The People are Speaking – and They’re Rejecting Pelosi and Obama and Their Very Expensive, Jobless, Liberal Agenda

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 31st, 2010

Ethical and transparent is all well and good with Republicans in power, but devious is just fine when the Democrats are back in power.

The Wall Street Journal’s John Fund sat down with Rep. Brian Baird, a six-term Democrat from Washington State.  He’s not running for a seventh term.  He’s retiring and going home to be with his children while they’re still children.  With a close to his political career, he had nothing to lose speaking his mind.  And he did.  (See Requiem for the Pelosi Democrats posted on line 10/30/2010.)  One thing this Democrat wasn’t happy with was the Democrat leadership.

Mr. Baird recalls that he was “very excited” when his party took control of Congress in 2006, but he saw ominous signs early on. Before the 2006 election, he says, Mrs. Pelosi had 30 members working on a rules package to make the House more ethical and deliberative. “We abandoned all that work after the election, and leaders told us we should trust them to clean things up. I don’t know a single member of the Democratic caucus who saw the final rules package before they voted on it.”

Even her own don’t like her.  Nancy Pelosi was going to have the most ethical and transparent House.  Of course, Pelosi initiated that initiative when the Republicans were in control.  When she was working on a very draconian set of rules for the House of Representatives.  Then, to her shock, the Democrats won a majority in the House and, with it, the leadership positions.  And the 30-member panel stopped their work.  Why?  Those draconian rules had but one purpose; curb Republican power.  With them being in the majority, they didn’t need any set of rules to curb Republican power.  And they sure as hell weren’t going to implement any rules that would curb their own power.  For the devious like to work outside the rules as much as possible.

Obamacare – long and convoluted, best passed without reading (for it’s not as quick a read as War and Peace or Atlas Shrugged).

Once back in power, they were giddy with that power.  They took it as a mandate to change America.  But it wasn’t.  It was a mandate to change Washington.  But they tried their level best to remake America to what the people wanted.  Demanded.  To make it liberal.  To give us Big Government.  This is what they and about 20% of Americans who call themselves ‘liberal’ wanted.  So they ignored the other 80% and went to work.  Their bills were so long and convoluted that it made Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged (both in the 1,000-page class of novel) seem like Readers Digest reading by comparison.  And one of the longest and most convoluted?  Obamacare.  Which few read before voting.

“What the hell were we doing voting on this? I had labor groups come to me and insist the bill was so important we couldn’t wait to know what was in it,” he recalls. “I asked them if they were handed a new union contract and told it was so important they had to agree to it without reading it, would they go along?” They continued to insist he vote for the bill and threatened him with a primary challenger.

Even Nancy Pelosi said that Congress would have to approve it before they could learn what was in it.  Remarkable.  Can you imagine the teachers’ union agreeing to this?  Saying to the school board, “Sure, whatever you say.  If the contract’s fair that’s good enough for me.  We, the teachers, can learn about what we agreed to after we vote to ratify it.”  No, they wouldn’t.  Neither would Nancy Pelosi pass a bill sponsored by Republicans without reading it.  It’s okay for her, though.  Because she’s an elitist.  And doesn’t really care what we ‘rubes’ think anyway.

Obamacare – We’ll pay for filet mignon but get hotdogs and hamburgers, a very expensive mediocrity.

Passing Obamacare required some financial shenanigans.  They needed CBO to score it under a trillion dollars.  Which was like giving everyone filet mignon at the family reunion BBQ by asking everyone to pay $5 to cover the cost.  You can’t do it.  If you’re buying food for everyone and only collecting $5 a head, trust me, you’re serving hot dogs and hamburger.  But if you collect the money first and don’t feed anyone until after, say, 4 years, you’ll be able to stay within your imaginary budget in those first 4 years.

“I warned my fellow Democrats that the insurance companies they were whacking could increase premiums just before the midterm election and blame them for it,” he sighs. “I pointed out that the major benefits wouldn’t kick in till 2014, but the costs were up front. I asked them, where was the political win? There was no real answer.”

Of course, people are not going to enjoy paying for nothing.  They’re not just going to sit idly by with their wallets open, whistling a happy tune.  There will come a point when they’re going to ask what they’re getting for all their money.  And then after 4 years of paying for filet mignon, they’ll finally get to enjoy the benefit they’ve been paying and waiting patiently for so long.  And, guess what?  They’ll still get hot dogs and hamburger.  Because everyone can’t have filet mignon.  It’s just too damn expensive.  So like with everything else Big Government does, we’ll end up with a very expensive mediocrity.

The rubes in flyover country have had enough of deficits.  And enough of the arrogant and condescending Pelosi and Obama.

Nancy Pelosi and most in Congress are elitists.  They are so far removed from ordinary America that it’s like visiting a foreign land for them.  That’s why they call it ‘flyover’ country.  The only thing the country outside their liberal districts is good for is flying over en route to another liberal district.  They either think everyone thinks like they think.  Or that those too stupid to be able to think like they think should just be seen and not heard, grateful for whatever alms they hand out.  The concept of alternate viewpoints is alien to them.  So when advisors told them to go ahead and spend because the people (the people that count – the 20%) don’t care about deficits, they listened.  Well, not so much listened.  But heard what they wanted to hear.

Democrats, he says, will also have to recognize why they lost touch with voters. “Back in September, we had pollsters and strategists from my party tell members that the mass of people didn’t care about the deficit. The mind-boggling lack of reality coming from some of the people who give us so-called advice is stunning.”

Well, people care about deficits.  Like the Left used to care about when Ronald Reagan was running up a deficit the size of a drop in the bucket compared to theirs.  And the amazing thing is, they aren’t done spending yet.  Which is really frustrating the 80%.  The rubes.  The good people in flyover country.  Who are growing weary of the condescending and arrogant Nancy Pelosi and President Obama.

The mandate was to change Washington, not America.  Now, America is polarized.  And it’s business as usual in Washington.

Toby Harnden, American Way, wrote a piece appearing on www.telegraph.co.uk called US midterm elections: Barack Obama’s world turned upside down as Democrats face electoral disaster.  Those familiar with history will be familiar with part of this title.  For tradition says that when Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown in 1781, the British marched out while their band played The World Turned Upside Down.  How very apropos.  For the ruling elite is stunned, much like Lord Cornwallis was, at the thought of being defeated by a bunch of rubes.  So desperate to avoid such a ‘Cornwallian’ disaster, the Left is trying everything within their power.  Even abandoning the lie that brought them into office.

The irony of Obama being the blue-state president is acute. Back in 2004, the then state senator shot to international attention by mocking the pundits who “like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States”.

He declared: “There’s not a liberal America and a conservative America. There’s the United States of America. There’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America. There’s the United States of America.”

Of course, once he got into office, it was all, “I won.  You lost.  Nyah nyah, na nyah nyah.”

Swept into power on a wave of adulation and talk of an historic new era, Obama never felt he needed to work with Republicans. It took him 18 months before he invited Senator Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader, to the White House.

But the center-right, the 80%, were not amused.

The problem was that his world view was that of a conventional liberal Democrat but he was president of a nation that was centre-right. His victory came from those who wanted him to change Washington, not America.

And by governing against the will of the people, America is polarized more than ever.  And it’s business as usual in Washington.  Perhaps a bit dirtier, though.

Jobs talk and liberal BS walks.  Yeah, it’s the economy, stupid.

Obama ran as a centrist.  But once in office, he ruled as a liberal.  The most liberal president ever.  And like Nancy Pelosi, he is getting exasperated by these rubes who are just too stupid to know what’s best for them.  So he’s abandoning that reaching across the aisle nonsense and doing what Democrats do best.

Obama’s high-minded appeals for national unity are no more. His electoral strategy is one of desperate damage limitation. Most pollsters expect Democrats to lose more than 50 seats and control of the House of Representatives.

They will probably keep control of the Senate but at least six seats look lost. Obama’s response has been to “slice and dice” the electorate in the way he condemned. He endured the indignity of being called “dude” on Jon Stewart’s Comedy Central show as the price for enticing young voters.

