Attacks on Government often by Nutcases Acting Alone

Calm down.  Take a breath.  It’s bad enough we’ve had such a tragedy.  But we don’t need to politicize it.  Families have suffered horrific losses.  So back off.  Don’t use their grief to score cheap political points.

Here’s a thought.  Let’s wait for the facts.  They have someone in custody.  Appears to be a lone gunman.  He may have had a ride to the store.  It’s a little sketchy now.  So we wait.  And let the criminal justice system do its job.  Other politicians should take precautions as they see fit.  Or as their security people advise.  History has shown, though, that attacks on government officials are often by nutcases acting alone.  So if history repeats, as it often does, this horrid episode may be an isolated incident.  Little solace for the victims today, but at least it may be an isolated incident.

And speaking of history, let’s just take a look at some nutcases from our past.  To try and keep things in perspective.

Nutcases Acting Alone – A Rogues Gallery

John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.  Booth was a nutcase.  His successful acting career went to his head.  He was very full of himself.  Pompous and arrogant.  And a bit flamboyant.  Life was a stage and he was always performing.  And he thought that he could change the world.  General Lee had already surrendered the Army of North Virginia.  The South was defeated.  And Lincoln was going to make their defeat as painless as possible.  He gave explicit orders to Generals Grant and Sherman.  There would be no reprisals.  No trials.  No executions.  Just peace.  And union.  But Booth hated Lincoln and abolition.  So he killed Lincoln.  And the South would pay the price during a difficult Reconstruction.

Charles J. Guiteau assassinated President James Garfield.  Guiteau was a nutcase.  He thought he was largely responsible for getting President Garfield elected.  He didn’t.  He wanted an ambassadorship.  Didn’t get one.  He then felt he had to kill the president.  And did.

Leon Czolgosz assassinated President William McKinley.  Czolgosz was a nutcase.  He had an unhappy childhood and blamed America for it.  Read a lot about socialism and anarchism.  Wanted to overthrow the American government.  And stick it to the rich.  So he started at the top.  And killed the president.

Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated President John F. Kennedy.  Oswald was a nutcase.  The consummate loser.  Another one who felt life in America was unfair.  Read a lot of communist literature.  Defected to the Soviet Union.  But the Soviets didn’t really want him.  He eventually came home and was depressed when the press ignored him.  He tried to help the Cubans.  But the Cubans didn’t really want his help.  When they announced the route of the presidential motorcade was to pass in front of the building he worked in, he figured out how to right all the wrongs in his life.  He killed the president.  And he is now known as that pathetic loser that killed JFK.

See a pattern?

The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and Columbine

When Timothy McVeigh blew up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building the Left politicized it.  Said talk radio was to blame.  But McVeigh was a nutcase.  He wasn’t working for a larger organization.  If there was a larger organization involved, they would have stopped him.  Because the attack was stupid.  There was nothing to gain.  And everything to lose.  Did the country change after the bombing?  Perhaps.  A little.  But not in any way McVeigh would have wanted.  The Big Government he feared just got bigger.

McVeigh acted alone at the site.  But he had some help carrying out his stupid plan.  Some friends who were as delusional as he.  Sometimes losers band together.  Like those losers in Columbine.  Pissed off at everyone for their pathetic lives.  So they went on a shooting rampage.  To get even with everyone who was well adjusted and happy.

There are only three sure things in life.  Taxes.  Death.  And nutcases.  Just waiting to do something stupid to get a little attention.

There are Better Ways of Getting Attention

I wasn’t in Arizona, but I can probably guess a few things about the shooter.  Probably unhappy.  Lonely.  Pissed off at the world.  And probably not all that bright.  If he was into politics, it was probably along the lines of a Leon Czolgosz or a Lee Harvey Oswald.  It would be more of a plea for attention than a serious interest in politics.

But there are better ways of getting attention.  Like trespassing into a horse barn and videotaping yourself as a horse sodomizes you (true story).  Of course, that guy died from complications from a torn rectum.  But, boy, did he get a lot of national attention.  And the horse was none the worse for wear.  Now I’m not advising anyone to get intimate with a horse.  I’m just saying there are other ways of getting attention other than shooting innocent people.  The nutcases out there should just try thinking outside the box for a change.  Enough of the killing of innocent people already.

Our condolences go out to the families during this most difficult time.
