well…

One defector who held a senior position in the North said, “The North Korean regime is pushing people to construction sites and robbing them of their hard-earned foreign currency” in order to prepare for the centenary of regime founder Kim Il-sung in April.

A researcher at a state-run research institute said, “Poverty is a major factor pushing people out of the country. The underground economy is booming and disparity in wealth has intensified in North Korea. The poorest of the poor, who had a glimmer of hope after the death of Kim Jong-il, now see their hopes thwarted and eventually decide to leave.”

Good Friends said the food shortage is getting worse, with some people saying it is even worse than the famine of the late 1990s. North Korea needs 5 million tons of food a year but only manages to produce 4 million tons. During the famine, food production fell below 3 million tons due to poor harvests and mismanagement.

The Stalinist regime of North Korea is the logical extreme of socialism.  The more the state gets involved in the private sector the worse life gets for those who must live in the private sector.  And when you reach full-blown communism the only way the state can survive is by enslaving their people.  Like in North Korea.  Where they prevent anyone from escaping their socialist ‘paradise’.

The social democracies in Europe still cling to some vestiges of capitalism.  Why?  Because as of now their people can still escape their social-democracy paradises.  But once they cross the Rubicon and their state capitalism collapses under the weight of their massive debt burdens, they’ll have to arm their borders.  To keep their taxpayers from escaping.  So they can continue to fund the ruling class.  And the ever shrinking middle class who survive only because of their connections to the ruling class.  Sort of like it was back in the days of feudalism.  Only with nicer toys.  For those connected enough to have them.

Communists are anti-capitalists.  Just like all those people on the left who attack capitalism in America.  So what’s the difference between the anti-capitalists in oppressive communist regimes and those in the United States?  Protesting is a lot more fun in the United States than in oppressive communist regimes.  Because of capitalism.  It is capitalism that lets the anti-capitalists take a break from their protesting and enjoy a frothy cappuccino at a conveniently located coffee shop.  While protestors in communist regimes are arrested and sent to prison camps.  Or worse.  Why, capitalism even makes protesting capitalism better.  Something the protestors don’t really think about.  Because for them protesting is all about the fun.  Not the ideology.  And they have no desire to live under what they claim to want.  For anyone who enjoys a frothy cappuccino during a nice outdoor protest will have a rude awakening to see how a communist regime responds to their ‘difference of opinion’.

The Government makes our Kids eat Dog Food in our Schools

Posted by PITHOCRATES - March 10th, 2012

Week in Review

The Obama administration has declared war on unhealthy foods.  Because we’re too fat.  And are in general poor health.  Because our mothers aren’t packing healthy enough lunches for their kids.  And McDonald’s and Taco Bell are killing us with unhealthy ground beef (see Seven Million Pounds of “Pink Slime” Beef Destined for National School Lunch Program by Sarah B. Weir posted 3/8/2012 on Shine from Yahoo).

McDonald’s and Taco Bell have banned it, but now the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is buying 7 million pounds of beef containing ammonium hydroxide-treated ground connective tissue and meat scraps and serving it up to America’s school kids…

According to TheDaily.com, the term “pink slime” was coined by microbiologist Gerald Zirnstein, formerly of the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service. He first saw it being mixed into burger meat when he was touring a Beef Products Inc (BPI) facility in 2002 after an outbreak of salmonella. “Scientists in D.C. were pressured to approve this stuff with minimal safety approval,” Zirnstein told The Daily.

“Pink slime,” which is officially called “Lean Beef Trimmings,” is banned for human consumption in the United Kingdom. It is commonly used in dog and chicken food…

Another issue is the ammonium hydroxide, a chemical that is used to kill pathogens such as E. coli. The FDA considers it safe for human consumption but a 2009 expose by the New York Times questioned its safety and efficacy.

Well if that ain’t the pot calling the kettle black.  It turns out that McDonald’s and Taco Bell hold themselves to a higher standard than our government.  For our government will feed dog food to our children in school.  McDonald’s and Taco Bell won’t.  Even though the government will.  But they heard public opinion.  And they’re going to give the public what they want.  Unlike our government.  Who takes a high moralizing tone when it comes to healthy eating.  But then tells our kids ‘dog food is good enough for you’.  At least, when they’re paying for it.