He’s appeared on the Reverend Al Sharpton’s internet radio show to woo black voters. On Univision radio, he told Latino voters of the need to “punish our enemies”. He routinely attacks Fox News and Karl Rove, President George W. Bush’s former adviser, as a way of energising liberals.

With the realization that America doesn’t want what Pelosi and Obama are pushing, they reach out to those who they once simply took for granted: the young, the blacks and the Latinos.  Who they need more than ever now that so many women are turning to the Republicans this election.  Because there are no jobs.  After 2 years in office.  And trillions of dollars in spending.

What was that the Democrats used to say?  Oh, yes, I think I remember.  “It’s the economy, stupid.”  Duh.

Drug Violence on our Southern Border and Catcalls in New York City are Related – Societal Decay Responsible for Both

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 30th, 2010

The drug cartel violence crosses the U.S. border.  Beheaded body found in Phoenix, Arizona.

It’s getting a little violent on this side of the U.S. border.  The latest?  This from AP’s Amanda Lee Myers’ Arizona beheading raises fears of drug violence posted on apnews.myway.com:

The gruesome case of a man who was stabbed and beheaded in a suburban Phoenix apartment has police investigating whether the killing is potentially the most extreme example of Mexican drug cartel violence spilling over the border.

The police think the victim was stealing drugs from the cartel.  And this was a message to others who might be thinking about doing likewise.

Decapitations are a regular part of the drug war in Mexico as cartels fight over territory. Headless bodies have been hanged from bridges by their feet, severed heads have been sent to victims’ family members and government officials, and bags of up to 12 heads have been dropped off in high-profile locations.

The crime appears confined to members of the drug trade.  It’s a little reassuring for the innocent bystanders close to the crime.  ‘Little’ being the key word.

“I’m terrified,” said [a neighbor], a 47-year-old housekeeper who lives two doors down from the apartment. “I’ve lived here for 20 years and I’ve never heard of that (decapitation) happening, and it was so close to us … Maybe they’re copying what’s happening in Mexico.”

But it hasn’t been exactly restricted to the drug trade.  There has been some collateral damage.

While extreme violence has stayed south of the border for the most part, some of it has spilled over into the U.S.

In March, Arizona rancher Robert Krentz was gunned down while checking water lines on his property near the border. Authorities believe – but have never produced substantive proof – that an illegal immigrant, likely a scout for drug smugglers, was to blame for his killing.

In May 2009, a Mexican drug cartel lieutenant who became an informant for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was shot eight times outside his pricey home in El Paso. The lieutenant, Jose Daniel Gonzalez Galeana, was living in Texas on a visa that ICE gave him, and is believed to be the first ranking cartel member killed in the U.S.

Payan described the spillover as minimal, but said it could increase.

And what is the federal government doing to address border security?  Suing Arizona.  And putting up some signs that warn Americans about unsafe American territory.

Whistles, catcalls and lewd come-ons on the rise in New York City.  Young girls harassed near their schools.

In a serious news story about women being harassed on the streets of New York (see AP’s NYC Considers a No Catcall Zone posted on www.nbcnewyork.com on 10/29/2010), the article starts off with a most inappropriate photo.  It shows a woman’s feet in what appears to be 6-inch stiletto heels.  The kind of shoes you’d see a stripper wear on stage.  Or so I’ve heard.  One thing for certain, though, any man looking at the photo is going to imagine a smoking hot woman attached to those feet.  The kind of a woman that burly construction workers would whistle at.  And, to be fair, a woman dressed like THAT may be disappointed if they didn’t.  So it’s a rather poor choice of a photo to use with this article.  For although we know:

Whistles, catcalls and lewd come-ons from strangers are all too familiar to New York City women, who say they are harassed multiple times a day as they walk down the street.

Some men are clearly crossing the line.

A City Council committee heard testimony Thursday from women who said men regularly follow them, yell at them and make them feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Advocates told stories of preteens and teenagers being hounded by adult men outside city schools and pleaded for government to address the problem.

And what is the city of New York doing about this issue?

Hollaback [an organization formed five years ago to stand up to street harassment] is pushing the city to commission a study, a public awareness campaign and perhaps even legislation, including “no-harassment zones” around schools to protect young women.

Madonna, Brittany Spears and Glee go too far in sexualizing young girls?

Now, what do these two stories have in common?  Although the victims aren’t responsible for the crime/harassment against them, the society that they are a part of is.

The Left wants to give condoms to our kids.  And make abortions available when a pregnancy happens.  We need to be progressive.  Kids are having sex.  We need to stop being so puritan and treat our kids as adults.  Like the television show Glee does.  In that show adults play high school kids.  And their audience is primarily high school kids and younger.  They’ve had some pretty questionable content on that show.  Madonna and Brittany Spears video parodies.  And they’ve appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, dressed as high school kids.  But you could look up one of the girls’ skirt and see her little white panties.  And the same ‘girl’ just did a GQ photo shoot, posing inside a high school.  Again, showing her little white panties.   Of course, these kids are really adults. But they play kids.

The Left attacks the world of Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best & Ozzie and Harriet.  But you gotta admit this; they didn’t objectify women.  You didn’t see any of them sexualizing young girls.  And New York City didn’t have council meetings discussing possible legislation banning catcalls around schools.

Marijuana, cocaine, heroin and crystal meth supplied by Mexico to meet demand in the United States.

They’re trying to legalize marijuana again in California.  They say it’s no big deal.  It’s no worse than drinking.  And all that talk about it being a gateway drug to the stronger stuff?  That’s just ridiculous.  Then again, that stronger stuff is crossing the border along with the marijuana.  Which begs the question, why?  Who’s using the harder stuff?  People who’ve moved on from marijuana?

The vast majority of drugs coming in from Mexico and causing all that trouble on the border is marijuana.  There’s big money in Mexican marijuana.  And it will get bigger and bloodier if California legalizes it.  More customers.  And lower prices (legal things tend to be cheaper than illegal things).  The drug gangs will fight to expand their territory.  And fight to not lose any of their territory.  So there’s marijuana.  Also coming in from Mexico is cocaine, black tar heroin and, of course, crystal meth.  Meth is a booming business since they restricted the sale of decongestants in the states.  They have factories in Mexico creating this stuff wholesale.  And shipping it to the United States.  Why?  Because we keep saying drugs are no big deal.

Sex and drugs responsible for societal decay?

Sex and drugs.  Everybody does it/them.  We need to accept it.  Treat kids as adults.  And when there are consequences to this behavior, we play the blame game.  It’s not school condoms and abortion on demand that is making people look at girls/women as sexual objects.  It’s men acting as animals.  For girls/women it’s empowering and liberating.  But it’s primitive animal behavior for men.  Of course, women can’t be empowering or liberating sexually without men.  So men are obliging.  And they’re apparently thinking about it all of the time.  Even when working on a construction site.

And when it comes down to pointing the finger of blame for the border violence, I don’t know if we can point it at just the drug gangs.  I mean, they wouldn’t be doing what they are doing if it wasn’t for all those Americans eagerly looking to buy what they are selling.

So, when men whistle at a girl/woman, or there is a drug-gang murder on the border, society’s to blame.  And it’s important to emphasize that the individual victims themselves are not responsible.  It is the societal decay that has preconditioned the predator.   They think it’s all right.  Because everyone is having sex.  And doing drugs.

Europeans Wonder why Americans Don’t Love Obama as Much as They Do

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 29th, 2010

Obama falls from grace because the American people have learned what the mainstream media wouldn’t tell them; the truth.

America, Europe, the Middle East, hell, the whole world had a love affair with Barrack Obama.  A man who did nothing but serve a partial term as a U.S. senator.  Before that?  Community organizer.  His resume had a lot of white space on it.  He is the most inexperienced person to ever become president.  Even Sarah Palin, who the Left disparages as stupid and experienced, has executive experience.  She was more qualified than Obama to be president.  Based on their experience.  Place their resumes side by side and no one can dispute this.  Yet Palin is stupid and inexperienced.  And Obama is the second coming of Christ.  And when the results of Obama’s policies reflect his experience, those infatuated express shock and disbelief (see Europe ‘dismayed’ as midterms highlight Obama’s struggles by Marian Smith, msnbc.com).

“They’re very confused as to how [Americans] could vote for Obama and then two years later turn around and vote for a completely different set of policies,” Sarah Oates, professor of political communication the University of Glasgow, told msnbc.com.

There’s a simple reason for this confusion.  The mainstream media was also infatuated with Obama.  They endorsed his candidacy.  But they never vetted him.  No one knew anything about Obama during the campaign.  They ignored his far-left associations with Reverend Wright and Bill Aires.  They didn’t discuss his criticism of the U.S. Constitution (it didn’t empower government enough).  Or his policy guide: Rules for Radicals by Saul Alinsky.  The mainstream media’s gross journalistic malfeasance hid the real man from the American voter.  The real Obama is not the Obama the American people voted for.  Hence his fall from grace.

Jimmy Carter handed off a worse economy than Bush.  But things got better when Ronald Reagan cut taxes.

Obama has told us ad nauseam that he inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression.  Some would argue that the numbers were pretty bad when Ronald Reagan took office.  But he followed Democrat Jimmy Carter.  So they don’t like to bring up his atrocious economy.  Because the economy he handed down to Ronald Reagan was pretty atrocious.  I mean, they didn’t use words like ‘malaise’, ‘stagflation’ or ‘misery index’ during the Bush economy.  And they’re not using them during the Obama economy.  But you repeat the lie enough, people just accept it as fact.

However, Obama remains broadly well-liked and many Europeans think the disenchantment that many American voters have been expressing is unfair.

“What he inherited was so enormous that no American president could have fixed it,” Manfred Gortemaker, professor of modern history at Germany’s University of Potsdam, told msnbc.com.

The bad economy Obama inherited was a long time in the making.  Because the Democrats were in power for a long time.  And it was their passion that caused it.  Affordable housing.  Putting people into houses who couldn’t afford houses.  Ask anyone which party you think of when it comes to affordable housing and they’re not going to say Republican.  The American disenchantment is with Democrat Big Government.  And Obama believes in Big Government.  The bigger the better.  America just can’t afford it anymore.  There isn’t enough money left in the private sector to steal to pay for it.  And Obama just wants to spend more.  But spending doesn’t work.  It didn’t help Carter.  That’s why he lost to Reagan.  Reagan cut taxes.  And, you know what?  That worked.  The electorate wants more Reagan.  Less Obama.

It’s good t be king.  As long it’s not 1790 France.  Or 2010 America where the Tea Party is spoiling a good time for the ruling elite.

The French can’t figure out the Tea Party movement.

“In all the French newspapers and magazines, people are writing, trying to figure it out,” Bacharan said.

Michelle Obama stayed at a 5-star Spanish resort while Americans were suffering near 10% unemployment and seeing banks foreclose on their homes.  There have been other vacations at very expensive and exclusive resorts.  And a lot of golf outings.  Obama has played more golf in 2 years than George W. Bush has in his 8 years.  Then there’s the latest presidential vacation.  They’re going to India.  They’ll be taking 40 airplanes.  Three helicopters.  A bunch of armored cars.  And they’ll be staying at the 5-star Taj Mahal hotel.  And only them.  The Obama party has booked the whole place.  It’s good to be king.

Now, I’m poking a little fun at my French friends.  That ‘good to be king’ line comes from Mel Brooks History of the World Part One.  But it’s something the French should understand.  While the masses are suffering, the Obamas are living like royalty.  They are detached from ordinary America.  Cold and detached.  Sort of like King Louis XVI and his queen, Marie Antoinette.  We’re just waiting for Michelle Obama to say, “Let them eat cake.”  Of course, we have the right to vote.  Unlike the people did in 1790 France with their ruling elite.  And it’s that right that the Tea Party is exercising.  Because they feel the way the French felt in 1790.  (Without the famine, of course.)

The Tea Party are not Nazis; Obama is not Hitler.  But the Nazis were Big Government liberals

The mainstream media has been falsely reporting a ‘Nazi’ element within the Tea Party.  They repeat the lie so often that many accept it as fact.  Even the Germans, no doubt sensitive to anything Nazi, are writing about it.

“The Holocaust was the result of murderous ideological fanaticism of the kind not to be found in leaders forced to face re-election every four years,” [a Der Spiegel newspaper] editorial said. “It is hard to imagine even the most hard-bitten Tea Party activist sincerely believing that President Barack Obama wants to systematically murder over 6 million people like Adolf Hitler did. And that is necessarily the implication.”

The German people elected Adolf Hitler to office in free elections.  He did not campaign on the Holocaust, though.  He did adopt what would eventually be Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals.  He identified, isolated and attacked his enemies.  The Jews.  Obama has identified, isolated and attacked his enemies.  The Tea Party.  George W. Bush.  And Republicans in general.  Hitler was an environmentalist.  Obama is an environmentalist.  Hitler expanded state power.  Obama wants to expand state power.  Hitler controlled state media.  Obama has a willing and complicit mainstream media.  Hitler nationalized industries.  Obama nationalized industries.  Take away the crazy, the Holocaust and the militarism, and Hitler was just another Big Government liberal.  Like Mussolini.  Like Stalin.  And FDR.  And as Big Government liberals, they lied to their electorate to get elected (well, except for Stalin).  Then people learned the truth.

That said, Obama is no Hitler.  He is not a Nazi.  Sure, some kooks on the fringe say stupid things.  Just like some on the Left said George W. Bush was another Hitler.  Called him a Nazi.  But we need to stop the crazy. On both sides.  Obama got a pass by the mainstream media during the campaign.  They worshipped and adored him.  Got the people to vote for him.  And now people have learned the truth.  And here’s why Obama is NOT Adolf Hitler.  We can fix our mistake in the voting booth.

LESSONS LEARNED #37: “The Decriminalization of Drugs. Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t.” -Old Pithy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 28th, 2010

Drugs are Killing Some of our Kids’ Cool Celebrity Role Models…and Some of Our Kids

Kids going through adolescence look up to role models.  Celebrity role models who look cool.  So they can aspire to that level of cool.  To have more friends.  Be popular.  To be popular with kids of the opposite sex.  And nothing does that like behaving like a celebrity.  Dressing like them.  Smoking like them (Joe Camel didn’t make kids smoke; movie stars and musicians did).  Having sex like them (in public like Alanis Morissette sings about in You Oughta Know).  And getting high like them.

Black Sabbath fired their front man Ozzy Osborne for his excessive drug use.  Steven Adler was fired from Guns n’ Roses for his excessive drug use.  Adler used the same drug cocktail that killed John Belushi, Chris Farley, River Phoenix and Jean-Michel Basquiat, to name a few.  One of Adler’s speedballs, though, gave him a stroke and left him with a speech impediment.  Osborne?  It’s hard to see or hear him and not think ‘drugs’.  Keith Richards, too.  (Some claim that it’s a miracle that either has lived so long.)  Amy Winehouse’ irregular heart beat resulted from a long use of cocaine.  John Entwistle died from a cocaine-induced heart attack.  Ol’ Dirty Bastard died from a cocaine & prescription drug induced heart attack.  Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose of a prescription drug cocktail (oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine).  Bradley Nowell died from a heroin overdose just before Sublime’s major label album debut (which included three hits).  Danella Westbrooke lost the cartilage in her nose (and her profile) due to the massive amounts of cocaine she sniffed.  And there are a host of other celebrities whose past drug use is catching up to them in their old age.  Such as David Crosby’s liver disease.  His liver transplant resulted from his many years of drug abuse.