This is an important lesson here.  The private sector wants to please us and gives us a higher quality food.  The government wants to change us and make us take what they give us.  A lower quality food.  And their snarky criticism about our poor eating habits.  Now just imagine the level of quality we’ll get under Obamacare.

Mother sacrifices her Body to Shield her Children from their Collapsing House

Posted by PITHOCRATES - March 10th, 2012

Week in Review

What is love?  Is it a racing heart beat when you’re with someone special?  A flushing of the cheeks from a kiss?  The automatic date on a Friday night that is mutually understood?  No.  It’s none of these things.  These are only emotions.  Feelings.  True love is sacrificing yourself in your love for others.  Like a soldier falling on a live hand grenade to save fellow soldiers.  A husband giving up his seat in a lifeboat and dying so his wife can live.  Or a mother willing to sacrifice everything to shield her children from a collapsing house (see Hero Mom, Stephanie Decker, Recounts Saving Kids From Tornado, Losing Legs by MATT GUTMAN posted 3/5/2012 on ABC News).

As the sky glowered black and Stephanie Decker felt the monster tornado begin to suck her house into its vortex, she knew it would not hold and she had no choice but to shield her two young kids with her own body. She lost her legs in the process…

She was determined to keep her kids safe, and her actions saved them, but at a steep cost. Not only was her home lost, but both of her legs had to be amputated late Friday — one just below the knee, the other just above it…

Both her legs were smashed. She’d also suffered a punctured lung.

Her children, however, were unscathed…

In the wake of her injuries, a benefit fund has been set up for Stephanie Decker at Fifth Third Bank, 392 S Indiana Ave, Sellersburg, IN, 47172.

The strongest love is that love between mother and child.  A mother will do anything to protect her children.  And won’t stop fighting until she has given everything that she can give.  Like Stephanie Decker.  Hero.  Mother.  So think about this hero the next time you’re about to criticize a woman for being just a mother.  For there is no higher calling.  To raise a family.  And to experience this pure love.  A love so strong that a mother will sacrifice everything without hesitation for that love.  Something no career can match.  Unless you’re falling on a live hand grenade to save your fellow soldiers.

May God help Mrs. Decker and her family through this most difficult time.  And may her benefit fund overflow with generosity.

First the State Destroys Public Education then they Destroy the Family

Posted by PITHOCRATES - March 10th, 2012

Week in Review

The US is not the only country having problems with their public education.  The public education in the UK is getting so bad that parents are hardly seeing their kids anymore.  Their kids are either spending long days at school that include 2 or 3 school-provided meals.  Home work clubs.  And after school activities.  Or they’re simply going away to boarding school.  So their parents can work the extra hours to pay for a better education in a private school (see Private schools ‘acting as parents to middle-class children’ by Graeme Paton posted 3/6/2012 on The Telegraph).

Teachers are effectively acting as surrogate parents for thousands of pupils who often eat breakfast at school and remain in extra-curricular activities until the early evening, said Andy Waters, chairman of the Society of Heads of Independent Schools.

He said “more and more responsibility” was falling on schools during the economic downturn because of the sheer rise in parental workloads…

“Our often beleaguered parents need us to provide wrap-around care, breakfasts and evening meals, homework clubs and extra-curricular activities so that they can work the hours needed to earn the wherewithal to pay school fees,” he said…

The comments were made after figures showed an increase in the number of young children being enrolled in boarding schools as a result of the pressure on family life.

No doubt some in government like this trend.  The disintegration of the family.  For the sooner they can get these kids the sooner they can make them proper Social/Liberal/Democrat voters.  So these high-spending governments can keep spending.  Creating greater budget deficits.  And greater stresses on the family.  Until the family will be no more.  And we live in that socialist ‘paradise’ envisioned by George Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-Four.  Where the state is supreme.  And its citizens suffer abject despair.  Living a life of subsistence in a grey world.  While those in the government do quite well.  As they always do.

For awhile, though, there was a time when the people lived well.  And the government served the people.  It was a good run.  Kicked off in England when they introduced us to representative government.  (Which reached back to Ancient Greece.)  Which makes this development in the UK particularly sad.  A great nation in decline.  As are all the social democracies of Europe with their crushing debt burdens.  All of them clearly on the wrong path.  Yet it is the path the current US administration has chosen.  To follow these nations like a lemming to that financial cliff.