These are some expensive black market drugs.  But this isn’t a problem if you have a lot of money.  If these drugs were decriminalized, they would be cheaper.  And much more plentiful.  Meaning that they wouldn’t be limited to the rich and famous.  If they were less expensive, kids starting their drug exploration wouldn’t have to limit their exploration to the less expensive stuff (stealing from their parents’ medicine cabinet, sniffing butane, smoking marijuana, etc.).  They could broaden their horizon.  And why not?  They’re going to do it anyway.  And not everyone becomes an addict.  Or dies.

The British East Indian Company Used Indian Opium to Fix Their Balance of Trade with China

In the 19th century, mercantilism ruled.  It was all about balance of trade.  Nations wanted to export their goods.  And import gold and silver that paid for those goods.  Both Great Britain and China pursued these policies.  This became a problem for Great Britain whose people grew very fond of Chinese silk and porcelain and other Chinese exotic goods.  But the Chinese weren’t buying anything British.  Great Britain was importing more than she was exporting to China.  This meant there was a net silver flow from Great Britain to China.  And this wasn’t good mercantilism.  For the British.  It was very good mercantilism for the Chinese.  The British needed something to sell to the Chinese.  Something that only they could sell so the Chinese would have no choice but to buy from Great Britain.  And the British East India Company had just the thing.  Indian opium.

And it worked.  It reversed the balance of trade.  Silver was leaving China at an alarming rate.  But it was also turning the majority of Chinese males near the coastal cities into junkies.  Business suffered.  The civil service suffered.  With less available to buy the standard of living fell.  A dysfunctional civil service compounded that problem.  Rampant opium use was undermining Confucian values.  The Chinese begged the British to destroy the Indian poppy fields.  The British replied that, with the huge Chinese demand for opium, if they didn’t sell it, someone else would.  It would only cost the British their lucrative trade.  It wouldn’t solve the Chinese opium addiction problem.

Well, that led to war.  Two of them.  The Opium Wars.  Neither of which ended well for the Chinese.  They lost a lot.  Chinese coastal cities became virtually British.  Hong Kong became British.  Trade favored the British and other foreign nationals.  It led to much bitterness and resentment.  And to the Boxer Rebellion in 1898 to throw the imperialists out of China.  Which didn’t work all that well either.  But the British did help the Chinese to break their opium addiction.  If the Chinese worked from within to reduce consumption, the British would cut back on their opium importations.  Opium use declined in China.  As did opium imports.  With the decline in consumption, no new sources of opium rushed to fill an unmet demand.

The Americans and the Russians to Collaborate over Afghanistan’s Poppy Fields, The Netherlands Making their Legalized Marijuana less Legal

Well, there are still poppy fields in Southwest Asia.  And a high demand for heroin not too far away.  In Russia.  And it’s killing them.  Literally.   Some tens of thousands die each year from overdoses.  The collateral damage (broken families, lost jobs, the spread of AIDS from shared needles, neglected children, etc.) from drug addiction probably touches 10 times that number.  And the drug trade crime kills who knows how many more.  From the poppy fields in Afghanistan through the Central Asian states into Russia herself, there is an explosion of violence for this lucrative drug trade.  How bad is it?  Russia may return to Afghanistan to help the Americans in eradicating these poppy fields and shutting down the drug laboratories.  (For those who do not know, the Russian/Soviet war in Afghanistan was Russia’s Vietnam War.  And, let us not forget that both of these wars became proxy wars between America and the former Soviet Union.  So America and Russia working together in Afghanistan is a big thing).

Russia is even advising America against the ballot initiative in California to legalize marijuana.  Viktor Ivanov, Russia’s top drug official, went to Los Angeles to campaign against the ballot proposal.  He warned that legalizing marijuana will start a downward spiral into drug addiction.  We can understand heroin.  But marijuana?  A soft drug?  The Netherlands have long had legalized marijuana there.  It works there.  Why not in California?

Well, Netherland has had its problems with its marijuana coffee shops and cafes.  There’s been trouble in their border areas.  Tourists coming in just to get high.  And a lot of people have been going there.  Business is booming.  High demand.  Which have brought in crime as people vie to supply that demand.  There have been problems with school kids so they’ve banned these coffee shops/cafes within certain distances of schools.  And they’ve been selling a more potent cannabis, which is knocking the casual user on their ass.  Or impairing their motor skills.  And, with the rising amount of trouble from the drug tourists, they’re restricting sale to Dutch citizens only.  One other note.  Drug enforcement has been stepped up at Schiphol airport.  Why?  To counter a rising cocaine traffic coming in from the Caribbean.

Drugs, Drug Wars and the War on Drugs Take their Toll as they Kill and Destroy

Kids are experimenting with drugs.  They’ll start with the softer stuff.  Like in the Netherlands.  But they’ll probably move on to something more potent.  Like in the Netherlands.  There appears to be a progression.  From less dangerous drugs to more dangerous drugs.  You can bet that John Belushi, Chris Farley, River Phoenix and Jean-Michel Basquiat, et al, started their drug use with something less dangerous than cocaine-heroin speedballs.  And look at them now.  Of course you can’t because their dead and buried.  But you get the point.

Epidemic use in China destroyed a millennium-old culture.  Ended a dynasty.  Caused multiple wars.  They finally kicked the habit.  With the help of the British (who helped give them the problem in the first place).  But the poppy fields just found new users.  In Russia.  And elsewhere.  It’s so bad that former enemies are joining forces on a former battleground to fight a new common enemy.  And the Russians are warning Californians not to legalize marijuana.  We’ve certainly come a long way from the days of the Cold War where the Soviets would have helped that initiative pass to help bring down their one-time enemy.

Drugs are a problem.  A big problem.  They kill and destroy.  Drug wars kill and destroy.  As does the war on drugs.  Damned if you do.  Damned if you don’t.  So what to do?  Well, imagine two worlds.  One where drugs are plentiful and cheap.  And one where no one uses drugs.  Which world you’d rather live in?  Which world do you want your children to live in?  I thought so.  And there’s your answer.

Big Government, Fraud, Enemies and Wannabe Kings

Joe Biden Touts the Greatness of Big Government by Citing One of its Greatest Frauds

At a fundraising stop in Manhattan, Joe Biden said this (see VPOTUS Joe Biden: Dems Will “Keep The Senate And Win The House” by Celeste Katz in The Daily Politics):

“Every single great idea that has marked the 21st century, the 20th century and the 19th century has required government vision and government incentive,” he said. “In the middle of the Civil War you had a guy named Lincoln paying people $16,000 for every 40 miles of track they laid across the continental United States. … No private enterprise would have done that for another 35 years.”

Joe Biden ain’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.  Or he just thinks no one will know any better.  That we stopped our learning with our liberal public high school diploma.  Or our liberal university degrees.  Or he is just lying to us.

The Great Northern and the Milwaukee built their transcontinental railroads with private capital.  And without all of the corruption of the government funded line Biden talked about.  For a brief recounting of the great Crédit Mobilier Scandal, see LESSONS LEARNED #35: “Not only is ignorance bliss, but it’s a godsend to Big Government.” -Old Pithy on this same website.  The pertinent part of that post follows here:

Go West, Young Man

The transcontinental railroad was making poor progress during the Civil War.  Because it was starved for capital.  No one would invest.  Few doubted that they could build it.  Even if they could, few doubted it would ever make money.  The West was mostly raw, unsettled land.  There was nothing to transport.  Nothing to earn revenue.  It was a huge investment with a huge risk.  Investors are smart when it comes to money.  And they saw the transcontinental railroad as a one-way road that their money would go down and never return.  They needed something.  Big Government.

When it comes to throwing money away on a losing investment there is but one place to go.  Uncle Sam.  With the power to tax, the federal government has huge piles of money to play with.  So here’s what happened to build that railroad.  Union Pacific (UP) created a shell company called Crédit Mobilier (CM) to finance and build the railroad.  These companies were one and the same.  Without getting too complicated, UP sold their ‘worthless’ stock to CM at par.  Now, CM being a finance and construction company, a train never had to run over the road they were building to make a profit.  Union Pacific, on the other hand, needed trains running on that new track.  They were a transportation company.  They earned a profit from transporting goods on their trains.  This meant it could take years before UP could even hope to earn a profit on the new transcontinental railroad.  CM, on the other hand, could start earning a profit with the first invoice they submitted for construction.  And they did.

CM had strong revenues.  They submitted grossly inflated construction invoices to UP.  UP added a small construction management fee and submitted them to the government.  The government paid UP.  UP paid CM.  With revenues far exceeding their costs, CM made obscene profits.  CM stock took off into the stratosphere.  Some of which was sold to Congressmen at a deep discount who in turn realized obscene capital gains if they sold their stock.  Or collected obscene dividends if they held onto their stock.  In return for this sweetheart deal, they approved all cost overruns.  Killed any legislation unfavorable to UP/CM.  Provided lucrative incentives to build track on the worst ground in the most indirect path (to maximize the railroad’s mineral rights).  Provided little to no oversight on the construction of the road (some track was built on ice, with cheap steel and flimsy wooden trestles wherever possible).  When east met west the different railroads kept on building, parallel to each other to keep billing Uncle Sam.  All paid by the public treasury.  By the taxpayer.  The little guy.  Being raped and pillaged by their own representatives.

In an effort to praise Big Government, Biden picks one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated by Big Government.  Like I said, he isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Big Government and Property Rights – Mutually Exclusive in Venezuela

Meanwhile, in Venezuela, Big Government is on the move.  Hugo Chavez, Obama supporter and friend of Communist Fidel Castro, is showing what Big Government does best.  Abolish property rights.  They just stole an American company (see AP’s Chavez Orders Expropriation of Owens-Illinois).  Why?

The leftist leader criticized the company’s practices in the country, saying it had been “taking away the money of Venezuelans” and exploiting local people. Chavez did not detail his complaints about the company.

Exploited the local people?  They were probably the best jobs available in the local economy.  And if it wasn’t for Owens, there wouldn’t have been a plant to provide jobs for the local people in the first place.  The lesson here?  The state can’t create (despite what Chavez or Biden says), they can only take.  And when the state is above the law, you can keep on taking.  As Chavez said.

He said in his speech that more expropriations are planned.

Like Nixon Like Obama – They Check Their Enemies List and they Check it Twice Like Kings are Wont to Do

President Obama was speaking to a group of Latinos recently on Univision Radio.  He said:

I am president.  I’m not king.  I can’t do these things just by myself.  If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying we’re gonna punish our enemies and we’re gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us, if they don’t see that kind of upsurge in voting in this election, then I think it’s going to be harder, and that’s why I think it’s so important that people focus on voting on November 2nd.

Punish our enemies?  (Does Obama have an enemies list like Richard Nixon?)  Reward our friends?  Oh, he wishes he was king.  So he could do what Hugo Chavez can do.  Dispense with these inconvenient elections.  To have absolute power.  But, so far, America is still free.  So the best he can do is to grow Big Government.  To reward his friends.  And punish his enemies.  Like Congress did during the Crédit Mobilier scandal.  The kind of corruption that can put a tingle up Joe Biden’s leg.

FUNDAMENTAL TRUTH #37: “The Decriminalization of Drugs. Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t.” -Old Pithy

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 26th, 2010

Like Father like Daughter – Even after You’ve Quit Drugs and Gone Conservative

It was about the 7th grade when kids I knew were getting into drugs.  I can remember being at a McDonald’s once after a high school football game (I went to that game with my brother and his friends).  Some of my 7th grade classmates were there.  When one saw me he pulled a joint out of his jacket and waved it in front of me, saying, “Do you want a doobie?”  He was an old friend.  He became a burn out.  I didn’t.  So he made fun of me in front of his new stoner friends.  Incidentally, a couple of these stoner friends are now dead.

One of those guys was a pretty good friend of mine.  I turned him on to Monty Python.  He could do all the voices.  And the skits.  Had them all memorized.  Funny guy.  He became a stoner in high school.  He tried to get high off whatever he could.  He came to school with a busted lip once.  His father punched him.  When he caught him sniffing gasoline in the garage.  His father tried to help him.  Knock some sense into him.  Maybe he did.  For when he died in a car crash (he was doing something like 80 on a 35 mph street and tried to pass someone.  Clipped the guy’s rear bumper and flipped his car over and over again), he wasn’t driving stoned.  He was driving drunk.

I once worked with a guy who was a reformed burn out.  He was a hardcore stoner in middle school.  Skipped a lot of school to get high.  Then he had a kid when he was in the 11th grade.  He then quit school, quit drugs and pumped gas.  Changed his life.  He became super dad.  He was a conservative and father of 5 when I met him.  Sometimes when he was talking to you he’d stop in mid-sentence, lost.  He’d then laugh and say something about all those lost brain cells he’d like to have back.  He had dreams of sending his daughter (an honor student) to that conservative college in Michigan.  Hillsdale College.  He wasn’t happy that she wanted to go to a party school instead.  But, at least, she was going to college.  And she did.  Until she got pregnant.  And dropped out.  Like father like daughter.  Well, sort of.

Sex, Drugs and Hip Hop – ‘Cool’ Equity for the Responsible Drug User

Once upon a time it was sex, drugs and rock and roll.  Now it’s probably a little more hip hop than rock and roll.  But it’s still the same.  Young kids engage in risky behavior.  They don’t practice prudence in their choices.  For them, it’s all about the id.  The pursuit of pleasure.  And the avoidance of things unpleasant.  In other words, childlike behavior.  Even though we should know better.  Pleasure now.  Pain never.  We’re only here for a short time.  And it would be a shame that if you died young you didn’t have a lot of pleasure first.

A lot of kids get pleasure from getting high.  Drugs are a part of sex, drugs and hip hop, remember.  Not only is it fun, but it says cool all over it.  Rebellious.  You get some ‘cool’ equity with the ‘in crown’.  Until someone dies.  But after a suitable period of mourning, life goes on.  I mean, the kid who dies, why, they were just stupid.  Those who say that will say it can’t happen to them.  Because they get high responsibly.

But there are addictions.  And there are fatal overdoses.  There’s AIDS passed via shared needles.  Heart attacks from cocaine rushes.  Neglected children as a parent gets high in the next room.  Violent crime by someone whacked out on PCP who can feel no pain.  Organ failure (we exclude drug addicts from transplant lists because their drug use will only kill their new transplants, too).  Broken marriages.  Lost families.  Dead children.  Ruined careers.  Stroke.  Diminished motor functions.  Etc.  Of course, these people all wanted these things to happen.  Because all drug users who haven’t yet had these things happen to them say these things never will for they are responsible drug users.  And as my daughter often says, “Yeah, whatever.”  The carnage of drug abuse begs to differ with the responsible users.  There is a social cost to drug use.  And it’s a pretty hefty price at that.

Sex and Drugs Make Happy Pimps

Not yet mentioned are the costs we incur because of the illegality of drugs.  Victim crimes.  And, of course, victimless crimes.  When something is illegal, it becomes expensive.  Very, very expensive.  And one of the downsides of being an addict compounds the problem of trying to pay for these expensive drugs.  Drug addicts have erratic lives.  They live from high to high.  Which doesn’t mesh well with an 8-hour work day.  Some can.  For awhile.  But eventually the addiction takes control and they lose their jobs.  So, to support their habits, some become thieves.  Do a little breaking and entering.  A little pock picking.  A little car jacking.  Eventually ending up in jail for the same reasons they can’t get regular work.  The addiction takes control.  And they make dumb mistakes.  And get caught.

And then there are those who are not stealing but selling.  Sexual favors.  Desperate for their next fix, they walk the streets looking for a john.  The pain of withdrawal will make them take great risks.  Some johns may beat them up.  Rob them (for what little they may have).  Kill them.  They may receive a sexually transmitted disease.  Or pass one on.  They may get pimped out buy someone who pays them in their drug fixes.  Until they’re no longer marketable.   In which case their pimp may throw them back onto the street.  Or worse.  And if she dies?  So what.  There are always more where she came from.  Sex and drugs.  What pimp could ask for anything more?

Addiction is a powerful thing.  People will do things they never thought they would for their next fix.  Combine that with the illegality of drugs and it’s a very profitable enterprise.  Not for the uses.  But for the dealers.  Who get a very high price for their product.  And an addicted customer that must keep buying.

John Lennon and Nancy Reagan May Have Agreed to ‘Just Say No’

America’s southern border is bleeding.  The U.S. demand for illegal drugs is a coveted market.  And drug gangs are very protective of their territory.  Drug violence is appalling.  Much like it was in the days of Al Capone during Prohibition.  Even worse.  In Capone’s day, they may have sent a message to a cop by shooting him.  Today they behead a cop and send the severed head back to police headquarters to get their message across.  And the violence is spilling over into civilian life near the border.  Kidnapping.  Ransoms.  Murders.  It’s so bad that the federal government has posted signs on American soil advising Americans that they are not safe on that American soil.

So there are two sides of the decriminalization of drugs coin.  The one is the social costs of drug use.  They’re illegal now and the social costs are staggering.  Decriminalizing drugs is not likely to reduce addiction and all that comes with it.  On the other hand, illegal drugs are expensive which makes addiction that much more costly.  Which makes some users resort to crime to support their habits.  And it empowers drug gangs.  It would appear neither choice is very appealing.

Of course, there is one option that would get rid of both problems.  Like Nancy Reagan said.  Just say ‘no’.  And if people just said ‘no’, that lucrative U.S. market would disappear.  No addiction.  No drug wars.  Imagine that.  A world in which there were no drugs to kill or die for.  Even John Lennon, a recovered heroin addict and peacenik, could appreciate that.

America’s War with Iran in Iraq

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 25th, 2010

Apology Tour Diplomacy to Get Ahmadinejad to Like Us

Most everyone was for going to war in Iraq.  They, Republican and Democrat alike, read the same intelligence.  Saddam Hussein was a bad man.  He had some nasty weapons he didn’t document destroyed.  He expelled UN inspectors.  He was brutally suppressing the Kurds.  Torturing and killing dissidents.  And, of course, he had a record of using chemical weapons against the Iranians and the Kurds.

So there was pretty much a united front at the beginning.  But elections come every 2 years.  The Democrats would eventually have to get their hate on.  And, boy, did they.  They all started to dump on the Iraq War.  Never mind that it got Saudi Arabia to crack down on Wahhabi funding of Al Qaeda.  Bush lied.  People died.  Iraq was nothing more than a breeding ground for Al Qaeda.  It created anti-American sentiment.  And plunged Iraq into a civil war.  The Bush administration pointed to the foreign influence.  Especially that of Iran.  But the Left said that the liar George W. Bush just wanted to expand the war into Iran.

We were just bullies.  That’s why the world hated us.  Well, one presidential candidate said he would change that.  He would talk to the people that hated us.  He would meet Iranian president Ahmadinejad.  Without preconditions.  To say, hey, you’re okay.  We’re okay.  What do you say?  Friends?  This candidate would go on to win the election.  He became president.  And President Obama went on a world wind apology tour.  He denigrated the United States.  Bowed to Muslim royalty.  And praised Islam.  And how did all that work?

Ahmadinejad Making Iran the New Evil Empire?

Not good.  For Iran was fueling the Iraqi insurgency.  And Ahmadinejad rebuffed the love of the Obama administration and kept killing Americans.  That fact is made very clear in another dump of classified documents by WikiLeaks.  The New York Times reviewed those documents and Michael R. Gordon and Andrew W. Lehren wrote on 10/22/2010 (see Leaked Reports Detail Iran’s Aid for Iraqi Militias):

Citing the testimony of detainees, a captured militant’s diary and numerous uncovered weapons caches, among other intelligence, the field reports recount Iran’s role in providing Iraqi militia fighters with rockets, magnetic bombs that can be attached to the underside of cars, “explosively formed penetrators,” or E.F.P.’s, which are the most lethal type of roadside bomb in Iraq, and other weapons. Those include powerful .50-caliber rifles and the Misagh-1, an Iranian replica of a portable Chinese surface-to-air missile, which, according to the reports, was fired at American helicopters and downed one in east Baghdad in July 2007.

Iraqi militants went to Iran to be trained as snipers and in the use of explosives, the field reports assert, and Iran’s Quds Force collaborated with Iraqi extremists to encourage the assassination of Iraqi officials.

The reports make it clear that the lethal contest between Iranian-backed militias and American forces continued after President Obama sought to open a diplomatic dialogue with Iran’s leaders and reaffirmed the agreement between the United States and Iraq to withdraw American troops from Iraq by the end of 2011.

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) have killed or maimed most American troops.  And most of those devices were no doubt the result of Iranian material and/or training.  But why would they help their archenemy?  They hate Saddam.  They hate Iraq.  They fought a bloody 8-year war with Iraq.  So why would they help the Iraqis fight the Americans?

The political struggle between the United States and Iran to influence events in Iraq still continues as Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki has sought to assemble a coalition — that would include the anti-American cleric Moktada al-Sadr — that will allow him to remain in power. But much of the American’s military concern has revolved around Iran’s role in arming and assisting Shiite militias.

Shiite Iran is helping the Shiite militias in Sunni Iraq.  Unable to beat Iraq in war, they’re now trying it through subterfuge.  But it doesn’t end there.

Established by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini after the 1979 Iranian revolution, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has expanded its influence at home under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a former member of the corps, and it plays an important role in Iran’s economy, politics and internal security. The corps’s Quds Force, under the command of Brig. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, has responsibility for foreign operations and has often sought to work though surrogates, like Hezbollah.

And where has Ahmadinejad been lately?  Lebanon.  And what does he want to do?  Incinerate Israel.  And what are they bringing on line?  Nuclear reactors.  They’re destabilizing Iraq.  Destabilizing the Middle East.  Allied with Hezbollah.  Helping them with their fight against Israel.  Ahmadinejad is pushing a lot of nations towards war.  You know, he’s a lot like Osama bin Laden.  Only more dangerous.  The new Evil Empire?  Well, they are on the axis of evil.  They’ve been killing Americans.  Evil, yes.  And yet our president is trying to make nice with him.

Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down this Wall

Ronald Reagan recognized an enemy.  He stood up to them, the Evil Empire.  Didn’t apologize.  Didn’t make nice.  He talked with them but with preconditions.  He didn’t practice Carter’s detente.  Gorbachev was a nice guy.  But the Berlin Wall still stood.  It isn’t standing any more.  Because Reagan won the Cold War.

We don’t need a man like Jimmy Carter in the face of such an implacable enemy.  We need another Ronald Reagan.  But we have Barack Obama.  Who’s a lot more Jimmy Carter than Ronald Reagan.  And we all know how well things turned out for Jimmy Carter in Iran.

As Usual, the Democrats are Trying to Deceive the Voters to Get Reelected

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 24th, 2010

Yes, I Voted for Obamacare.  But I’m Really a Reagan Democrat.

America is a center-right country.  That’s why liberals don’t run as liberals during elections.  They lie.  And deceive.  They morph into something the people actually want.  Which isn’t who they are.  They move to the center.  They sound like conservatives.  Even invoke Ronald Reagan’s name during the election.  The leftist of liberals are all Reagan Democrats at election time.  Once the polls close, though, they go right back to castigating Reagan and his policies.  And scold us that we can’t return to the failed policies of the past.

Bill Clinton ran as a New Democrat.  But once in office he governed so far to the left that he lost both houses of Congresses at the midterm elections.  Barack Obama, too.  Well, is about to.  Lose super majorities in the House and the Senate.  Why?  Because he campaigned as a centrist.  And has governed as the most liberal president to date.

Obama did not run on the platform of nationalizing our health care.  But that’s the path we’re on.   Obamacare is forcing insurance companies to raise their premiums to comply, setting the stage for further attacks against these greedy corporations.  Some are dropping children-only policies because of the mandate to insure those with preexisting conditions.  With that mandate, no parent will spend money for insurance until their child needs health care.  Obamacare is full of such legislation that has but one purpose.  To kill the private health insurance industry.  To make way for the public option.  And, eventually, nationalize health care.  But he didn’t campaign that way.  Because the voting public clearly didn’t want this.

Don’t Look at My Liberal Legislative Accomplishments.  I’m Actually Against Everything I Voted For.

You see, liberals cannot be honest during campaigns.  They can’t say that their economic policies will make the recession worse.  And prolong it.  Which they have.  They can’t say they are going to raise everyone’s taxes.  Which they will after their commission reports after the election.  They will say that there is no choice but to raise taxes on everyone to reign in the out of control deficit spending.  And they can’t say that we will lose our doctors or the health insurance we like and want to keep under Obamacare.  Which we will.  They can’t be honest about these things and still win elections.  So they lie.  And they deceive.

And now here we are.  At the midterm elections.  If you have been following the campaigns across the country, you’ve no doubt noticed something.  Or, rather, noticed something that’s not there.  That is conspicuous by its absence.   Obama and his Democrat controlled Congress passed an enormous amount of liberal legislation in not quite two years.  And nary a Democrat is running on their impressive liberal legislative accomplishments.  In fact, some are now campaigning against their own legislative record.  Why?  Because they governed against the will of their constituents.  And it’s election time.  So now it’s time, once again, to lie.  To deceive.  And they found a new game this year.  Thanks to the Tea Party.

Oh, these people hate the Tea Party.  They came up with that pejorative ‘tea bagger’ to describe these people.  They did everything they could to mock and belittle these people.  Because these people scare them.  They’re educated.  They understand the issues.  And they know who these liberals are and see through all their lies.  So what’s the logical thing for these liberals to do during this election season?  Why, support Tea Party 3rd party candidates.

Hello, I’m Devious.  Democrat Candidate for Office.  And I want to Deceive You

The Democrats are heading for a shellacking this November.  They’re desperate.  Especially poor old Harry Reid.  The consummate professional being beaten by some Tea Party hack.  Well, that’s how the Left views it.  So they’re turning up the devious this election.  The following quote comes from an article by Jim Rutenberg published 10/22/2010 at The New York Times on line (see Democrats Back Third Parties to Siphon Votes).

Democrats are working behind the scenes in a number of tight races to bolster long-shot third-party candidates who have platforms at odds with the Democratic agenda but hold the promise of siphoning Republican votes.

And, you’ve guessed it, these 3rd party candidates are balloted as ‘Tea Party’ candidates.  They’re competing against the Democrat candidate.  And the Tea Party endorsed Republican candidate.  That’s right, the actual Tea Party, the grassroots movement with that name, doesn’t endorse these ‘Tea Party’ candidates.

Democrat operatives are actually calling people, identifying themselves as registered Republicans, to promote these 3rd party candidates.  They’re trying to deceive registered Republicans into voting for the more conservative ‘Tea Party’ candidate in lieu of the ‘liberal’ Republican candidate.  If they deceive enough registered Republicans with this trick, they may just be able to Ross Perot their election (Perot was the 3rd party candidate that swept Bill Clinton into office).

Whether they do or not it sure says a lot about the Left.  They just can’t win elections honestly.

Big Government Business as Usual – Corruption and Failure

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 23rd, 2010

With Representation We Don’t Need Violent Revolution to Change Our Government

Republican congressional candidate (Dallas’ 30th Congressional District) Stephen Broden is talking crazy talk.  Which is a real shame.  Among the things he has said include this (see Republican congressional candidate says violent overthrow of government is ‘on the table’ from The Dallas Morning News by Melanie Mason):

“If the government is not producing the results or has become destructive to the ends of our liberties, we have a right to get rid of that government and to get rid of it by any means necessary,” Broden said, adding the nation was founded on a violent revolt against Britain’s King George III.

While it is true that we did use violent revolution to get rid of the government of Great Britain, that was then.  This is now.  We have something our Founding Fathers didn’t.  Representation.

If we can’t vote a government out of office, we sure don’t want to overthrow it by violent revolution.  If you think we lack unity now, just wait until you throw violence into the mix.  Think of the 4 long years of the American Civil War that killed more Americans than all other of America’s wars combined.  Think of the French Revolution and how even Robespierre, the architect of The Reign of Terror, was trundled off to the guillotine.  Think about America’s 8-year Revolutionary War in the south where it devolved into a bloody civil war between Loyalist and Patriot, neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother.  This is how violent overthrows of government go.  No, we don’t want this.  Especially when we have the right to vote.

The problem we have is an educational one.  If we understood our history, if we understood economic fundamentals, there would be no frustration and talks of violent overthrow.  There would be no need.  We would already have won at the ballot box.

Barney Frank Steals from Us in a Roundabout Way

That said, one can understand people’s frustrations.  Because some politicians are just so blatant in their corruption.  Take Barney Frank (please).  He is one of the architects of the subprime mortgage crisis, TARP, bailouts and author of new financial regulation to prevent people like him from raping and pillaging the American people again.  And he’s Wall Street’s bitch (see Barney Frank rakes in $40G from bailed out banks by Dave Wedge writing in the Boston Herald).

Frank vowed in February 2009 that he wouldn’t accept campaign donations from banks that received money under the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) or political action committees tied to such institutions.

But Frank has hauled in thousands from top execs at Bank of America, Citizens Bank, Wainwright Bank, JP Morgan Chase and other institutions that received billions in TARP money.

It was Barney Frank’s push for affordable housing and his lack of oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that gave us the subprime mortgage crisis.  But he protects Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac still.  And during the debate over the new finance regulation, he unloaded vitriol of the highest degree on Wall Street, blaming them for all our woes.  And here he is, taking money from the same people he attacked.  And bailed out.  How coincidental.  Do they come more corrupt?

The Chevy Volt is Yet Another Big Government Failure

And speaking of bailouts, how about that Government Motors?  The Obama administration attacked GM for making the wrong kind of cars.  And what were they selling?  Trucks and SUVs.  Which is what the people want.  But the Left hates trucks and SUVs so Obama took over this car company to build the ‘right’ kind of car.  And what did they come up with?  Not much (see Volt Fraud At Government Motors in an Investor’s Business Daily editorial).

It turns out that this electric car is rather silly.  You have to pay people to buy it.  It has a limited range.  And very average mileage.

The gasoline engine has been found to be more than a range-extender for the battery. Volt engineers are now admitting that when the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery pack runs down and at speeds near or above 70 mph, the Volt’s gasoline engine will directly drive the front wheels along with the electric motors. That’s not charging the battery — that’s driving the car.

So it’s not an all-electric car, but rather a pricey $41,000 hybrid that requires a taxpayer-funded $7,500 subsidy to get car shoppers to look at it. But gee, even despite the false advertising about the powertrain, isn’t a car that gets 230 miles per gallon of gas worth it?

We heard GM’s then-CEO Fritz Henderson claim the Volt would get 230 miles per gallon in city conditions. Popular Mechanics found the Volt to get about 37.5 mpg in city driving, and Motor Trend reports: “Without any plugging in, (a weeklong trip to Grandma’s house) should return fuel economy in the high 30s to low 40s.”

Again, further reason for all that frustration over government.  Henderson was the government’s man after Obama forced out Rick Wagoner.  And, surprise surprise, he lied.  Big Government poured millions of our tax dollars into this electric lemon.  But why?  We could have bought the same thing from Toyota for a heck of a lot less.

Politics – The Art of Corruption

The moral of this lesson?  The only thing government is really good at is corruption.  And to be honest, we really don’t need any more of that.  So let’s just vote this election season.  And have a peaceful change of power.  The American way.

If John Adams could peacefully hand over power to Thomas Jefferson, the people in Dallas’ 30th Congressional District have little to worry about Stephen Broden.  Let’s not forget that there were those on the Left who said George W. Bush would legalize rape and put all gay people into one state.  Well, he didn’t.  People say stupid things during the heat of an election.  We need to look past the crazy to their philosophical basis.  And whether or not we want Barney Frank to be the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee any longer.  For if there is one thing we’ve learned, you don’t want the fox guarding the hen house.  Not anymore.

We don’t need Barney Frank practicing his art anymore.  Or anyone else in Big Government.  The art of corruption had its run.  We need a new show in Washington.  Something new.  Something different.  Here’s a thought.  How about something honest?

Public Sector Pay and Benefits are Bankrupting France and New Jersey

Posted by PITHOCRATES - October 22nd, 2010

Soon, in France, You’ll be Able to Retire Before You Start Working – If the Protestors Get Their Way

Je suis français.  I am French.  And being French, it is my birthright to get lots of free stuff.  Or so says Gilly, a cemetery union representative in Marseille.  The following quotes come from AP’s French strike to save ‘birthright’ of privileges posted 10/20/2010 on Google News.

For Gilly and many other Frenchmen and women, social benefits such as long vacations, state-subsidized health care and early retirement are more than just luxuries: They’re seen as a birthright — an essential part of the identity of today’s France.

I remember reading about the French Paradox.  While Americans were suffering epidemics of heart disease, the French were living to ripe old ages.  Free from heart disease.  The paradox?  The French diet.  Heavy creams.  Cheese.  Wine.  Sure, the Americans eat a lot of crap.  But how can the French have such a high cholesterol diet and not suffer heart disease like the Americans?  Perhaps this can explain it:

“We want to stop working at 60 because it’s something our parents, our grandparents and even our great-grandparents fought for,” says Gilly, 50, a union representative at Saint-Pierre Cemetery, the largest in this bustling Mediterranean port city.

Retire at 60?  Work for half of your life (or less) and enjoy a generous retirement.  No wonder they’re living so long.  No stress.  Cradle to grave welfare.  An early retirement.  Gosh, that sounds good.  Almost too good to be true.  Once upon a time, in feudal France, you worked from childhood until you died.  Things have definitely got better.  Just how long has it been this good?  According to Gilly, it goes back generations.  All the way to his great-grandparents.  But has it?

It was in 1982, under Socialist President Francois Mitterrand, that the minimum age to stop working was lowered from 65 to 60. The measure, emblematic of the 14-year Mitterrand presidency, was adopted by a special ordinance that bypassed parliament.

And now the government wants to raise the retirement age to 62.  You can understand Gilly’s consternation.  If you do the math, the average lifespan per generation must be somewhere around 10 years.  So one can understand how the 50 year old Gilly is anxious to retire at age 60 instead of at age 62.  Because people in his family rarely live beyond 10 years of age.  Unless Gilly is exaggerating for effect.  Or lying.  Because the French were retiring at age 65 until Mitterrand changed that in 1982.

Tax the Rich, Middle Class and Anyone Else Who Isn’t in the Public Sector

This is all well and good as long as someone else is paying the bill.  And this is something that the people in the social democracies don’t understand.  There is a limit to the treasury’s generosity.  For the public treasury to pay these very generous benefits, there has to be money in the treasury.  And states fill their treasury, basically, in one of three ways: taxing, borrowing and printing money.

If they tax too much, people will have less disposable income.  They will buy less.  Private business will see a loss in sales revenue.  At the same time, they will have to pay more in taxes.  They may lay off employees to adjust to the reduced demand and higher tax burden.  The economy will slow into a recession.

If they borrow too much money, interest rates will rise.  This will increase the interest people pay on their credit cards.  They will buy less.  Private businesses will see a loss in sales revenue while their costs go up (because of the higher interest rates).  They may lay off employees to adjust to the reduced demand and higher costs.  The economy will slow into a recession.

If they print too much money, they may ignite inflation.  Inflation raises prices.  People buy less because of high prices.  Private businesses will see their costs go up with these higher prices.  They may lay off employees to adjust to the reduced demand and higher costs.  The economy will slow into a recession.

To summarize, excessive government spending leads to recession.  Which results in fewer jobs in the private sector.  This is a big problem for those public sector jobs.  Because it’s the taxes from those private sector jobs that pay for those public sector jobs.  In other words, the more the public sector demands, the more they kill the private sector, the golden goose providing that rich public sector pay and those glorious public sector benefits.

The Sans-Culottes are Very Much Avec-Culottes These Days – But They Still Revolt

I’m sure the French understand this.  I mean, how bad is it really getting over there?  Well, see Clashes, protests in French tensions over pensions by AP’s Angela Charlton on www. apnews.myway.com.  She begins with:

PARIS (AP) – Protesters blockaded Marseille’s airport, Lady Gaga canceled concerts in Paris and rioting youths attacked police in Lyon on Thursday ahead of a tense Senate vote on raising the retirement age.

A quarter of the nation’s gas stations were out of fuel despite President Nicolas Sarkozy’s orders to force open depots barricaded by striking workers.

Gasoline shortages and violence on the margins of student protests have heightened the standoff between the government and labor unions who see retirement at 60 as a hard-earned right.

New violence broke out in Lyon, as police chased rampaging youths who overturned a car and hurled bottles. Riot officers tried to subdue the violence with tear gas. A gendarme helicopter circled overhead.

Wow.  If it wasn’t for the Lady Gaga and the airport and the gas stations and the police helicopter, you’d think the sans-culottes were making another revolution.  It brings to mind the classic lyrics of Adam and the Ants’ classic Ant Rap (my sister was a BIG fan):

Liberté, égalité, au jourd’hui c’est tres tres tres

Voici l’opportunite nous incroyables!

But this ain’t the 18th century.  And famine isn’t a way of life for the masses.  No.  In fact, life is pretty darn good.  No 18th century peasant lived as grand.  In fact, the life they’re protesting about today was closer to the French nobility than it was to the Third Estate in 1789.  These aren’t food riots.  This generation just doesn’t want to work another 2 years before retirement.

It would appear that these protestors don’t understand the intricacies of a market economy.  Perhaps they have lived too long in a quasi-socialist state.  Been brainwashed by their unions.  Or maybe they just don’t care.  As long as they get their benefits now they don’t care how they impoverish future generations.  It’s a pity.  How a minority of the French people can destroy a great nation.

Good Work if You Can Get it – and You Can Get it if You Belong to a Public Sector Union

One wonders how people can resort to violence.  Of course, when you consider how much better the public sector lives than the private sector, you wonder how this hasn’t exploded earlier.  Let’s go across the pond.  To New Jersey.  But first, if you work in the private sector, pause for a moment and think about your pay and benefits.  How hard you work and how little time you get off.  Feel overworked and underpaid?  If you worked a 60-hour week or two, you probably do.  Now, think about the last time some public sector union went on strike.  When they asked you to feel their pain.  To support their cause.  Okay, now read this excerpt from a My FOX New York article by Luke Funk (see Audit: NJ Turnpike Wasted Millions On Perks on www.myfoxny.com):

MYFOXNY.COM – Auditors say the New Jersey Turnpike Authority wasted $43 million on unneeded perks and bonuses.  In one case, an employee with a base salary of $73,469 earned $321,985 when all payouts and bonuses were included.

How does that make you feel?  Think about this the next time you get change from the person sitting in a New Jersey toll booth.  Think about your skill level and your pay.  Then think about the toll booth occupant’s skill level and pay.  Now switch places and imagine someone wanting to cut your pay and benefits.  I mean, if someone was trying to cut your pay by, say, $300,000 because the state is on the brink of bankruptcy, what would you do?  Start looking in the want ads for another unskilled job that pays 3-5 times of a skilled job in the private sector?  Or are you going to do what the French are doing?

Is it any wonder Europe is burning?  First Greece.  Now France.  You get pay and benefits like this and you live like royalty.  And one thing about royalty.  They don’t abdicate without a fight.
